Although I started this article, I now wonder whether it's in scope. It is copied from an open access journal, but I fear it may be too specialized and current to be in an encyclopedia. I worry that its technicality will not allow it to be updated, and that it will quickly become outdated as new research emerges.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

I reverted your addition of a quote to the Benedict Groeschel page due to the fact that the quote you supplied isn't actually a quote he said, but a paraphrasing from one of the news articles. The way was listed, implies that he actually said it that exact way, when in fact he didn't. BLP policies mean we must tread lightly and precisely when dealing with topics like this. If you read my edit summary, you'll see that the nominal size indeed isn't the issue. The issue is that you can display a 2000x1528 pixel version without rendering errors. This essentially means that Wikipedia hosts a 2000x1528 pixel version of a non-free file (and maybe you can even get bigger copies without rendering errors), which is way too big. See Category:Fair use images that should be in SVG format: "Fair-use SVGs shouldn't include more detail than is necessary to display them accurately at their current resolution." Wikipedia Ambassadors update

Hi! You're getting this message because you are or have been a Wikipedia Ambassador. A new term is beginning for the United States and Canada Education Programs, and I wanted to give you an update on some important new information if you're interested in continuing your work this term as a Wikipedia Ambassador.

You may have heard a reference to a transition the education program is going through. This is the last term that the Wikimedia Foundation will directly run the U.S. and Canada programs; beginning in June, a proposed thematic organization is likely to take over organizing the program. You can read more about the proposal here.

Another major change in the program will take effect immediately. Beginning this term, a new MediaWiki education extension will replace all course pages and Ambassador lists. (See Wikipedia:Course pages and Help:Education Program extension for more details.) Included in the extension are online volunteer and campus volunteer user rights, which let you create and edit course pages and sign up as an ambassador for a particular course.

If you would like to continue serving as a Wikipedia Ambassador — even if you do not support a class this term — you must create an ambassador profile. If you're no longer interested in being a Wikipedia Ambassador, you don't need to do anything.

Please do these steps as soon as possible

First, you need the relevant user rights for Online and/or Campus Ambassadors. (If you are an admin, you can grant the rights yourself, for you as well as other ambassadors.) Just post your rights request here, and we'll get you set up as quickly as possible.

Once you've got the ambassador rights, please set up at a Campus and/or Online Ambassador profile. You can do so at:

Going forward, the lists of Ambassadors at Special:CampusAmbassadors and Special:OnlineAmbassadors will be the official roster of who is an active Ambassador. If you would like to be an Ambassador but not ready to serve this term, you can un-check the option in your profile to publicly list it (which will remove your profile from the list).

After that, you can sign on to support courses. The list of courses will be at Special:Courses. (By default, this lists "Current" courses, but you can change the Status filter to "Planned" to see courses for this term that haven't reached their listed start date yet.)

As this is the first term we have used the extension, we know there will be some bugs, and we know the feature set is not as rich as it could be. (A big wave of improvements is already in the pipeline. And if you know MediaWiki and could help with code review, we'd love to have your help!) Please reach out to me (Sage Ross) with any complaints, bug reports, and feature suggestions. The basic features of the extension are documented at Wikipedia:Course pages, and you can see a tutorial for setting up and using them here.

Communication and keeping up to date

In the past, the Education Program has had a pretty fragmented set of communication channels. We're trying to fix that. These are the recommended places to discuss and stay up-to-date on the education program:

The education noticeboard has become the main on-wiki location for discussion of the Education Program. You can post there about broad education program issues as well as issues with individual courses.
The Ambassadors Announce email list is a very low-traffic announcements list of important information all Ambassadors need to be aware of. We encourage all Ambassadors (and other interested Wikipedians) to subscribe to the list; follow the instructions on the link to add your email address.
If you use IRC regularly, or need to try to reach someone immediately, the #wikipedia-en-ambassadors ^connect IRC channel is the place to find me and fellow Ambassadors.

Ambassador training and resources

We now have an online training for Ambassadors, which is intended to be both an orientation about the Wikipedia Ambassador role for newcomers and the manual for how to do the role. (There are parallel trainings for students and for educators as well.)

Please go through the training if you feel like you need a refresher on how a typical class is supposed to go and where the Ambassadors fit in, or if you want to review and help improve it. If there's something you'd like to see added, or other suggestions you have for it, feel free to edit the training and/or leave feedback. A primer on setting up and using course pages is included in the educators' training.

The Resources page of the training is the main place for Ambassador-related resources. If there's something you think is important as a resource that's not on there, please add it.

Finally, whether or not you work with any classes this term, I encourage you to post entries to the Trophy Case whenever you see excellent work from students or if you have great examples from past semesters. And, as always, let students (and other editors!) know when they do things well; a little WikiLove goes a long way!

April - National Contribution Month

Good day InverseHypercube,

During the month of April, Wikimedia Canada is preparing the National Contribution Month, and we are looking for experienced contributors to organize a contribution day (or half-day) in their region.

Contribution days are activities where Wikipedia's contributors, students, or anybody interested in contributing to Wikipedia meets together to collectively improve a predetermined theme. This meetings generally take place in library where references are easy of access, but can be organized in any communal room. Beside improving articles, a goal of this participatory workshops is to initiate neophyte in the cooperative contribution of Wikipedia.

If you are interested in organizing or participating in a contribution day in your region, communicate witht he national team on the project's talk page. The exact agenda of each local event is left to the discretion of the organizer. Help is available for the organization from contributors who already organized these type of days, so don't be worried. If you have any questions or want more information, don't hesitate to contact us.

A favor -Environmental law articles ready for preliminary review

Hi InverseHypercube. I see that you're an online ambassador. I'm the Professor for Aaron Frank's environmental law class, and while you're not signed up for my course, I was wondering if you'd be willing to take a look at any or all of the articles my students are working on. One of the aspects of this sort of course is that students understand that they are putting their work out before the wikipedia community for review. In the past, there hasn't been that much activity on their pages as they were working on them. I was hoping that if you get a chance you can take a look.

The students now have draft articles in mainspace and are starting to review each other's articles, and they could also use a preliminary review by an experienced Wikipedian in this area. Hi. Two editors are advocating for the exclusion of any mention in the Zeitgeist: The Movie article that Peter Joseph, the creator of that film has stated publicly that words attributed to him in a story cited as a source in the article misquoted him, and that he has not distanced himself from the ideas expressed in that film, as that cited source indicates. I have responded to their arguments, but neither of them has responded directly to my counterarguments, but simply repeat the same statements of theirs over and over. Myself and one other editor disagree with them, so two editors are for the material's inclusion, and two are for its exclusion, with no sign of consensus in sight. Course numbering in North America

I noticed that you created the above-mentioned article in 2010. It still doesn't have any credible sources. In fact, off the everything.com link ( http://everything2.com/title/College+Course+Numbers ), it specifically mentions the MIT numbering system, which is completely different, and, in fact, different in different "Courses" (what would be called "departments" in most universities). If I don't hear from you in the next week or so, I'm going to propose deletion.

Circumstantial evidence from the MIT web site suggests lexicographical ordering rather than numerical (plus alphabetic suffix); in other words there may be courses 2.04 and 2.042.

I'm also familiar with the CalTech system (at least in 1972-78), which was generally:

- 1-99 undergraduate courses ("1" is usually the "101" of the "standard" system)
- 100-199 beginning graduate courses
- 200-299 advanced graduate courses
- 300-399 seminars
- (perhaps higher numbers might be used for independent study classes, but I think some of those were also in the 300s)
and a suffix, "a", "b", or "c" indicates the quarter the course segment is usually taught, although I recall one course I took where 5a was winter quarter and 5b was spring quarter.

Project tags

Hey, just wanted to comment about removing your tagging of the soring and Horse Protection Act articles as part of WP Animal rights. While I don't know if there is a blanket project guideline to tag every article dealing with animal abuse for the AR project, if it isn't a blanket policy, I'd prefer we did not tag these two for AR, and the reason is because the people I can only describe as the "soring denialists" use the AR movement as a boogeyman to drum up support for their positions against federal legislation, federal inspection and criminal penalties for violators. Almost 100% of the vandalism that isn't just the drive-by kiddie stuff is from IPs who are trying to whitewash the articles or remove references to how prevalent and harmful the practice is. I'd prefer not to draw their attention further and risk a POV tagging battle next. Hope that clarifies what my reasoning is here. Montanabw ^(talk) 01:24, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

It's really unfortunate that there are people doing this (wouldn't be surprised if some of those IPs are from industry), and I'm not sure giving in to them is the right thing to do.
