Recent software changes

VisualEditor news

  • In the toolbar, the menu to edit the styles (like bold, italic, etc.) now has a down arrow (). The order of the Insert menu has also changed a little.
  • You can now edit <gallery /> tags with a very basic tool. [6]
  • You can now see a help page about keyboard shortcuts in the page menu. [7]
  • When you change categories, you will now see them when you save the page. [8]
  • When you edit templates, you will now see the parameters in the right order. The ones that you must add have a star (*). [9] [10]
  • The page will now be saved faster, thanks to a new way of coding the text that sends 40% less text to the servers. [11]
  • Your wiki can ask to test a new tool to edit TemplateData. [12]

Problems

  • There was a problem with search on the English and German Wikipedias between January 6 and January 14. You could not see new pages and changes in search results. [13]
  • There were "pool timeouts" errors on several wikis on January 13; it was caused by a code change that was made to fix another problem. [14]
  • On January 17, Bugzilla and Wikimedia Labs were broken for about 20 minutes due to network problems. IRC channels with recent changes (irc.wikimedia.org) were broken for about two hours. [15]

Future software changes

Orange bar with new messages
  • If you have removed JavaScript in your web browser, you will soon be able to see the orange bar saying that you have new messages. If you have changed how the bar looks with a gadget, you may need to change the gadget again. [16] [17]
  • You will soon be able to add a given Flickr user to a blacklist so that their files can't be uploaded using UploadWizard on Wikimedia Commons and other wikis. [18]
  • You will see a warning when you try to delete a page included in at least one other page. [19]

Hi Jackmcbarn,

Jim Munchbach here. Lots to learn here on Wikipedia. I'm a newbie and I was just trying to set up a user page (which seemed like a reasonable place to begin the process of learning Wikipedia).

So, should I update my page before it gets deleted? Or, should I let it be deleted, do my research and prepare the content I want to post on Wikipedia, and then come back and post a new user page when I'm ready to post the content?

I'm looking for a training resource in Kindle now. Wiki for Dummies sounds like a good title...

  • Pages from Wikimedia sites now load faster in your browser thanks to "module storage", a way for your browser to save data like JavaScript and CSS on your computer to avoid downloading them again. See video. [24]
  • The code used to show videos has changed. You should be able to play the video on the page, with the play button on top of the video. If you see the play button on the right of the video, or if clicking on the video leads you to the original file, please file a bug or tell User:Bawolff. [25]
  • The Special:ActiveUsers page will be removed because it's too slow. [26]

First, I advise you to change your username, as a company name as a username is a violation of username policy and may cause you to be blocked. Also, since you have a COI, it's recommended that you not try to write the article about your own company (see WP:PSCOI for more about this). If you insist on doing so anyway, you must make sure to use reliable and independent sources in the article. Once you've made these improvements, resubmit it and it will be reviewed again. Well, libel and vandalism seem like two rather different things; either might be a subset of the other or it might not, depending on the context. That article and a related one, now semi'd indefinitely, both suffer from these sorts of edits. I'd certainly call them vandalism, since they seem like deliberate attempts to sabotage the verifiability of the articles, but I don't suppose they're libelous. Anyway, thanks for the quick response. Recent software changes

  • The latest version of MediaWiki (1.23wmf13) was added to test wikis and MediaWiki.org on February 6. It will be added to non-Wikipedia wikis on February 11, and all Wikipedia wikis on February 13 (calendar).
  • The Vector search box was changed to fix old display and accessibility issues; for example, you can now use full-text search even if you have disabled JavaScript.   • You are now notified when someone adds a link to your user page on wikis where it didn't work before (wikis with dates in the year-month-day order, including Hungarian, Japanese, Korean and some variants of Chinese). [53]

Problems

  • On February 3, all wikis were broken for about an hour due to a traffic balancing issue. [59]
  • On February 6, some wikis were broken for about half an hour in total due to a problem with the Math extension.

  • Some methods from Scribunto's mw.message library will be removed after February 18. If you use them in your templates or modules, please check to make sure that things will not break. [60] [61]

Can you please not delete my "Bubzbeauty" page! It has references to articles and proper citations. Also she is notable enough to have a Wikipedia page as she is one of the most subscribed YouTube personalities from the United Kingdom!This page should not be deleted!!! She has been interviewed by multiple online magazines and is notable enough to be on Wikipedia! The page also has proper sources and refrences! Please do not delete!

  • On February 14, all sites were broken for about 15 minutes for users in Southeast Asia, Oceania and the western part of North America. It was due to problems with cache servers.

VisualEditor news

  • The link tool now tells you when you're linking to a disambiguation or redirect page. [83]
  • You can now change image display (like thumbnail, frame and frameless) with VisualEditor. [84]
  • Wikitext warnings will now hide when you remove wikitext from paragraphs you are editing. [85]

Are you doing any sort of search to determine if they meet GNG? I'd argue AfD is much more likely to result in a fully fleshed out article for someone who is actually notable. Which feels like it's more in the spirit of the encyclopedia. Rikster2 (talk) 18:42, 25 February 2014 (UTC)

No problem with good faith PRODs. However, I ask you to reconsider opening AFDs like Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Chris Babb after the PROD was contested on the grounds of WP:GNG and additional sources were added to the article. Opening that AfD with the same PROD reason, failing WP:NBASKETBALL, disregards that WP:GNG can be met by a player even though they may not satisfy WP:NBASKETBALL. At least for cases where GNG is claimed (as it was when I contested the PROD), it would be helpful if the deletion rationale explained why GNG was not met. WP:NSPORTS does say that "Failing to meet the criteria in this guideline means that notability will need to be established in other ways (e.g. the general notability guideline ..."—Bagumba (talk) 20:35, 25 February 2014 (UTC)

  • Yeah, in my experience there is a larger group of editors that check out AfDs than prods. The articles as created probably did not pass the notability guidelines, but they do now, thanks to editor who came across it at AfD. Also, I have voted for keep on several of the AfDs, so its not as if they are completely not notable. WikiProject AFC is holding a month long Backlog Elimination Drive!

Revision of Article on Jesus

The article on Jesus, section entitled "Crucifixion and burial," currently states: "In Matthew 27:62–66, on the following day the Jews ask Pilate for the tomb to be sealed with a stone and placed under guard to ensure the body will remain there." This sentence is completely erroneous. Gospel Matthew 27:60 clearly states that Joseph of Arimethea was responsible for placing the large stone over the entrance to the tomb after the body of Jesus had been prepared.

Matthew27: [60] And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.

The offending sentence under the section entitled "Crucifixion and burial," should be rewritten: "In Matthew 27:62–66, on the following day the chief Jewish priests ask Pilate for the tomb to be secured, and with Pilate's permission the priests place seals on the entrance stone and set a guard."

This serves to bring the statement into conformity with Matthew 27:65–66, which reads:

"[65] Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can. [66] So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch."

Abbreviation field on Template:Infobox_university

Although I am a Wikipedia enthusiast, the policies here still confuse me so much that I end up avoiding complex editions. I have been flirting for a while, however, with the idea of adding an "abbreviation" field to university infoboxes. I have left a message on the talk page for the infobox template but I've got no reply so far. I am contacting you because you were the last person to edit the infobox university page and you seem rather involved. Do you think it's a valid edition? New redirects

You'll recall this discussion when you enabled the software to tag redirects that are left behind when a page is renamed with {{R from move}}. Hypothetical: If there were a Category:Newly created redirects and an rcat named {{R newly created}}, which would populate the category, then is it possible for the software to tag a redirect soon or immediately after it is first created? It would have to be monitored on an equable basis, and yet, I do understand your concern. The category would be like the other redirect maintenance cats, and I would monitor it. Also, it occurs to me that there already exists a Category:Miscellaneous redirects that is populated by the bare (no rcats added) {{This is a redirect}} template. Every redirect I've come across that the {{R from move}} has auto-tagged has needed at least one other rcat, so those moves can now only be reverted by admins. New redirects left behind by moves is one segment of all newly created redirects. This category will be useful to monitor all newly created redirects and to sort them when necessary. The new redirects will be removed from the miscellaneous category after at least one rcat is added to the This is a redirect template. The miscellaneous cat is presently very sparsely used by some editors who are not sure what rcats and cats to use. They tag the redirect with the bare This is a redirect template so a monitor will come by and finish the sorts. When we implement this new procedure, the category will continue with the small purpose of usefulness to unsure editors and also have the larger purpose of maintenance of newly formed redirects. – Paine Ellsworth CLIMAX! 20:57, 9 March 2014 (UTC)

Request for speedy deletion of module

Can an admin delete Module:Location map/data as G7? (CSD tags don't work on module pages). I know it appears to have 50000 transclusions, but these are not "real" and appear only because the job queue is behind. Jackmcbarn (talk) 16:32, 13 March 2014 (UTC)

If neither the module nor the template exists, then it wasn't called properly (and it would have made an ugly mess in the old non-Lua version of the template). What do you want to happen in that case exactly? Jackmcbarn (talk) 20:06, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
My idea is that if it is possible, we should catch errors as many as possible and categorize pages containing those errors, so people can precisely fix them. For example, if Module:Citation/CS1 didn't catch errors, we would see a lot of pages in Category:Pages_with_script_errors, but people would not be able to figure it out easily what problem it is. With Category:CS1_errors:_dates, we can see that pages falling in this category are missing parameter "date." In the same way, if neither the module nor the template exists, it would be nice to have a tracking category for this case.
It is true that this case means the module wasn't called properly, and the goal for doing tracking category is to fix it. Also, since we switched to lua version already, why do we have to care about the old version? --Nullzero (talk) 20:55, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
We don't care about the old version. I was just saying I didn't make the problem any worse. Anyway, rather than making a new category to fix that, I think looking for redlinked transcluded templates would be a better fix. Does thwiki run database reports for those? Sorry that I didn't make it clear. I didn't say that you did something wrong. Rather, I just suggested for an improvement. Since lua can handle errors very easy, compared to using only template and parser functions, it would be nice to do all I mentioned above. Anyway, I don't have any difficulty from fixing those script errors in Thai Wikipedia because there are very few errors. So, if you think that this module is fine enough, it's fine. Technical move of Alaska templates -- two errors

Hello Jack. Can you tell why I would get these errors on doing the move:

The page Template:Location map USA Alaska/sandbox could not be moved to Module:Location map/data/USA Alaska/attribution/sandbox.
The page Template:Location map USA Alaska/testcases could not be moved to Module:Location map/data/USA Alaska/attribution/testcases.

Rationale for removing Lua from Template:Incomplete/doc

I would like to understand why {{Lua}} was removed from the documentation. The first line of {{Incomplete}} contains 

#invoke:Unsubst

which does invoke Lua. However, that was a wrapper around the body of the template that was not converted to Lua. Is that why? How can one tell which invocation is spurious and which is not? Does the entire template have to invoke a complete Lua substitute? Just curious?

Basically, the template needs to be nothing but Lua for the {{lua}} tag to be eligible. Template:Infobox and Template:Edit protected are two good examples. If a template happens to use some Lua, but is mostly other stuff, it doesn't need the {{lua}} tag. Jackmcbarn (talk) 23:41, 16 March 2014 (UTC)
