User page[edit]

I am delighted that you like what I have done with my user page, and that you have suggested the style to another Wikipedian. I created the style after my user page was vandalized twice, in an attempt to prevent future vandalism. Figaro 07:31, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

G'day?[edit]

Thanks for the message. Hopefully they'll take the hint now! Yes that is my talk page. I barely use it though. That's still my welcome message from 6 months ago sitting up the top. Cheers. --Alexxx1 08:48, 14 December 2005 (UTC) I'm not an admin so I can't block. I'm going out now, but I reckon if there's one more edit by this spammer, you can post the IP on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrator_intervention_against_vandalism. That would pretty much do the job. --Alexxx1 09:29, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Re: G'day[edit]

Seems to be fine now. There are specific warning templates for spam links that escalate in severity as the test templates do. See {{TestTemplates}} for a list of all warning templates. If you spot somebody continuing to vandalise, despite warnings, list them at Vandalism in Progress if you can't find admin's about. Other admins who watch that page should attend to it. Happy editing, --cj | talk 15:06, 14 December 2005 (UTC) the intervention link given by Alex above is great, too[reply]

Re: Civil Disturbances - Western Australia[edit]

Sorry, I couldn't find the article. I didn't realise that it was literally Civil Disturbances - Western Australia. I have added it to Category:History of Western Australia and moved it to Civil disturbances in Western Australia which is more in line with Wikipedia:Naming conventions.

Interesting article, and definitely worth fleshing out. I wouldn't have a clue how complete it is, but most of the disturbances I could think of off the top of my head (the "night of the stones", the 1834 Kalgoorlie race riot, the Freo lumpers' strike of 1919, the Freo Prison riot) were there. Forrest went to Kal and got caught up in a storm in a teacup that some people called a riot; I don't know if that is on the list. And there was of course an alleged riot on the South Perth foreshore during the 2003 Skyshow. How about the Geraldon Riot of 1988? And there were riots on Rotto during schoolies week about ten years ago I think - I have a clear memory of seeing footage of schoolies singing "put another bike on the fire" as they fed their bonfire with Rotto hire bikes. How about the 2002 riot at the Port Hedland Detention Centre? Oops, sorry, I'm getting a bit carried away.

Another point is the difficulty of determining what counts as a civil disturbance. I should say that "Australian troops storm Chinese ship" oughtn't count as "civil". When the Noongars waged war in the centre of Perth in the 1830s, was that a civil disturbance? Does a single person driving a tank through the city count as a civil disturbance?

Snottygobble | Talk 02:32, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • Welcome. One more: the "Treasury Riot" of 1931. I get things wrong when I do them off the top of my head. I wouldn't be prepared to add the above until I had done a certain amount of research that I'm not prepared to do just at the moment. Snottygobble | Talk 02:41, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
As Drew said: definitely worth fleshing out. I reworded the opening a bit and will give it some thought, but I'm a bit bogged down with other things at the moment (least of all trying to do some paid work so I can have a Christmas break!) Regards -- Iantalk 03:28, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Crime in perth v Crime in WA[edit]

I think I created Crime in Perth and called it that to be consistent with the others: Crime in Sydney and Crime in Melbourne. I'm not really comfortable with the current name and wouldn't argue with a change to Crime in Western Australia (I notice now that there's a Crime in the Northern Territory which would support that change). -- Iantalk 03:53, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

And a great Christmas to you also. I won't comment on the other matter before next Monday ;-) -- Iantalk 05:42, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

That user page[edit]

The user mentioned has a page that would be more complicated for a vandal to wreck. Thank you for letting me know. Interesting how I found it there being no Wikipedia link, I typed it into the browser and there is an open link to it. Evidently Wikipedia links our user pages and talk pages as well as articles[1],[2]' [3].--Dakota t e 07:31, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Eastern Railway[edit]

welcome back vcxlor, seems I may have placed that update in the wrong article. Can you confirm that the Eastern Railway is Perth to Northam, with the EGR the current Northam to Kal ?? If so I'll fix it up. cheers Nachoman-au 14:23, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Rollback[edit]

Cripes, I do hope doing all those reverts didnt take too much of your time!! If it was simply a case of any user doing it, should've left it to me as the trail was clear from his contrib page vcxlor 01:32, 16 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • That's the beauty of the admin tools. Each entry on the contributions page had a rollback button next to it. It took me maybe 45 seconds to click them all. Snottygobble | Talk 02:36, 16 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Xmas[edit]

Merry Christmas to you too! But that article still needs some categories to be put in. - Darwinek 14:00, 16 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Nullarbor[edit]

Yes ... I was quite surprised about that. I guess it's a job that few companies would want to do because it can't be profitable, what with the large distances covered and the high fuel prices out there: I remember hearing that Eucla was selling fuel at $1.23 back in 2000! Perhaps an article on Greyhound Australia is needed, or at least something better than the one sentence mention it gets in Greyhound Lines.

Have a very good christmas as well. Graham/pianoman87 talk 14:24, 16 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Userboxes[edit]

Hi, thanks for the info. I also noticed that on your userpage, you have a Western Australian userbox. I dont know about you, but i couldnt stand that it was larger than others. I made mine smaller, just thought you would find this helpful, but then again, you might want your to be bigger to show how proud you are. :) --Ali K 02:57, 17 December 2005 (UTC) When you say put colours in the right hand boxes, do you mean like in one of these userboxes?--Ali K 04:26, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You too! Nice to see someone giving attention to the lost railways of Tasmania - I'll be interested to read what you come up with. :) Ambi 15:03, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Reply to welcome as well[edit]

Thought I'd put this here as well, my reply to your question on my talk page:

  • Not sure which were your redirects, I fixed a load in one go. It might not have been your fault if your re-direct originally went Article A > B , and someone else moved B to C but didn't change A. Or maybe just need to copy and paste the title of the article the re-direct is pointing to so it's spelt exactly the same. Anyway glad to help. --Petros471 15:29, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Residential Developments Busselton[edit]

thanks for the input, i realised when i first wrote it that adding the developers might stir someone up. Hopefully no one wants to make an issue out of it, i guess ill start preparing responces.hossens27 06:05, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Im propably not ready for it but how bad can it get(wishfull thinking). Your right about the greed, those developers have been holding that land for a decade just waiting for high land prices -greedy bastards. I guess its good for the town. hossens27 06:35, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Userboxes[edit]

I'm glad you like {{tlu|User:Feureau/UserBox/ubx-5. I'm flattered that you want me to make more, but I think userboxes are really getting out of control. Some users really do "communicate only via userboxes." Also, silly userboxes are leading to the creation of unneccessary categories, and they are wasting server resources. Most users do not substitute specific userbox templates. And when they do, they usually still transclude the the {{userbox}} template. Of course, one transclusion does not significantly affect the servers, but dozens of userbox templates on each of thousands of user pages can cause a considerable problem during periods of server strain. I think you user page looks better without userboxes. I'm going to delete mine, too. --TantalumTelluride 19:55, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Forrest[edit]

I don't really understand your question. My view is that since Forrest never legally became a peer he should be refered to as Sir John Forrest not Lord Forrest, if that's what you're asking. Adam 08:34, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure I understand either. The page was never at Sir John Forrest. It was at John Forrest, 1st Baron Forrest of Bunbury. Someone pointed out that he was never officially created a baron, so the page title was inaccurate and the page should be moved. I initially disagreed, but then came around, and took the opportunity to move the page to John Forrest. Surely you would agree that John Forrest is a better title than John Forrest, 1st Baron Forrest of Bunbury?

I had to fix a lot of links from other pages. it was a long, boring job, and it is likely that I made the odd error. I wonder if you've seen me unintentionally drop the word "Sir" from a link or two, and assumed that I was doing so on purpose?

Snottygobble | Talk 12:50, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, Wikipedia:Naming conventions (names and titles) states
Titles of Knighthood such as Sir and Dame should not be included in the article title: use personal name instead, e.g., Arthur Conan Doyle not Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
so moving to Sir John Forrest didn't even cross my mind as an option. I suppose we could debate the merits of breaching the guideline in this case, but there ain't no way I'm updating all those pages again, so I guess there would be no point. I'm not sure how active I'll be on the 'pedia over the next few days, so if I don't talk to you again, have a merry Christmas, okay? Snottygobble | Talk 13:14, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Three things:

  1. You may want to move that page to User:Vxclor/Userbox Mania. I'd fix it for you but I want to evade unnecesary conflict :)
  2. The #42 userbox of you caught my attention, I have a slighly better version on my userpage :)
  3. Thank you for using my userbox designs :)

--Cool CatTalk|@ 20:24, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Good lord, man. I can clean that page up for you if you like. I'm very adamant about proper userbox layout procedure. Thank you for those extra userboxes; I enjoyed them thoroughly and will be saving them for posterity; however, they're not on my page right now; it's messy enough as it is. ^_^ Cernen 08:38, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well I have no intention of keeping up withthe rapid change in good ole goldfishbowland (can you imagine the wat yahhiccup and growgle will be coping with the increased userpage mayhem with urrser boxes) the extent to which yr hnorable self & others (& I while in it) will in all probability (I had no intention of making a link to adam's book as I am throughly disbelieving of his explanations of 42) create a user box problem (cermen had 70+ lastcont)which will require surgery or limits - and the extent that one can constantly steal from other users, the userbox 5+ will be redundant I will guess by new year 2006 with some lovely wikipedia usia hiting 100+) viz my own boxes referring to it as mania/compulsive obsessive disorder. There are serious issues mind you, and I would guess that by the 12day of chrsmaass moves will be afooot to do somthing aboutit. Best Wishes, enjoy it while it lasssts.vcxlor 01:05, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

EGADS! You're insane! I thought you had deleted your userboxes. But, alas, you've created a separate user subpage for them. Userboxes are EVIL! Seriously, though, the page looks awful in my browser. You might want to work on the layout. --TantalumTelluride 19:46, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Of course it's creating more work. :) But seriouly, these articles need to be categorized, so just tag them when you encounter them. That's what the tag is for. Btw, If you know what category the article should be (without searching), you can do it yourself and just tag the article with wfy or cleanup, if needed of course. Best wishes to you too! Help Stamp Out Silly Acronyms (HSOSA)[edit]

Thanks for the message but I have no idea what "AFD" is. These acronyms can be ambiguous or worse. On the Web I find:

"AFD address list management systems use Electoral Roll, Royal Mail Postcode Address File and commercial databases to provide quick address entry, ..."

or, if you prefer,

"AFD (index.html) AFD (Automatic File Distributor). [image showing some of the dialogs of AFD]. What is AFD? Description · Download · History · FAQ's ..."

etc.

Please describe properly. Funniest one I ran into:

"OBE" - it was used for "Overcome by Events" - i.e. issue is dead because decision to be made is vitiated by later events. For example, if one was deciding whether to disperse the fleet at Pearl Harbor for less targetability (say in Fall 1941) - well after Dec 7, 1941 the matter was "OBE"

I liked this acronym so much I had many chuckles over it with friends, until someone told me it is also for "Out of Body Experience." Carrionluggage 04:24, 31 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'm suprised you're reverting but not dropping into the user's talk page any warning, or am I too quick?? vcxlor 06:31, 31 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I left a warning on User:Swweber before I even removed most of them, to try to stop him in case he wsa making more. He started off on an IP address, and moved to a registered account, so I didn't bother to warn the IP. DreamGuy 06:47, 31 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It's 12:20 p.m. (noon) here, so I figure you're already in 2006 over there in the Antipodes. :) As you probably now, it must be very difficult to trace anything from the 1920-1930s in Buenos Aires.
