Can you please explain the definition of "notable". This page was created to link to other pages where Dr Gambescia is referenced (e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shroud_of_Turin_Research_Project). Dr Gambescia was also notable citizen of Philadelphia were he will also be referenced. There are also several notable sources that referece Dr Gambescia's work. But to expand on the matter, the content that I removed related to the notion of a single megapolis comprising all the major California urban areas. But there is no such megapolis stretching throughout all of California, there are no sources saying that there is (even the book "The Year 2000", mentioning Sansan, only predicted that such a megapolis would arise in the future, rather than saying it actually exits), and other parts of the article acknowledge this fact. It doesn't make sense to have lists of urban agglomerations and counties included in a supposed unified Californian megalopolis, but not for Northern Californian and Southern Californian megalopolises individually, in an article primarily about the division of California's urban areas into two megalopolises. I was going to ask the same question. The wording was not clear to me and I've been editing Wikipedia a while, I think I know what it was supposed to mean (and your comment above confirms it) but I don't think there is much chance of it making sense to new editors. Maybe new editors will go and read the instructions at WP:NOTIFY and learn how to ping you, before replying to your welcome message but I seriously doubt it. The phrase "Please notify me after replying off my talk page." is not as clear as it might seem. It's a matter of perspective. From what you seem to want to say, I would write instead something like "If you want a reply, please write on my Talk page", that a more direct way for new users to respond to your Welcome message or ask you a question without needing to understand how to notify you, or anything else.

The phrase tried to say a lot in a very short sentence, in an order that made sense to you but might not make sense to other readers. "Please notify me" sounds like a request, (or an order) on first reading I said to myself why would I notify you? Most readers will never need to notify you and it seems strange to say that part first because it is only necessary to notify you after several other conditions are met. The important condition "after replying" is another way of say if (1) a user wants to reply to your welcome message, and if (2) they make that reply anywhere except on your Talk page, then (3) they a new user (who may not be familiar with how notification works) should make sure to notify you if they want a response.   PamD, multiple reasons, but one very fundamental issue is that I often edit hundreds of talk pages a day if I use Huggle. Huggle hasn't yet integrated the new "temporary watchlist" feature. However, even if it did, I'd still end up with an unusually large watchlist that would need frequenting pruning once users were blocked and pages were either protected or no longer being vandalized.

  I also give out welcome templates while using Huggle, increasing the number of talk pages I edit. I wouldn't give out so many welcome templates semi-automatically, except that I receive enough thanks (sometimes via WP:THANKS) for the welcome templates that I find myself slightly reluctant in doing so. People find the templates useful enough that they could give more benefit than whatever negative comes from my "signature clutter."

  So, 99% of the problem is the above two paragraphs, which boils down to "I edit a lot," and 1% is I'm nervous I'll forget to watchlist a talk page when I need to. I see your problem, I think. But I'm not sure that the link to WP:NOTIFY is ideal, as it seems to be very much about mandatory notification when talking about other people. What you want is to encourage people to use a {{ping}} or synonym. Perhaps include the required text somewhere as "code" ... or even make that "notify" link a link to a really clearly written user subpage of your own which tells people how to use {{ping}}, including the fact that you need to sign a post in the same edit as adding it, can't just add it as a secondary afterthought edit. That might work? "If replying other than on my talk page please NOTIFY me.", with NOTIFY being the link to a super-clear explanation (including perhaps why you need to specify this, as explained above)? Hmm, even the paeg at WP:PING is a bit much for a newbie and is mostly about being notified rather than notifying. Really the only bit you need is the third paragraph:

You can "mention" a user called Example by making an edit with a link to their user page (writing [[User:Example]], {{u|Example}}, {{User|Example}}, {{user link|Example}}, {{ping|Example}}, {{Yo|Example}}, or {{reply to|Example}}) and signing the edit using four tildes (~~~~). The user "Example" will then get a notification saying where they were mentioned. This is sometimes called "pinging". See Help:Talk pages#Notifications for more information.

And even that is over-long because it gives so many options. Why not just create User:I dream of horses/notifying with that paragraph or a simplified version of it, and perhaps also offer a link "To learn more about notifications, please see Help:Notifications? Then link there from your signature. You're trying to help people with your talk postings, so make it as un-confusing as possible for them to understand how you're asking them to respond. PamD, while talk page stalkers are welcome to help out, and while you intended to be helpful, I don't think derailing the conversation to "Why have a signature like that at all?" when I'm already responding to genuine newcomers is going to have a helpful impact. This is a very very minor point about phrasing, about knowing your audience, about explaining things in the simplest most direct way possible. A new user is likely to already be overwhelmed by a whole lot of information, so better to keep it simple. I've read a little about design, and the frequent recommendation was to state the positive not the negative. So as I said earlier, it would be better to positively request that people reply on your talk page, rather than trying to explain the negative situation and the extra things they should do if they want to reply off your talk page. (Even that phrasing "off my talk page" makes sense to you but does not necessarily make sense to a beginner, who will most likely reply directly under the message and not think about it being on or off anyones talk page.) I encourage you to think not from your own perspective as the writer, an experience editor but from the perspective of the reader, a potentially new user. It is such a minor point I wont belabor it any further, it's your Welcome message, and your signature, you can do it whatever way you like, but it is one message you plan on repeating thousands of times so I thought you would want to make it as a clear as possible.
Look, I don't even understand why you and others think it is a good idea to post Welcome messages in the first place. If it was a such good idea, why has it not been automated already, a built in feature of Wikipedia? (If you want to increase your edit count there are millions of minor errors that need fixing, Category:Pages_using_infobox_film_with_unknown_empty_parameters is just one example, there are many error categories full of relatively easy fixes.) But anyway, this is the last I'll say on it and I'll go back to trying to fix things in article space. Replying on my talk page may disrupt the conversation flow; in that case, it would be considered taboo. I'd risk having even more people complain about a request for replies on my talk page than my current request. Ultimately, if you think WP:PING is problematic for newcomers, the solution is to make WP:PING more accessible to newcomers yourself.

As for the question "Why not automate the process of welcoming people?" the process is partially automated through the notification system and User:HostBot. Further use of "welcome bots" has been rejected by the community.

I don't do what I do because it adds to my edit count, not that's a healthy mindset to edit with, anyway. I do what I do because I think it helps. I appreciate you think your reports of vandalism are important...but that doesn't mean you can delete 3 of them cause they are "stale" by a couple hours. Just causes their is a backlog doesn't mean you get to break the rules to jump the line and get your vandal blocked.

Neutralhomer, really? I've been doing that for years and haven't been blocked for it. I've observed that reports that are "stale by a couple hours" tend to stick around until they are declared Officially Stale by an admin. That's why I remove them. @I dream of horses: Well, technically, you didn't do that either. Still, those three vandals live to vandalize another day. In a clear backlog, the reports could have sat there a little longer and got an official mark of "Stale" from an admin. Maybe you have "been doing that for years", doesn't make it right.

It's like if you live in a small town. Just because you have been running a red light at 2 in the morning with no one coming either way and you haven't gotten caught, doesn't mean you still won't, eventually, get pulled over for it. You don't tell the cop "well, I've been doing that for years and haven't gotten a ticket for it." He's not gonna just go "well, you have a good point" and let you go. No, dude! You're getting a bigger fine now! Same logic applies here.

@Neutralhomer: I've always been bothered by the fact that only admins get to mark reports as "stale". Admins (usually) aren't special. There was one exception where I removed a vandal that had hit the edit filter I couldn't see and was quite rightfully told off by multiple people; that would be a rare exception. Honestly, if you think the vandal you reported fell into that rare exception (or even if my removal just bothers you), go ahead and revert me. I won't edit war. I learned a lesson that day. @I dream of horses: I can only speak of the vandal that another and I were reporting, but it has been well over 12 hours. So, the reports are definitely stale now. I'll keep an eye out for the vandal I'm watching (as I already am) and I'll make a special effort to watch the other two. A message from Tova2014

I just edited the article Phyllis Robinson and created my first footnote. In the comments space I confessed that this is kind of a SWAG (scientific wild assed guess) and how I came up with the new factoid about this person of whom I have NO first hand knowledge. I just want to make sure someone will look at the edit and delete it if it's factually incorrect. Maybe a family member or whoever created the article gets automatically notified I hope? Anyway the edit's in good faith, and not a politically charged edit so far as I can tell, so I put it in. Thanks administrators for all you do!
