Wikipedia and copyright[edit]

Control copyright icon Hello JSYY95! While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Evaders99 (talk) 17:59, 19 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Using my own pictures but failed[edit]

The pictures that I used are my own pics, taken by my artistes, so I don't understand how it works and how I should do to publish a new photo. There is option for Own Photo, but have to select those options, got me lost. Thanks! JSYY95 (talk) 00:32, 20 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

JSYY95, there are are two issues at hand here with your statement above:
  1. You have a Conflict of Interest (COI) with the subject(s) in the article(s). What constitutes as COI is defined by the Wikipedia community, and COI editing is seldom tolerated here.
  2. Release of copyright of images.
For COI, there are two things you have to do:
  1. Disclose COI on your user page, and also in the affected article's Talk pages. See: WP:DISCLOSE. If this files over your head, reply here to confirm which pages you have a COI, and one of us more experience editors can do it for you.
  2. For future edits, request for an unrelated editor to review your proposed changes in the article's Talk page. See Wikipedia:Edit requests on the steps, and Talk:Oasia Hotel Downtown as an example (there is an employee there requesting for additions/changes. Many of the requests are considered and accepted, albeit some with changes to tone down on the promotional materials/tone).
For release of copyright of images, i.e. the ones you have uploaded, like c:File:Ferlyn Wong.jpg:
  • If you are the copyright holder of the image, please confirm the permission by filling up an email template and sending it to the volunteer editors on commons via OTRS. Instructions as linked here: c:Commons:Email templates.
  • After sending the email to OTRS, on the file page, add the following at the top of the page: {{subst:OP}}. – robertsky (talk) 02:29, 20 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Robertsky, so complicated. sad. so if i use my own pictures, i have to go through so many steps? is not like the photos is others. like the photo taken by ourselves. We are okay for others to use, since she posted it on instagram already. If i use the "upload file" and choose own photo option, I still have to use the email template? Just want to update on the wiki only, but ended up so many steps and restriction. - JSYY95 (talk) 02:55, 20 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
JSYY95, unfortunately yes. instagram TnCs are clear that the copyright of images are held by its users. Wikipedia survives on copyright-free materials as much as possible. Since you already have uploaded the file(s), you are just short of sending in the email for verification. – robertsky (talk) 03:16, 20 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Robertsky, I send in the email. but if that's doesnt work, i gonna give up. is just a pic and I have to spend so much time on it. what about using pictures that are already on google? - JSYY95 (talk) 07:16, 20 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
