Vandalism from 157.91.107.13[edit]

In addition to any additional action you deem appropriate (i.e. banning), the provider of his/her IP address is a school in Indiana, which has been notified of the nature and times of the infractions on SCOTUS and Brown v. Board of Education, with an advisory to have stern words. Simon Dodd 15:28, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

please stop making this article evil![edit]

There is a horribly pro-condom/anti-life view being expressed in this 'article' please stop re-adding it, I've already fixed the article, now don't change it anymore!--64.12.116.197 18:14, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry, but your changes to the article made it, in my view, way less neutral than it was. I see you've made a note on the talk page. Please discuss changes there when you consider controversial, big changes like that! --JoanneB 20:06, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My rant[edit]

Thanks. I agree with your analogy too. Something's broken here, and we need to fix it. I just wish someone read the rant and figured that there's things to be done. I'm back in limited capacity, so I can relax the new few days, then I'll think some more and come back fully, hopefully. Meanwhile, keep whacking the vandals... I had already caught up to you in the number of edits, and now I'll lose ground again... ;) :) Titoxd(?!? - help us) 06:24, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

:-) I'm glad your back anyway, even if it's just partly. And yes, something is very much broken right now. If you ever want to chat, and get stuff off your chest, you know where to find me :-) --JoanneB 12:32, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

See Joanne, we're poopular :)[edit]

I really am going to charge contributions for my fanclub, I think. With all those fans out there, that should be pretty lucrative ;-) Let's just take it as a compliment that those vandals are annoyed by us enough to try and annoy us back! --JoanneB 12:35, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Badly moved page[edit]

Hi JoanneB, I remember you helped me when I screwed up an article move some time ago, and I thought I might ask if you could move Adventured of Tintin back to its original name Minor characters in Tintin? Someone made an unnecessary mess out of it. Poulsen 05:14, 8 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again, now the article has been moved to Adventures of Tintin, which is evenly confusing as that isn't a good article name for for a description of Minor characters in Tintin. I hope you can help me, or please let me know who can, as a lengthy voting-to-move process shouldn't be due in order to revert this established article back to its original place. Poulsen 11:22, 8 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Done! Regards, --JoanneB 11:41, 8 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much, that's really perfect! Thank you for your time :) Poulsen 12:26, 8 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thank you very much for moving back the page to its original name. Things have been further complicated by the fact the page was moved twice by different people who didn't take the time to think twice about the move. Anyway, there is still a problem : The talk page hasn't been moved. It is still under Talk:Adventures of Tintin. So can you please also move Talk:Adventures of Tintin --> Talk:Minor characters in Tintin? Thank you very much in advance. Glaurung 07:11, 9 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
A big thank you for your help! Glaurung 14:27, 9 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks for your Speedy Support on my request for adminiship, I'm sure you'll be glad to know the final result was 92/1/0. I am now an administrator and (as always) if I do anything you have issue with, please talk about it with me. Proost! --Alf melmac 08:51, 8 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your support on my request for adminship.

The final outcome was (80/3/0), so I am now an administrator. I was flattered by the level of support and the comments, so I'm under real pressure not to disappoint, thus if you have any queries, suggestions or problems with any of my actions as an admin then please leave me a note --pgk(talk) 10:08, 8 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey man,I need to know much. I am creating a user page for myself and want to know how I can get images from outside and keep them on my user page. Also, while editing, how can you change an image into a new one from your saved pictures on your computer.Batzarro 16:08, 10 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, sorry it took me so long to respond! You might want to look at this page: Wikipedia:Uploading images, I think it will answer your question. Regards, --JoanneB 11:22, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Could you help me?[edit]

Could you add Gerard Way to your watchlist? it's being left in a vandalized state for hours on end. I've added it to #w-e-v but it keeps being taken off by someone. So we're having a protection war on it and I want to avoid it. Thanks for your help. --Woohookitty(cat scratches) 20:24, 10 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's on my watchlist, I'll keep an eye on it! --JoanneB 11:23, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Watchlist[edit]

How does a Watchlist work? Batzarro 09:44, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Basically, it allows you to keep track on certain pages. You can add articles to it by clicking the 'watch' tab. When you log in, you'll see a link to your watchlist in the top right corner of the page, and there you'll see the most recent changes to the articles that are part of your watchlist. --JoanneB 11:26, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just wondering why you reverted the page without discussion. Lentilsoup 11:18, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I did so while I was patrolling the recent changes for vandalism, because you deleted the complete article (without discussion), to replace it with information about another band. I was planning to leave you a message about it afterwards, but something else came up, sorry about that. --JoanneB 11:23, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I did not delete the article, I moved it to a more appropriate page. Do you know anything about either band called Pentagram? Are you a fan of doom metal? If (as I suspect) the answer to both questions is "No", why did you revert my changes without discussion? Lentilsoup 11:32, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Because from what you were doing, it was not clear what you were doing and why. You did not provide an edit summary, so when you removed the text from that article, it was not obvious that you were 'moving it to a more appropriate page'. By the way, regarding those moves, please take a look at Help:Renaming (moving) a page, since the way you are moving those pages is not the right procedure. I'm a bit surprised by your emphasis on me doing stuff without discussion while you are renaming and moving pages without discussion yourself. The only thing I did was move stuff back to the way it was, since I did not see an explanation or discussion about it on the talk page or anywhere else. --JoanneB 11:40, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't discuss it because I thought the need for the change would have been obvious to anyone who knew anything about the topic. You also reverted the page again after I had explained the change on the talk page, and accused me of vandalism without bothering to look at the facts. If I were unfamiliar with Wikipedia, this episode would not have encouraged me to continue contributing to it. Fortunately, I already know that it attracts control freaks and busybodies who enjoy throwing their weight around. Lentilsoup 11:54, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If you were more familiar with the amount of vandalism that Wikipedia has to endure every day, you might understand a bit better why I did what I did. You might have meant well, but in the beginning, that was not clear, and when you repeated your action, the move was still performed wrong, so I reverted it again. As for the vandalism warning: I did not see your message on the talk page then, sorry about that. I have now fixed all of that (or I hope I have), so now the page history has been restored. As for the 'control freaks and busybodies who enjoy throwing their weight around' - please read Wikipedia:No personal attacks. I still wish you all the best and hope you'll have a good time contributing to Wikipedia. Regards, --JoanneB 12:04, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Rama[edit]

Hello JoanneB, thanks for correcting me on the rename / move of Rama. Actually this had been discussed, scattered between the article talk page, my talk page, and that of Pizzadeliveryboy who had previously moved it. I'm aware of standard practice on moving and renaming, but forgot that the old Rama redirect page would no longer have any history with it. Could I ask you to correct the other such copy move I made at the same time please. That's for the current Ravana article, which now has no edit history. Thanks, Imc 15:40, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, no problem! I corrected the other one as well. Regards, --JoanneB 17:01, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protect[edit]

The Jesus article has received some recent anon vandalism, semi-protect?Gator (talk) 14:59, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've looked at the last 500 edits (not individually, of course..) and it doesn't really look like there's more anon vandalism today or this week than before. I think we'll have to accept that articles like that are high profile.. Luckily, many editors have it on their watchlist and the RC patrollers are pretty alert on it, so vandalism on pages like this rarely goes undetected for long. 195.93.21.35 Vandalism[edit]

Hey, Doktorb here. I note I have been blocked, just as I was getting my teeth into Filton and Bradley Stoke!

I know being an AOL user means putting up with this kind of thing, but unless the actual user was creating merry Hell, could the block be removed at the earliest possibility so I can get on with creating new articles from Constituencies in the next United Kingdom general election ??

Many thanks - I want to apologise for being a tricky AOL user as well, mind...

. doktorb | words 19:05, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I only blocked for an hour, so you would have been unblocked in a few minutes anyway, but I unblocked it now so you should be fine. Let me know if you're not! Regards, --JoanneB 19:10, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for blocking Crazy-eyztheonly1[edit]

Thankyou for blocking Crazy-eyztheonly1 just now. I am fairly new here and am trying to get involved with the community a bit - primarily by doing RC patrol. It is edifying to know that my first "confrontation" was watched on by someone who determined that my "test1" and "test2" were appropriate (I assume). So yeah, thanks! Also, it is a milestone for me to have had my talk page vandalised - now I'll have to go and get a new userbox to tally the experience. Lol. Witty lama 13:58, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yup you'll see me later, am verified an all that jazz. Just at work on IE6 with no Chatzilla on works machine (I'm only allowed personal laptop use at weekends) so can't join you 'til I get home :( --Alf melmac 13:36, 19 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, see you later then! I didn't see you on the new list, that's why I asked (the vandalism channel is invite only now). See Wikipedia:Counter Vandalism Unit/IRC Channel Verifications. --JoanneB 14:34, 19 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yup, no problem there JoanneB - was up til way past my bedtime last night/this morning following the process and making sure I could get in, should be no problem. Thanks for the extra thought. --Alf melmac 14:42, 19 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
In that case I'll ask Essjay why you're not on the list! No big deal of course, it just had me puzzled :-) See you later! --JoanneB 14:43, 19 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Transportation in NYC[edit]

Hello Joanne - I notice you've done work on the New York City article. The Transportation in New York City sub article has really come along and has been nominated to be a US Collaboration of the Week. Dutch language[edit]

Hello, I wondered whether you could help me with a translation of an acronym that's used here? I'm wondering about: Wieteke Cramer (1.500m) uitzending o.v.b., as I'm not quite sure what o.v.b. means. Thanks for any help you can give! Sam Vimes 13:27, 23 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm pretty sure it means 'onder voorbehoud', which translates as "with reservations" or "with (a certain) proviso". In this context, for some reason they are not sure yet if she'll be sent to the Olympic Games. Hope this helps, let me know if it doesn't or if you have any other questions! --JoanneB 13:38, 23 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I award this Barnstar to JoanneB for being a friendly and very helpful wikipedian. Thanks! Ali K

Oh what a complete mess. That’s the last time I’m ever leaving my computer unattended again. Sorry for what appeared to be me vandalising his page. I was just talking to the school’s technician and when I returned I realised that the guy sitting next to me had edited under my account. I’m so sorry and I realise I may have to explain this again in the course of the next few days. By the way, the IP address I was using was 194.80.20.10, and I am pretty sure whoever it was vandalising under that address before was the same person who edited under my name. Ashida Kim vandalism[edit]

You had some Ashida Kim vandalism to your userpage; I did a history cleansing to remove it from the page history. If you notice anything askew, it's probably my fault, just ask me about it in IRC. Essjay TalkContact 07:28, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

An Esperanzial note[edit]

As I remember, the last spam that was handed out was on the 20th of December last year, so I think it's time for another update. First and foremost, the new Advisory Council and Administrator General have been elected. They consist of myself as Admin General and FireFox, Titoxd, Flcelloguy and Karmafist as the Advisory Council. We as a group met formally for the first time on the 31st of Decembe. The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.

In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: {{EA-welcome}} (courtesy of Bratsche). Some of our old hands may like to make sure they do everything on the list as well ;) Additionally, the userpage award program proposal has become official is operational: see Wikipedia:Esperanza/User Page Award to nominate a userpage or volunteer as a judge. Also see the proposed programs page for many new proposals and old ones that need more discussion ;)

Other than that, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and wish you an Esperanzially good new WikiYear :D Thank you! --Celestianpower háblame 16:57, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

But no one is helping me![edit]

I have asked a simple question: what is the next step? The criteria are being ignored by the administrators who have thus far posted, and it is unclear to me who decides in this matter. Is it a question of convincing one administrator of the merits? I can understand an individual administrator deciding, For my part, I shall exercise my administrator's discretion by checking BBC, Google, etc., for guidance I can also understand one saying, At the end of the day, Wikipedia is not a glocal news service, so let's see what the gloal news services say, and just aggregate. I will turn the question back on you: is it not odd that CNN and BBC have not covered this? Doesn't it seem anomalous? Not making the main page is one thing, not listed at all is indefensible. StrangerInParadise 16:28, 31 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

One of the main things you need to consider is that Wikipedia doesn't make the news, nor does it report it, it mainly reports what others are reporting. I do not have any insights in the reasons that other resources have not covered it yet, I don't think any Wikipedian can answer that. I play no role in deciding which stories appear on the main page and I'm afraid I can't help you any further. The reason that I removed the {{helpme}} tag from your page is that it had appeared in the channel (#wikipedia-bootcamp) and that we were aware of your request. The tag is mainly meant for 'newbie' questions for using and editing the Wikipedia encyclopedia, for discussions about the justifiability of an item not appearing on the main page, I advise you to discuss it on the appropriate page Wikipedia:In the news section on the Main Page/Candidates and its talk page. I'm sorry I can't be of further assistance! --JoanneB 17:15, 31 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

One of the main things you need to consider is that Wikipedia doesn't make the news, nor does it report it

I considered, acknowledged and discussed it, yes. I also gave a long list list of news outlets covering the issue. I'm very clear on what Wikipedia is and is not. What I am not clear on is why administrators are apparently ignoring the stated guidelines. I did not ask you why it was not covered by BBC, etc: I asked whether you thought it was unusual. In other words, perhaps the rule of thumb in use does not in this case serve the actual policy. StrangerInParadise 17:33, 31 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I should clarify as well. There should be a proper place to contest this, and call for a vote, other than the candidate page (which I have already swamped, as no one will tell me what to do next). I'm thinking that this is an editorial issue, and so both editors and admins should have a vote, like an Wikipedia:Articles for deletion process/[title] page, but need process guidance. Parken image[edit]

Hi. Can you help me finding the right fair use-license to Image:Parken.jpg? I have seen the list but I didn't find some thing. I have been "threaten" with to get some images deleted if I didn't came up with a lisence, as I however found. It would be annoying if it got deleted.

As talked about on User talk:Kalaha and User talk:Poulsen may it could be registered as fair use when Parken is cultural importent for Denmark.

Hi, there's a reason that you can't find an appropriate fair use template: I don't think there's any way that using this image can be qualified as fair use. I'm afraid the image can't be used, so it probably will be deleted... Perhaps you could request an image of it, by placing it in this category: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikipedia_requested_photographs. Regards, --JoanneB 20:44, 31 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
