Euthanasia[edit]

Hi. I'd like to avoid going back and forth on the page itself, which already gets alot of vandalism and npov edits. I think if you look through the nation summaries, you'll see that (1) it's hard to generalize, though if you can write-up an overall summary more power to you, and (2) some placed, like Albania and Japan, may legally allow without strict regulation or bureaucracy like NL or Belgium. Of course, the meaning of euthanasia is hotly contested, but one can easily argue that forms of passive euthanasia are legalized in the U.S. (e.g., Cruzan case) and not strongly regulated per se. What do you think? Can we drop that sentence, or what do you feel is essential to say in the intro? HG | Talk 04:39, 12 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In a nutshell, it doesn't inform the reader to say "In countries that have legalized Euthanasia it is almost always strongly regulated." Does "strongly regulated" mean (1) well-enforced or (2) subject to a a high level of rules? Sounds like you and I agree that (1) the enforcement varies widely. Nowadays, medicine is subject to increasing legal scrutiny, so we can take for granted (2) that medical/hospital laws involve lots of regulations. (You might check to see which articles discuss the increasing legal oversight of medicine, but it needn't be said in this overview.) In other words, the terms of the preceding sentences ("laws" "legal" "criminalized") adequately imply "regulation." Personally, I'd like to see the overview, besides mentioning the diversity of legal treatment, say something about the diversity: of definitions (meanings of 'euthanasia'), of actions/treatments that might be said to fall within these definitions, of in-depth moral and religious thought, of public opinion. (Ideally, I'd add something about the capacity of 'euthanasia' to instantiate the extremes of compassion and cruelty, but if I came up with artful prose it'd probably be hacked to death, so to speak.)
