Administrators' newsletter – September 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

Technical news

Arbitration

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

Miscellaneous

  • Tech tip: The "Browse history interactively" banner shown at the top of Special:Diff can be used to easily look through a history, assemble composite diffs, or find out what archive something wound up in.

Nominations for the upcoming project coordinator election have opened. A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next coordination year. The project coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining our internal structure and processes. They do not, however, have any authority over article content or editor conduct, or any other special powers. More information on being a coordinator is available here. If you are interested in running, please sign up here by 23:59 UTC on 14 September! Voting will commence on 15 September. If you have any questions, you can contact any member of the current coord team. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 02:04, 2 September 2023 (UTC)

Question from DoubletakePR (14:54, 2 September 2023)

I have two projects I'm working on - one is to add to an already existing person's profile Another is one where I had enlisted a Wiki Specialist service and wanted to get the information published - it is a biography for a living person (artist) --DoubletakePR (talk) 14:54, 2 September 2023 (UTC)

ScottishFinnishRadish, any idea what to do about the wiki specialist service? — Ixtal ( T / C ) Non nobis solum. 15:38, 2 September 2023 (UTC)
With no further information there's not much we can do. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 23:05, 2 September 2023 (UTC)
DoubletakePR, what is your relation to these people? — Ixtal ( T / C ) Non nobis solum. 12:34, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
One of them (Lance Rodgers) is my spouse which is why I hired an outside Wikispecialist to create the article and just provided links to all the media throughout the years - I know you are not supposed to be related and being in the PR industry I know it needs to be factual - so I have that developed from the firm at least 85% and wanted it reviewed before it was submitted -
The 2nd one to edit - (Bill Edwards) is a client (no relation) that we have been working with his team re: his history and legacy that is not currently listed on his existing Wikipedia page - which is why we wanted to add awards and philanthropic factual events that can also be backed up with credible news articles.. WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  • Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  • Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

I will be standing down as a judge after the end of the contest. I think the Cup encourages productive editors to improve their contributions to Wikipedia and I hope that someone else will step up to take over the running of the Cup. Sturmvogel 66 (talk), and Cwmhiraeth (talk)

Question from Siruans (17:36, 8 September 2023)

Hey, Ixtal, Happy to meet you as my mentor; The article "Inflammatory reflex" popped up in my editing suggestions. It has multiple issue warnings, including Conflict of interest, Written like an advertisement, and Fringe theories. However, I read through the article and checked if the sources say what the article cites them for. There did not seem to be any reason for these issue warnings. Am I not seeing the issues or can the issue warnings be removed? Siruans (talk) 17:37, 8 September 2023 (UTC)

Siruans, when referring to an article you can use square brackets to create what we call a "wikilink". For example, [[Inflammatory reflex]] is rendered as Inflammatory reflex (see Help:Introduction to editing with Wiki Markup/3).
I myself am not familiar with medical topics, so I recommend you ask in Wikipedia:Wikiproject Medicine's talk page as editors there might be able to point out the particular issues with the article. Conflict of interest might be one of the authors of the papers adding them to the page. The "therapeutic potential" section is likely the one causing those warnings, but I can't say for sure myself. Good luck! If the article seems a bit too confusing or daunting, feel free to try editing another article. — Ixtal ( T / C ) Non nobis solum. 18:03, 8 September 2023 (UTC)

Question from Fuzzsoth (09:17, 13 September 2023)

Hi. Randall here, I'm new and I've been tasked by Steve Tappin to update his Wikipedia article. I attempted to change his basic information this morning from content generated directly by Steve himself, and the edit was accepted and then someone called MaterialScientist deleted them and said I haven't cited a reliable source? How can I cite something which Steve has written himself? Thanks, Randall --Fuzzsoth (talk) 09:17, 13 September 2023 (UTC)

Hi, Fuzzsoth. On wikipedia, we expect information to be added to include a source so that other editors as well as readers can verify that the information is in fact correct. You can read more about the type of sources one should use for biographies in Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons#Reliable_sources. Additionally, some of the text you added had a promotional tone so I recommend you read Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons#Tone. Regarding how to actually cite a source, I recommend you follow the tutorial at Help:Introduction to referencing with VisualEditor/1, which should guide you on how to add the sources themselves. Please let me know if you want more help or use the {{ping}} template (by writing {{ping|Ixtal}}) to notify me elsewhere on the wiki to ask me another question.
You should also know that while editing the pages of people you know, either for payment or as a favor, carries a number of expectations as well. Please read Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide for how to manage your conflict of interest with Steve Tappin. — Ixtal ( T / C ) Non nobis solum. 09:28, 13 September 2023 (UTC)

Question from Sparkinthedark22 (07:53, 20 September 2023)

Hi. how’s it going apparently you are my mentor --Sparkinthedark22 (talk) 07:53, 20 September 2023 (UTC)

Hi, Sparkinthedark22. It's going well, been doing a lot of reading recently and thinking of what article to write next. How about you? I hope you're enjoying your time on the wiki so far ^u^ — Ixtal ( T / C ) Non nobis solum. 08:18, 20 September 2023 (UTC)
I’m doing just dandy! I’ve just been playing some Mario games and listening to pop music while petting my cat! Having a good day, what kind of books do you read? Sparkinthedark22 (talk) 08:50, 20 September 2023 (UTC)
Sparkinthedark22, mostly family fiction and spy thrillers. Recently finished The Hunt for Red October and We All Want Impossible Things (seems like the latter doesn't have a wiki article). Right now I'm reading The Honourable Schoolboy and plan to follow it up with My Family and Other Animals. I quite like Mario games. If you want to work on mario articles I do recommend it as they're well done and have a good number of nice editors helping out. — Ixtal ( T / C ) Non nobis solum. 10:01, 20 September 2023 (UTC)

Just to clarify, should the "X soccer national team" articles be moved to have "football" instead of "soccer" in the title? I'm going to mass move all the pages that are affected by that RfC and I'd like to make sure I don't do anything stupid. – MaterialWorks 22:14, 20 September 2023 (UTC)

I apologize for the ommission, MaterialWorks. The RFC was about whether or not to include the gender of the team and therefore does not affect consensus on the soccer vs. football aspect. If an article uses soccer national team the new title should use soccer. — Ixtal ( T / C ) Non nobis solum. 22:19, 20 September 2023 (UTC)
Alright, thanks. – MaterialWorks 22:20, 20 September 2023 (UTC)
Thank you, MaterialWorks. I've never done a mass move myself but editors like you that volunteer for this sort of thing are very valuable and rarely get thanked enough. Hope you have a good rest of the week :) — Ixtal ( T / C ) Non nobis solum. 22:53, 20 September 2023 (UTC)

I don’t know how on earth you read a clear consensus in favor of moving all articles in that discussion. The opinion were split in a 6vs5 ratio. I have reverted your utterly inaccurate closure.Tvx1 23:06, 20 September 2023 (UTC)

Tvx1, I'll answer in more depth tomorrow (it is 2am local time), but if you disagree with a closure I'd urge you not to revert it outright before we discuss it a bit. — Ixtal ( T / C ) Non nobis solum. 23:42, 20 September 2023 (UTC)
I too am confused on how you determined consensus, and am even more confused on why the reasoning wasn't immediately clarified. I see an 8-5 split (not including one bizarre comment regarding biological sex), which while it does seem to favor adding the gender, it's not clear on a policy-basis why the argument to always include gender has been determined to have consensus. Jay eyem (talk) 04:55, 21 September 2023 (UTC)
Jay eyem and Tvx1, while editors in favor of keeping it to a case-by-case basis cited WP:PRIMARY, editors in favor of applying a standard cited WP:NATDIS (which I took also to mean the WP:PRECISION section it is a part of), the use of men's and women's in other sport team articles as well, and disagreed with the former group in how PRIMARY affects the dispute. SMcCandlish's mention of WP:PRIMARYREDIRECT seemed particularly acute to me: if most sources mentioning Gambia's national team refer to the men's team, redirecting Gambia national football team to the men's article in the same way United States national basketball team redirects to the men's seems to be the option out of the two discussed that is most strongly supported by policy.
I will say though that the consensus was not necessarily very strong (note: this does not mean it does not exist), and understand your disagreement with how I evaluated the consensus. It could perfectly be that other reasonable editors would have closed differently. However, if you wish to "revert" my closure the way to do so is not to undo my edit, Tvx1, but to start a thread at WP:AN as described by WP:CLOSECHALLENGE. If the community believes I misjudged the consensus in the discussion I will then revert the closure myself and let another, uninvolved editor close it. — Ixtal ( T / C ) Non nobis solum. 11:58, 21 September 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for the clarification! I don't have especially strong feelings on the matter, but would not be surprised if there was pushback. Kind of surprised with that particular situation with USA basketball, I would have thought that would be a disambiguation page, but I don't follow the sport. I suspect sources will start following suit more and more with the change with enough time, but I think the argument with WP:PRIMARYREDIRECT makes a lot of sense. Might help to add the explanation on WT:FOOTY if possible. Jay eyem (talk) 20:12, 21 September 2023 (UTC)
Jay eyem, I'll add the clarification tomorrow. I can see how it would've been helpful to add it as part of the close and apologize for disregarding the importance of explaining the closure rationale in the closure itself. — Ixtal ( T / C ) Non nobis solum. 20:54, 21 September 2023 (UTC)
@MaterialWorks and Ixtal: a lightly attended RfC at a WikiProject page is not a valid reason to move hundreds of pages, especially one where opinions were so clearly split. Please use WP:RM if you wish to proceed with these title changes, as per established practice.  — Amakuru (talk) 06:56, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
Amakuru, do you believe the RFC should be re-ran in a more public discussion board, such as WP:VPP? — Ixtal ( T / C ) Non nobis solum. 08:43, 23 September 2023 (UTC)
Hi Ixtal and thanks for your response. My opinion (which others may disagree with of course) is that because this is at heart a Requested move decision, albeit one affecting lots of pages, the correct venue is via the formal process outlined at WP:RM. This most often takes place at the talk page of one of the affected articles, but it can also be at another page, the effect is similar. The main advantages are (a) affected pages get tagged so anyone watching them specifically will see it. (b) it's listed at the central list of ongoing discussions, which brings in people with expertise in article title decisions. Of course, the WikiProject can still be notified via a talk page message and it could be posted with a link to the RM at VPP too if it was deemed a wide reaching decision. Recent examples of large-scale moves of football articles dine in this way can be seen at Talk:1872_FA_Cup_Final#Requested_move_5_January_2023 and Talk:AC Milan#Requested move 18 May 2023. I think we'd get more participation and a clearer outcome if we reran it that way. Cheers  — Amakuru (talk) 09:21, 23 September 2023 (UTC)
That seems like a good way to properly move forward with the discussion. MaterialWorks, I'll amend my close to mention a RM will be started soon, would you be okay filing the RM? I don't really have the time this weekend to go through all the pages. — Ixtal ( T / C ) Non nobis solum. 09:39, 23 September 2023 (UTC)
Yeah, I'll cook something up. – MaterialWorks 10:10, 23 September 2023 (UTC)
Thanks — Ixtal ( T / C ) Non nobis solum. 10:29, 23 September 2023 (UTC)
Done, see Talk:Afghanistan national football team § Requested move 23 September 2023. If you have any suggestions for how to improve the nom, please tell me. Pinging @Amakuru too. – MaterialWorks 10:39, 23 September 2023 (UTC)
MaterialWorks, I think you have to explicitly mention every other article as well, not just etc.... — Ixtal ( T / C ) Non nobis solum. 12:56, 23 September 2023 (UTC)
Because of the notification system. — Ixtal ( T / C ) Non nobis solum. 12:56, 23 September 2023 (UTC)
@MaterialWorks: if you don't object, I will (a) move back the articles that have already been moved, and (b) add the remaining affected pages to the RM, just for clarity and to avoid confusion. Obviously the eventual fate of them will hinge on what's decided. Cheres  — Amakuru (talk) 12:59, 23 September 2023 (UTC)
Sure, go ahead. – MaterialWorks 14:17, 23 September 2023 (UTC)
Thanks.  Done.  — Amakuru (talk) 15:30, 23 September 2023 (UTC)
