May 22, 7pm: WikiWednesday Salon and Skill-Share NYC

You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for our monthly "WikiWednesday" evening salon (7-9pm) and knowledge-sharing workshop at Metropolitan New York Library Council in Midtown Manhattan. Is there a project you'd like to share? A question you'd like answered? A Wiki* skill you'd like to learn? Let us know by adding it to the agenda.

Featuring this month a presentation by Interference Archive guests, and a group discussion on the role of activist archives and building wiki content based on ephemeral publications and oral histories.

To close off the night, we'll also have Wikidojo - a group collaborative writing activity / vaudeville!

We will also follow up on plans for recent and upcoming edit-a-thons, museum and library projects, education initiatives, and other outreach activities.

7:00pm - 9:00 pm at Metropolitan New York Library Council (8th floor) at 599 11th Avenue, Manhattan
(note this month we will be meeting in Midtown Manhattan, not at Babycastles)

We especially encourage folks to add your 5-minute lightning talks to our roster, and otherwise join in the "open space" experience! Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! --Wikimedia New York City Team 17:10, 16 May 2019 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.18

Hello Jeff G./Archives/2019,

WMF at work on NPP Improvements

Niharika Kohli, a product manager for the growth team, announced that work is underway in implementing improvements to New Page Patrol as part of the 2019 Community Wishlist and suggests all who are interested watch the project page on meta. Two requested improvements have already been completed. These are:

  • Allow filtering by no citations in page curation
  • Not having CSD and PRODs automatically marked as reviewed, reflecting current consensus among reviewers and current Twinkle functionality.
Reliable Sources for NPP

Rosguill has been compiling a list of reliable sources across countries and industries that can be used by new page patrollers to help judge whether an article topic is notable or not. At this point further discussion is needed about if and how this list should be used. Please consider joining the discussion about how this potentially valuable resource should be developed and used.

Backlog drive coming soon

Look for information on the an upcoming backlog drive in our next newsletter. If you'd like to help plan this drive, join in the discussion on the New Page Patrol talk page.

Hi Jeff;

This is Terrance, the founder of Zmartmanager. my logo has been disallowed and wiki page has been deleted.

Is there any specific reason please?

Thanks Terrance — Preceding unsigned comment added by ZmartManager (talkcontribs) 23:28, 18 May 2019 (UTC)

Conflict of Interest

Hey Jeff,

Totally open and respectful of Wikipedia's policies and guidelines and appreciate you reaching out. Please let me know if anything I have done signals a policy violation or advertising, etc. I read the guideline and cross-checked with other pages to make sure everything I did followed the exact same format as all other related pages including the classification of creative work, etc. I am only doing generic updates that are cross-referenced and in the same format as all other wikipedia pages. Please continue to inform me if you see anything incorrectly added.

Best,

Gradyabenson (talk) 00:04, 29 May 2019 (UTC)

@Gradyabenson: I don't see a disclosure on your userpage or Talk:Howard Benson yet. Please review all the links I sent, especially WP:DISCLOSE.   — Jeff G. ツ 12:05, 29 May 2019 (UTC)

Statue by a living artist, Roberta Weir. There no FOP for sculpture in the US. Moreover, the origin of the photograph is unclear (maybe a scan of a book). BrightRaven (talk) 11:24, 8 May 2014 (UTC)

Hello to the vigilant BrightRaven. The photo in question is a file photo made after the casting, before installation at Mills College to commemorate a student strike. I was present and helped at the installation. Photo is courtesy of the artist; she is now in her seventies and I felt it necessary to elucidate some of her cultural contributions and didn't think that a photograph of a public statue would be a problem. I could go back to the site and take a photo in situ, or not use the image at all; not really a problem. The link that you show here to Roberta Weir's website doesn't reference the sculpture, it is not a link to the Power of Woman sculpture. Her color version (1970) of the Flammerion engraving of 1888 spawned the wide variety of treatments that have followed it (even the labels on a line of doggie treats...); a point of historical and cultural significance, not intended as a promotion of the artist's work. It is difficult to illustrate an artist's life without pictures of their work; I chose pieces that were already widely known or on public view.P.g.duffy (talk) 21:21, 9 May 2014 (UTC)pgd

I shouldn't have uploaded the self-portrait; I simply did not know how to delete files once they were uploaded. I'm new at this and I want to do things properly. Just trying to be of service; I can use y'all's help. pgdP.g.duffy (talk) 21:33, 9 May 2014 (UTC)

Hello. This image is a derivative work a non free work of art (the sculpture). Therefore, you need a permission from the sculptor. A permission of the photographer is also required. Both permissions should be given through OTRS. Best regards, BrightRaven (talk) 08:09, 10 May 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pgavinduffy (talkcontribs) 16:16, 30 May 2019 (UTC)
@P.g.duffy and Pgavinduffy: It took me a while, but I found that this was about c:Commons:Deletion requests/File:"Power of Woman".jpg, plus the conversation near the top of c:User talk:P.g.duffy, in which you wrote "{{help me}} I need help uploading a photo to an article in pre-publication (under review). Am I in the right place?". Please be more specific. What photo did you want to upload? What article did you want to use it in? I'm sorry for the delays, that page just showed up in c:Category:User needing help today and you didn't sign your posts. Why do you have multiple accounts?   — Jeff G. ツ 17:32, 30 May 2019 (UTC)

This is a really difficult format for a q&a...I am completely lost again...I wanted to submit an article on Roberta Weir, a living artist (of my acquaintance, which seems to make this more difficult) I tried to upload a photo of her public sculpture, "The Power of Woman", which is installed at her alma mater Mills College in Oakland, CA. five years ago That was challenged by Bright Raven. I don't know if the article exists anymore Oh, and I have a vague idea why I have two accts...couldn't log into the old one somehow, so I created a new one...again, that was a while ago. Always a newbie... Pgavinduffy (talk)pgavinduffy (izzat the right way to sign?) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pgavinduffy (talkcontribs) 18:42, 30 May 2019 (UTC)

@Pgavinduffy: You may not post photos of sculptures in the US unless their copyrights have expired or you have sculptor permission because commercial use of such photos is forbidden by US copyright law. Please have the sculptor and photographer post c:COM:L compliant permission for that picture of her sculpture on their website or social media presence or send the image and permission via c:OTRS with a carbon copy to you. Your signature should be exactly four tildes, please see WP:SIG. Also, please reply in this section with your name on it.   — Jeff G. ツ 09:34, 31 May 2019 (UTC)
