John Brunner (CEO) is being deleted. What do you think? I think he is not a career politician so trying to delete it because he's a minor politican is not right. He was a CEO of a large company, not a local plumbing company or local landscaper, but a company with sales of about half a billion per year. True, not a multinational giant, like Exxon or Apple, but not a small fry, like AAA Tree Service of Amarillo, TX or ABC Shoe Shine Stand of Broome, WA, Australia. Possible exception to the DPL bot

Hi there, whilst doing some dab fixing, I came across a dab marked with dab needed {{dn}} template, but the link was incorrect - it wasn't the most likely dab page. I didn't know enough about the topic to solve which article was actually correct, so I changed the dab page, but left the dn tag in place. Do you think that your bot could detect if the dab already has a dn tag after it, and hence is known to be a dab that is hard to solve, and not notify the editor about it? Thanks from me also. When I went to correct the Legend of the Dragon link (I'd originally simply changed a lower case d to capital) on the Kix! (TV channel) page, the dab solver told me there was another link on the page that also needed fixing. Both now link to the TV series pages instead of the disambig ones. Hey, I think you can unlock the Steven Geller page. Did/do you work for him? There's no reason to lock it, so please unlock it. Please note that WP:RFC/AAMC is not simply a repeat of WP:RFC/AAT, and is attempting to achieve better results by asking a more narrowly-focused, policy-based question of the community. Assumptions based on the previous RFC should be discarded before participation, particularly the assumption that Wikipedia has or inherently needs to have articles covering generalized perspective on each side of abortion advocacy, and that what we are trying to do is come up with labels for that. Toolserver

After spending most of August in a state of extremely high replication lag, the toolserver briefly got back to normal in early September — however, for the past 19 days, even though the replication lag has officially been at zero the untagged uncats list is not updating at all. No matter how many times I click on the update button, it just cycles endlessly without actually updating or picking up any new articles (or even updating how long ago the page was "last updated", which is still at 19 days even though I've probably hit the update button at least once every single day since.) I don't know if the problem is with the toolserver itself or with the untagged uncats tool, but I thought you should know because whatever the problem is it obviously needs to be fixed. It was the same problem. I have a ugly hack in place that shuts the script down if someone hits Update or Regenerate too many times at once. If I don't do that, someone could knock down all my Toolserver apps by tying up a database connection with each click. Problem is, the shutdown doesn't get cleared unless I manually take care of it. I know I need to code a better solution but I haven't got to it - and it hasn't been a problem until now. If this persists I'll have to look into it. --JaGatalk 17:39, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

Just for the record, based on your explanation I wonder if the actual problem may have been that for some reason the database connections weren't closing properly when they stopped being active -- because typically what would happen is that I'd hit the button, it would cycle and cycle and cycle and cycle for ten minutes or so without actually pulling any results in, and then after it finally stopped and the page went back to resting state I'd try again. Certainly most of the time I'm the only person on Wikipedia who actually works with that tool on anything approaching a daily basis, so if there was a problem it was more than likely connected directly to me -- but that's the only explanation I can think of that might have resulted in me personally overloading the script, because that's certainly the closest I ever came to "pounding" the button.

It's also worth noting that as I initially mentioned, this problem only began after the toolserver went through a phase of extremely high replag (I think it was up to two weeks at one point) that lasted for most of August. Although I'm not familiar with all the details, my understanding is that something was changed on the Wikipedia server which the toolserver couldn't cope with and so the toolserver had to be reprogrammed to catch up -- so since your hack never caused problems until after that issue was fixed, I wonder if maybe there was a new compatibility problem with whatever was changed at that time. I agree with your compatibility problem theory. I've just deployed a new version of the script that should be more robust - I've added code for it to eventually clean up after itself when the problem occurs. How to disable DPL bot

To stop receiving messages from DPL bot, use the {{bots}} template anywhere on your talk page. Here's the syntax:
{{bots|deny=DPL bot}}

A) I am not new to Wikipedia I have been editing articles for over ten years now.

B) I am an accomplished music and entertainment author currently 72 years old and recently celebrated by 50th year in the field.

C) I find it effronterous to come back after working on a page for two days straight to find it all erased by people who were either A) not born when the events took place or B) not having been to either one or both as I have been.

D) Numerous administrative forums within Wikipedia state that any article heretofore deemed as dry and stodgy-sounding may be rewritten into a more `chatty' style in order to appeal to a wider audience.

The page in question has already been reported to the administration for Page Protection as well as under Edit Wars.

Toolserver again, different problem

Looks like the previous problem is behaving normally now...except that now there's a new problem (or rather a new twist on issues that we've seen before) cropping up.

  1. There are currently 40 articles stuck on the list which were deleted in August, and have never been recreated since, but which won't drop from the list no matter what I do to resolve them (recreate, tag, categorize, redelete, etc.) These articles are Ajk college, Alice Chesley, Application to electrical networks, Audesi, Bab-e-khyber, Basic Skill Charter Mark, Basic definitions and background, Cactuq, Computer Assisted Farming System, Costarrica's Next Top Model, Top Boy, Costarrica's Next Top Model, Top Boy, Cycle 1, Costarrica's Next Top Model, Top Boy, Cycle 2, David Munir, Demonstrating Size (dimension), Effective resistances and Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator, Giorgos Litsas, Illuminati NSA Web Hoax, Jorge Luke, Kamal Al Hajj, Lawrence Huang, Luxury Lounge FM, National Distance Learning Week, On determinant identities, Otago Country R.F.U., Project string game, Redland Liedertafel, Shawnee rivera, ShiningHub.com, St.Michael, Yorktown, Stathis tsevas, TEEKARMAFI, Tamika newhouse, Terminal Bliss, The square root of the minus Laplacian, Thomas Lacey, Torreslfchero/common.css, Up against, Varun Grover, Vincotto Salentino and Ziad abdeen. A similar problem cropped up once before, and as I recall you ended up having to hardcode the titles in question directly into the bot programming as manual exclusions -- but I worry that if we don't find and fix the problem at its real root, then I'm going to have to keep coming to you over and over again with new lists of deleted articles to exclude, and I think we'd both rather avoid having to do all that extra work day after day.
  2. As well, in the past two days there have been somewhere between 50 and 100 articles which went through the old blank-and-revert and/or page move problems, again back in August. However, this time the standard fix, saving a null or minor edit to the article, didn't drop the articles from the list -- instead, I've been forced in every case to actually delete and then restore the pages to get them off the uncats list (except for one page where I wasn't able to do so as the page had more than 5,000 edits in its history and thus couldn't be deleted without steward privilages, but I did manage to drop that title by replacing the categories with an uncat tag and then restoring the categories.) If you need to see the specific titles that were involved, you can look at my deletion logs; any title which I've deleted in the past two days with the edit summary "temporary deletion to fix a system bug; will recreate momentarily", and then restored shortly afterward, was suffering from either this problem or the next one I'm about to mention.
  3. Problem #2 is also now extending to redirects, with several titles which were redirected to other articles in the same time frame also showing up on the current generation of the list -- and again, the only way to get such titles off the list has been to delete and then restore them. Again, there's one special case, Prarie Point, Texas, which is a redirect that still refuses to drop even though I've deleted and restored it twice and tried adding it to Category:Temporary maintenance holdings.

So the basic problem here is that some quirky stuff which happened in August is suddenly polluting the uncats list for some reason. Bearcat (talk) 20:50, 28 October 2012 (UTC)

The good news is today's version of the list didn't pick up any new deleted pages (although all of the same 40 titles that I mentioned before are still stuck on the list), so that may turn out to have been just a one time thing. It did pick up two new redirects, but they both behaved properly when I tried to resolve them. Bearcat (talk) 16:06, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

Just to let you know, as of today the toolserver list hasn't picked up any new problems since that list I posted earlier. It is still catching redirects sometimes, but deleting and then undeleting those titles has succeeded in dropping them. The same 41 articles that I listed in my post above are still stuck on the list, however. My workaround for the time being has been to keep a text file of those titles, and then do a list comparison against the new daily list so that I can filter those articles out before I actually start running the batch — but since it appears to be a one-time problem, I guess you may as well just hardcode those titles into the bot as manual exclusions if and when you get a chance. Same list of articles (the 40 in item #1 above and Prarie Point, Texas) are all still stuck on the toolserver list as of December 1. Would really be helpful if you could hardcode them as exclusions soon, because it's a real pain in the butt to still have to work around them after a full month. Disambiguation link notice

Hi Thanks for your message about the disambiguation link in my editing of the "Aggie MacKenzie" page. Since your last message, I have made a special effort not to do this by using the link I've put in place and, if it's wrong, then I remove the link. I was sure that I had done that for the National Students Union but obviously not and I apologize.

It's been a while

Hi all, sorry for my extended absence. I'm a father now, and that, along with a family tragedy and my return to college, has conspired to take almost all of my time/energy. I have to go into semi-retirement for a while, but I don't want to let everything we've worked for go by the wayside. I'll try to be more responsive in the future, but there will necessarily be big gaps. I just wanted to let you know I'm still around.

BTW, concerning the issues with DPL bot recreating deleted pages just to place a {{dablinks}} template (which, I'd like to point out, is due to imperfect replication on Toolserver's part, not a problem with the bot), I have an idea for a fix, but it will be a while before I have a chance to implement it. If it works, I'll apply the same solution to a similar problem Bearcat has reported for uncategorized articles.

Hopefully I'll be able to come by more often in the future.

I am sorry to hear that you've had some bad goings on, but I'm so glad you are back - and just in time! I am offering fabulous cash prizes for next months disambig project. DPL bot errors

Since you're back (at least somewhat), could you please look into some errors which were reported at User talk:DPL bot but never responded to? In particular, the bot picked up one of these three edits as adding a DAB link (bot msg), when none of them did. Likewise, it thought [2] or [3] added one (bot msg). Also, this edit (bot msg). I've seen those errors and I must say I'm not sure of the cause. Perhaps something is wrong with the regex I use to identify hatnotes. Figuring it out will take some time, and I doubt I'll be able to do it this semester. Thanks for getting back to me. It doesn't seem to be that common, given that the vast majority of the messages left for you are about legitimate dab-links. If you can send me the regular expressions which you're using I'd be more than happy to look over them and see if I can figure out what's matching that shouldn't be. While wikifying an article, I created two links to dab pages b/c I didn't know (and didn't have the patience to check to see if it was obvious) which of those who used a common name was intended. I marked the links with {{dn}}. Links thusly marked should probably be ignored by the bot, since the editor is thereby indicating that he or she is aware of the dablink, but is not in a position to fix it him- or herself. Greetings, old friend. I hope you are well. I have a few requests.

First, there is a contentious discussion of our recurring problems with math dabs at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Mathematics#Disambiguation help needed with Matrix algebra. I am thinking that the solution may be to set up a sort of mini-DPL project just for the math specialists, with their own monthly report of mathdabs with the most incoming links, math articles containing disambig links, and the like. How much work would it take to set something like that up?

Second, can we set up a bot which will go through the articles with the oldest "disambiguation needed" tags, determine which editor added the link in the first place, and drop a note on that editor's page asking them to fix it?

The mathdab contest would unfortunately be quite a bit of work and I just don't have the time these days. But doesn't dispenser do some category-related things with Dab Solver? That could be something, at least.
Regarding the "oldest dablink creator" bot, I considered that some time ago but it quickly became apparent that it would be almost impossible to get reliable data. Page moves and merges would be especially problematic - when you try to build a true history of an article it becomes crazy unmanageable very quickly, and of course any single mistake is met with torches and pitchforks. Corrected HTML on DPL Bot's talk page

I noticed raw <center> HTML tags in the source DPL Bot's talk page. Wikipedia doesn't appear to correct this, so consequently as a web developer I thought I'd offer some friendly advice to avoid the use of center tags. They are obsolete as of HTML5 and will soon no longer work in modern browsers. Centering is for CSS. Wikipedia does have a center template, or in the case of bot's user page, you could use the title parameter of the divbox template. I'm still a relatively new contributor to Wikipedia so do please correct me if such usage is in fact acceptable. Thanks! MusikAnimal (talk) 19:51, 26 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi, MusikAnimal, friendly talk page stalker here.  :-) It looks like the changes you made did no harm, so I'm sure JaGa won't have a problem with them. But, technically, they were not necessary. Wikipedia pages aren't written in HTML, but in wikitext, which has its own syntax and its own tags. Some of these happen to be identical to HTML tags, but some (like <nowiki>) are not. The MediaWiki internal parser translates the wikitext into HTML, and it can handle a <center> tag any way its programmers choose. So the question isn't whether that tag is valid HTML, but whether it's valid wikitext. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 20:53, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

Good to know! However, using Chrome's web inspector, I can see that center tags are in fact being generated. This is AFTER I made the changes... so apparently the MeadiaWiki parser is a bit outdated. As aforementioned, I centered the text using the title parameter of the divbox template, this will generate center tags, where the center template correctly uses CSS. Interesting! Not much you can really do unless you want to strictly stick to the center template (or write your own DIV with added styling). Lastly, the parser must surely translate wiki-specific tags and keep any HTML tags intact? With exception of script tags of course, or anything else worth restricting for security reasons. WikiCup 2013 February newsletter

Round 1 is now over. The top 64 scorers have progressed to round 2, where they have been randomly split into eight pools of eight. At the end of April, the top two from each pool, as well as the 16 highest scorers from those remaining, will progress to round 3. Commiserations to those eliminated; if you're interested in still being involved in the WikiCup, able and willing reviewers will always be needed, and if you're interested in getting involved with other collaborative projects, take a look at the WikiWomen's Month discussed below.

Round 1 saw 21 competitors with over 100 points, which is fantastic; that suggests that this year's competition is going to be highly competative. Our lower scores indicate this, too: A score of 19 was required to reach round 2, which was significantly higher than the 11 points required in 2012 and 8 points required in 2011. The score needed to reach round 3 will be higher, and may depend on pool groupings. In 2011, 41 points secured a round 3 place, while in 2012, 65 was needed. Our top three scorers in round 1 were:

  1. Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), primarily for an array of warship GAs.
  2. London Miyagawa (submissions), primarily for an array of did you knows and good articles, some of which were awarded bonus points.
  3. New South Wales Casliber (submissions), due in no small part to Canis Minor, a featured article awarded a total of 340 points. A joint submission with Alaska Keilana (submissions), this is the highest scoring single article yet submitted in this year's competition.

Featured topics have still played no part in this year's competition, but once again, a curious contribution has been offered by British Empire The C of E (submissions): did you know that there is a Shit Brook in Shropshire? With April Fools' Day during the next round, there will probably be a good chance of more unusual articles...

March sees the WikiWomen's History Month, a series of collaborative efforts to aid the women's history WikiProject to coincide with Women's History Month and International Women's Day. A number of WikiCup participants have already started to take part. The project has a to-do list of articles needing work on the topic of women's history. Those interested in helping out with the project can find articles in need of attention there, or, alternatively, add articles to the list. Those interested in collaborating on articles on women's history are also welcome to use the WikiCup talk page to find others willing to lend a helping hand. Another collaboration currently running is an an effort from WikiCup participants to coordinate a number of Easter-themed did you know articles. Contributions are welcome!

However, I found that a bot with botflag has "nominornewtalk" right, and that means the orange bar will not appear to those users. Does your bot behave in this way?
