Djenné-Djenno

Hi. I noticed that there's a discrepancy between the title of the article you plan to work on (Djenné-Djenno) and the way you refer to it in your sandbox (Jenné-Jeno). The article itself uses both spellings.

Do you have any idea as to which spelling is used more widely in English? If it's Jenné-Jeno, then you might consider moving the article to that title. If it's Djenné-Djenno, then I would suggest sticking to that spelling in your additions. Whatever your decision, I think that standardizing spelling within the article would be a good idea. (If you aren't sure which spelling would be best, you might try a move request, to see what other editors think; if you decide to go that way, ask me if you need any help.) This is a tricky question - all of the old archaeology reports refer to the site as "Jenné-Jeno," I think. On the other hand, the modern town in this location is now often spelled Djenné. Let me talk to my colleague/friend who's worked at the site recently; she'll know the current consensus about spelling. I'll get back to you ASAP. Ninafundisha (talk) 00:25, 27 October 2014 (UTC)

In all the literature I have read it has been spelled Jenné-Jeno. I was under the impression from one of the site reports that this is the English spelling while Djenné-Djenno is the French spelling. I would love to know what the current consensus on spelling is however, so I may include it on the final page. JLebowski94 (talk)

User:Ian (Wiki Ed) and User:JLebowski94, I've heard back from my colleague who works at the site. Here's what she says: "The spelling of Jenné-jeno is actually somewhat complicated. The modern, neighboring town is Djenné. When Susan and Rod started publishing in the late 1970s there was a lot of talk about changing the town's name to Jenné (the "D" was seen as an artifact of French colonialism), so they decided to spell it "Jenné-jeno" instead of "Djenné-djeno." However, the town's proposed name change never happened. The site sign (located at the edge of the site, photo attached) spells it with Ds, but all of the academic publications use "Jenné-jeno." I'm not sure what is most appropriate for the English Wikipedia page, but probably "Jenné-jeno". Either is probably ok; the important thing is to ensure that both spellings redirect to the page." So... I think perhaps we should consider moving the page to retitle it "Jenné-jeno" - thoughts? I wondered if you'd be interested in sharing some of your experiences working on this site for our blog? We could use your real name or your Wikipedia username.
