Thanks. I've put notes on the image pages to that effect, which should cover the requirements for citing sources. Regards, CLW 15:25, 19 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image:LaTeX logo.svg[edit]

Hi. I see you uploaded Image:LaTeX logo.svg. You've stated that it is a copyrighted logo to be used under fair use. Would you mind telling me exactly where it came from (URL) and/or double checking that (as it's from a free software organisation) it's not available under a free licence of some sort? Another user wishes to use it in a template which is dubious at best given the current current copyright notice. Please reply at User_talk:Kingboyk#Quick_question. Thanks. --kingboyk 23:40, 4 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for clarifying things. I'm just going to keep using it unless someone tells me otherwise. Cheers! Isopropyl 00:07, 5 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

... Snip nasty menacing template...

Someone touched the file after your first upload, but I thought you might know the origin of the image. {{GFDL-self}} would be a cool tag to apply here, if you can. Regards, Dethomas 22:04, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

... Snip nasty menacing template #2 ...

Likewise with this image, apparently {{PD-Flag}} is deprecated.

Regards, Dethomas 22:08, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I responded at your talk page. I'm in favor of pd-self being applied to all the flag images, if someone wants to tag them all. --jacobolus (t) 22:28, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Flags of the US[edit]

Hi! Nice work you did on the US flags. I am trying to recreate them in SVG and am actually (almost) finished, but I would like to check whether the specifications I used are alright. I always used E=F and G=H as in The specification of the 50-star flag, but I suppose that if these are marked with different letters they may have been different in other versions. Indeed, some do look slightly different from your designs. Can you give me a tip on the exact specifications? Is there a site I have not looked at?

Some other questions...

  • I always assumed a 1:1.9 ratio. Is it the same for the 15-star? I kept width constant, and added two stripes and increased the height of the Union of one stripe. Is it correct?
  • The "original" star-spangled banner had crooked stars (according to some sites). Is there a spec or was it just sown in a rush?
  • Are there any specifications on the Betsy Ross flag, in particular the circle radius?

Thanks for your patience! --Orzetto 10:37, 15 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks again for making the file available. I will upload to commons as soon as I get some spare time. :-) --Orzetto 11:11, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

File:US 13 Star Flag.svg
13 star flag with wrong colors

Hello, I wanted to let you know I've optimized your image, it is down from 21466 bytes to 11922 bytes now and the colors are exactly the same.

File:US Flag 51stars alternate.png
51 star flag with wrong colors

I used PNGCrusher (a front-end for OptiPNG) for the optimization and DigitalColor Meter for comparison. Eliashc 17:42, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've optimized some more flags, and reverted some that still had the wrong colors... I have no experience with vector graphics though (in fact I don't even have a program for such files). Would be great if you could correct the US 13 Star Flag.svg, which is totally wrong (wrong blue, wrong red); same goes for US_Flag_51stars_alternate.png. Thanks in advance. Hello, I'm a french Mac OS X user. How did you create an SVG file from LaTeX ? Which software package did you use? Is it free or proprietary software? I found pstoedit, however, for SVG export, it needs a plug-in, and I can't find a MacOS X plugin for it. Thanks. --80.11.205.225

Do you know a free software for pdf (or postscript) to SVG with Mac OS X ? Or where can I find help for this? --217.128.59.171

Crummy flag images accusation[edit]

Hi there:

You recently posted this comment on my talk page.

I have responded to this posting on my talk page (albeit a bit more angrily than in this post). However, I would like to make sure that you see it. First of all, it helps if you actually identify which page you are talking about. Nowhere in your posting do you explicitly write that you are discussing changes to the Flag of the United States article. (It is implicit in that you wikilink to its talk page.) This makes it a little difficult to respond. More importantly, however, you are accusing me of an a crime I did not commit. If you look at this diff page, you will see that the person responsible for the changes that you are complaining about is MiLo28, not me.

DLJessup (talk) 12:39, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry! Here's what I posted at your talk page:

Oy! Terribly sorry! I had apparently been looking at the 51st-100th edits, the first many of which were yours, and clicked the "diff with curr" button, and saw that the change had been made since then. Please accept my apologies. Nasty mixup. --jacobolus (t) 17:43, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Catch (Willie Mays)[edit]

Obviously, the article on the 1954 World Series isn't whole (for the curious reader) if there's going to be a seperate section about one particular play in that World Series.TMC1982 3 May 2006 (UTC)

I hardly know anything about saints, and any contributions are incidental (grammar fixes, etc). --jacobolus (t) 12:24, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

48 star US flag - another pattern...[edit]

You have done a great job creating the various star patterns the US flag has gone though in the last 200+ years. However, we might need a variant SVG for the 48 star flag. You see, there were two different star patterns used from 1912-1959. The first pattern had the stars in alternating left and right lines and was used to 1920. The second pattern is the familiar rectangle and was used from 1920-1959. An image of the first pattern is here. FOTW has more information here. - Thanks, Hoshie | Grand Union Flag 20:07, 18 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong coordinate system image[edit]

Hi Jacobolus, i think the image no the left is wrong. the y-axis is in front of the green z-coordinate line. It should be the other way around. As you have created the image, maybe you still have the original file and could easily create a new version? Thanks, --Abdull 08:02, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, user Tau'olunga already made the change. You can check it in the image's history. Bye, --Abdull 08:42, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

48 star flag alignment, part 2[edit]

Hey again,

It looks like you were correct in your last message about the rectangle alignment of the 48-star flag. I dug up a 1917 photo of Jane Addams and Mary McDowell at a WWI peace march. The only version of the 48-star Addams carried with in the march was the rectangle alignment, not the other one; this leads me to now believe that the left-right alternation alignment used between 1913-ca. 1920 was indeed unofficial. See the Addams photo here. Mea Culpa. - Thanks, Hoshie | Don't Tread on Me 08:58, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

51 star flag?[edit]

At some point, someone is liable to nail you for "Original Research", if this flag is indeed your own design. Beyond that, I think it unlikely they would use a pattern that would be "top-heavy", i.e that the last row is shorter than the next-to-last: Image:US flag 51 stars.svg

  • No, not trying to start a fight, just trying to help, since your name was attached to the upload. If this is already a standard-proposed design, "never mind". I only saw your name because I watch the U.S. Flag page. And I forgot the 4 tildes. Normally I do them. Like this. :) Wahkeenah 18:15, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright problems with Image:National mall (east) satellite image 2.jpg[edit]

An image that you uploaded, Image:National mall (east) satellite image 2.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Copyright problems because it is a suspected copyright violation. Please look there if you know that the image is legally usable on Wikipedia (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), and then provide the necessary information there and on its page, if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you.

TextMate[edit]

Hi Jacobulus,

I agree with you on both what you removed and what you kept. About youth: maybe this is because young and immature are often confused. You are right, TextMate is pretty young compared to vi or even BBEdit (but, apart from Emacs and some obscure line editors, what can possibly be old compared to vi ? ;-) ). My gripe was about youth as an excuse and an Apple award should discard such an excuse.

All of this IMHO, of course. And as I said, and I'll say it again, your corrections are very good, I'd like more collaborators to be alike you :-)

By the way, do you know any point-per-point comparison between BBEdit and TextMate? Not litterate stuff, just straight, binary, comparison. Thank you

Thank you for your suggestions. I'll investigate into this once I'll have spare time enough. HAve a nice day.

Harvard restructuring[edit]

Noticed you thought the Harvard article needed restructuring and were thinking using Cornell as a model/comparison. If you'd like, I am currently revamping the Rutgers University article including a comprehensive structure I've almagamated from Cornell, and several other university articles (Michigan State, Princeton, Yale, Stanford, Chicago, Washington and a few others). Each university article has its weaknesses, Cornell too, and that's why I thought looking through many university articles would give me a picture of what a comprehensive article would include. Take a look at the Rutgers piece, it may work for you. Need any help, let me know. —ExplorerCDT 13:35, 20 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • What faults do you have with the Rutgers article structure (I'm always looking for suggestions). —ExplorerCDT 19:32, 21 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Chess template[edit]

Is there a way to numbers on squares in the chess template? For instance, label them 1, 2, 3? I don't know how to do it, but a good way would be that x1 would put a "1" on the square, etc. Can that be done? Bubba73 (talk), 03:50, 29 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You said "If you make some additional graphics for numbers, I don't see why you couldn't use them, however. I say go for it". I have no idea of how to do that. Are there any instructions for doing it? (I really need to have digits on squares for an article.) Bubba73 (talk), 05:20, 29 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
"If you upload an image " I don't even have any idea of how to make an image, so I guess I'm out of it. I'd like to do diagrams with corresponding squares numbered, which is why being able to show single-digit numbers would be good. But adding it to the template is beyond what I can do. Bubba73 (talk), 15:02, 29 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I made files Chess_x1l.png and Chess_x1d.png (I assume for light and dark) and uploaded them to the commons. I wanted to use x1, x2, etc, to be similar to xx and xo. But when I put x1 in a position, it messed up and listed the name of the file. I must be doing something wrong. What is it? Bubba73 (talk), 00:57, 30 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I left the "44" out of the file name. Is that it? Bubba73 (talk), 01:00, 30 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I put the "44" in and uploaded them to WP (not commons), and it works - except that the background is white. I don't know how to match the background color to what is used in the template (I'm using Photoshop Elements 2.0). Bubba73 (talk), 01:16, 30 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've found out how to set the background color in the image file, but I don't know what color to set it to (RGB). Is that information anywhere? Bubba73 (talk), 03:17, 1 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I hit upon the idea of taking the blank square images and adding text to them. I think I'll have it in a couple more hours. Bubba73 (talk), 13:48, 1 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, I noticed you might need some help and went ahead and created those 1-2-3 images for you. I hope you don't mind. :) --ZeroOne 01:24, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, thanks a lot! I've been struggling with it. I think I found a bug in the old Photoshop Elements 2.0 where it won't save the background. I think I would have eventually gotten it, but I really appreciate your help! The reason I want to add them is primarily for showing corresponding squares, and I really need at least through 6, and 8 or 9 would be better. Bubba73 (talk), 01:27, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
All right, I did the rest of them too. Happy chess-diagramming! --ZeroOne 01:49, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Is there some giant wiki-wide purge of fair use images that I wasn't aware of?" Heh. Oh yeah, there's a huge battle going on about this. See User:Chowbok/Robth's RFU Explanation and the links at the bottom; also Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Chowbok. —Chowbok 18:36, 2 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Graphics Lab[edit]

I saw your name listed on Wikiproject Illustration or the list of graphic artists, and I thought I'd let you know that a Graphics Lab has been created on EN. Based on the highly successful French and German graphics labs, it seeks to better organise and coordinate our graphic design and photo-editing efforts. Up until now, there has been no common space on EN where users could ask for maps, charts and other SVG files to be created. What's more, the Graphics Lab has discussion boards, tips, tools and links; in sum, a good common workspace. Come help us out! The infrastucture is already in place, and now we need participants. :) --Zantastik talk 02:10, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
