HHGG[edit]

You've added a link to the inexistent article about your upcoming website. You shouldn't have done that, because:

  1. Do not add references unless something is done.
  2. Your site should only be included as an article if it was REALLY important and relevant.
  3. You shouldn't make it an external link either, for the above reasons.
  4. Wikipedia is NOT a web guide. Don't promote your websites here

Kieff, thanks for being so vigilant, however you are in error about some things:
  • The Index is not my website, nor is it created by me.
  • It is a very useful tool for fans of HHGttG, and quite relevant to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy page.
  • I have recieved permission from the author for it to be under GFDL, thereby ready for the Wikipedia.
  • Having the Index on Wikipedia will allow it to be updated, it will allow editors to add new entries, and it will allow editors with different editions of the book to add information about their edition to the index.
That is why I felt that it would be both encyclopedic, and generally useful.
Regarding creating a reference before creating the page, I had understood that I should create the reference first, rather than creating an orphaned page, and then linking it to related pages. If I misunderstood, I am sorry.
Finally, Kieff, please sign your comments on talk pages, especially if you are telling someone off.
Sorry about the signature, guess I forgot. About the page, if you really think it's a REALLY relevant link, you can add it, but it'll be verified later (and someone will probably come up with the same thing I did). But if it's like that, we should probably include MJ Simpson's Planet Magrathea site on the external links. Kieff | Talk 05:59, Oct 2, 2004 (UTC)
Since I'm waiting for a final conformation regarding GFDL status for the Index, I added it as an External Link in the meantime. I also added Planet Magrathea, as you suggested. ;-) What did you mean "verified later (and someone will probably come up with the same thing I did)"? I'm sure other editors will look at the changes and some may fall into the same misunderstandings as you did, but, AFAIK there is no "verification", just many eyes. Thanks again for your vigilance. JesseW 06:17, 2 Oct 2004 (UTC)
When webpages are linked to in Wikipedia, people usually check how relevant it is (using Google or Alexa ranks and such), and see if the addition of it in Wikipedia is or is not needed~, or if it is some sort of self promotion and etc. Kieff | Talk 06:43, Oct 2, 2004 (UTC)
I see. Thanks! I didn't know about that before. JesseW 06:47, 2 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Housekeeping medal[edit]

Hi, Jesse. I gave you a WikiMedal for Janitorial Services. Maurreen 03:01, 28 Nov 2004 (UTC)

You're welcome! You deserve it. Maurreen 05:09, 1 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Wikipedia namespace[edit]

Thank you for your kind words. Cleaning neglected areas of the Wikipedia (like this one) produces a satisfaction not unlike that of cleaning a very dirty room. You can see a big difference after you've finished, and thus feel you've accomplished something. I guess that's why I'm doing it. 8) -- Beland 01:57, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

California Certified Organic Farmers on DYK[edit]

Updated DYK query Did you know? has been updated. A fact from the article California Certified Organic Farmers, which you recently created, has been featured in that section on the Main Page. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently-created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

doNextItem() in monobook.js not working in Opera[edit]

Hi JesseW.... Just wanted to let you know, in case you didn't already, that the latest version of your monobook.js (dated 20:11, 1 August 2005) doesn't seem to work in Opera — that is, unless I'm doing something wrong, which won't be the first time :) . I'm using the latest version, Opera 8.02 for Windows, en-US. Everything works fine in Firefox & IE, though.

I think the problem's somewhere in doNextItem(). I was able to get it to work if I commented it out & any references to it. I don't know enough javascript to nail it down any further, though (which is why I'm trying to use your monobook.js instead of writing my own :) ). Here's the exact error message that's showing up on my javascript console:

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Gsp/monobook.js&action=submit
Event thread: BeforeScript
Syntax error while loading: line 5 of inline script at http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Gsp/monobook.js&action=submit :
ocation=oldone+"&basepage="+escape(baseul)}; if (/basepage=/
---------------------------------------------------^

It stops there, and nothing else from monoscript.js works. I made sure all my javascript settings were on in Opera, but the error keeps showing up. I have heard, though, that Opera is more strict at parsing javascript code than other browsers :( .

If you happen to have any spare time to fix it, that'd be great. And if you need any more details, let me know. Thanks! -- Gsp 09:36, 2 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again, JesseW. Sorry, I don't use IRC. I did try your suggestion, but I got the same error. :( -- Gsp 21:06, 2 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Why...[edit]

...Thank you! A Reedie! I don't think I've ever met one on Wikipedia before now. And what's this "ex" stuff? Not anything serious is it? Perhaps we'll meet this year :) Nice to be noticed (as long as I wasn't doing something stupid), so it was kind of you to leave a note. I guess I want people to get this user-page-off-limits taboo out of their systems, I mean it's a wiki, right? So what was I gonna... hey! how did you just leave me a message when I was in the middle of writing you? Anyway... funnily enough Image:San_Francisco_Bay_Area_Skyline_Blvd.jpg was my computer wallpaper, reminds me of home. Well, thanks, and oh no, Daily Show's on already. (Oh yeah, pg. 160 and counting of the Iliad- er, little behind :) Dmcdevit·t 06:04, August 11, 2005 (UTC)

Page vandalism[edit]

You're welcome. Oh, don't worry about me having a problem with taking cr*p, I've just come back from a loooooooooooooong Wikivacation, so I'm pretty upbeat right now.  :) Zoe 20:13, August 12, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the list[edit]

I'm surprised by its small size and the general high quality. I have used it to identify three articles for deletion though. lots of issues | leave me a message 21:01, 16 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Admin?[edit]

Greetings! You always pop up on my watchlist doing helpful admin-type things, but as I recall you're not an admin. Would you be interested? (If so, do you have any terrible dirty laundry a potential nominator ought to know about? I didn't find any myself. :-)) Mindspillage (spill yours?) 01:50, 25 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'd be honnored. I've been irritated by not being able to fix the backlog on WP:CP. As for dirty laundry, I don't think so. My basic principle on the wiki is pretty strong eventualism - i.e. I avoide controversial topics 98% of the time. Thanks very much for thinking of me. JesseW 02:00, 25 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good; I'll go write up a nomination, then. :-) Mindspillage (spill yours?) 03:02, 25 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Response to your reply of my question[edit]

I thought I would bring this here, saves people reading a whole essay. I answer your question by saying "the smarter the person, the more questions they ask". Its always been a good guage as far as I can tell. Second, I appreciate when people take the trouble to find out what the correct answer is. There are a few admins who are extremely liberal with their right to act somewhat arbitrarily. Lastly, I am extremely satisfied with your responses, and I plan to include this part, at least, to the dialogue we have engaged in over at the RfA page. I think you'll do a good job as an admin. And for the record, I have no "political" agenda to push concerning inclusionism, deletionism, whatever. I just want to see WP become a better source of information. More complete, but without becoming cluttered with nonsense. As I have been saying on these RfA pages recently, an administrators first duty is to the Wikipedia, and secondarily, to the community itself. Good luck with your bid. I plan to support your nomination. Thanks for prodding me a bit too, it shows your not afraid to confront a situation with intelligence and resolution. Hamster Sandwich 00:57, 26 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • Congratulating you on your successful promotion. Good luck with the mop and bucket. See you 'round the wiki! Hamster Sandwich 18:30, 31 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sysop rights[edit]

Congratulations on your adminship. If you need and help or advice, don't hesitate to ask me, or any of the other Admins and Bureaucrates. Uncle Ed 17:52, August 31, 2005 (UTC)

Gee whizz[edit]

...what a crazy redirect you came up with just then. Have a Working Man's Barnstar as it appears you do this quite often:

Take care, Molotov (talk) 20:56, 15 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well, thank you. Just trying to prevent further deletions of that title. I do do lots of maintance and cleanup work. JesseW, the juggling janitor 21:13, 15 September 2005 (UTC)

Thanks[edit]

Thanks for the barnstar :) Looks like the backlog at WP:CP is really starting to go down --Duk 21:38, 15 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks[edit]

Hi Jesse, and thanks for the barnstar -- it is very much appreciated. I'm sorry that I don't have time just at the moment to give much attention to Wikipedia in general and WP:CP in particular. Having a job sucks. :) --Ngb ?!? 22:43, 16 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Lakewood Blvd. Or one of them...[edit]

Hey, glad to provide a little amusement since it's often pretty hard to come by in AFD. I was actually taken aback by Moncrief's challenge. It never occurred to me that there might be only one Lakewood Blvd. and I had forgotten about the one in my home town. Quale 01:33, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

View diff since your last change[edit]

Hi, I tried your view diff since your last change bookmarklet listed at WP:Tools, but I couldn't get it to work. Right now it's just showing me the diff of the last change made to the page. I seem to remember reading somewhere that in the conversion to 1.5 that they slightly changed the formatting of the history page, and I'm thinking that might have something to do with it. It could be that it's working for you and I've just been using it wrong. Let me know. Thanks! -- Norvy (talk) 05:48, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Johnny Woo[edit]

Hiya - you've changed the Johnny Woo page into a redirect for the Judge Dredd Megazine and called it a "merge". However, none of the material has been merged into the other article. Also, Johnny Woo, as a separate character to Judge Dredd, is notable enough for a separate article (for all that the one that was there was too stubby - I kept meaning to deal with it). All in all, this looks like a deletion by any other name. Am i missing something? Cheers, Vizjim 12:35, 21 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the nice comments. I've reverted the article. Keep up the good work! Vizjim 19:51, 21 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstar[edit]

Hey Jesse. It has come to my attention that you're an awesome User. So have this.—encephalon 09:27, 30 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Florist[edit]

Jesse, I created a bunch of stubs, Floral design, Floristry and Floristics after I noticed that some <stricken out> experts turned them into redirects to ikebana. Only after that I noticed your excellent essay "Florist". However I cannot help but notice that the proper title to the text of "Florist" would be "Floristry". I trust you to finish the job: AFAIK, the "-stry" article must have an emphasis on the craft, while the "-st" article on the skills, if you know what I mean.

If you have things better to do, you may want to simply merge florist and floristry; I will not mind. mikka (t) 05:00, 4 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the compliment! I thought it(the essay at Florist) was probably under the wrong title, but it's not a very focussed essay, so I wasn't really sure. I've merged it into Floristry. Thanks! JesseW, the juggling janitor 23:01, 4 October 2005 (UTC)

copyvio template[edit]

Brilliant idea to add a copy&pasteable copyvio report line to the copyvio template, big time saver. Thanks! --fvw* 22:45, 14 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

/me bows. Why thank you! It just came to me when I noticed that it was mentioned on the WP:CP subpages, but not in the template, where it could include the info. Glad you find it useful! JesseW, the juggling janitor 22:50, 14 October 2005 (UTC)

You're awesome[edit]

It boogles my mind how it took me so long to find the goddamn load event. I didn't really see (must have missed) it on other monobooks. Much thanks! - RoyBoy 800 00:57, 3 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

unknown source counts?[edit]

Hi! I was wondering if you could be so kind as to run the unknown source count thingy again? It hasn't been done in some time, and so I'm not sure how the cleanup project is going. :-) If you don't want to do this, I wonder if you could let me know who I might ask?--Jimbo Wales 10:56, 25 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks[edit]

Thanks Jesse. It's time I was in bed but thanks for the kind words. I really do think I'm going to try and stick to the article space, it's so much easier and is more the point of it all. Anyway, have a WikiThanks, , you really cheered me up. And likewise, I appreciate the work you do round here as well. Steve block talk 22:24, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstar[edit]

For simple but beautiful additions to {{copyvio}} which made it so much easier to report copyvios! Dan100 (Talk) 20:14, 23 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Wow; three minutes after I wrote the first draft, you found the Norwegian labor party link(which I thought there probably would be one, somewhere) and fixed it up. Wow, I say again. I'm curious; did you find it via the stub-cat, or some other method? Thanks for your work on the 'pedia! JesseW, the juggling janitor 08:58, 24 December 2005 (UTC)

  • Thanks! I am Norwegian, so I knew where the article was located. But another way to find it is via the Category:Political parties in foo. By the way, thanks for making articles about Norwegian people. Punkmorten 09:28, 24 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Related Changes javascript[edit]

In August, you requested "a tranformer for Related Changes to put it in watchlist format" on Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts. I've done this at User:Cryptic/relatedchanges.js. Of course, it's obsolesced by the "Enhanced recent changes (JavaScript)" option in Preferences, if you can tolerate what that does to your watchlist (I can't). —Cryptic (talk) 16:23, 28 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
