Image Deletion

Thanks for helping me delete the old images of Image:Padre Gioacchino La Lomia.JPG and Image:Padre Gioacchino.JPG but I didn't need the latest version titled: Image:Venerable Gioacchino La Lomia.JPG to be removed from the article Gioacchino La Lomia as well. That is the only version I want left so I put the image back into the article. The older versions did not have "Venerable" listed and I wanted the appropriate title to be used on his image. Thanks---Calogero C. Villareale 18:56, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

Fatties

Just so you know, the article on "fatties in prison" wasn't an attack page, it was a reference to a recent feature on Something Awful. DS 17:09, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Its contents was "That one guy on 'prison Break" is fat.", written by User:Ensiform. That is a stinking example of an attack page. Jesse Viviano 17:18, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
Only incidentally. I have rebuked Ensiform for creating the page; however, it was explicitly a reference to the feature on Something Awful. DS 21:14, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

Question about 72.10.124.101

Hello Jesse Viviano. I wanted to ask why you tweaked the block to disallow account creation? It was definitely an abusive school IP but I usually stick with softblocks for such occasions. However I've only been an administrator for close to a month or so, so you may know better in these cases.¤~Persian Poet Gal (talk) 18:47, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

  • I am new at this as well. However, the consensus seems to be to force the account of students to be created at home when dealing with schools full of vandals to cut down on the vandalism. See {{Schoolblock}}. Jesse Viviano 18:49, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
    • Thanks I appreciate the response. I'll only enact such blocks then for these kind of extreme cases.¤~Persian Poet Gal (talk) 18:52, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
    • This will make it less likely that this address gets autoblocked. If a vandal creates an account and then continues to vandalize, the block on the school will become a hard autoblock when the vandalism only account gets blocked. Jesse Viviano 18:58, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

How to get our listing on Wikipedia

Hello Jesse,

You recently blocked my attempt to create a listing about our company on Wikipedia. See RentalHomesPlus.com. Is there any way at all to get this site mentioned? Our parent company has a listing and so do some of our competitors.

Any advice you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Why?

Can you please explain this and this? Thanks. Sarvagnya 01:20, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

I deleted a copyright violation that was uploaded over this one. I was preparing to delete when I noticed that there was an older version. I reverted to it and deleted the watermarked copyright version. Jesse Viviano 01:21, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
Somebody has reverted it. I tried rv to your ver... but something went wrong. Please take a look. Sarvagnya 09:24, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
That is your browser cache acting up. Also, I warned the copyright violator, User:Monu johnson, who uploaded the photo again, to quit. This is one of the few times you should quit your browser, restart it, and clear its cache. Jesse Viviano 15:51, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
Ok. Now I see it. But my concerns over that image arent over yet. That image is clearly either a screengrab or a cropped image from some promotional material of the Hindi movie Company. The movie is all of maybe, 8-10 yrs old at the most. I cant see how it can be public domain anywhere in the world. Please take a look. Sarvagnya 17:12, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
If you can find the source, please tag it with {{Db-copyvio|url=http://www.whereItCameFrom.tld/}}. If not, please tag it with {{PUIdisputed}} and follow the instructions there. I am not allowed to delete unless you can prove the copyright violation, per Wikipedia:Assume good faith. Jesse Viviano 17:16, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

If you are not a bot, please read the message at the top of User talk:Emax. It was at the bottom, too, but some people still posted below it (perhaps I should make it blink and scream...). Thank you, -- Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus | talk  22:44, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

I am not a bot, but I did not know where else to put image deletion warnings. I was following procedure to allow the eventual deletion to take place. If the uploader is not notified, then an administrator must not delete the image and reset the warning timer and notify the uploader. Jesse Viviano 22:56, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

Re: Please report the spam problem to meta:Talk:Spam blacklist

Thank you very much for your efforts. I had an inkling that it would require blocking an ISP and was in two minds over whether to file the report, so I decided to take care of both ends by reporting the spamlink at meta too. Anyhow, thanks very much for your consideration and I hope your efforts to help will prevent further spamming. Semi-protecting the page was a good move. ENOVIA

You placed a delete tag on the ENOVIA page The two links I created in the ENOVIA page were appropriate links. There is no explanation for ENOVIA at the moment so the best was to explain it would be to direct people to the owners of the product: dassault sysemes. I will make you a encyclopedia discription of the Product as soon as I can, but to have no discription at all seems to me like a lack of valuble information. You cannot describe ENOVIA without mentioning a Product or Company because that is what it is A PRODUCT owned by a company. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by CDC Catia (talkcontribs) 14:51, 9 March 2007 (UTC).

An article in the main space must have more than a bunch of links, or it is spam. External links are OK if they are accompanied by an article about the subject of the article. Protecting imagery

I suggest you read my comment here. Commons admins will protect high risk images; a list at the commons AN would be helpful for that. As a practical matter, if an image exists on Commons then the local version of its page is automatically full protected against uploads, but the description page is like any other non-existent article.--Nilfanion (talk) 18:10, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

AIV report on Lingofascist

I know what a fascist is, but my comment is that I don't think the word fascist is inherently grounds for a prohibited username, because it is a political idealogy and we routinely allow people to express their political preferences. In summary, I can see why someone might complain, but I don't see that it is a clear-cut case and belongs at WP:RFCN. —dgiestc 21:54, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Navdeepbains.parl.gc.ca.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Navdeepbains.parl.gc.ca.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Jesse Viviano 15:34, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

Image:Navdeepbains.parl.gc.ca.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Navdeepbains.parl.gc.ca.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

For an image of a living person to be allowed on Wikipedia just to show what he or she looks like, the image must be under a license or other condition that allows anybody to reuse the photo in any way, including commercial works. The only restrictions that Wikipedia allows on photos are that the photo may require attribution, and that the photo may require that any derivatives be relicensed under the same license. Since official photos of Canadian politicians disallow commercial reuse, the image is permissible if and only if a similar work that achieves the same purpose is impossible (e.g. the person is a fugitive like Osama bin Laden, looks very different compared to what the photo looks like (e.g. had his face disfigured or is much older than when he or she had that photo taken), or is a prisoner like Dennis Rader a.k.a. the BTK killer, where prisons probably do not want people taking photos of their prisoners because some of them, like Rader, are media hounds who get their jollies by getting their images taken by either still image or television cameras). For us to keep the photo, we must receive explicit permission to use the photo under one of the licenses listed here. Permission for use on Wikipedia is not enough, and photos used with permission where a free alternative could be created are disallowed. Jesse Viviano 15:44, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

I retagged for speedy myself, and will find a better free one. - Denny (talk) 16:04, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

Sacrificing sysop bits

I came across your idea, and the first thought I had was "brilliant!" - I was thoroughly impressed with it. Cheers, --HappyCamper 14:11, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

Congratulations on this suggestion -- it's great! More: it shows a deep understanding of how large, computer-supported cooperative projects can be administered in a largely decentralized manner. As some Internet engineering geeks used to say as one of their highest compliments, it's a solution that would "scale well" as the size of the wiki community grows. Is there continued discussion of this idea somewhere other than your talk page? Sdsds 03:51, 25 April 2007 (UTC)
There is no ongoing discussion right now as far as I know, because my original suggestion got archived when the Robdurbar thread got archived at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/IncidentArchive232#Robdurbar. My comment can be found at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/IncidentArchive232#Possible technical solutions. Maybe we need to move this discussion to the village pump. I am not sure which section of the village pump this suggestion should be debated at, because I can see it fitting into the policy, technical, or proposal sections. I almost never use the village pump myself, so I am rather unfamiliar with it.
By the way, the reason I chose one's sysop status as a sacrifice was that I felt that only a steep price would prevent this ability from getting abused. I also considered an automatic indef block when this ability was used, but that would be meaningless when the user turns around and uses {{Unblock}}. Also, I felt that using this ability would usually mean that an ArbCom case has to be filed anyways to determine which former sysop will be re-promoted, and the automatic indef block would interfere with it. I never thought about wheel wars when I thought of this solution, though a comment in the archives shows that this ability could stop them quickly. If there was a plain old wheel war where none of the administrators really misused their power except to wheel war, both could lose their sysop status (possibly temporarily). Also, this makes an easy way to resign one's sysop status if he points the business end of this ability at himself/herself.
On another note, some possible names for this ability that I could think of would be "sysop kamikaze" and "Equivalent Exchange sacrifice" (inspired by Fullmetal Alchemist). Jesse Viviano 06:34, 25 April 2007 (UTC)
This is a fantastic idea, and sorry to see it so quickly archived. Count me a supporter. The price should be steep, and it should be very clear that only ONE sysop can get their bit back in these situations. But I think it would dramatically reduce the emergency damage control time for these types of items. I suspect at least 50% less time taken in these situation, and probably less risk that everyone is "gone" so no one can act. Augustz 00:39, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
Just read the proposal in the Wikipedia Signpost. An excellent idea that cuts down on abuse and encourages resolution of serious admin disputes through discussion and mediation. ŞůṜīΣĻ¹98¹Speak 15:31, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for your comment. I accept that you are more experienced than I am. This user has a lifetime total of twenty-six vandalism warnings and three previous blocks (I take your point about one of them) with no sensible edits of any kind whatsoever. No, I do not feel that a shorter block is appropriate. Having said that, if you choose to unblock and shorten I will not start a wheel war about it. But I would be interested to hear your views as to why my decision is unreasonable. --Anthony.bradbury 01:04, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

Request for help due to personal attacks

Hi Jesse (if I may call you Jesse). We had a short discussion about a JumboTron image I uploaded a while back. Since you're an admin, I was wondering if you could help me out - I'm having trouble figuring out how to report someone who's making personal attacks against me. He is upset about my (and others') reversions of a blatantly inappropriate link he continues to add to a Emo (slang) (see the history page, noting User:Sushi-x). His attacks can be seen on my talk page (check the history if it winds up being blanked or anything). Any help you can offer would be appreciated. Thanks. Cheeser1 02:55, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

Next time you spot a personal attack on anyone, use one of the personal attack templates at Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace. If you have used a template that mentions the potential for being blocked, and the user performs another personal attack, report him or her at Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism if it is a clear-cut case or Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents if the case is more complicated, or go to Wikipedia:Resolving disputes, which is our dispute resolution process, in case it is complicated enough that you need other Wikipedians to help resolve the dispute. Note that the dispute resolution process can backfire on you if it turns out that you are in the wrong. If you are in the right, the other party will get a strong censure. I will warn your personal attacker to quit it, or else face blocking. Jesse Viviano 05:15, 3 May 2007 (UTC)
Thanks very much! Cheeser1 13:34, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

Hollar

Hollar is not a 'fake' word, nor is the notion of a hollar a 'hoax'. Simply because is was flagged and somehow deleted does not make the word contextually illegitimate. As I used for my protest, the word is widely recognized in most Appalachian areas of the United States, as well as referenced many times in American folk music and culture in general. Hollar is not a hoax.Gunny847 01:35, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

I myself have lived in the deep south for most of my life (mostly in Alabama, unfortunately. The state government there is extremely corrupt, lame, and does not care for its citizens there. I am glad I moved out of there!), and never ever heard that word used in that way, so I thought it was a hoax. Anyways, please send dictionary definitions to Wiktionary. Wikipedia is not a dictionary, but Wiktionary is.Jesse Viviano 01:41, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

GFDL in translation

The AfD of the Regno d'Italia... article presents an interesting twist on GFDL matters, I posted a further comment there, but given the likely "slam dunk" outcome of that Afd, the issue which will recur will not receive the thoughtful consideration it is due: A quick recap of my comment is below, but I'd like to get your take on this:

The whole GFDL issue is murky when it comes to intra-WP transfers. We have these "requests for translation", when someone actually does that, how is the GFDL complied with based on the (non-English language) original contents? For example, just perusing through Wikipedia:Translation/*/Completed_Translations/April_2007, I took the first article listed: Jean Fourastié, which has an en:WP history that goes back to April 18, 2007. However, it was translated from the fr:Jean Fourastié, which has a history going back to July 13, 2005; this history has not been imported to the English-language article, yet presumably the GFDL would require some credit be given to the French-language authors whose work was translated to create the English-language article.

A question about listing voice/movie roles

Hi. I was just wondering about this: when listing the roles of actors, seiyuus or the like, should one add the role to the end of the list, so that the roles are in random order, or should they be in chronological or alphabetical order? Nanettea 09:40, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

vandalism on mj page

hello I was hoping you could help me resently there was been a lot of homophobic langauge been used on the michael jackson article. "Jimmy 3280" changed king of pop to king of homosexuals in the main article. I wrote to him in his artcle telling him to grow up and he told me "sod off you old fart, Im telling the truth."

User "DaveyJones 1968" is a little more tricky, for the last few days he has contributed to the discussion page in what appeared to be a nuetral manner trying to get the estimated sales figures of jackson made smaller. however over resent hours he has shown his true colours and is infact a closet MJ HATER!!!!!!!! He said the Michael jackson wears make up because he is gay. Not only is it extremely unwise to suggest he is gay on wikipedia (we do not want to be held liable) but it is also sterotypical and homophobic. I was hoping you could speak to these people and possible have them removed if there actions continue.Realist2 21:45, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

  • Both sides have done things that are wrong. First, please be civil when warning others about being homophobic. Telling someone to "get a life" is uncivil. "Do not make homophobic comments, because personal attacks are not allowed on Wikipedia" is better. Second, insults like "Crap face" are also incivil. Calling someone a vandal when you have ample evidence to show that he or she is a vandal is not incivility, but stating the facts. As for Jimmy 3280, this guy will get blocked if he tries to vandalize one more time, and if you report him on Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. If you want to get there quickly, type "WP:AIV" in the search box. As for DaveyJones1968, please make a post at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents. If you want to get there quickly, type "WP:AN/I" in the search box. I am not sure what to do in this situation myself because both sides seem to have committed fouls here, and there are administrators who are better at taking care of incidents like this than I can deal with. I will take care of clear-cut issues myself like death threats, but this one seems to be a gray area I do not know how to handle. In fact, please send future incidents requiring administrator intervention to Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents where any administrator can take a look at the issue. Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:02746ju.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Jesse Viviano 16:00, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

I uploaded the following image from the Library of Congress Image:02746ju.jpg, the source is clearly listed on the image's wiki page, along with the link to the Library of Congress website with all the relavent information relating to the image: http://hdl.loc.gov/loc.pnp/ppmsc.02746 I further researched and found this page that references Rights and Restrictions "Which states: As a publicly supported institution the Library generally does not own rights to material in its collections. Therefore, it does not charge permission fees for use of such material and cannot give or deny permission to publish or otherwise distribute material in its collections. For further information, see the Prints and Photographs Division's online brochure, Copyright and Other Restrictions Which Apply to Publication and Other Forms of Distribution of Images: Sources for Information." I clicked on the link pertaining to the Copyright and Other Restrictions website and found this: Copyright and Other Restrictions That Apply to Publication/Distribution of Images http://www.loc.gov/rr/print/195_copr.html It seems clear to me that this image does not violate any restrictions that Wikipedia copyright violations; not only is part of the Library of Congress and can be used for public use (which is stated on the LOC website), it may also be used under the Fair Use Clause which is stated on the Copyright and Other Restrictions website. -Signaleer 04:44, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
That means that the Library of Congress may not grant nor deny permission for most of the work it contains. Since this image was published after January 1, 1923 in the United States, that means that Time magazine still owns the copyright on this image, and therefore is the entity that may grant or deny redistribution rights, fair use excepted, so this is at best a fair use image. Since this image is being used to illustrate the American mood during World War II about this person, it needs a fair use tag and a fair use rationale. Jesse Viviano 05:03, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
If you would have elaborated on this fact with your initial statement referencing the fair-use, it would have saved me a lot of time of culling through the LOC website. -Signaleer 05:11, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
I did not know that you had that misconception at first. I therefore started with a boilerplate challenge. Your response revealed your misconception, which is the misconception that led to the creation of the now-deprecated {{PD-LOC}} tag. Jesse Viviano 05:20, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
I corrected the copyright tag, therefore this discussion is moot but thank you for bringing up this valid point to my attention. -Signaleer 05:26, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

User page protection

Can you please protect this userpage? User_talk:ItamarPH.D he is still using it after being indefinately blocked. Momusufan 03:16, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

There is no valid reason to do so. He is not making personal attacks nor is he making any extortion. Jesse Viviano 04:09, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

Page List of extinct languages of Europe

Why this page deleted? It is now a red link. And there is a Category:Extinct languages of Europe. Can we combine them?Gaia2767spm 22:27, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

I misinterpreted policy in the deletion. I will try to fix this as best I could. Jesse Viviano 01:46, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

Old Zombie Computer

207.68.239.252 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log) somehow vandalized Amory, Mississippi You have stated it is a zombie computer and it was blocked (by you), he somehow got past the block. I took this up with wiki anti vand. But they didn't do anything. Warrush 15:12, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

Someone unblocked it after deciding that the proxy was closed. I only tagged the page. I never blocked it because I was not an administrator at the time it was blocked. It has been reblocked. Jesse Viviano 20:36, 18 June 2007 (UTC)
It was recently tested and shown not to be an open proxy. Use the standard vandalism warnings and block for short times if necessary. Jesse Viviano 22:09, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

Donga (film)

Hi, I don't understand what was so nonsensical about my entry for this topic. I did research across the internet for this item, and can provide links if you wish. I await your response. Clamnebula 09:11, 19 June 2007 (UTC)clamnebula

The version I deleted had nothing defining what the film is. It was a collection of random trivia that had nothing tying it together. Therefore, I could not make sense of this whatsoever, so I had to get rid of it as patent nonsense. I am not accusing you of vandalism. Vandalism is intentional damage to Wikipedia. Patent nonsense could be intentional or unintentional damage to Wikipedia. I feel that you made some unintentional nonsense and therefore am willing to give you the benefit of the doubt. However, nonsense is useless to the encyclopedia and is speedily deleted. Jesse Viviano 15:09, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

The info I entered for this film was taken from the Wikipedia entry for Chiranjeevi, who is the star of this movie. If you to go his page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiranjeevi , and scroll down the Filmography to "Donga", you'll see the same info that I posted to the individual film's page. Clamnebula 21:17, 19 June 2007 (UTC)clamnebula

Maybe the best way to handle this is to create the page in your user space at User:Clamnebula/Donga (film), make it good enough to not meet any of our criteria for speedy deletion, and then move it with the move tab at the top of the page to Donga (film). If you are a new user, this button will not work until your account is four days old because of page move vandals which moved pages to nonsensical titles at high speeds. This countermeasure makes such trolls get frustrated and go away. As for why I felt your article was nonsense, what was there was some trivia about the film without anything that defined what it was. The film might deserve its own article, but if it does, it deserves one that passers-by can understand. It has to explain what makes the film notable, include a plot synopsys, and probably a cast list and sales figures. Jesse Viviano 22:03, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

My mistake - I wrongly assumed CSD R2 applied to all non-user namespaces. However see discussion at Wikipedia talk:Criteria for speedy deletion#CSD R2. – Tivedshambo (talk) 12:07, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

Norton Commander Image Redundancy Tag Removal

Hey, I didn't put those tags there. They were put there by some asshole with some sort of bot. I think the images are very illustrative, in fact, of the whole MS-DOS to Windows journey which NC was a witness to, in its various incarnations. This was why I added the fair use rationalisations and a request to remove the redundancy tags. However, I'm not sure how image deletion works. Is it safe to just delete those tags like you just did? Won't this authorize a bot to delete the images now? Please get back to me on this. NeoThe1 19:17, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

If you uploaded the image or wrote anything major in an item nominated for speedy deletion, you can only use the {{Hangon}} tag and place a rationale on why you think that the nomination is invalid in the item's talk page. When using the {{Hangon}} tag, do not remove the original tag, as that can be seen as avoidant vandalism. If you had nothing to do with the creation of the item nominated for speedy deletion, you can remove the invalid tag, explaining yourself in the edit summary. Please see Wikipedia:Guide to deletion for an overview of how deletion is handled on Wikipedia. Jesse Viviano 19:25, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
Oh, by the way, no bot is permitted to perform deletions on Wikipedia. Jesse Viviano 19:28, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

Hey, thanks for doing the history merge. GlassFET 19:18, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Makavelism

It's not nonsence, i know 2 people who are makavelists

I thought that this was a hoax. Second, even if it was not one, it had no assertion of notability. Jesse Viviano 21:12, 4 August 2007 (UTC)
