New to Wiki and help with bio[edit]

Hi! I have read that I'm not allowed to post my own bio. A lot of my colleagues have bios and I'm lost in how they got a listing and me, whom justifiably, may be just as interesting.  :) I have started to write anyway, to show you my dedication (and show verifiability) to learn how to edit and was wondering if may offer up any way to get myself presented on the wikipedia?

@TifanieJ: Actually, you can write your own bio. It does, however, almost always results in policy violations surrounding neutrality, so it's still a bad idea.
The existence of certain articles doesn't justify the existence of other articles. You'll have to realize there are a few million articles, versus a few thousand editors, so there are articles that should exist, but don't, and articles that shouldn't exist, but do. How interesting of a person you are doesn't justify having an article about you, either. For example, I'm an interesting person who will never qualify for a Wikipedia article.
You could write it yourself at articles for creation, so long as you make a draft. This link concisely shows you the ideal of what you should aim for, in terms of sourcing and notability. However, I think if you really do qualify for an article, someone will write about you eventually, completely and totally unprompted. I dream of horses (T) @ 02:22, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Would you take another look at this, please? I think you'll see that it is plainly notable. All the best, -- Ssilvers (talk) 19:36, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Ssilvers: Well, there's a discussion going on about whether or not it should be deleted. There will be multiple people looking at the article. --I dream of horses (T) @ 22:53, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion - Jordan Devlin[edit]

Hello friend,

As you dream of horses, I dream of using my creative ability, to insight positive change in this troublesome world we are all a part of.

Since you seem deem my last 5 years of creative endeavours inadequate for a website page on a public forum, ran, by the public, for the public, all I can do is ask nicely, that you reconsider this deletion.

I have had 1 publication in a printed book distributed internationally and 2 exhibitions, as well as 5 years of online contribution to one of the internets most popular websites (tumblr), clocking over 1,000,000 views on my photos.

If you could please advise me, what I must do next, in my career as an artist, in order to be published on this beautiful platform, so that i can continue to rally for peace and love through the sharing of creativity, as opposed to oppressing artists for not being "notable" enough, i would truly appreciate it.

Best regards, The soon to be notable enough for a wikipedia page, Jordan Devlin — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jordvnd (talkcontribs) 04:45, 2 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, User:I dream of horses! You might not know my by this IP address, but you helped me few times in teahouse discussions. Due to some reasons, I no longer use my account on Wikipedia, still I edit it. This IP (14.139.242.195) is shared between 1500 students of NIIT University, and thus, some of the edits are vandalism. Your caution was the result of the same. I am sorry for this vandalism. WP was again vandalised two days ago. Since I left Wikipedia, I am busy on other sister project, (Use my IP, since I requested a block) and thus I don't see the contributions by this account. Delete, a handful of minor roles, but doesn't come close to WP:NACTOR in my view. I'm sympathetic to the argument that it's usually harder to find written information on Indian topics than Western ones, but when it's a BLP we're talking about, caution is called for. Subject must have played minor and supporting roles in various films and TV shows, but fails WP:NACTOR and WP:GNG. Mentioned only in passing in cited media articles (which themselves are mostly second-tier sources), and I couldn't locate anything more comprehensive.David 16:44, 7 September 2015 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by ManishSrivastava1 (talkcontribs)

Polish złoty[edit]

Thanks for trying to fix my edit to List of circulating currencies § List of circulating currencies by state or territory. Unfortunately, your fix wasn't fully right. I had left that line of the table as

| {{Sort|Zloty, Polish|[[Polish złotyIzł

where at least part of the problem, the capital I, is obvious in serif type (I was working via my smartphone, which displays in sans-serif).

Unfortunately, your edit involved a mistaken assumption. "Polish złoty" has to be a wikilink, as comparison with almost any of the other rows of the table would show; that is the last parameter in the template call, so it should be followed by a pair of closing curly braces }}; and the capital I should be a pipe | on a new line:

| {{Sort|Zloty, Polish|[[Polish złoty]]}}
| zł

Your edit left that part of the table looking like this:

State or territory[2] Currency[2][3] Symbol[4] ISO code[3] Fractional unit Number to basic
Philippines Philippine peso PHP Centavo 100
[...]
Poland Polish złotyIzł PLN Grosz 100
 Portugal Euro EUR Cent 100

The currency name "Polish złoty" was not linked; and since the table row had one cell too few — the symbol "zł" was attached to the Currency row instead of having a row of its own — all the following cells on the row were shifted one column to the left. I've fixed it now.

I try to preview every edit I make before saving it, and that's what I recommend to other editors.

Erroneous Orphan Tag[edit]

Hi i think you left an erroneous orphan tag on Dialogues: Rousseau, Judge of Jean-Jacques. Links to this WP page can be found in the pages of Reveries of a Solitary Walker and also Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Soham321 (talk) 12:46, 7 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Soham321: I define an orphaned article as an article that has two or less links to it; a low-linked article has 3-5 links. --I dream of horses (T) @ 02:36, 8 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
There are three links now to the article. Also, please note that the orphan tag contains the words "This article is an orphan, as no other articles link to it". (talk) 02:40, 8 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Soham321: Yes, I am aware of the wording on the tag, and I find it unfortunate, as it puts the article in a hidden, maintenance category, possibly attracting people that can de-orphan the article.
You can either put |few=September 2015 to put the article in a hidden, "low-linked" maintenance category (I'd recommend that), or just remove it. I dream of horses (T) @ 02:45, 8 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Edits Removed - Clarification Needed[edit]

Hi, thanks for offering to help me. Recently, a new section I added to the article "Just A Friend" was removed. I've read the rule under which it was removed and don't understand how it applies to my section. It seems to me my section is similar to what is featured on many comparable articles. Could you please provide some clarification?Technology11 (talk) 16:11, 7 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Technology11: Unfortunately, other articles can fall through the cracks at times, since there's millions of articles, and, at most, a few thousand volunteer editors. "In popular culture" sections are discouraged by some editors, since they sometimes include overly detailed information that only a few people are interested in.
Binksternet is the one who reverted your edit; maybe they can clarify further. --I dream of horses (T) @ 02:42, 8 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Here's my removal, which cited the guideline WP:SONGCOVER. SONGCOVER represents a consensus of editors interested in music articles. It's not hard policy, but a settled consensus has a lot of carrying power in Wikipedia.
SONGCOVER sets a very high bar of inclusion for cover versions. Most TV and film performances are not important enough to be mentioned. Technology11 is correct in observing that many of our song articles don't appear to follow this guideline, that they have plenty of song covers taken from film and TV, taken from live concerts and such. That is because Wikipedia can be edited by anyone, regardless of whether they are aware of previous discussions about certain issues. There are lots of people who don't know, and also quite a few people who know but just don't care about the SONGCOVER guideline. So the question is: do we abandon all attempts to limit the kinds of song covers that are listed at song articles? Or do we try and maintain the previously agreed-upon consensus which sets a high bar? I hold that we must keep trying to implement SONGCOVER despite the Sisyphean task that it is. Binksternet (talk) 03:24, 8 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Technology11: And here is Binksternets' response ^. I dream of horses (T) @ 03:31, 8 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Birksinternet:Thanks for the reply. I disagree with your view, in that my content was not a list of cover versions. If it was a list of cover versions, I would agree, but it's an "in popular culture" section and it wasn't overly detailed information. Is there any further review that can be done of this issue?Technology11 (talk) 03:39, 10 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Well, Technology11, it's the same thing. You added Cheech Marin singing the song, Chris Rock and Kerry Washington singing the song, and a trivial mention of the song by rapper Akinyele. I removed the trivial mention because it was not important to the topic. I removed the other people singing the song per WP:SONGCOVER, because those were cover versions which were not shown to be important to the topic. @DukeBuckingham: So, you have the copyright. Proposed deletion of List of detainees at the Kamunting Detention Centre[edit]

The article List of detainees at the Kamunting Detention Centre has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

I believe it's best to delete this article per WP:CRIME.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. I dream of horses If you reply here, please ping me by adding {{Ping|I dream of horses}} to your message. (talk to me) (contributions) @ 10:15, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You've contacted the wrong person. Look at the article history and look at Talk:Internal Security Act (Malaysia). I removed the list from the article and placed in in a subpage of the article talkpage. It was recently moved to mainspace by User:Alexander Iskandar. I suggest you contact Alexander Iskandar to find out why they moved the list into mainspace, and if they don't have an adequate explanation, the move should be undone. Jimmy Mizen page[edit]

Hi I Dream of Horses,

I recently edited the Jimmy Mizen page, as the information under The Jimmy Mizen Foundation is incorrect. It is no longer called The Jimmy Mizen Foundation, it is now known as For Jimmy. It is also a charity that carries out charitable work across south east London and the UK, and is not simply the owner of three cafes. The information as it stands is misleading and doesn't outline what the charity is. You can visit www.forjimmy.org for more information, perhaps you can use this to correct that section of the page.

Thank you, Connor

Too bleedin' complicated[edit]

I have submitted an article on a major German artist that was not represented at all in English Wikipedia. I have a strong research background, and am an experienced writer. Until I tried Wikipedia, I also thought I was a pretty average user of online tools. My experience with Wikipedia has however been the most outrageously complicated platform I have ever experienced. Empowerment edits undone[edit]

Hi,

I just spent quite some time responding to the criticisms listed on the top of ths page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empowerment#Female_empowerment

Dear I dream of horses,

Thanks for reviewing and editing my article about Tokyo West International School. I would be glad if you could have a look one more time at the article, as I categorized it in the most appropriated ones. I also link it with other articles like international schools in Japan or Tokyo.

Regarding the sources, I don't really know what should I add in my article as it's about a school, so I'm not quoting anybody. Could you please give me some example of sources I could put in regarding a school ?

Waiting for your answer, best regards.

North American Single-Footing Horse[edit]

I categorized the NASFH article as horse breed. What does linkrot mean, exactly? It's extremely hard to find links for these weird breeds, but the article was redlinked as a 'To-Do' on WP:EQUINE, so I guess it was wanted by somebody at least. I tried to find the most reliable links, from what was available on Google. I also linked it from List of horse breeds. White Arabian mare (Neigh) 21:28, 18 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@White Arabian mare: (edit conflict) It means that if the links within the references change, or if the websites cease to exist, there'd be no way for anyone to look up the information that you're citing. That's all, so don't worry. I think the article should exist, too.

Due to hacking issues, slow internet and other problems, my only web access is off a smartphone right now. For the record, I'll tell you how I write articles and sections; I do a Google search on the topic and find the best-looking sources (not selling stuff, promoting opinions instead of facts, or incomprehensible) and take notes of the vital facts and the URLs of the websites they came from. I then return to Wiki and write. White Arabian mare (Neigh) 19:25, 19 September 2015 (UTC)White Arabian mare[reply]

Ted Moore and Sandro Botticelli[edit]

Hi, there.

I was editing Ted Moore's biography, adding to his birthplace of South Africa.

When I added to it, the page told me that the place where Moore was born (Western Cape) didn't exist on Wikipedia.

How do you create a page on Wikipedia?

Also, I found out that Sandro Botticelli's birthday was March 1st (source being NNDB), but whenever I go to put in the information, it always gets edited out.

How come it gets deleted?

If you still think the article should be deleted, please don't add the {{prod}} template back to the article. Instead, feel free to list it at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. Thanks! --Samuel J. Hello?[edit]

Hello, My colleagues and I are trying to update our page please leave us to edit in peace, we are aware of the terms as we are making edits by the terms and using the Wikimedia guide. Have nice day. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.76.148.38 (talk) 4:47, September 20, 2015

Actually, you aren't complying with the terms of use set forth by the company that owns Wikipedia, the Wikimedia Foundation. Since you all work for the company you're writing about, you need to all declare who you are working for, as requested by HaeB. This would be made easier if everyone made an account.
Also, there are issues surrounding the fact that at least some of you aren't complying with our local neutral point of view guidelines, which is an issue we've had with other people writing about who they work for. --I dream of horses (T) @ 05:02, 20 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
We have complied with neutral point of view guidelines, and annotated and explained every edit we have made. We do not see any terms set forth by the Wikimedia Foundation that have been broken. We appreciate your editing!
Actually, as an experienced editor, I can say that no, you haven't complied with neutral point of view guidelines, and you have barely complied with ToU guidelines. --I dream of horses (T) @ 05:23, 20 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Saks employees or agents, 'please listen to what User:I dream of horses is telling you. Your recent edit deleting almost the entire history section is vandalism. You're violating pretty much every policy and what will likely happen next is you will be blocked by an administrator, then the whole range of IP's you are editing from will be blocked, and all your edits will be reverted. So you're wasting your time. See WP:OWN and WP:ADVERTISING. For other examples of relevant policies you're ignoring. Finally, you're also opening the door to potential bad press, since everthing you do here is publicly recorded and available, including this discussion. Do you want journalists and investors and your boss reading this? Well, they can and probably will at some point, seeing as is is the 7th most visited web site in the world..New Media Theorist (talk) 05:41, 20 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
We find this hard to believe since you have not provided us with any unbiased content, while we have also gone out our way to make sure we are not. We are experienced editors as well, we just don't have Wikipedia accounts. More power to you.

Pinging New Media Theorist I find it really hard to believe that you are experienced editors. You aren't signing your "name" with four tildes, which I tell you to do not once, but twice how to do when you leave me a message. If you can't read what's underneath the big, red letters at the top of the screen, or the big, tan box at the top of this page, then you probably haven't read any of our policies, either. One of you didn't even know how to leave me a message--I had to copy and paste from your edit summary. I dream of horses (T) @ 05:46, 20 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

My BA in Education disagrees you, yes I am an editor. I curate archives. Saks fan club and collection - we are not employees none of this is violating the terms, please take your scare tactics someplace else. We cannot find anything wrong or biased about our edits, and new important information has been added. We are appreciative of your help. We do not feel you have the proper knowledge or background to be even editing this page so you are actually vandalizing. We are very disappointed. We will continue stand by our edit obeying all terms and we are within our right to make our changes.
Excuse me, when I said "editor", I meant editor of Wikipedia. This is, quite literally, an editable encyclopedia. When I tell you that you are violating our terms, I know what I'm talking. When I tell you are not an experienced editor (of Wikipedia, not archives!), I actually mean it. You are behaving like a group of employees, and it makes me wonder what is your connection with the articles you are editing. I dream of horses (T) @ 08:03, 20 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Feel Free to Delete Entry[edit]

I was trying to edit the entry "R. Baxter Miller" as a public service, and I did not originate it. I probably do know more about the subject than anyone else alive. If this discussion is subject to continuance, please simply delete the entry from your domain and never allow a new one (probably libelous) ever to recur. I am perfectly happy to live with the listings in WHO'S WHO AMONG INTERNATIONAL WRITERS (1986) and WHO'S WHO IN THE WORLD (2005).

Please, no more discussion about this. I have neither the time nor patience.

R. Baxter Miller

Deleted today:

According to the University of Georgia Student Affairs, in July 2015 after directing a scandalous camp for young adolescents, when he refused to pay the salary of a 6-months-pregnant African American staff, he resigned from his position as the interim chair of the Center for Social Justice at the School of Social Work. [3]

The page, of course, is real; but the undocumented lie does not appear there. What sick person is playing this game? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rbmiller6 (talkcontribs) 21:00, 21 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Rbmiller6: Well, certainly no one would know more about whether or not you are being slandered other than you! If you feel there is a genuine concern, you can use the biographies of living people noticeboard, or email info-en-q@wikimedia.org if you need additional privacy.

Either lock or delete entry R. Baxter Miller[edit]

This new line in quotations below was added today. (I deleted it.) The web site, of course, is authentic; but no supporting narrative for the slander is there whatsoever. This is understandable since the sentence itself is a lie.

"According to the University of Georgia Student Affairs, in July 2015 after directing a scandalous camp for young adolescents, when he refused to pay the salary of a 6-months-pregnant African American staff, he resigned from his position as the interim chair of the Center for Social Justice at the School of Social Work." [3] I never resigned anything, and the Interim Directorship was a term contract. If this lie cannot be permanently corrected by 5:00 PM, Friday, September 25, 2015, then I am requesting that all entries and references to R. Baxter Miller be removed from Wikipedia indefinitely.

Thank you.

@Scottsretsam: I nominated the article for deletion because it didn't say why Covina and Mateo deserved an article. GB fan deleted it, and he or she's the person to talk to. I dream of horses (T) @ 18:11, 22 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I am a 58 yo emergency physician and I noticed the Wiki article on emergency medicine requested revision.

I did this, and I think it looks much better.

But the request for revision still appears on the article.

Can you change this? take it off?

Editing an article[edit]

I don't think an internal link to "Tell me what Rockers to Swallow" is an addition of an artist. Also, I haven't removed it repeatedly. --I dream of horses (T) @ 15:30, 23 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Both "Down Boy" and "Cheated Hearts" were performed on that DVD in 2004, two years before they were actually released as singles. Hence why I link to them. 47.18.49.5 (talk) 15:34, 23 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Adding box on the right of page[edit]

Hey! Thanks for the welcome. I'm trying to add an informative box on the right side of the One Health Institute page (to say when it was founded, name the director, etc). @Justincox22: Does it help to know that you're trying to insert an "infobox"? --I dream of horses (T) @ 22:13, 23 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, it does. I eventually looked at the source code of another page and figured that out. I created one, although I had a hard time adding "Director" to the infobox. It works when I leave it as "Founder" but if I use the word "Director" it disappears. No idea why, although it's not a huge deal --Justincox22 @ 22:16, 23 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I received your message and was hoping you could help me. I'm having a hard time understanding all of this. I've been working on getting good info out for some time on dogs, dog parks, etc. A friend told me Wikipedia is the perfect place for getting my dog body language out to more people. Giving more people education on it for their personal dogs. Am I just doing something wrong or is it because my blog is on my business site this is not an option?

Thank you for any assistance - I truly appreciate your time.

Preventing school articles from being redirected[edit]

It was a few years back when you awarded me a school barnstar (the only one I have) for writing good school articles. Only recently I have started up writing on Wikipedia and I am finding many of my articles have been redirected and subsequently several hours of work are now lost. I am trying to find a way to keep this from happening as I feel that high schools (US) deserve to have good quality written articles. In fact, numerous articles have been expanded by other Wikipedians well beyond what I expected. I have been able to rescue several redirects such that they can stand on their own. Unfortunately, a few editors have carelessly redirected articles to cities and towns instead of school districts. I hope you can help because I enjoy creating articles that I hope will grow in time. But I now have 350+ articles to corral and it can be cumbersome at times. Thanks for your consideration. Indyjrg1762 (talk) 09:02, 25 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Indyjrg1762: I'd just go ahead and talk to the people who have redirected the articles you've written. Some people simply have a more redirectionist view than others, and it might help to hear them out. --I dream of horses (T) @ 15:46, 25 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Well, writers sometimes get attached to their work, and then the tags present an emotional challenge. But I have been looking back in time through the histories and have seen what a difference the critical eye and tag make. With this article, are the refs in the intro paragraph sufficient? I think I can replace the refs which deal with the books and music albums. Thanks again,Jacqke (talk) 04:10, 29 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

poppy straw 2015 edit[edit]

Hi fred can you plese plese edit the following with respect to the following

Poppy straw (also poppy chaff or husk) is a by-product of the poppy seed harvest, used as seeds in food such as bread. To get poppy straw from opium poppy (Papaver Somniferum.L) the crop is harvested when fully mature and dry in the field, minus the ripe poppy seeds by mechanised mowing. (No Poppy Straw consists of seeds)

Opium Poppy straw can be one of several different things: What is left after the poppy seed harvest, so the dried stalks, stem and leaves of poppies grown for their seeds The dried leaves and stalk harvested after the seed pod has been used for traditional opium extraction The dried leaves, stalk and seed pod used in commercial manufacture of morphine or other poppy alkaloid derived drugs, where no extraction using traditional methods of latex extraction has been made.

Harvesting of poppy straw can be almost entirely mechanised. It is a somewhat similar process to growing wheat. The plants are allowed to mature fully, then a machine is used to harvest the entire field. The ripe poppy seeds are separated out by threshing and winnowing, and the remainder is poppy straw. Despite the definition by the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, although poppy straw should only consist of the above ground parts of the plant, the roots may be harvested as well.

The straw was originally considered an agricultural by-product of the poppy seed harvest, which was primarily grown for its edible and oil-producing seed. This changed in 1927 when János Kabay developed a chemical process to extract morphine from the capsule.[1] Poppy straw consisting mainly of the husk soon became a valuable source of morphine. Today, poppy straw is a major source of many opiates and other alkaloids. It is the source of 90% of the world supply of legal morphine (for medical and scientific use)[2] and in some countries it also is a source of illegal morphine, which could be processed into illegal heroin.[3]

The 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs defines poppy straw as "all parts (except the seeds) of the opium poppy, after mowing".[4]

Harvesting

Traditional method: fruits are scored

Traditional method of harvesting opium by hand, still in use today

Modern method; Grown for pharmaceutical companies like McFarlane Smith under licence by U.K. Government in Oxfordshire

Modern method: harvesting of poppy straw using mowing separating the poppy straw and seed

Traditional harvesting of opium poppies to produce opiates involved the labor-intensive work of making shallow cuts in the immature fruits (seed pods) so that the latex would leak out and dry, then returning the following day to scrape off the dry latex, known as raw opium.

Harvesting of poppy straw is an alternative, largely mechanized method. The plants are allowed to mature fully, then a machine is used to harvest the entire field. The ripe poppy seeds are separated out by threshing and winnowing, and the remainder is poppy straw. Poppy straw usually consists of only the above ground parts of the plant, but the roots may be harvested as well.

Decorative Dried Flower producer/growers and wholesalers ( such as UK FLOWER POWER) based in Europe, hand pick the decorative mature seeded pods/heads with or without the stalks for use as floral decorations for visual gratification in arrangements, these are mechanically dried at high temperatures in large kilns to render insects dead and the seeds unviable so that the harvest consists almost entirely of the dried flowered seeded pods/heads ( for ease of transport, artificial stems are added afterwards for e.g. bird seed wreath making, floral arrangements and wedding boutonnières or arts/craft projects ).This can not be considered as Poppy straw since this is defined as the following: What is left after the poppy seed harvest, so the dried stalks, stem and leaves of poppies grown for their seeds The dried leaves and stalk harvested after the seed pod has been used for traditional opium extraction The dried leaves, stalk and seed pod used in commercial manufacture of morphine or other poppy alkaloid derived drugs, where no extraction using traditional methods of latex extraction has been made.

this is then processed in a manner similar to opium to extract opiates and other alkaloids (see Morphine).

Avoiding the labor-intensive harvesting of opium by hand was the topic of research for almost 100 years.[5] This research was of notable interest in those countries where opium poppy was an important oilseed crop but due to high labor costs the harvesting of opium was not economic. What was needed was a process that enabled commercial extraction of opiates from opium poppies directly rather than from (comparatively pure) opium.

By the 1940s, commercial production of morphine from poppy straw had spread from Hungary to Poland and finally most countries where poppies are grown on a large scale primarily for their seeds. By 1950, about 10% of the poppy seed harvest of those countries was also yielding morphine. Based on average yields and the reported production of poppy seed in 9 European countries, the potential production of morphine from those crops was estimated to be 148,800 kilograms (328,000 lb). However, in 1950 the actual production of morphine from poppy straw was reported to be 11,663 kilograms (25,713 lb).[6]

As of 1950, the average annual yield per hectare was estimated to be 675 kilograms (1,488 lb) poppy seed and 450 kilograms (990 lb) poppy straw (dry capsule chaff), which in turn was estimated to yield about 1.5 kilograms (3.3 lb) of morphine (in good years).[6]

Processing

The first commercial process by which opiates are extracted from poppy straw was invented in Hungary by János Kabay.[5][7] This process, known as the "poppy straw method",[8] remains in use today. Kabay applied his new process initially to fields of opium poppies between the stages of flowering and maturity, while the fruits were green. This had several disadvantages: the immature poppy seeds could not be winnowed, so not only was the seed crop lost but their poppyseed oil interfered with the process; the abundant chlorophyll in the green plants also interfered; and an entire year's crop had to be processed in two months, as it reached the fruit stage. Kabay soon found that the process could be applied to poppy straw residue from the poppy seed harvest, and thereby eliminate all these disadvantages.

Poppy straw is first pulverized, then washed as many as six to ten or more times in water and/or various acids and other chemicals, to produce poppy straw concentrate (PSC, also known as concentrate of poppy straw, CPS). Dried, the concentrate is a beige to brown powder. It contains salts of various alkaloids, and can range from nine to 30 times the morphine concentration of poppy straw. Opium concentrates using solvents other than acidifed or plain water are often but not necessarily called PSC.[9]

Poppies of the Norman and Przemko strains contain much higher amounts of thebaine and oripavine and have morphine concentrations down to under 1 per cent. versus up to 26 per cent in high-morphine strains.[citation needed] At least one manufacturer, Tasmanian Alkaloids, produces both high-morphine and high-thebaine/oripavine types of poppy straw concentrate; the latter is used by pharmaceutical manufacturers to make semi-synthetic and synthetic opioids such as oxycodone, etorphine, butorphanol and a number of others.

PSC is an alternative to bricks of opium, as an alkaloid source in most but not all of the production methods to isolate natural alkaloids from the opium poppy. A notable exception is thebaine, which is present in far larger fractions in opium than in poppy straw.[citation needed] Morphine, being a large fraction of the alkaloids found in mature poppy capsules, is produced commercially from either opium or concentrated poppy straw.[10] To extract morphine, PSC is dissolved in water and treated with other chemicals to obtain the next intermediate, calcium morphenate or less frequently sodium morphenate, which is then further treated to purify the drug and convert it to the desired morphine salt or base. Processes for extracting other alkaloids, such as codeine and noscapine, use other chemicals and/or optimal solution pH.

Poppy straw crops

Annual world production of opium and poppy straw, both legal and illegal, is tabulated by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, and reported in its annual World Drug Report. The quantity of poppy straw produced is typically given as "opium equivalents". The 2002 World Drug Report estimate of the total world opium production, including opium equivalents of poppy straw, was 42,600 metric tons (41,900 long tons) in 1906/07 and 12,600 metric tons (12,400 long tons) in 2007. The 2007 production consisted of 8,870 metric tons (8,730 long tons) of illegal opium, 3,420 metric tons (3,370 long tons) of opium equivalent from legal poppy straw, and 300 metric tons (300 long tons) of legal opium.[2] Thus, over 90% of the world production of legal opiates, including medical morphine, now is produced from poppy straw.

With the establishment of poppy straw as the source of the majority of natural morphine and other opiates, much of the world production of opium is destined for illicit uses. In 1981 dried capsules were found being sold for decoration in Sweden, that had been lanced 2 to 5 times with a tool having 3 to 4 blades and the opium scraped off. The morphine content of these capsules was 0.15 - 0.34%, comparable to domestic Swedish capsules not lanced. In India, poppy straw from lanced capsules had a morphine content of at least 0.2%. These levels of morphine obtained from "exhausted" plants suggests that for producers of licit opium, poppy straw may be a profitable second crop.[4]

As of 2005, India was the only country producing licit opium (opium gum) for both domestic use and export. Licit opium was produced also in Democratic People's Republic of Korea for domestic use, and Japan for maintenance of the pertinent technology (small quantities). Opium poppies were grown principally for extraction of alkaloids (from poppy straw) in 9 other countries: Australia, China, France, Hungary, Slovakia, Spain, the Republic of Macedonia, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. China ceased producing licit opium after 2001[citation needed]. Opium poppies grown principally for the seed crop, with licit poppy straw as a by-product, were produced in Czech Republic, and Serbia and Montenegro. Another 6 countries cultivated opium poppies solely for the poppy seed or horticultural purposes, without extraction of alkaloids from poppy straw: Austria, Estonia, Germany, Netherlands, Poland, and Ukraine.[11] Illicit production of Polish heroin and other products derived from poppy straw is an ongoing problem in Poland.[3]

The production of licit opium in India was in accord with terms of the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs. After the opium was harvested, the plants were allowed to mature and harvested for poppy seeds. The sale of poppy seeds delivered a significant proportion of the income from the licit opium crop. Unknown fractions of both the opium harvest and poppy straw residue of the poppy seed harvest were diverted to illicit uses.[11]

The production of illegal opium from poppy straw is limited. It is reported primarily in clandestine laboratories in Moldova, the Russian Federation, and Ukraine, using domestic poppy straw.[3]

Derived products

A common method of producing laudanum involves dissolving the PSC or latex-derived opium in alcohol and either being allowed to sit for up to a week and periodically agitated, using fresh alcohol to do multiple washes, or refluxing. The original patents for laudanum in various countries refer to soaking poppy straw in varying levels of pulverisation in plain water for a week then evaporating the water to obtain the gummy or powdery brown concentrate.

Recreational use

Poppy tea and its variants can be said to be an incomplete and/or relatively crude form of PSC aqueous solution.

Home-made poppy straw extracts including Kompot are widely used among IV drug users in eastern Europe, including Ukraine[12][13] and Poland.[14] RajanMarwaha (talk) 20:38, 30 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
