Ok so right after i made the category of the New York Press specifically september 4,1898 i realized that it was not an appropriate catagory so i changed it to just the New York Press 1898. The original article that I cited is not available online, but it does exist i saw it on microfilm while working in the New York Public Library . Anyway when I added the category New York Press 1898 i tagged the wikipedia page New York Press (historical) to the category because that is the Publication I was referring too. Then on the New York Press (historical) page I noted that individual editions of the paper can be found on microfilm at the New York Public Library. Request reason:

it was literally my first edit. I am still in the process of learning how wikipedia works. I made a category for the New York Press 1898. I dont see how that in any way appears malicious. I was just trying to properly add information to the page. Once you told me not to do it again i didnt but someone was malicious in submitting me to be blocked. On the bottom of this page there is a note that says please be kind, we are all humans , but that was a pretty mean thing to do to me 😡

Accept reason:

I am offering you a second chance. But, please, before you do something, read the corresponding manual carefully. If you want to cite sources, i.e. create references to sources, read WP:REFERENCING. If you want to create new article, read Help:Editing and WP:NOTABILITY, and so on. You have links to all the help pages at the top of this page in the "Welcome" box. Be sure to read it and understand. If you don't understand somenthing, you can ask me on my talk page. Vanjagenije (talk) 09:59, 4 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I think you'll have to tell us what you intended to achieve, and how you intend to contribute if unblocked. Huon (talk) 02:21, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Ok then. I made a minor edit to the wikipedia page on Christian Rath. I volunteer at the New York Public Library and i am working on my MS LIS at Queens College. Recently i read an article in an issue of the New York Press on September 4, 1898.The article was entitled "Hangman of President Lincolns Assassins Tell His Story" I added on the Wikipedia page that Col. Rath made the hoods from a tent in the arsenal warehouse. I wanted to appropriately add the reference and citation. The article was not online so in order to cite it properly on wikipedia i realized it had to go into a category. I could not find one for New York Press so I made a new one. I did not think it would be a problem and the reference and citation now fell perfectly into place. The next day I received a notice that my category was going to be deleted. I didnt argue but i explained my steps and accepted to correction. I didnt think it was fair to ban me from making edits. I am relatively new to this and i am just trying to learn. I was planning on adding a photo of Christian Rath to the page and i was trying to figure out the copyright restrictions. I am using this page to practice. If i make a mistake i would definately fix it. I am just trying to improve the page and make it the best page ever. I am sorry about the category mistake i will try not to make any more mistakes. But thats what it was, a mistake. Jamie.discala (talk) 02:46, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

This seems to be a misunderstanding about the purpose of categories and about how to cite print sources. Categories have nothing to do with references; they are a tool to group Wikipedia articles on related topics. For example, Christian Rath is in Category:1831 births because that's when Rath was born, and in Category:American executioners because that's one of the main things he's known for, and so on.
Print sources should be cited in footnotes just like all other sources; give enough bibliographical information to allow others to look up the source in a library archive. Like this fictive example[1] - if it weren't made up, you'd know exactly what to ask a librarian for. See WP:Referencing for beginners on how to easily create nicely-formatted footnotes for various kinds of references, including (print) newspaper articles.
On a more general note, if you're unsure about how to do something, it's a good idea not to just try something but to ask for help - the help desk or the Teahouse are good places to ask others.
Bbb23, to me this doesn't look like a "not here" case but like some good-faith mistakes. Would you objection to an unblock? Huon (talk) 17:12, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I assure you my intensions were honest. I use wikipedia a lot and I just started working on my Masters in Library Science, most likely thats why i did not have a clear understanding of how wiki categories work. i understand better about categories now I will ask for help. Someone mentioned using a sandbox .

Another question I have is does that mean if I am unblocked that I cant fix my edit and put it back, but with the proper category. I am a little nervous about it because ,i dont want to get blocked again. But i want to keep improving. I dont want to move to other pages or create my own pages until i have mastered the process. I do want to contribute to the encyclopedia😐 Jamie.discala (talk) 17:34, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Now I'm somewhat concerned. I just spent some time writing an explanation of how categories aren't what you're looking for, what categories are meant for, and how you should cite print sources, with example and link to the relevant help page. And your reply is that you still want to put your edit back "with the proper category"? Did you read my explanation? Was anything unclear? Why would you want to use categories here? Huon (talk) 17:42, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict) I still don't have a good understanding of what the user wants to accomplish here, not just in the short term, but overall. All I saw was disruption, and his explanations don't ring right for me. What "pages" does he want to create?--Bbb23 (talk) 17:57, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I did read your explanation but i did not read the link you attached yet because i was not going to make any changes until i went through all the readings and practiced the edit the proper way. I thought that the category was the main issue because i got two messages about deleting it. I did not understand so much that there was a problem with the footnote also , i looked in the edit section when i made the original footnote at how the other footnotes were placed and i did it that way but my cote is not available online i found the article on microfilm in the library. The article exists i didnt just make it up I have a copy of it as well as the front page of the paper if you want to see it. 😰 Jamie.discala (talk) 17:55, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I meant to write my cite was not online. Jamie.discala (talk) 17:56, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Bbb23 I want to contribute to Wikipedia in a positive way. I have many interests and passions that I pursue. I am a person that always learns. I did not have a page in particular that I wanted to create and certainly I was not planning on doing that today. That is something that is obviously very time consuming. But if some day i saw the need for a page on a subject i would want to participate in its foundation and make a contribution to the encyclopedia. Is that not what wikipedia is all about? Yes I made a mistake but i did not put something on the page that was not true. The same fact is also mentioned in McClures magazine vol 37 1911 "The Fate of the Lincoln Conspirators by John A Gray" (Hathitrust) https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015030656097;view=1up;seq=649;skin=mobile

I was just asking some additional clarifying questions and I feel like i am being attacked 😰

Jamie.discala (talk) 18:16, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It was page 626 in McClures magazine Jamie.discala (talk) 18:17, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I heard you thanked me for the SD. It'll be alright. Before I joined, I spent time reading the rules and seeing Wikipedians be Wikipedians, so maybe it would be a great idea to spend this time to look at WP's policies before you can consider returning to WP. FoxyGrampa75 (talk) 01:25, 16 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I am blocked now anyway. It was literally my first edit. I watched that little video before I started then i saw that page asked for additional information. I had some information so i added it and i was trying to make my citation fit. If they told me not to do that i would have just set everything the way it originally was and read the instructions on making an edit... i didnt even know there was instructions. I had such good intentions when i started and now i am kind of discouraged. But thanks for your note Grandpa. Have a great week 🙂 Jamie.discala (talk) 02:34, 16 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Vanjagenije for unblocking me. I will be sure to study the rules carefully and ask questions prior to my next edit. I appreciate the second chance. Jamie.discala (talk) 19:29, 10 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
