Young violinist

Hey, Jeffrey, thanks for your response. It's always good to know I've been heard. :)

You mentioned that studying violin is something the school is requiring. I won't go into a long rant about how life without music is a mistake, and how the fiddle/violin is a handily portable instrument with a flexible adaptable voice, how playing skill will open doors to all kinds of worthwhile activity, and all that... Is he looking forward to learning to play? Does he really want to do this? I am on close terms with a violin teacher, and have heard a lot about kids who are taking lessons because someone else wants them to.

One way to get a head start is by listening. What kind of music does he enjoy? What do you like to listen to? What gets your toes tapping? YouTube is a fantastic place to find all sorts of stuff. Singing along in tune, or whistling, or humming, is the kind of head start that any teacher will appreciate. Old-school music training often started with solfège, the "Doe, a deer" song from that Julie Andrews film being an example of that. I happen to be a fan of Alasdair Fraser's duet albums with Natalie Haas, as well as Shetland fiddler Aly Bain. He has done a lot of playing for the BBC Transatlantic Sessions: [1] [2] and on and on. Gilles Apap working through his own cadenza for a Mozart concerto is a fun tour of some of the different things a violin can do, worth sitting through all eight and a half minutes of it. There is so much out there, and it's hard to tell what any particular person might like. If the Disney tunes float a kid's boat, there is nothing wrong with that. Some of my wife's students are playing pieces from the Harry Potter movie sound tracks.

Whatever method the school uses, most likely it will start out with simple tunes and folk melodies, something reasonably easy for the kids to wrap their ears and fingers around. For example, the Suzuki method famously starts out with "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star." Whatever you listen to, if he sings along with it, so much the better. __ Just plain Bill (talk) 18:04, 14 June 2012 (UTC)
