Wikipedia is not a site for people to write about themselves or their families. I read that you are an artist who "who promotes and sells his work exclusively over the internet" - good luck with that, but Wikipedia is not the place to do it, because it is not for any kind of promotion. I already reached high level of international recognition . I'm a well known artist around the world. I do not use wikipedia for promotion. My site gets only 60 clicks a month from wikipedia in compare to 20,000 from facebook and 10,000 from Deviantart. Please check alexa.com for afremov.com , you will see that wikipedia does not generate traffic on afremov.com.

I need to have a page on wikipedia. I already reached a level where its a requirement. Without a wikipedia page, galleries and museums cannot take me seriously . everyone says if you are a real deal, you must be on wikipedia. I have pages in many other languages in wikipedia but the English (main) page was removed. How can I have the page resorted or written in a different manner? Please google Leonid Afremov. You will see more than 10,000 of different sources and pages. I think we can work something out. I need help in this aspect because bios of living persons is a very sensitive thing on wikipedia. I have no information coming for Hakeem Ali Mohammad when I google it it come with the old information for which I had requested for deletion. The information does show in wikipedia when I search it but dont get it when i google it...Kindly help me in this. It takes Google a little time to catch up. When I google "Hakeem Ali Mohammad" now, the article appears as the first time on the search. VisualEditor newsletter for September 19, 2013

VisualEditor has been updated twice in the last two weeks. As usual, what is now running on the English Wikipedia had a test run at Mediawiki during the previous week.

As announced, the toolbar was redesigned to be simpler, shorter, and to have the ability to have drop-down groups with descriptions. What you see now is the initial configuration and is expected to change in response to feedback from the English Wikipedia and other Wikipedias. The controls to add <u> (underline), <sub> (subscript), and <sup> (superscript), <s> (strikethrough) and <code> (computer code/monospace font) annotations to text are available to all users in the drop-down menu. At the moment, all but the most basic tools have been moved into a single drop-down menu, including the tools for inserting media, references, reference lists, and templates. The current location of all of the items in the toolbar is temporary, and your opinions about the best order are needed! Please offer suggestions at Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Feedback/Toolbar.

In an eagerly anticipated upgrade to the reference dialog, newly added references or reference groups no longer need the page to be saved before they can be re-used (bugs 51689 and 52000). The 'Use existing reference' button is now disabled on pages which don't yet have any references (bug 51848). The template parameter filter in the transclusion dialog now searches both parameter name and label (bug 51670).

In response to several requests, there are some new keyboard shortcuts. You can now set the block/paragraph formatting from the keyboard: Ctrl+0 sets a block as a regular paragraph; Ctrl+1 up to Ctrl+6 sets it as a Heading 1 ("Page title") to Heading 6 ("Sub-heading 4"); Ctrl+7 sets it as pre-formatted (bug 33512). Ctrl+2, which creates level 2 section headings, may be the most useful.

Some improvements were made to capitalization for links, so typing in "iPhone" will offer a link to "iPhone" as well as "IPhone" (bug 50452).

Copying and pasting within the same document should work better as of today's update, as should copying from VisualEditor into a third-party application (bug 53364, bug 52271, bug 52460). Work on copying and pasting between VisualEditor instances (for example, between two articles) and retaining formatting when copying from an external source into VisualEditor is progressing.

Major improvements to editing with input method editors (IMEs; mostly used for Indic and East Asian languages) are being deployed today. This is a complex change, so it may produce unexpected errors. On a related point, the names of languages listed in the "languages" (langlinks) panel in the Page settings dialog now display as RTL when appropriate (bug 53503).

Looking ahead: The help/'beta' menu will soon expose the build number next to the "Leave feedback" link, so users can give more specific reports about issues they encounter (bug 53050). This change will make it easier for developers to identify any cacheing issues, once it starts reporting the build number (currently, it says "Version false"). Also, inserting a link, reference or media file will put the cursor after the new content again (bug 53560). Next week’s update will likely improve how dropdowns and other selection menus behave when they do not fit on the screen, with things scrolling so the selected item is always in view.

If you are active at other Wikipedias, the next group of Wikipedias to have VisualEditor offered to all users is being finalized. About two dozen Wikipedias are on the list for Tuesday, September 24 for logged-in users only, and on Monday, September 30 for unregistered editors. You can help with translating the documentation. In several cases, most of the translation is already done, and it only needs to be copied over to the relevant Wikipedia. If you are interested in finding out whether a particular Wikipedia is currently on the list, you can leave a message for me at my talk page.

The artice was written about Phyllida Beck, My coach and best friend. I have known her for years and she recently moved to Australia and needs help getting her coaching out and about. And I thought I could help her.

I did not know about the Citations rule with at least 1 reliable source and I did not know we had to insert them... I am truly sorry for the trouble my deletion caused, but I treasure her with all my heart and she means the world to me and so does figure skating and she brought that to me. What exactly was the reasoning for deleting the Mishapocalypse? It says incomplete on the explanation but as far as I know the usual procedure for that is to ask for it to be completed. No, it's not trollng to ask the question, but there were trolls about that day - see the deletion log. It was 1 April, when we expect all kinds of nonsense. The first article was about a newly-created internet meme, written in a jokey April-fool style: "we're here asking you to join the mishapocalyse today! Firstly you must accept Misha as your overlord, before accepting him around you. Then you must become Misha. Be the Misha... " - not suitable for a serious encyclopedia, and with no references to the necessary significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources.

After it was deleted a lot of trolls kept posting things like "THE MISHAS WILL WIN! WE ARE STRONGER THAN WIKIPEDIA!" until after the sixth deletion the title was salted - protected against re-creation, and once it was no longer 1 April they lost interest. About the Afremov page

Hi John!

I was interested in Leonid Afremov and astonished to find that his Wikipedia page was removed and the reason was said to be the COPYRIGHT. Then I checked afremov.com and found the content of its introduction of the artist was from Wikipedia exactly. So I am writing to ask whether there is a way to make the page of Afremov available again on Wikipedia.

OOPS! Before I click SAVE PAGE, I found the previous messages from Afremov himself. I understand that Wikipedia is not for promotion but the direct promotion part can be cut down. Afremov is indeed an excellent artist. These lights and colors in his paintings are totally magical. I think at least he deserves a page on Wikipedia.

Crabtree's Bludgeon

I wanted to look up Crabtree's Bludgeon but found that is has been deleted on the grounds that it is a hoax. As of the last time I viewed the page, it clearly stated that the axiom was attributed to Joseph Crabtree, a fictional character. The article was thus not meant to deceive wikipedia readers.

The axiom does not exist as a one off Wikipedia page someone made for a laugh. Its presence in the following BMJ article (albeit, a farcical Christmas edition special)indicates that Crabtree's Bludgeon has a cultural presence in the real world as well. http://www.bmj.com/content/343/bmj.d7769

I think it could be a redirect to a mention in an expanded version of the extremely thin Joseph Crabtree (fictional polymath) article, and I will have a go at that, though it will probably not be for a week or so. Speedy deletion of page I would like to correct

Hello JohnCD. I noticed that a page I had created [Chad Van De Keere] was deleted rather quickly this morning before I had any time to make any adjustments to it to ensure the article fit correctly within the boundaries of wiki without copyright infringement. Is there a way the page can be restored so that I can still correct that page or do I have to start over on it. I notice on your list of reasons for deleting a page at the bottom you had mentioned it might be easier to start from scratch but I would prefer to properly edit what was already created to be original material for wiki based on the sources. @Wondrousomnibus: no, sorry, we can't have copyright text in Wikipedia, not even temporarily for rewriting - read Wikipedia:Copy-paste. You can see the original here, but you really need to start from a clean sheet, because (a) minor re-wording or WP:Close paraphrasing does not avoid a copyright violation, (b) that is far too promotional in tone: a LinkedIn entry is written to sell someone, but an encyclopedia article is quite a different thing and needs a WP:Neutral point of view, and (c) just copying one source is not enough, you need to show references to significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources to establish Wikipedia:notability. The fact that something has happened and been reported does not necessarily mean that it should be included in an encyclopedia article. The material you want to include has been removed more than once by other users: per WP:BRD if you think it should be restored you should start a discussion on the article talk page and try to reach a WP:Consensus about what to include. I notice that, some time ago, you deleted a page for "Tanya Berenson," who is the daughter of an Olympic gymnastics champion, and who now runs the first and largest U.S. Olympic training facility in L.A. with her mother and hosts L.A. Lights, the international gymnastics event that takes place annually in L.A. Tanya was a Junior Olympian and an equestrian medal-winner. She's a US Gymnastics judge and works with the film industry in gymnastic training. In the world of gymnastics, she's substantial. In the world of Wikipedia, I'm not very well educated about what warrants a deletion. Anything you can do to help clarify would be most appreciated! Deletion of International Society for Philosophical Enquiry

I would like to understand the reasoning behind the deletion of the Wikipedia page for the International Society for Philosophical Enquiry which occurred today. Founded in 1974, ISPE is one of the earliest ultra-high IQ societies, and presently has about 500 members worldwide. It publishes a quarterly journal for its membership, as well as a monthly newsletter.

Apart from the seemingly ongoing anti-IQ society movement spearheaded by user WeijiBaikeBianji, who seems to maintain that any high-IQ society (with the possibility of the behemoth Mensa) is insufficiently notable, I do not understand the purpose of deleting a fairly modest page with reference value. The reasoning that such societies have memberships too small to be significant is spurious. By definition, such societies have a limited membership. There are plenty of other organizations with small memberships that are significant in other areas.

It appears that high-IQ organizations are being targeted on Wikipedia simply because there are some who dislike them. This is a philosophical stance, and whether or not one likes the principles involved does not obviate the value of presenting reference information on such organizations.

In the early days it was thought that Wikipedia might be a "list of everything", but it was soon realised that a useful encyclopedia would have to be selective. The inclusion criterion worked out over time is called Wikipedia:Notability, and is not a matter of opinion but has to be demonstrated by showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." The test is, have people not connected with the subject thought it significant or important enough to write substantial comment about? That is a more objective test than "do we think it's important?" and has the advantage that existence of external sources provides a basis for an article which is not simply the subject using Wikipedia to tell the world about itself; but it is quite a demanding test, many worthy people and organizations do not pass it, and the conclusion of the deletion debate was the ISPE does not. • @Prathamprakash29: thank you for the barnstar, but I will not undelete the page, because it was almost entirely copied from the school's website, which is marked "Copyright © New R.S.J. Public School ALLD. 2013. All Right Reserved." Even apart from the copyright violation, it is not a matter of removing some of the glowing adjectives like splendid... successful... spacious... well-equipped: the whole thing was written to "sell" the school, it was the story the school wants to tell the world about itself. Thanks for the quick delete of the doc page for my template. I try to keep pages that don't need to be out there marked for deletion. Let me know if you need any help with anything. I patrol new pages, recent changes, and really try to monitor vandalism. I actually have a user I'm concerned about, all the edits under this IP have been unconstructive. I have him on my watchlist and I'll check in on his contribs everyday but I did issue a final warning. If this continues, what do you suggest I do? @Cliffsteinman: the place to report a persistent vandal is WP:AIV, which is watched by many admins, but read the notice marked Important at the top - the vandal needs to have been adequately warned first (see WP:Vandalism#Warnings) and persisted despite the warnings. Hi and thanks for the explanation about Berenson. It may be that the LA School of Gymnastics is significant and/or that Tanya's professional gymnastics career was significant; still researching.

Yes, I am in the PR business, formerly Bloomberg's head of PR and before that worked for Dennis Kozlowski when he was CEO at Tyco International. As per Wikipedia's standards I'm not editing Tanya's entry; rather I'm asking you for insight about it.

I agree with the standards for sure. We have PR Newswire for that kind of promotion. But if I see an inaccuracy or omission or needed update I'll certainly suggest it, whether it's for a client or for another person I am familiar with.

Something else that occurred to me. It's obvious the SPAs don't know anything about bulldozer archaeology except what they've learned from the controversy. It's interesting that the first editor's only edits show he knows how to cite, while Naustin hasn't a clue about citing but knows about mediation. Interesting. By the way, here's a 2007 blog on the issue relating to Israel[2]. Sooner or later if the article stays we need to mention some concrete issues and controversies about the subject - I wish I had time right now to dig into it. Oops, no pun intended there. Could you clarify your closure here? The DRV was about whether the original FFD discussions were correct or not, but you closed it based on whether the G4 deletions were correct, which is a different issue. Question about a quote on Game Insight

Game Insight - quotes one of the staff - Leonid Sirotin - (BLP) from his (reputed) facebook page. But the page is not visible to general viewing so can't be confirmed. It's originally in russian so I can't run a google search to see if anyone else cited him saying it. Since I've noticed your list for this, I wondered if you've seen the list of IPs going back to 2010 here, here and in other related threads. Appears to use pretty much anywhere in the Wyoming Valley if all 3 years are counted. Vandal has claimed some hoax taxa to be authored by "Edward J. @Koumz: very interesting, thanks - I didn't know anyone else was tracking this! I have been using "Ostroski" as a search term to find them. I don't think anything can be done except play whack-a-mole, as the IPs are too widely spread for a rangeblock. The talk page hoaxes are just a minor nuisance, but more seriously they sometimes insert them into actual articles. I have been thinking about posting at WP:AN, mainly to ask other admins to be aware of it, so that when deleting an orphaned talk page of a pseudo-scientific nature they can check the IP's other edits to see if any need reverting, and to ask for comments on my recent tactic of blocking the IPs for two weeks, since they seem to be static over a few days. Since the issue is now 3 years old (although sporadic) and counting, I agree with your idea about posting it at AN so that it's not just the few of us watching it and so that people have an idea what they're seeing (although many may not be biology specialists, a taxobox full of redlinked taxa, especially at the ranks above genus, is a good trigger for an investigation, at minimum), and know to track down (and revert, as is almost always necessary) any other edits from the same address (he has no good edits that I've ever come across). What a sorry stub. Unfortunately the IMDB website appears to be under a Denil of Service attack for the last 24 hours and I am unable to access information about the 1995 project. HOWEVER, once I can use it to expand my own search parameters I am a bit slowed in a rescue. BUT, full reviews in TV Guide and New York Times indicate to me that the film meets WP:NF. When I can get back into the IMDB database, I will take a personal hand in the article's expansion and improvement. VisualEditor newsletter on 16 October 2013

VisualEditor is still being updated every Thursday. As usual, what is now running on the English Wikipedia had a test run at Mediawiki during the previous week. If you haven't done so already, you can turn on VisualEditor by going to your preferences and choosing the item, "MediaWiki:Visualeditor-preference-enable".

The reference dialog for all Wikipedias, especially the way it handles citation templates, is being redesigned. Please offer suggestions and opinions at mw:VisualEditor/Design/Reference Dialog. (Use your Wikipedia username/password to login there.) You can also drag and drop references (select the reference, then hover over the selected item until your cursor turns into the drag-and-drop tool). This also works for some templates, images, and other page elements (but not yet for text or floated items). References are now editable when they appear inside a media item's caption (bug 50459).

There were a number of miscellaneous fixes made: Firstly, there was a bug that meant that it was impossible to move the cursor using the keyboard away from a selected node (like a reference or template) once it had been selected (bug 54443). Several improvements have been made to scrollable windows, panels, and menus when they don't fit on the screen or when the selected item moves off-screen. Editing in the "slug" at the start of a page no longer shows up a chess pawn character ("♙") in some circumstances (bug 54791). Another bug meant that links with a final punctuation character in them broke extending them in some circumstances (bug 54332). The "page settings" dialog once again allows you to remove categories (bug 54727). There have been some problems with deployment scripts, including one that resulted in VisualEditor being broken for an hour or two at all Wikipedias (bug 54935). Finally, snowmen characters ("☃") no longer appear near newly added references, templates and other nodes (bug 54712).

Looking ahead: Development work right now is on rich copy-and-paste abilities, quicker addition of citation templates in references, setting media items' options (such as being able to put images on the left), switching into wikitext mode, and simplifying the toolbar. A significant amount of work is being done on other languages during this month. If you speak a language other than English, you can help with translating the documentation.

Beetle deletions

FYI, I reversed two of your speedy deletions, Altica bicarinata and Altica aenescens. Mishae put them up for deletion (and he wasn't really sole editor, so G7 probably shouldn't have applied, but whatever), and then re-created them under the belief that this would save space on the server somehow. See [5] and [6] for discussion. I ran across these while dealing with yet another speedy nomination from him (which I declined) and I apologize for not discussing with you first. @Mishae: no, Mackensen is right, and whoever told you about saving space on the servers is quite wrong. Nothing is actually removed from the servers (that is why admins can see and restore deleted articles), so deleting and re-creating an article simply takes up more space, as well as losing the history. @Mackensen: I am jealous, I have been called many things but never achieved promotion to rouge admin! According to G7, I, as an author had a right to delete them, no matter what. I am shocked to find out that people are like cattle here. It sounds like that no one can be an individual and everyone need to dance to tune, and those that wont will get either criticized or blocked at the discretion of (sorry to say that) evil admins. If I would have been an admin, I would have deleted those articles and recreated them. I personally don't see anything bad in doing so, however some folks think its against their rules, which are many, and probably were designed so that the admins have more leeway to block users for whatever reason they want. You do not have a "right" to delete them, and you certainly don't have a right to delete them no matter what. G7 is an author's request for deletion. It's not that "some folks think" it's against the rules; it is against the rules. Wikipedia's content is released under a license that requires attribution to all the authors of an article, not just the main author. This rule applies even to copying within Wikipedia. Deletion and recreation breaks this by removing the attribution; if you reuse the exact same content in a new article, you are reusing it without acknowledging that others may have worked on it, too. This is against the copyright rules. Not to mention the fact (and it really cannot be stressed enough) that there is no point to doing this, because it doesn't save space on the servers; it actually costs space on the servers.

Mishae, nobody wants to block you over this, and nobody will if you are willing to learn from this and move forward. This was an understandable mistake to make, and that's fine. But it's important that you acknowledge that it was a mistake, or at the very least agree not to do it any more. To be honest, I'm not really sure why you feel disrespected, but I'm sorry that you feel so: this is no kind of reflection on your abilities as an editor, none whatsoever. O.K. Still confused. On one hand you say that I have no right to delete them but at the same time, as an author I can ask for deletion, (since request is the same thing as asking)? If people are worrying that I am reusing their content without their consent, then maybe as an honest editor I will ask their permission first (I think its O.K. to do)? See, Ryan told me (and so did many other admins) is that I can combine my minor edits into bigger one, that's why I decided to delete and recreate it. What I mean by saying you don't have the right to delete them is this: you are allowed to ask for deletion, but that doesn't mean that admins are obligated to actually delete it just because you asked. You're allowed to make the request, but admins are also allowed to decline that request.

I think you misunderstood what Ryan was trying to tell you. What I'm pretty sure that Ryan meant was this: If you were planning on making many small changes to an article, you could make them all at once and then save the page only once, as opposed to making a small change, saving, making another small change, saving, and so on for each change. In essence, he's saying that you could make one edit that incorporates all of your changes, rather than a separate edit for each change. He meant to combine your edits as you're making them, not after you've already made them. After the changes are already made, it's too late to worry about server storage: there is nothing you can do to actually reduce the amount of space Wikipedia uses. Nothing. Combining edits the way Ryan suggests minimizes the additional storage that the new edits will incur, but nothing can reduce the amount of storage that existing edits already incur.

Even if there was, there's really no point in worrying about it: storage space is abundantly cheap, and there is no shortage of it at all. For reference: the full wikitext of the page Altica bicarinata is 994 bytes. This is nearly a kilobyte (1024 bytes), so let's round up and say it's a kilobyte. The page has 23 revisions, so let's say each revision is the same size. So, the total storage space for this article, with all its history, is 23 kilobytes. I can buy a 3 terabyte hard drive for $200. This $200 hard drive can store well over 140 million copies of this article with its entire history; put another way, the space required to store this article and all its history would cost me .000142802 of a cent (that is, $.00000142802). I appreciate that you're trying to help, but the scale of the storage savings you're trying for are, to be frank, completely insignificant. Writ Keeper ⚇♔ 23:13, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

Well, if JohnCD is an admin and he made a decision to delete, then that's his decision. This thing sounds like you and many other admins (my guess), undermined John's credibility as an admin, and probably told him via IRC channel or any other electronic device that he will get blocked if he will do it his way, the admin way, because Wikipedia is not a place for individual thinking or what not. That's just my assumption, if it sounds like I am assuming bad faith, I am sorry, but that's how it is played out in Russian Wikipedia, so I assume it from there. If I am wrong let me know, but I have a feeling that overtime Wikipedia lost its credibility of being a site where people can freely edit. Like, in Russian Wikipedia for example, you make a stupid mistake, if a tiny one, you don't get a second chance. I don't know if its the same case here though. I will however, try to abide by every rule necessary, but as I mentioned earlier, Wikipedia have too many rules and some of them contradict with each other, not to mention that every Wikipedia language section have its own rules and traditions which a user need to abide by as well as the main rules.

Your assumption is entirely wrong, and en:wp is nothing like you imagine. I do not use IRC, and it is absurd to imagine that an admin would be threatened with blocking over an unimportant incident like this. I deleted those pages because I did not know that your reason for deletion was the mistaken idea that deleting and re-creating them would save space. If I had known that, I would not have deleted them. Nothing is actually deleted from the servers, so deleting and re-creating uses more space, and arguing about it uses still more; but space is very, very cheap, so that is not serious. If you were advised to make a few large edits instead of many small ones, that was not primarily to save space but to avoid cluttering page histories. Yes most articles are edited by many people and so G7 does not apply to them, but it is still useful for cases where a sole author realises he has made a mistake.

That was a blatant advertisement, written to "sell" the company and say how wonderful it is. Wikipedia is for information, not puffery, and requires a neutral point of view; anything like your article is speedily deleted. Long ago I read an old magazine article, maybe in Country Life, which explained that they had been developed in the 1920s with the rise of the motor car, I think by a Chshire County Surveyor, who had them installed to replace hedges at corners in order to improve visibility; but I have never been able to track it down, or find any other source. You have revived my interest, and I will start digging again. They are pretty well confined to Cheshire afaik, though I passed an example a few miles into Staffordshire yesterday. I deleted it as a result of the deletion discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Major Napoleão Bezerra. Wikipedia is quite selective about subjects for articles: the inclusion criterion is called WP:Notability (em Português: pt:Wikipédia:Critérios de notoriedade) and requires references to "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject (cobertura significativa de fontes reputadas e independentes do assunto tratado.)" Also, the article seemed to be written as a memorial from his family, but that is not appropriate for an encyclopedia - see WP:NOTMEMORIAL #4.

I see that an article on the Portuguese Wikipedia was deleted for similar reasons: "Biografia sem fontes fiáveis independentes e providas por terceiros que corroborem as informações fornecidas e atestem relevância."

If independent sources can be found to establish notability, it might be best to start by writing an article on the Portuguese Wikipedia, whose editors would be better placed to assess them; if accepted there, translation to the English Wikipedia could be considered. Thanks for the message on my article submission Dragons: Real Myths and Unreal Creatures. I was trying to recreate this article from one I previously submitted under another account. That could be why it was looked at as a copyrighted piece since I did copy and paste from the original document which was blocked because I created it under my business name rather than as a personal user. I have rectified that situation, but cannot revise the original article. I did not merely copy and paste from another source to my knowledge. Most of the information is contained within the film. I did use IMDB and other sources, and did reference other books and articles that have been written on the film and dragon-related topics. If I need to be more specific about just the film, please let me know and I would be happy to revise the article to better suit Wikipedia's standards. It's my first article, and I tried to follow all guidelines closely. I would appreciate any specific feedback you may have. Perhaps I need to create something more specifically and succinctly about the film and its unique docu-fictional approach and have other contributors add the additional dragon information. Could use your assistance

I was reviewing Abolfazl Ramezani Moghaddam and I did a google search to find that much of the page didn't make sense. The man according to the search was a UK national, the companies owned by other people (note one of the companies has just changed name)..I could be wrong. But I put a CSD on it hoping someone else could comment. The references are all links to the page itself which could be a coding mistake. But the owner has repeatedly removed the tag although I asked him not to. I have put it back a couple of times but I won't keep doing it because I won't go to war. But I could use a sensible third person to take a look at the page and check it. I will back off in the meantime and leave it alone. Will you have a peak? @Nannadeem: your position is not that of a first grade pupil excluded from school for learning slowly. Nobody wants to exclude you from Wikipedia, and you do not need permission from me, or from anyone, to write another article.

Your position is more like that of someone who wants to play the drums and is trying to join a group which is only for playing the violin. What you want to do - publish your original ideas and theories - is reasonable, but Wikipedia is not the place to do it, because it is in Wikipedia's terms "original research", reading a lot of source material and deriving a new idea. That is called SYNTHESIS - a good thing to do, but not what an encyclopedia is for. An encyclopedia is only for summarising ideas that have already been published. That is why the WP:No original research policy says:

"Do not combine material from multiple sources to reach or imply a conclusion not explicitly stated by any of the sources."

I advised you to look for another outlet only because I am afraid that if you continue to write similar articles they will also be deleted, and that would be a waste of your time and ours. When you look here and here and here, you will see that everyone is saying the same, and you should accept that this is what the Wikipedia community thinks.

My good friend Marcus Roskill created this page, on my behalf prior to my return from the Arctic last month.

I have spent the past 5 months in the Arctic on an expedition, in an area with limited charted or named geographical information, many historical navigational inaccuracies etc. Amongst other aspects of the exploration was to carry out seabed surveys and navigational inaccuracies. Even in todays world of satilites and GPS's there are many errors in the Arctic still.

My expedition, through the North West Passage from the Pacific to the Atlantic is well recorded.

The LAT/LONG and description of the bay now named 'Sophie Louise Bay', that Marcus Roskill has added has no known or recorded previous name, and in respect to naming it is being recognised by amongst others the Ocean Cruising Club, the Royal Cruising Club and others - all of who have current and historical links to the naming of previously uncharted or little charted / named locations.

Therefore I am unclear why this claim / wikipedia addition has been deleted?

The short answer is, Wikipedia is not for announcing anything new, or the result only of personal knowledge. A fundamental policy is Wikipedia:Verifiability: "any material challenged or likely to be challenged must be attributed to a reliable, published source". "Reliable" includes an element of independent editorial oversight, so blogs, or a first-hand account such as your log, would not be enough.

Your new place name could only be included once it has been independently documented. I do not know, but will enquire, what would be considered adequate authority to establish a new geographical name.

I am afraid I must now burden you with some Wikipedia bureaucracy. I deleted the article under a process called WP:Proposed deletion intended for uncontroversial deletions, but the rules are that any article deleted in that way shall automatically be restored on request. So I have restored the article; however, since absence of reliable published sources, at least for the immediate future, makes it unacceptable, I have nominated it under another process, WP:Articles for deletion, which will start a debate, lasting normally seven days, at the end of which and uninvolved administrator will decide what to do, basing the decision on the arguments presented, not on a count of heads. The debate is at WP:Articles for deletion/Sophie Louise Bay, and you are welcome to contribute. Read WP:DISCUSSAFD first.

WP:Notability is mentioned there. That is Wikipedia's inclusion criterion, and is is not a matter of opinion but has to be demonstrated by references showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." The test is, have people not connected with the subject thought it significant enough to write substantial comment about? The advantage of that is that, rather than asking "do we think this is important?" it asks the more objective question "Is there evidence that people not connected with this subject think it important?" See WP:Notability (summary).

I am afraid you will now be thinking that this is all much more difficult than you thought. I have explained things at length, because we do not do enough to explain to new users what Wikipedia is not for: it is easy to see it as the ideal place to announce your discover or promote your new name, but that will not work. First the name has to become established; only then can we cover it. Again, we are not deciding what is or is not important; we are waiting for evidence of what unconnected people consider important. Another relevant policy is WP:No original research which includes: "If no reliable third-party sources can be found on a topic, Wikipedia should not have an article about it. I will email you the text so that you can see what is there - not much, and most importantly no references except to the site. This was not only deleted at the AfD, but an appeal was turned down at Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2013 February 9. In each case the keep faction was saying "It's big! It's important!" and the delete faction was saying: "GNG! If it's big and important, show us some independent reliable sources that say so!" and getting no response

After that history, there is no point starting on a rewrite unless you really can show references to significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources. If you can, and want to use any of the existing material, I will undelete/userfy for you to preserve attribution - a bit messy, as it has been overwritten with a redirect which is currently at RfD, but possible.

Unless I find your draft extraordinarily convincing, I would either get you to ask again at DRV with a link to it, or (since DRV would probably say "recreate and relist") go straight to another AFD. I'll think about that. JohnCD (talk) 20:34, 11 November 2013 (UTC)

Hello, this user (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/24.105.217.246) continues persistent vandalism across numerous pages, including many for R&B group TLC and other acts such as Mariah Carey. Please look at the contributions of the user PrincessKannapolis whom you have advises in the past, together with her declaration that she edits on behalf of her client. I have left a very clear note on her talk page about paid advocacy, but am probably standing too close to her work and articles to make a sensible judgment. Even were I an admin I would recuse myself from taking action and ask for other eyes.

She has returned from her 3RR block and is straight back in action massaging her (I do mean 'her') article about her client, a lady who may or may not be notable, but appears not to be to me. Others may disagree.

My concerns is that she is riding a coach and horses through paid COI editing. Your view may vary. I was tempted to take the issue to ANI, but, again, I am standing too close to the matter to be certain that I am reacting impartially. Whether I have always agreed with you in the past or not, and I cannot remember either way, I respect the way you analyse matters, so I am asking you to take a look. @Yunshui: I didn't block because Sigh0402 seemed to be only concerned with deleting everything and removing all trace. However I didn't then notice that he had posted two articles about Covalense after User:Covalense was blocked, so it is certainly block evasion and I would have no objection to blocking and telling him to request unblock on the main account. @Vouzounian2: no, sorry, an encyclopedia is not the place for you to tell the world about your new religion. I have already pointed you to WP:NFT which explains some reasons. The fundamental policy concerned is Wikipedia:No original research, which includes:

"If no reliable third-party sources can be found on a topic, Wikipedia should not have an article about it. If you discover something new, Wikipedia is not the place to announce such a discovery."

Do you have any idea what is leading new users to create subpages at /UserProfileIntro ? Here's an 'everything' search for the term on WP: [7] Less than 25 new users have created the page (not counting deleted pages I cannot see), there are not any older than 11-22-13, and there is no other reference to it anywhere on WP (other than my CSD log). The new users seem too varied to be part of a class, so it's got me puzzled. Across the board the new users appear to think they are creating a user page at the top level, but they create the /UserProfileIntro subpage instead. In any case, that was not an encyclopedia article, it was an election statement: "I support competitive elections... If elected to serve on the Executive Council of the American Political Science Association, I will be guided by three key concerns... " etc. That is not what Wikipedia is for. Andrew Barr deleted page

Hello John, Good day! I see that you have deleted a page about me on Wikipedia: Andrew_Barr_(musician). I did not initiate the page, however it was a very useful tool, especially pertaining to the media and those curious about my accomplishments and current whereabouts. I am a musician, have sold well over 100,000 records in my groups The Barr Brothers and The Slip. The Barr brothers are currently an internationally touring ensemble, a top selling Canadian band and have made multiple national television appearances in the US and Canada. As a drummer I have performed and recorded with such platinum selling artists as Natalie Merchant, Lhasa DeSela, Patrick Watson, Alexi Murdoch, amongst others. I have appeared on Conan O'Brien and David Letterman with my group The Barr Brothers, am currently on Secret City Records and have conducted interviews with several media sources including Rolling Stone Magazine. I have been written about in The New York times amongst others. Not trying to self aggrandize here, just wondering if these accomplishments fall short of a wiki entry. Why my page was taken down I am not sure, but my colleagues and band mates seem to have their info intact and I am asking that mine please be restored. I have had requests for the information to be available on wikipedia as I know it is a trusted source for those doing research on public figures. Thank you. That was nearly three years ago. The whole text of the article was: "Andrew Barr (born May 25, 1977) is a drummer and versatile percussionist best known for his work with The Slip, Surprise Me Mr. Davis and most recently Land of Talk. Originally from Rhode Island, Barr currently resides in Montreal, Quebec. Barr also plays in the Montreal-based band Super Little also known as The Barr Brothers", with no references, so you can see why it was not acceptable.

Wikipedia articles require references, for two reasons: (a) because of the WP:Verifiability policy: "any material challenged or likely to be challenged must be attributed to a reliable, published source", and (b) to establish WP:Notability, the criterion for inclusion, which requires references showing significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources.

I do not advise you to write your own article - that is strongly discouraged - but if you write a brief outline of your career, and list references, I will see what I can do, or get someone else to do. Check out WP:MUSICBIO, the notability standard for musical performers, and give links to references (for notability these need to be independent, i.e. not press releases or your own or your band's website) to show how you meet it. @Melodien: what you could usefully do is write a "lead section". Wikipedia articles are supposed to start with a self-contained section which gives an outline of the subject - see Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Lead section. For a short article like this a single paragraph will be enough. It could be no more than "ABC was an X best known for Y and Z", but preferably a bit more than that.
