Your recent checkuser request[edit]

You recently submitted a request for checkuser at Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Case/Jwc4jwc4. A clerk has moved your request to Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Non-compliant temporarily; this does not mean the request has necessarily been accepted or rejected, as clerks are generally concerned with maintenance and upkeep, not making decisions on the merit of any given request. In regards to your comment on my user_talk page: just wanted to say thanks for answering my question politely and I understand and agree with the reasons you deleted the references. Thanks for your time --Trekerboy 20:33, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No worries - thanks for being so reasonable. Iain99 12:33, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just wondering where I am supposed to post sources about this movie so that I can get a review. Surely this is a notable source: http://www.boingboing.net/2007/08/06/jay_kinney_reviews_z.html

Also I have let the BBC know that Wikipedia is refusing to carry the Zeitgeist movie. Hopefully they will make a story about it, which in turn will therefore make the movie notable. ;oP Fimac_Johnson

Hi - OK I see what you mean, as that deletion log is very, very long. This is a hot topic and I must admit that within an hour of creating the roots of a balanced article wackos were logging on to try to transform the page into an advertisement for the movie. I am not a fan at all of the movie. Much of it is long-refuted, it is pure BS. The thing that bothers me is that I had to go all over blogdom and to old apologetics articles to refute all the arguments. I would like to see a critical article on this topic. I go to wikipedia as (one) source of additional information about things, and I have seen the talk boxes of other users who were surpised to come here and not find a balanced article on the topic... Redirect of MAXINE CASSIN[edit]

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on MAXINE CASSIN, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because MAXINE CASSIN is a redirect to a non-existent page (CSD R1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting MAXINE CASSIN, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. New articles[edit]

Hi Iain, Saw your note about the Neil Griffiths article. I also created ones for Linda Gillard, Carole Cadwalladr and Glen Neath. I'm assuming that these fall under the same guidelines? I'm interested in contemporary fiction so I thought I'd try and add some new names to Wikipedia. Do these articles need Wikifying? Or are they okay? Best etc etc Mousehead 16:25, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hiya. Yes, the style hints I offered generally apply to all articles (though obviously which of the many available stub templates and categories to use depends on the subject of the article). If you'd like to read about style guidelines in excruciating detail you can have a look at Wikipedia:Manual of Style, but generally if you look at other articles, especially those on similar subjects, and try to match the style they use you shouldn't go too far wrong. Iain99Balderdash and piffle 16:38, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello[edit]

Thanks for the pointers! Trying to get the hang of this. Has Glen Neath been deleted then? Or have I just lost it? Bit confused.... —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mousehead (talkcontribs) 17:23, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No, it hasn't been deleted. If an article's been deleted, you get a note at the bottom of the page like this one when you try to edit it. I found it at Glen neath - just a mistake with the capitals. I've moved it to the correct title now. Iain99Balderdash and piffle 17:33, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, just having written four novels and being published in an academic journal does not necessarily assert notability. I've written two novels (and I admit they're fully fluffy romance novels), and I've been published in academic journals, and I'm not yet considered notable enough for a Wikipedia article. The other aspect of this is that notability needs to be asserted from the initial creation of the article with links to external sources from the get go. Granted, I'm not saying Todd McEwen isn't notable - just that the article as posted when I saw it did not demonstrate notability. Lcarscad 23:58, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion templates[edit]

Please do not remove speedy deletion tags from articles, as you did with Dr. Rafal E. Dunin-Borkowski. If you do not believe the article deserves to be deleted, then please do the following:

  1. Place {{hangon}} on the page. Please do not remove any existing speedy deletion tag(s).
  2. Make your case on the article's talk page.

Administrators will look at your reasoning before deciding what to do with the article. Thank you. Stifle (talk) 23:11, 20 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think you've made a mistake - I did not create the article, and as WP:CSD notes, "Any user who is not the creator of a page may remove a speedy tag from it". In this case, the article quite obviously makes claims of importance, so I went ahead and removed the tag. Best, Iain99Balderdash and piffle 23:18, 20 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

shot at dawn[edit]

I've tried to add a minimum of relevant material to the 'execution by firing squad' article. IMHO a redirect should be to an article with at least some note on the redirected usage! The phrase 'shot at dawn' has a long tradition (but what was done in Cromwell's time??) and is not, on due inspection, completely self-evident (eg a lot of the drama in the final moments of Tosca is because the execution of Mario is at sunrise). You may like to review. I may copy to the relevant Talk page. Bob aka Linuxlad (talk) 17:41, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As somebody with an interest in Dr. Vivek Kumar Pandey -- who for some reason makes me think of moles and mallets -- you may be interested in this gent too. (Don't miss his talk page.) He's amply linked-to. -- Hoary (talk) 15:32, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Goodness me - unlike Vivek he does seem to have a reasonable claim to notability, someone obviously thinks very highly of him... apparently he's ably carrying forward the legacy of India's first persident! [1] Iain99Balderdash and piffle 18:34, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I must have been even sleepier when I wrote the above than I am now. For I failed to notice that one of the pages linking to this person was this damning one. Thus the article is speediable. Within 24 hours, I'll deal with it and the pages linking to it; right now, though, I'm racing against a WP-irrelevant "real-world" deadline. -- Hoary (talk) 20:48, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I must have been knackered as well after a long day at work, as I didn't notice your direction to the talk page. A very strange saga indeed... I thought the fact that he has been in this list since the earliest edit [2] must be some sort of proof of the claims, but now I see that that article's early history has actually been lost in a page move, and it has been edited a lot by an account which has also shown a lot of interest in the Prasads, so I'm starting to smell a rat. Ashoka Jahnavi-Prasad gets three Google scholar hits, and while GS is not complete, this does seem a little low for one of the top 1000 scientists of all time. And oddly, the normal Google hits for him are nearly all Wikipedia mirrors. Searching under Dr Ashoka Prasad gets a whole ten scholar hits, but as one of them is this, which supports the Australian story. There is a real AJ Prasad who is a fellow of the AAAS [3], but according to French Wikipedia that's an engineer called Ashoka Jahnnavi Prasad Jr (I think - my French is a bit ropey). I'm starting to feel like I've been taken in by an elaborate scam. You're right - the page needs deleting and salting. I'll cross post this to its talk page. Iain99Balderdash and piffle 21:51, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Apropos of postgraduate degrees, today I have to rush off and -- Oh, forget it. But I'll be back in a few hours, cluebat in hand. Meanwhile, I can assure you that I've removed a couple of PROD notices out of duty, not conviction. -- Hoary (talk) 22:24, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No worries - tbh Vivek's article should really be a speedy, but I'm quite conservative about speedying academic articles, plus the English is so poor and the text so dense I can't be completely sure I haven't missed something that would make him notable. As for our dubious psychiatrist and polymath, I've done some more digging and posted on that talk page at last - so much for my evening of writing stubs on real Indian ministers. Oh well, that's me for the night now - good luck with the deadline. Iain99Balderdash and piffle 23:37, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Trying hard to AGF here, but we have an articleon the guy who found the allegedly unrelated Prasad guilty of scientific misconduct in Australia. Some of the edits made by defenders of our Prasad's article make interesting reading. [4] [5] Iain99Balderdash and piffle 09:50, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

He's a goner. See this and this and this and this and this (in no particular order). -- Hoary (talk) 10:38, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Good stuff - I'll watchlist the articles he crops up on and remove and more mention of how he's carrying on the legacy of India's first president. I'm half inclined to take the 1000 scientists book back to AfD as well, as it seems to be being used mainly to promote this character, has no secondary sources and gets 36 unique Google hits, half of which look like Wikipedia mirrors. Might do that later today when I have time to do a bit more delving. Cheers Iain99Balderdash and piffle 11:30, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

An interesting idea, but let's not rush it. The fact that there are 1037 list items is most interesting. I've just checked for myself, and yes indeed there are 1037. These may include cross-references, but if so these don't include the string "see". -- Hoary (talk) 13:34, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Iain, Thanks for expanding hugely the page on Richard William Briginshaw. It is certainly in accord with what I remember. My father is the family history buff, in fact he wrote the telegraph obit in 1992 if I remember rightly. He is in between email addresses right now but I will ask him to review the page when he is back online. I'll be sure to mention the importance of sources and NPOV. Thanks again for taking my stub page and making it worthwhile. It was good to see wikipedia at work as well, it seems some folks are a bit too keen to delete stuff but the community as a whole came to the appropriate decision I think. (P.S. Thanks. It took less than five minutes actually; all I did was put her name into Google News and read the first two free pages that came up. Then I looked at a random book on Amazon - mostly to check the publication details, but that page confirmed pretty quickly that it was more than an obscure, self published work. The article did actually look a bit spammy to me at first glance as well - after all, at least 99% of new articles with professional quality photos are written by the subjects themselves or their publicists - but it's a shame more editors don't do at least a 30 second Google before deciding someone is non-notable. Some time ago, you participated in a deletion discussion concerning Allegations of Chinese apartheid. I thought you might like to know that the parent article, Allegations of apartheid, was recently nominated for deletion. Hello. I'm certainly no expert on this subject but most probably Fleam dyke had a military purpose by forming a barrier linking the river Cam to the west to dense forests on the hills to the east. Between Balsham and Fen Ditton there used to be marshland, which is why there was no need there for earthworks (from the book Where Troy Once Stood by Iman Wilkens, who is not considered a reliable source by most classic scholars). I don't know what archaeologist Prof. McKenny Hughes thinks about this marshland-theory. Anyway, in the WP-article Fen Ditton I found that "the name was first recorded in around 950 as "Dittone", meaning "the village by the ditch", derived from the Fleam Dyke, the prehistoric ditch that passed through the village from the river to Stow-cum-Quy and can still be seen just to the east of the village. The name was later changed to its present name to distinguish it from Wood Ditton." Cheers, Antiphus (talk) 20:08, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Iain99, do you really think speedy is the way to go? I know that since it was blanked by the original author, it satisfies the criteria. However, if we let the AfD nomination run its course, it will preclude the article from being easily created again. If it is speedied, the author can create it again tomorrow and thereby get around this AfD nomination. Just my thoughts. Regards, Accurizer (talk) 09:36, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hmmm... well, I was hoping that since he'd gone to the bother of blanking it twice that meant he'd given up and recreation wouldn't be a problem. Something with this name verifiably exists, is verifiably associated with the University of Allahabad and verifiably publishes work on oceanography (see here, for example)... and I still know absolutely nothing else about it. What's it's role within the university? Is it a department in itself, or a loose grouping of academics from other departments? How many people work for it? The university's own website says nothing about it. [6] It gets 35 Google hits, half of them Wikipedia mirrors, half one line mentions on an address or CV. It doesn't even seem to have a homepage. Half of the grotesque number of external links in the article have nothing to do with the centre. There aren't even enough primary sources online to write a meaningful stub. I think it might have to go to AfD after all. I'll try to write the nom tomorrow, but for the moment I have to go and rest my poor brain, which has been fried from reading too much bad prose. contaminated currency[edit]

I have reverted your removal. While much of the information was reworded from the articles, whenever the specific information was used verbatim, the info was enclosed within quotation marks and the source noted, often repeatedly. The charge of plagiarized material is unwarranted here. Please feel free to discuss the matter on my talk page if you wish. - Hexhand (talk) 14:34, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've done a substantial rewrite, adding a lot more text and citations. I was also going to add it to a few wikiprojects, as the article seems to Venn into a couple of them. Which ones would you recommend? - Hexhand (talk) 04:31, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Could you check out the contaminate currency article now? I think we've nipped that problem. :) - Hexhand (talk) 22:13, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Totally Bill Hicks[edit]

Thanks for addressing the problem with the article Totally Bill Hicks. I am, in fact, a total "inclusionist" and there's very little I actually want to see deleted. I only prod so improvements might happen. Some editors leave messages on my talk page saying "this is notable because...(blah blah blah)" when, in fact, the correct response is to tackle articles, not editors. Kudos for tackling the article. Happy editing. - Boston (talk) 22:55, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers, and I don't blame you for prodding it - the article as it stood was pretty lousy and wouldn't have been a terrible loss. I put it on my waychlist ages ago and intended to rewrite it, but as with so many other things I didn't get round to it until I noticed your prod. Fall categories[edit]

Hi Ian, thanks for your comment. I suppose you are correct about mountaineering being quite different from the walking or hiking that Paul Rée was probably doing so maybe that category is not entirely appropriate. The problem is is then finding a more appropriate category! A few of the people in the accidental fall category seem to have died falling off cliffs - presumably gorges have cliffs so that might count! First Irish person to summit K2[edit]

Gerard McDonnell climbed to the top of K2, no doubt, but he never made the descent.

Many mountaineers maintain that a successful first ascent not only involves reaching the summit, but also returning to the bottom. Indeed, George Mallory's own son John Mallory, who was only three years old when his father died, said: "To me the only way you achieve a summit is to come back alive. The job is half done if you don't get down again".

Thus we should remove first Irish person to summit K2 as a proper summit involves getting back down again alive. If another Irish person summits K2 and makes a descent that person should receive the title of first Irish person to summit K2.

Maybe we should say Gerard McDonnell was the first Irish person to climb to the top of K2 but unfortunately never made the descent, as of now no Irish person has made a successful climb of K2 as this is one of the hardest and most dangerous climbs in the world. Only 170 people approximately have made a successful climb of K2. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.41.157.129 (talk) 16:13, 3 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the note. I know that the question of whether or not a climber who dies on the descent of a mountain should be credited with a true "first ascent" is occasionally asked - nearly always in relation to Mallory and Irvine, to avoid the appearance of denigrating Hillary and Tenzing's achievement. However, in my own view it's the wrong question to ask; of course the "first person to reach the summit" of a mountain is, well, the first person to reach the summit. Anything else is just plain incorrect. A more pertinent question is whether it would diminish Hillary and Tenzing's achievement if Mallory was shown to have reached the top first; the answer is of course "no".
Outside the field of Mallory and Irvine, I don't believe the question actually comes up that much. For example, I'm a fairly avid reader of mountaineering literature, especially with regards to K2, and I don't believe I've ever seen anyone other than Al Rouse described as the first Briton to reach the summit of K2. Jonathan Pratt is sometimes described as something like "the first Briton to complete a successful ascent (Al Rouse and Julie Tullis having died on the descent)", but that's not the same as being the first person to the summit. (If you want me to dig out citations for this I can do, but I'm writing in a hurry right now as I'm going out this evening). And the source does describe him as the first Irish person to reach the summit, so it all fits in with the verifiability policy. If you want to add a clarification to the article along the lines of "he was the first Irish person to reach the top of K2, though he died on the descent in the 2008 K2 disaster" then I don't mind, though I think the article as a whole already makes the circumstances fairly clear.
I sort of see where you're coming from of course; I'm reminded of a report on the Czech alpine style ascent of the South West Face of Everest in 1988. One climber reached the top, but exhausted, all four men died on the descent. One of the climbing magazines described it as something like "a tragic end to one of the great successes of Himalayan Alpine stile climbing". Excuse me? How can an expedition be a success when all its members die? But the difference is that that's a statement of opinion, whereas the question of who was the first to reach the summit is one of simple fact. I don't think we need to wait five days to get rid of this - I have added {{db-person}}, leaving your PROD in place in case the speedy is declined. I think if I had seen the original version I would have been inclined to tag it {{db-attack}} and blank the page; but as long as it goes, it doesn't matter how. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 20:16, 23 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough. I nearly put a a db-person tag on it myself, but IIRC it made vague references to some competitions in Latin America and I had no real idea of how important they were. But then I'm quite conservative about what I speedy tag, and even I saw it as a borderline one. I'm not sad to see it go sooner. My Userpage[edit]

Sorry about antidestablishmentarianism, was experimenting. If you read User talk:Matty, I explain that MY NAME IS HONGWEI. I do a stand up comedy routines in the comedy club of my school. My best gig is this epic battle between my two alternate personalities. One is superarrogant MUBOTE vs. nerdy Hongwei. Hongwei is my Chinese name. My english name is Adam. Basically, I want to incorporate this userpage into my gig. It's not a personal attack on anyone really, just myself. Does that clear things up? --Adam Wang (talk) 21:15, 30 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I thought it was okay because:

a) Nobody reads userpages anyways? I'm a nobody, so I didn't think anyone would actually search this.
b) I thought userpages were supposed to be personal things about yourself. I plan on changing the page back to its original format(look in my history, it was very legit before).
c) Rules say that there is no "clear" line of what is a personal attack or not.
