Help developing an article![edit]

I am employed by IWG plc, and I have been working since the beginning of October 2019 to improve a draft of the IWG plc article for accuracy and completeness.

In response to feedback from Wikipedia editors on Talk:IWG, I corrected inaccuracies and, with the help of editors, removed all promotional language. However, as a paid editor, it is not my place to add more information to the article about IWG and its companies, as it could naturally be perceived as "marketing."

This is why I am seeking help from the community. I would like to flag that the IWG plc article is incomplete and lacking a lot of information about the company's 30-year presence in 120 countries. Moreover, it has a low quality grade (C-Class) and has not as yet received a rating on the project's importance scale.

It would be great to have the support of some committed researchers as part of the Wikipedia community to see if we can make the page more complete.

Thanks for reading this far! --KatherineBusby2019 (talk) KatherineBusby2019 (talk) 14:45, 29 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

KatherineBusby2019, I certainly appreciate your enthusiasm and sense of ethics. I think the thing to do is to add the information, with reliable sourcing and an edit request template, to Talk:IWG, and see if someone will add the information for you. Worst case scenario, you will be told "No", hopefully with a reason.  I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 17:02, 29 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I dream of horses Hi, thanks for replying. I have definitely done this, and the answer was 90% no with only some small incorporations. Do you have any advice on how to engage the community to contribute to the article? --KatherineBusby2019 (talk) 11:23, 30 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
KatherineBusby2019, if the consensus is that a piece information shouldn't be incorporated (seems to be the case here, looking more closely), then yeah, it's probably not going to get added without either getting substantially changed or outright removed. The RfC could, in theory, change the consensus; in practice, it may not, as RfCs aren't typically used for the benefit of paid editors.
I realize that this is your job. I'm quite sympathetic to the potential bind you're in. Don't get me wrong. But I'm not sure you'll quite get what you'll want here.  I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 04:12, 31 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I dream of horsesI really appreciate your honesty! In my place, what action would you take? --KatherineBusby2019 (talk) 14:34, 31 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

KatherineBusby2019, I'm not entirely sure. I'm sure how you go from here would depend on the culture of where you work.

I've had a previous paid editor tell me they were having a meeting to explain the policies of Wikipedia to their workplace after I had to revert a few of their edits. So, that's an option for a few people.  I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 02:11, 1 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Review newsletter November 2019[edit]

Hello I dream of horses/2019,

This newsletter comes a little earlier than usual because the backlog is rising again and the holidays are coming very soon.

Getting the queue to 0

There are now 817 holders of the New Page Reviewer flag! Most of you requested the user right to be able to do something about the huge backlog but it's still roughly less than 10% doing 90% of the work. Now it's time for action.
Exactly one year ago there were 'only' 3,650 unreviewed articles, now we will soon be approaching 7,000 despite the growing number of requests for the NPR user right. If each reviewer soon does only 2 reviews a day over five days, the backlog will be down to zero and the daily input can then be processed by every reviewer doing only 1 review every 2 days - that's only a few minutes work on the bus on the way to the office or to class! Let's get this over and done with in time to relax for the holidays.
Want to join? Consider adding the NPP Pledge userbox.
Our next newsletter will announce the winners of some really cool awards.

Coordinator

Admin Barkeep49 has been officially invested as NPP/NPR coordinator by a unanimous consensus of the community. This is a complex role and he will need all the help he can get from other experienced reviewers.

This month's refresher course

Paid editing is still causing headaches for even our most experienced reviewers: This official Wikipedia article will be an eye-opener to anyone who joined Wikipedia or obtained the NPR right since 2015. See The Hallmarks to know exactly what to look for and take time to examine all the sources.

Tools
  • It is now possible to select new pages by date range. This was requested by reviewers who want to patrol from the middle of the list.
  • It is now also possible for accredited reviewers to put any article back into the New Pages Feed for re-review. The link is under 'Tools' in the side bar.
Reviewer Feedback

Would you like feedback on your reviews? Are you an experienced reviewer who can give feedback to other reviewers? If so there are two new feedback pilot programs. New Reviewer mentorship will match newer reviewers with an experienced reviewer with a new reviewer. The other program will be an occasional peer review cohort for moderate or experienced reviewers to give feedback to each other. The first cohort will launch November 13.

Second set of eyes
  • Not only are New Page Reviewers the guardians of quality of new articles, they are also in a position to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged for deletion and maintenance and that new authors are not being bitten. This is an important feature of your work, especially while some routine tagging for deletion can still be carried out by non NPR holders and inexperienced users. Read about it at the Monitoring the system section in the tutorial. If you come across such editors doing good work, don't hesitate to encourage them to apply for NPR.
  • Do be sure to have our talk page on your watchlist. There are often items that require reviewers' special attention, such as to watch out for pages by known socks or disruptive editors, technical issues and new developments, and of course to provide advice for other reviewers.
Arbitration Committee

The annual ArbCom election will be coming up soon. All eligible users will be invited to vote. While not directly concerned with NPR, Arbcom cases often lead back to notability and deletion issues and/or actions by holders of advanced user rights.

Community Wish list

There is to be no wish list for WMF encyclopedias this year. We thank Community Tech for their hard work addressing our long list of requirements which somewhat overwhelmed them last year, and we look forward to a successful completion.

A message from Muffin of the English[edit]

Thanks for the barnstar! I was wondering if you could help get archiving sorted out on my talk page, as I noticed that your archival system appears to be function properly. Muffin of the English (talk) 03:35, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Muffin of the English, has previous attempts failed? If so, how?  I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 04:11, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes they have failed, the issue is I don't know the reason behind them failing. The archival box appears but none of the conversations archive even if they are older than 1 month old. Muffin of the English (talk) 14:14, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I dream of horses I am new to edits on Wikipedia, I apologize in advance for any errors... I just rec'd your note. "Skerv" is the band that opened up the Main Stage at Music Midtown on Sunday 2003... I don't understand why it was edited/removed. Can you assist? Skervdammit (talk) 20:48, 8 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Skervdammit, now that I realize you were acting in good faith, I've restored your edits. Apologies that your first days on Wikipedia seem to be difficult. Someone else might decided to restore my revert, but if that happens, that's between you and them.
Not everyone realizes that you can remove the sort of user warning I've added to your talk page, but you can.  I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 04:19, 9 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have a problem with huggle where it no longer updates the queue even when it is on it's empty, and you need to re start huggle everytime? Thegooduser Life Begins With a Smile :) 🍁 03:10, 29 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thegooduser, no, I don't. That sounds like something to be reported to phabricator if you can't troubleshoot it.  I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 03:10, 29 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
ah. okay. and how does the wikipedia library work? Thegooduser Life Begins With a Smile :) 🍁 03:11, 29 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thegooduser, being a non-content editor, and therefore not having need of the Wikipedia Library, I have little knowledge of the Wikipedia Library. However, it seems that academic journals will give a certain number of subscriptions to established editors who can prove a need for them to edit Wikipedia. I'd ask any further questions at the Wikipedia Library.  I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 03:15, 29 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
How can I get a background on my talk page like meaghan has? Thegooduser Life Begins With a Smile :) 🍁 03:18, 29 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thegooduser, copy and paste, and adjust the links to your own userspace.  I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 03:20, 29 November 2019 (UTC) (fixed template at 03:20, 29 November 2019 (UTC))[reply]

A message from Kirkleyditch[edit]

Thank you for messaging me about my article Stewart Vaughan.

I was prompted to write this article because on 9 February 2017 LouisAlain created an English Wikipedia page for the 700 seat Parisian theatre the Théâtre de la Michodière, drawn from the French wikipedia page. Indeed, I contributed by correcting some mistranslations.

The fact that authors such as Ray Cooney, who are now little played in the West End still have an important role in the Parisian "West End" is little known in England. Stewart Vaughan has contributed to their Parisian success by adapting many of these plays. This, too, is little known in England, hence the lack of English reference material.

I will try and find some.

I also propose to add to the plays the names of the stars who played the main roles. These include actresses such as Delphine Depardieu, who has an English wikipedia page, whose only references are imbd.com pages. Will this help ?

I have found it very frustrating since July 2019, when I was asked to add more references, which I did, to have had no one to talk to, so your contacting me is a real help.

I actually took an online course to learn how to create wikipedia pages, and took pleasure in it. But this incident has seriously discouraged me. Also, in the past, when an appeal was made for funds, I contributed. But in September of this year when jimmy@wikipedia sent me a message saying I had won two medals and would I contribute again, I didn't respond. You can imagine why.

If you search "Stewart Vaughan" in English wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?sort=relevance&search=%22Stewart+Vaughan%22&title=Special%3ASearch&profile=advanced&fulltext=1&advancedSearch-current=%7B%7D&ns0=1 5 of the 9 references refer to the Stewart Vaughan I have written about.

Given the number of references I have provided, many of which are visual, and therefore the fact that they are in French is of less importance, I do not understand why I am being so badly treated.

But please will you ensure that the speedy deletion doesn't suddenly take place. I will not be defeated.

Kirkleyditch (talk) 12:23, 29 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Kirkleyditch, I'm sure SportingFlyer, who actually reviewed your draft and rejected it, can answer some of your questions. However, technically speaking, it's okay to use non-English sources.  I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 02:37, 30 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Kirkleyditch, I'm sorry you've had such a difficult experience with draftspace. As I dream of horses noted, I declined your most recent draft not because it didn't have enough sources, but because in my opinion, the sources did not properly contribute to Mr. Vaughn's notability. This means if the draft were accepted to the main encyclopedia, it would have had a very good chance of being very quickly deleted. The sources in the article currently verify Mr. Vaughn has adapted a number of plays, but there are no sources I can see which cover Mr. Vaughn significantly per our WP:SIGCOV guideline. For instance, Mr. Vaughn is very briefly mentioned in this source, which unfortunately isn't significant coverage of him. These sources may be in French, there is no language requirement, and that was not at all why I declined. The issue with non-English language sources is there are typically fewer reviewers willing to look at a draft, which is one of the reasons why you've had to wait for so long. I hope this helps, and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask me. I'm happy to let you know if I think a source would be good enough to help Mr. Vaughn pass our notability guideline.
