Hi John, you have blocked this vandalism account, that used my name from german wikipedia. I'm sysop at german wikipedia (see de:Benutzer:Tröte and User:Troete is my account here. Would you please delete the userpage and the usertalk of the vandal User:Tröte, that links on my german account? I think, this vandal is just a revenge of someone I blocked on german wikipedia. Thank you very much. Greetings, --Troete (talk) 11:37, 20 November 2009 (UTC)

Deletion discussion

Good Morning John! I recently posted my bio http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaughan_lazar and was immediately deleted for reasons of "Copyright Infringement". I am Vaughan Lazar, and I am also the founder, owner et al for Pizza Fusion which hold the trademarks and rights to the source. What additional information would you like from me? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.68.183.221 (talk) 12:34, 20 November 2009 (UTC)

I will reply on your talk page at User talk:Vaughanz, but it will be a few hours before I have time. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 12:57, 20 November 2009 (UTC)

So what should I do? Should I only remove the link of edwinraja.com? Cause I don't need that as well, it's already on Google's #1 for Edwin Raja. Or I couldn't submit that article though? I'm new and really confuse here, too many links, sorry.

Owh by the way John, I recently register here because I want to put information about my self. If it's restricted, you can safely delete my account, no problem. Thanks anyway —Preceding unsigned comment added by Iwingmusic (talkcontribs) 23:34, 20 November 2009 (UTC)

How Do I Retire

Hi I was just wondering how to retire my account at Wikipedia. Nothing against the website or any thing. I just do not like being a member. Sorry if I offended you and the website it is a great place. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Zalar (talkcontribs) 01:06, 21 November 2009 (UTC)

  • There isn't really a way to retire; user accounts don't get deleted. If you no longer want to contribute, just walk away and stop using your account. Then you have the option to come back if you ever want to; but if you don't, no problem. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 09:44, 21 November 2009 (UTC)

Well?!!!

Well John, you're very fast on deletion but not fast enough on answering questions! You didn't answer my questions. You think we're nothing right? You think we only want to drive traffic to our self right? Because sort of sites did answer like you on certain problem. "You need Faceboook not Wiki", "You need Bebo not Wiki", "Wiki is not for you", "You blablabla", "Wiki blablabla". So why don't you recruit workers to do anything you want instead of offering anyone to register with all good words of benefits? You're not informative as an admin. You only tell sort of words with large of links. Maybe you should give us example of writing not just theoretical words. Am I wrong? Look, I just got lost here, no heart feeling. And I just say what I think it's right. Sorry. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Iwingmusic (talkcontribs) 11:02, 21 November 2009 (UTC)

Everyone here is a volunteer, and has other things to do, like sleep: your first message above was at 23:34 my time, and I had gone to bed. You say there that you registered "because I want to put information about my self"; but that is not what Wikipedia is for - it is a collaborative project to build an encyclopedia, and although anyone can edit there are rules about what subjects are suitable. As I explained on your talk page, subjects for articles have to be notable, and people are discouraged from writing articles about themselves. I didn't mention Facebook or Bebo, but those are examples of the sort of site where you can post information about yourself. I'm sorry if a lot of my advice consists of links to Wikipedia guidelines, but so many new articles come in - more than one a minute - that there is not time to write everything out in full each time. Read some of the advice in the Welcome paragraph on your talk page, to learn more about Wikipedia. If you want to stay and be a contributor, you could put some information about yourself on your user-page. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 17:32, 21 November 2009 (UTC)

Ok thank you very much John. You're kind. You didn't mention Facebook or Bebo in my talkpage, I read it in some answers to users. It's up to you to say like that but consider that user could write here with a non standard or confusing tags, don't they know about those sites? Do you have to explain about those sites to them? Lol!. By the way yes my message was 23:34 but it was on 20 November 2009, and you answered Zalar on 21 November 2009, would like to say sorry? lol! Hope success be with you John. Regard. IwingMusic. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Iwingmusic (talkcontribs) 11:02, 21 November 2009 (UTC)

You are perhaps right that we could do more to explain to new users what Wikipedia is for and what it is not for before they write an article; we are keen for everyone to start to contribute, but then they are disappointed when it turns out their articles are not suitable. And yes, you are right, I did not reply to you as soon as I could on the 21st; I started, but then I got distracted by other business. My apologies. Best wishes, JohnCD (talk) 15:42, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

I'm satisfied with your answer now John. I'm sorry, I'll try to learn more next time I want to write again. I have putted four "tilde" characters and it worked, lol! Regards. Iwingmusic (talk) 16:13, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

Question

You have moved the article Hakeem sulaimon to the user page of the article creator. The article he created was obviously about himself. Should autobiographies of unremarkable persons as a rule be moved to the editor's user page rather than be deleted? Amsaim (talk) 21:13, 21 November 2009 (UTC)

  • Yes - see WP:Userfication#Main user page userfication. It's not mandatory, but as long the autobio is reasonably straightforward and suitable for a user page - not wildly promotional or too much of a detailed CV - it is a rather less WP:BITEy way of dealing with a non-notable new user than just zapping it and telling him he's NN. There is a template {{Nn-userfy}} you can put on the author's talk page, but I don't much like it and have developed a form of words of my own, which you can see on his talk page. Mind you, nearly all these people have only come here to write about themselves: I keep a list of ones I have userfied like this, and I once checked back over the last 50, and just 3 had many any further edits that were not about themselves. I still think it's worthwhile in suitable cases. If you do it, remember to put {{db-r2}} on the redirect that gets left behind. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 21:26, 21 November 2009 (UTC)
Thanks very much for the info. Amsaim (talk) 21:29, 21 November 2009 (UTC)

De-tagging of Phiale of Megara

Hi, just for clarification and to avoid misunderstanding: When you de-speedied Phiale of Megara, I take it your remark that the quoted text was legitimate fair use was referring only to the latest version of the article, with only the brief quotation in the footnote? If that's what you meant, I have no quarrel with it. I don't know if you noticed, my original tagging was about an earlier version, prior to cleanup/stubbing-down, when there was much more copied material and a lack of proper attribution. If your remark about fair use was meant to refer to that, then indeed I'd find it quite problematic. Fut.Perf. 11:15, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

  • Yes, my remark was indeed about the current version. I was going to send you a message explaining my de-tagging, but then I realised from the history that the version you tagged was a real copyvio and that it was only Cunard's stubbing that had made the article acceptable. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 14:33, 22 November 2009 (UTC)
    • Okay, thanks for clarifying. I've now got hold of the full original paper by O'Neil and I'm going to expand and correct the article on that basis, so all will be good. Fut.Perf. 16:51, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

Taakatism

Sorry to question an admin's decisions, but putting this in the article incubator is rather a waste of time. The "religion" is patently made up; you don't need to go any further than this. Ironholds (talk) 15:05, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

About deleting my article

I made the article "Peter Ezewuiro" because he is a proffesional gamer that I know through a site called Allisbrawl.com . Youtube is not a reliable source, but anyway, what have computer-game clips called "Street Fighter 3-Akuma(peze1999) vs Ryu(Kareem)" and "Peter (Falco) vs (Luigi) Lee" got to do with proving that someone called Peter Ezewuiro is notable enough to have an article in Wikipedia? Hello John I see your point, I just need some time to re-create my article .... thanks —Preceding unsigned comment added by Edoizzi (talkcontribs) 17:21, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

The article has now been nominated under the Articles for Deletion procedure, which normally takes seven days during which you can continue to work on it: but before you put much effort into it, please read again the guidelines I linked from the article talk page, and also that on Verifiability which requires confirmation from an independent reliable source: "If no reliable, third-party sources can be found for an article topic, Wikipedia should not have an article on it." Hi John, it's me again. Hope you well. I wonder if you control wiki for Indonesia too. I accidentally found article about my kind friend here. How would tell about that? Regards. Iwingmusic (talk) 21:09, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

Wow! I just saw that so many articles from Indonesia that doesn't meet the criteria of wiki. Who controls this? I confuse, again... Regards. Iwingmusic (talk) 21:32, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

Each Wikipedia is independent and has its own rules and standards. I don't know anything about Wikipedia bahasa Indonesia, you would have to find someone there to ask - probably they have something like our WP:Help desk.
You don't need to put a "talkback" tag here when you leave me a message - it is used to tell someone there is a message for him on another page - I shall now put one on your talk page to tell you there is a message for you here. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 21:45, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

Ok John. And I have remove the "talkback". Iwingmusic (talk) 22:08, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

You deleted my page about the band Telacasters. I feel there was no reason for this. I'd like to hear an explanation. I put a lot of time into that page and now its gone without warning. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Justinbivona (talkcontribs) 01:23, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

I am sorry you put a lot of work into the article, but it didn't go without warning - it was not deleted until 23 November, but it was first tagged for speedy deletion at 06:57 on 20 November, and a warning notice placed on your talk page at the same time which explained the reason: that it didn't meet Wikipedia's requirements for what a band needs to have achieved to have an article, explained at Notability (music), in particular the section Criteria for musicians and ensembles. JohnCD (talk) 11:39, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

It was marked for speedy deletion a minute after the article was first was created, and there was no information on the band yet. I went on to finish and complete the article and it met Wikipedia's requirements. I feel the article was wrongfully removed. Could you please undo your deletion? Thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Justinbivona (talkcontribs) 20:30, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

No, I will not undelete your article, because although the first version tagged had little information, the warning on your talk page told you the reason and contained the line: "Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for musical topics." If you read those guidelines it is clear that, unsigned and with one album just self-released on the internet, your band has not (yet) achieved enough to meet Wikipedia's requirements. Also, as you are writing about your own band, see #1 in the List of Bad Article Ideas. Sorry, but you will have to wait until you have reached the standard of WP:BAND; by then probably one of your fans will write an article about you. JohnCD (talk) 22:06, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

I know what the tag said. I looked it up and made sure it met the criteria. Under the criteria for musicians and ensembles, there is a list of 12 criteria. It says "a musician or ensemble may be notable if it meets at least one of the following criteria." Telacasters meet more than one of those. They've been played on the radio, they've been reviewed in the press, they've toured and opened for really big bands in big venues, the individual members alone have been involved in numerous mainstream music projects. How does this not constitute a valid Wikipedia entry?

(a) The notability guideline requires you to show "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject". Significant means actual comment, not just listings; reliable excludes Myspace and such where anyone can post; independent excludes your own Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, which is all the article showed. I had a look - Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL.
(b) Which of the numbered criteria in WP:BAND do you think your band meets?
(you don't need to put a talkback tag here - that's to tell someone there is a message for them on a different page).
JohnCD (talk) 22:56, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

Numbers 4, 11 and 7 for sure. The page was deleted before all the information could be put up. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Justinbivona (talkcontribs) 23:03, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

The article does not demonstrate any of those, but so that this is not my sole decision but involves more editors, I will undelete your article and instead nominate it for deletion under a different process, Articles for Deletion. That will open a debate, normally lasting seven days, where any editor can express a view, and at the end another administrator will review the arguments and decide what to do. You may continue to edit the article, but do not remove the AfD template (the box at the top). You may also give your view in the deletion debate, but please note that this is not a count of votes: the closing administrator will be considering the arguments put forward in terms of Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. In the debate, and on talk pages like this, please sign your messages by ending them with four "tilde" characters ~~~~, which the system will turn into a signature with your username and the time and date, like this: JohnCD (talk) 14:45, 25 November 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for your help. I will be editing the page to help it meet the requirement more thoroughly and I really appreciate you undeleting the article for the time being. Justinbivona (talk) 20:59, 25 November 2009 (UTC)

Engine (boogie-rock band) related articles

Hi, there are some articles related to the Engine (boogie-rock band) article you recently incubated per the AFD discussion. I was wondering if instead of prodding or AFDing these related articles, maybe it would be better to move them to sub-pages of the incubated article at Wikipedia:Article Incubator/Engine (boogie-rock band)? The articles in question are Well Oiled (album), Autowreck (album), Live At Kent 1988, and Engine - Live As Yer Like (Video). I can't see any of them surviving prod/AFD, but they might be worth keeping around while the incubation work is on-going. --Muchness (talk) 18:38, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

Is it ok if i start fresh and finish it today as i have no other things need doing? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Chaz4830 (talkcontribs) 13:10, 26 November 2009 (UTC)

Are you the same person as Tancurrom (talk · contribs) who created the article yesterday? If so, you shouldn't be using two accounts, you might get accused of WP:Sockpuppetry. Choose one account and stick to it. Yes, you can re-create the page, but you will need to show that the subject is notable enough for an encyclopedia article, it didn't look to me as though it was. More information on Tancurrom's talk page, which I'll copy to yours in case you want to use that account. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 13:54, 26 November 2009 (UTC)

He's been vandalizing pages by inserting some misinformation into articles. Please respond ASAP. •  Done - 31 hours, as this IP has no previous blocks. Report to AIV again if it resumes. JohnCD (talk) 09:40, 22 November 2009 (UTC)
Thank you for catching the guy. He has been troubling me as well as other users for almost two years now because he is using the same MO that I mentioned. And he almost always evades any block because he uses different addresses in different ranges. And he always ignores any warnings and messages sent to him. Here are the following addresses he had used from the 202.70.50.* range (particularly 202.70.50.0/24) alone:
Could you do a soft rangeblock on the 202.70.50.0/24? Thanks. BTW, if you want, I can list the other address he had used to see how extensive his vandalism and evasion has come.- 上村七美 (Nanami-chan) | talkback | contribs 09:51, 22 November 2009 (UTC)
I don't think a short-term range block would do much good - he seems to use one IP for a day and then another a few days later; and long-term range blocks are discouraged. As you will see at the top of this page, I am a very new admin; I will ask a second opinion from Black Kite, who I see blocked one of these yesterday. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 10:06, 22 November 2009 (UTC)
Well, I asked him about what I've said, but he didn't respond. I don't know why. But thanks; I'll try to take this matter somewhere else. - 上村七美 (Nanami-chan) | talkback | contribs 10:09, 22 November 2009 (UTC)
He didn't respond because he was asleep - he's on UTC time :) Looking at the contributions from that range, there are very few useful recent contributions - they almost all come from the vandal, and so I have softblocked the range, account creation enabled, for 3 months. Black Kite 10:52, 22 November 2009 (UTC)
Anyway, I've also filed a report on WP:AN/I on what to the vandal has done, as well as some links to archives on previous reports on him, either by me or by NeoChaosX to show how far back his vandalism had troubled people. You can give your input there. - 上村七美 (Nanami-chan) | talkback | contribs 11:17, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

Anyway, thanks for responding. BTW, at what time (GMT) is Black Kite is usually on? It looks like another rangeblock is in order (202.70.54.0/24). - 上村七美 (Nanami-chan) | talkback | contribs 14:05, 27 November 2009 (UTC)

Odd... another admin overturned or just ignored your overturn of my db-repost speedy. Is that how it's supposed to work? Shawn in Montreal (talk) 21:31, 27 November 2009 (UTC)

From his closing comment, he seems to have considered it A7 as much as G4, and I wouldn't argue with that. As a very new admin, I am probably being too cautious. See here for my vacillations on another G4 last night and this morning. I think in each case I was thinking "This has been tidied up a lot and has more references" while the other admin was thinking "It may have been tidied up but the refs are no good and the changes don't address the reason why it was deleted last time". It depends how you interpret the words "substantially identical." I restored the other one in the end because I thought it had a chance, though it seems to be going down the tubes at the new AfD: I don't think this one has a WP:SNOW chance. IMO, direct block and create-protect that article was enough. Bald Freak Music page deleted?

Hello John....it appears as if the page I created (many months ago) for indie record label Bald Freak Music has been deleted by you. I created the page using a different user name, which I no longer recollect, so I have created a new account in order to contact you and have the page restored. Bald Freak Music is a legitimate record label, an LLC with half a dozen artists on its roster, including Ron 'Bumblefoot' Thal of Guns N' Roses and Chris Pennie of Coheed and Cambria. Can you tell me why the page was deleted and what we can do about getting it restored? Thank you. Secretron (talk) 13:21, 28 November 2009 (UTC)Ron

Pied

Hi John,

In the discussion you quoted, I stated that both Pieing and Piebald were valid targets for Pied and there were no objections. The user who suggested that Pied be turned into a soft redirect stated that "an alternative would be to redirect it to Piebald," and again, there were no objections. A redirect to Piebald is preferable to a soft redirect to Wiktionary because if a user is searching on Wikipedia, it is likeliest that the user is looking for an article, not a dictionary definition. Considering that there are two articles on Wikipedia which are valid targets for Pied, redirecting to Wiktionary is not the best solution. The Piebald article discusses the term "pied" and equates the two terms; do you have any sources which demonstrate that the two are such disparate terms that they should not be discussed on the same article?

Neelix (talk) 14:27, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

Fortunately I can get at the OED online:
  • pied
1. a. Originally of a friar's habit: black and white. Now chiefly of a mammal: = PIEBALD adj. 2.
1. b. Marked, dappled, speckled with (a colour or, in extended use, some other thing).
2. fig. Variable, inconstant; flawed. Now rare.
  • piebald
1. Chiefly derogatory. Composed of differing or incongruous parts; motley, mixed.
2. Of a horse or other animal: having black and white patches; pied; (more widely) having patches of other colours, particoloured (rare). Cf. SKEWBALD adj.
3. In extended use: of two contrasting dark and pale colours.
Clearly substantial overlap - meaning 1a of pied equated with meaning 2 of piebald - but by no means synonyms. What is your problem with leaving in a Wikt soft-redirect as well as a pointer to Piebald? In fact I'd be inclined to add "see also Pieing" giving the earnest enquirer three one-click links to further information. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 22:40, 29 November 2009 (UTC)
The page you are suggesting, a soft redirect to Wiktionary with a "See also" section including Piebald and Pieing, is practically the same as having a standard disambiguation page listing the two entries (Piebald and Pieing) and a Wiktionary link on the right-hand side. Would you consider such a disambiguation page an acceptable compromise? Neelix (talk) 22:47, 29 November 2009 (UTC)
Yes, I'd be happy with that - I'm going to bed now, you do it if you like or else I will in the morning. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 22:51, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

My Page

Thank you for your detail.

  • In regards to the first point you made:
    • I understand that a reference to my name must appear. However, on most of the links to Memphis Jewish High School my name is clearly listed as "Alex Nahon". As for the theaters, I will check into the location of a cast list, though the show Evita was done before the theater had a website so I doubt that it is anywhere online.
  • In regards to the second point you made, I meet two of the three requirements:
    • Has had significant roles in multiple notable films, television shows, stage performances, or other productions.
      • I have performed in the film 21 Grams and in the off-Broadway production of Sister Mary Ignatius Explains it all for You. In addition, I did a voice over for two episodes of Blues Clues. I am also a puppeteer for a national organization called Kids on the Block.
    • Has a large fan base or a significant "cult" following.
      • I do not have a large fan base. As a puppeteer and theater technician/designer, I am rarely seen by the public.
    • Has made unique, prolific or innovative contributions to a field of entertainment.
      • I am in the process of developing a joystick operated spotlight system that is controlled from a Mac, something many technicians have wanted.
      • Working with Kids on the Block, I have made changes in the lives of a few children with Down syndrome. Though I have not affected many, just one is important.
  • In regards to the third point:
    • After reading this, it has become clear why autobiographies are not allowed. If I write an article on my sister (who has done much, much more than I) is that acceptable?
  • In regards to the fourth point:
    • I have seen what can happen when people put wrongful information on Wikipedia. Just the other day, I saw someone write their name in the middle of a paragraph on Napoleon, and then when it was removed, I was reading the same article, they put it back again. So by creating the article, being one of its editors (not an author), I can set a starting point as to where the article should go. Plus with the help of administrators, I can keep false information away, not biased information but information such as dates, names, places, and other pieces of information that could be changed and made false.

Again thank you for your help and detail, and I hope to hear from you soon.

---Abn3566 (talk) 21:02, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

Even autobiography is not forbidden, only strongly discouraged, and likely to lead to particularly close checking of references and notability. The anonymous nature of Wikipedia accounts means there is no way to actually prohibit it. In writing about your sister you would still from our point of view have a conflict of interest. You would have to be very careful that everything you wrote was written from a neutral point of view and confirmed by reliable independent references. Read these guidelines (I am sorry to point you to so many impersonal guidelines, but it saves writing everything out at length every time):
In regard to your own article, I'm sorry, but I don't agree that you meet WP:ENTERTAINER. Significant roles in multiple notable films etc. and unique, prolific or innovative contributions mean more than you have achieved. I advise you not to put your article in again.

deletion of new page

Hi John,

I'm a new Wikipedia editor, still learning the ropes, and believe you may have deleted the page I was just creating for the web series Living With The Infidels.

I was just about to add a series of references but found the page already deleted. Living With The Infidels was probably the most talked about web series of the year by the British mainstream press, featured everywhere from The Sun, The Guardian and Radio 4 to Al Jazeera and an Australian TV talk show). It also recently won best web series of 2009 at the http://www.festival-4ecrans.eu/. So I believe warrants a mention.

I realise I hadn't yet included any of the references to the above when creating the page, but trust you'll understand I'm a newcomer. Would you be able to reinstate the page?

Regards,

Why did you delete a page?

You recently deleted the topic 'Big Holly' Which was written about a lesser known actress. The article seemed fine please explain why it was deleted. Thank you —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jennanizors (talkcontribs) 18:00, 30 November 2009 (UTC)

  • Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a gossip column. Our policy on Biographies of living persons is that: "Contentious material about living persons that is unsourced or poorly sourced—whether the material is negative, positive, or just questionable—should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion." JohnCD (talk) 18:15, 30 November 2009 (UTC)

Big Holly

Sorry I still don't understand why the topic was a gossip column thanks much for replying. It contained details about an actress? There wasn't anything which was offensive. Hopefully there will be more sources to prove the article in late 2010 when she appears on her next acting part. Please provide some more links or information of how to write articles properly Many thanks Jennanizors (talk) 19:27, 30 November 2009 (UTC)

So much of it was about her relationships, her feelings, her friends. An encyclopedia article should be about facts - who she is, what she has done - and they should be referenced from reliable sources. The Welcome paragraph on your talk page has links to good advice about how to write articles - start with Your First Article, and there are links on from there to more advice. Also read the policy on WP:Biographies of living persons. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 23:10, 30 November 2009 (UTC)

Do you care to explain to me why you deleted the article I contributed?

I am trying to provide the page Murwillumbah with facts about the local area.

I created the page ISKCON New Govardhana Hare Krishna Community.

A tag was placed on it for speedy deletion and I contested the tag with the word hangon .

Please explain to me what would be required to prove why the subject is important or significant. I believe you acted too fast without giving me time to respond.

I will be happy to provide relevance and signifigance, if I know what you are looking for.

Please communicate, before deleting content.

UNL College of Journalism and Mass Communications

I do not understand why the College of Journalism and Mass Communications page was deleted. What does it mean by non-notable J-school?

There has never been an article with that title - can you tell me the exact title of the article you are asking about? JohnCD (talk) 16:35, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

It's the College of Journalism and Mass Communications (University of Nebraska–Lincoln)that was deleted November 19th. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.93.158.228 (talk) 16:53, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

That article was deleted under the Proposed Deletion procedure - a notice was placed on it, the user who created the page, User:JFlyUNL, was notified, and there were seven days during which any editor could object. The grounds for deletion were lack of notability, a Wikipedia term, shorthand for "Of enough importance and significance to merit an encyclopedia article". That is not a subjective judgement, but is measured by whether a subject has "received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject". Significant means substantial comment, more than just listings; reliable excludes blogs, Myspace and sites where anyone can post what they like; independent excludes the subject's own website and affiliated ones. More detail at Notability (organizations and companies}.
Although precedent is not necessarily binding, the precedent established in previous deletion discussions, documented at WP:OUTCOMES#Education, is that:

Departments or degree programs within a university, college, or school are not notable unless they have made significant contributions to their field (e.g., University of Chicago Department of Economics), or produced a number of notable graduates (USC School of Cinematic Arts, Oxford PPE).

You can find useful information at Wikipedia:College and university article guidelines.
PROD is intended for uncontroversial deletions so, if you wish, I will undelete the article. I would then notify the user who nominated it, and he may start a different procedure, Articles for deletion, which would involve a discussion lasting seven days during which any user can give their views; then an administrator will decide what to do, based on the arguments advanced, not on the number of votes.
Regards, JohnCD (talk) 17:53, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

I would like the article to be undeleted and I would like to add/edit information on the page so that it is a reliable source of information and make sure that it is notable. How should I go about doing this?

Very well, I have undeleted the article: it is at College of Journalism and Mass Communications (University of Nebraska–Lincoln). Before you put a lot of work into it, make sure that you can actually find the independent references needed to establish notability. I guess that you are connected with the school, which from Wikipedia's point of view gives you a conflict of interest: a good way is to follow the advice in User:Uncle G/On notability#Writing about subjects close to you:

When writing about subjects that are close to you, don't use your own personal knowledge of the subject, and don't cite yourself, your web site, or the subject's web site. Instead, use what is written about the subject by other people, independently, as your sources. Cite those sources in your very first edit. If you don't have such sources, don't write.

For other advice, look at:
Also, if you are going to do much editing, I strongly suggest that you register an account, which is easy and free.

Deletion review for Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal

An editor has asked for a deletion review of Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal. Because you closed the deletion discussion for this page, speedily deleted it, or otherwise were interested in the page, you might want to participate in the deletion review. Aisha9152 (talk) 22:07, 30 November 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for notifying me: I have commented there. JohnCD (talk) 23:02, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
you're welcome. although you may have undeleted the other pages though you still haven't unmerged the article i was talking about. maybe you missed it. Aisha9152 (talk) 15:42, 1 December 2009 (UTC)
The point of "tempundelete" is to let people see the articles during the DRV. The merged one is still visible anyway, through the history. JohnCD (talk) 15:46, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

hi again. i should apologize because it seems i should have asked you first about this instead of going to deletion review, but i was following what was said to me here [1]. anyway is there any chance you can unmerge the bumblefoot page and start a discussion on the talk page for the article? i am not sure of the correct procedure but [Wikipedia:Non-deleting deletion discussions] seems to say that this is a good place to start. i would appreciate it. also i will be able to help clean up the article. Aisha9152 (talk) 17:08, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

No need to apologise: Wikipedia's rules and procedures are too complex for anyone to be expected to get them all right. In fact I feel apologetic because the DRV did not from your point of view give a conclusive result, and I must admit that I was not aware of WP:ND3 to which the admin who closed the DRV pointed us, nor was I clear whether you were arguing only to reverse the merge decision or also to undelete the other articles.
WP:ND3 suggests that you should start a discussion on the article talk page to try to get a consensus to reverse the merge decision. It seems to me that it would be easier to get that consensus if you could show an improved article, rather than saying "it should be unmerged because it could be improved". So I have copied the article, as it was pre-merge, into a useful new invention called the Article Incubator, where you and anyone else who wants to help can work on it. You will find it at Wikipedia:Article Incubator/Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal.
What I am not sure about is the procedure to follow after it has been improved. The community has fairly firmly said "merge" and declined the opportunity to reverse that: if I had to make a decision now, I would say that, before being returned to the mainspace, the revised article should once again go through a formal AfD; but I will take advice about that.
Regards, JohnCD (talk) 21:31, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
  • thanks for your response. i just looked at the afd here [2] . i only see two votes really, and i didnt get to vote. is 2 vs 1 really consensus? i dont think anyone who knows bumblefoot was paying attention since it wasnt listed under his name. i didnt notice it myself until it was too late! also once its deleted it is pretty scary and a LOT of effort as i am learning to undo it, which is why i think no one else has said anything. id rather not have all the responsibility for cleaning up the article. i actually think its a lot cleaner thanks to spike. there was really only one merge vote and one "ok fine merge it", but you actually removed almost the entire article in the merge. i ask that you please reconsider as i dont have a lot of time for wikipedia, in fact this headache is discouraging me from doing any more editing on it! Aisha9152 (talk) 21:36, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
There was Wilbury as a possible keep, happy to go with merge, and Watson for merge, but don't forget the other two voices, RadioFan as nominator and Cynof, both saying "delete all". Yes, they said that before Wilbury improved the article but I'm sure they were watching the debate and they could have chipped in again if they wanted. There is no way you could claim a consensus to keep the article, or even "no consensus" about keeping it. The debate ran its full seven days and was listed on Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Music - the whole debate appears on that list, for anyone scanning down it, and many people will have scanned it there or on the main day's list, and could have intervened if they had wanted to.
Anyway, that was my assessment of the result as closing admin, and DRV was the court of appeal which could have told me I'd got it wrong, but did not.
As far as improving the merge goes, anyone who likes can add more information about Bumblefoot to the GNR article, that's just normal editing; but if it is a question of reintroducing a stand-alone article, the only way that will happen is when someone is interested enough to do the work of producing an improved one and arguing it through. I will leave the article in the Incubator, anyway - it gets to stay there a month by the normal process.
Regards, JohnCD (talk) 22:31, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
i dont agree that those users would have paid attention after their first look at it because the probably just look at the music discussion list. also, the afd discussion was decided to be the wrong place to discuss whether to overturn. i think the consensus was very weak but you are not going to listen apparently. this is just too much work and its not worth it. sorry. Aisha9152 (talk) 23:02, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

John, thanks for closing Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Engine (boogie-rock band) as incubate! Per this discussion on my talk page, I believe that there are enough reliable sources to establish that Engine is notable. Cheers, Cunard (talk) 08:19, 3 December 2009 (UTC)

Hello,

I noticed you added this article to the incubator following the AfD. I appreciate the jesture, but I think the decision is wrong. The AfD did technically indicate it might be a redirect, but due to it being a combo-AfD mostly on a somewhat-related record company that conclusion was wrong. (The number of opinions specifically on Bumblefoot was insufficient to form a proper consensus in any case).

A quick search indicates clear notability. If the article had its own AfD, I am quite confident it would be a keep.

Given this, are you OK with me simply undoing the redirect (possibly with an edit summary that says anyone who disagrees is welcome to seek a proper AfD)?

Thanks, ThaddeusB (talk) 04:28, 4 December 2009 (UTC)

P.S. I have read the other discussion you've had on this and realize the history whole situation here, however the right thing to do is restore the article and seek a proper AfD if demanded. --ThaddeusB (talk) 04:45, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
I'm fine with whatever decision. Frankly, I'd like to stop thinking about it. :) --Spike Wilbury (talk) 05:18, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
I too am thoroughly tired of the whole thing, and if after reading all the discussions you decide to revert the merge, I will not wheel-war or make a drama, and in fact will simply wash my hands of it with some relief; but I don't think it would be right because:
  • The search you have done pops up lots of references to him in connection with GNR; the issue, discussed by JamesBWatson at the AfD in proposing "merge", is whether he has independent notability,
  • As I explained to Aisha above, I do not think the consensus of the AfD could have been interpreted as "Keep Thal", or even "No consensus re Thal",
  • The DRV considered the whole AfD and, though it was ruled to be not the right forum to challenge the merge, nobody suggested the close was wrong; only one contributor (Tony Fox) expressed some doubt about Thal and said he would think about it, but did not come back to change his opinion,
  • I don't think that community decisions, arrived at and reviewed by due process, should be overturned by IAR in response to extended complaints, without any new evidence, by those who disagree.
This seems to me exactly the right use for the Incubator - an article which has been decided to be not encyclopedia-worthy in its present form, but which its supporters say can be made so. What's wrong with letting it stay in the Incubator until it has actually been improved? If independent notability is so clear, that should be quick and easy (though Spike looked for evidence and did not find it); if half the effort that has been put into complaining about the decision had been devoted to actually finding evidence and improving the article, there should by now be no doubts about it.
However, if you think undoing the redirect is the right thing to do, go ahead, and I will not complain further.
Regards, JohnCD (talk) 14:20, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
Sorry to have bothered you on this matter again... Normally, I would just improve the article & not worry about it. The only reason I said something if the article had like 100 incoming links and I can't work on it immediately (working on a couple others currently). I don't really contest your reading of the AfD, just the result. Combo-AfDs are, by nature, incapable of handling anything but the clearest "delete all" cases fairly. The reason is that when one is presented say 5 related topics, the normal reaction is not to investigate each carefully but instead just say "delete all" or "keep all" based on an investigation of the first one or two topics, or worse yet a personal opinion about the nature of the articles in question as a whole.
I'm sure you are tired of arguing notability, so I'll keep this super brief. He is independently notable because stories have been written about him. True, if he had never joined GNR this wouldn't have happened most likely, but he did & the stories followed. Stories like 'Tapping into genius: Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal's innovative two-handed techniques' and 'In Search of ... Bumblefoot' are clearly about him, even if the first line mentions he is the lead guitarist of GNR.
Again, sorry to be a pain. I just saw a situation that I felt needed corrected (through no fault of your own) and was trying to approach it in the best manner possible. ThaddeusB (talk) 20:03, 4 December 2009 (UTC)

Beta testing

Hi John. I'm currently writing an editing tool for deletion tagging, WikiAlerter. At the moment I'm looking for some users to do a bit of testing for me, as I haven't (and in some cases can't) use all the functions myself. This would basically involve using the program from time to time, being prepared for it to mess up on you, and reporting any errors to me :). If you were willing to do so, this would be very helpful, but feel free to say no :). If you do decide to, please email me (so I have your email to send the program to). Hello. I was wondering what the fastest way to find mistakes on WP is. D'you know? Paperfork 15:12, 4 December 2009 (UTC)

Never mind. That's something I should ask the reference desk. Don't bother answering. Paperfork 15:16, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
Actually I have one suggestion, if you are looking for things you can correct: Wikipedia:Lists of common misspellings gives links to lists of common mis-spellings from which you can search to find articles which use them and may need correction. Read WP:TYPO first - there are some pitfalls like English vs. US spelling. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 16:15, 4 December 2009 (UTC)

Ohai

I know you're new as an admin, so let me offer you a piece of advice. I saw that you declined a AIV request on Dutchboydan, because he hadn't been warned enough. While you should definitely decline some cases like these, a case where the user has made multiple edits of a vandalistic nature, you should block them, whether or not they have been warned. Just use your common sense and make sure to think of IAR. If you have any questions feel free to ask! Have a great day, Coffee // have a cup // ark // 23:39, 5 December 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the tip. What I saw was that he had been warned at 17:52, 54, 55, 56 and had not edited since 17:55, five hours before the AIV report; but given no constructive edits I guess nothing lost and perhaps something gained by blocking. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 11:23, 6 December 2009 (UTC)

  • Hello sir, if I may butt in here... Only policies are in place for your protection and ours. We only allow material that can be verified by third parties to prevent untruths from filling the encyclopedia. If we didn't have this policy, someone could find your article and write "John P. is well known for being ugly and smelly. In 2008 he robbed a local convenience store and is currently on the run from the police." Without a policy to prevent untruths, we'd have to leave that info intact, which could cause you real world harm. So yes, we don't allow information we can't be verified, but you really wouldn't want it any other way. --ThaddeusB (talk) 17:06, 6 December 2009 (UTC)

Thank you in advance for your respond --Amaris2010 (talk) 14:07, 9 December 2009 (UTC)

Gaming Trend Page Deletion

Re: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Gaming_Trend_%282nd_nomination%29

For reasons that should be fairly obvious, the readers at GiantBomb.com have come after our Wikipedia page. Despite personally clearing the air with Geff Gerstman, his readers have caused you to delete our page. Admittedly, our page needed to be updated (we have accolades beyond being listed on several prominent sites), but using things like Alexa ratings and a misstep by one of my editors isn't much of a case for deletion. I'd like the page restored - is this something you can do, or can you direct me to the appropriate person please?

Thank you,

Deleting article macolmedia

Good day JohnCD!

Im the owner of the article macolmedia. that article is all about on my website macolmedia. The information and the images on that article is owned by me. im begging to you please restore my article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macolmedia

Thank you Michael Ramos owner macolmedia —Preceding unsigned comment added by Macolmedia (talkcontribs) 04:09, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and does not expect to have articles about every web-site - or about every person, company, band... In order to have an article, something needs to be Notable - click on that for an explanation, and on Notability (web) for more details. Also, in writing about your own website you have a conflict of interest - the WP:FAQ/Organizations will tell you more. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 15:53, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

Copyright material

Sorry about the BRYAN Joseph Francis jr. page. I was unaware of the copyright infringement. The exact same paragraph exists on wikipedia's FBI top ten most wanted for that year. Someone else copied it in the first place. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dsmith77 (talkcontribs) 15:20, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

Thanks - I've deleted it from there as well. Even if it were not copyright, I'm not so much gory detail is really material for an encyclopedia - see WP:Notability (criminal acts)#Perpetrators: "A perpetrator of a high-profile crime does not automatically qualify as being notable enough to have a stand-alone article." RE: Speedy deletion declined: Neidermeyer's Mind (album)

Thank you for a prompt reply regarding this matter. If you looked a little deeper, however, you would note that this article has 3 sources. 2 sources are not reliable (being a public forum and a torrent download), and the other is questionable at best (being a Wikipedia-like database of community-submitted information). In other words, I could easily eliminate these sources from the article. If I did so, would I be able to re-submit the article for speedy deletion? Thanks again. The Guy (edits) 01:13, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

I agree the sourcing is still weak, but re-reading the AfD, I'm inclined to suggest a merge, maybe with Korn discography or Korn 1994 album) where three of the songs reappear - if they are an important band and this was the demo they used to get a deal, it's part of their history. Admin help

Hello. I need some help from an administrator, please. I recently found out that both my User Page and my Talk Page were recently deleted. I contacted the administrator who deleted one of these pages, inquiring about this. The administrator is User:Jac16888. Our discussion can be found on his Talk Page, which is located at User talk:Jac16888#Deleted Account - User:Joseph A. Spadaro. In my opinion, his replies were not helpful to me ... and he never, in fact, replied to the actual substantive follow-up questions that I was asking. Hence, I am posting this request for help of another administrator. Please help me in this matter. Thank you. (64.252.115.254 (talk) 15:13, 11 December 2009 (UTC))

His edit here seems to be a resolution to the issue. Chris Rocen (talk) 16:10, 11 December 2009 (UTC)
I have restored your user and talk pages. You will now need to post an {{unblock}} request; before doing that, you should read the Wikipedia:Guide to appealing blocks. JohnCD (talk) 16:24, 11 December 2009 (UTC)
Thank you. (64.252.115.254 (talk) 18:53, 11 December 2009 (UTC))

Userfy?

Hi John, could yo userfy Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116 for me, when you have a chance? It'll make for an excellent start to an article about the Sweedish naming laws, and the edit history certainly shouldn't be lost there. Thanks.
V = I * R (talk to Ω) 11:22, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

Done here. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 11:53, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
Thanks! Incidentally, is the talk page something that should be kept with it? Is that even possible?
V = I * R (talk to Ω) 12:29, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
Sorry, I intended to userfy the talk page too, but must have fumbled it. Now done. If you use significant content from the page in a new article, you will need to preserve the attribution somehow - see Help:merging; I'm not expert at this, but let me know if you need assistance. JohnCD (talk) 12:52, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
Thanks again! I started simply rewriting it actually, which is why I wanted the original (attribution). All it needs is a slight shift in focus, I think. The Swedish naming laws are certainly notable, to me... take a look at the article now, and let me know what you think (it's not "done" yet, but you should see the track that I'm on). I've never actually done this before, so I'm no expert either, but this seemed interesting and relatively easy to "rescue" so I figured that I'd take a shot.
V = I * R (talk to Ω) 13:04, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

Do you think Wikipedia:Article Incubator/Engine (boogie-rock band) has enough reliables sources to establish notability? I have removed the unreliable sources from the article and added the reliable sources from Flickr to the article.

Much of the information in the article is unsourced and it appears unlikely that it can ever be sourced. Should the unsourced information be removed? Thanks, Cunard (talk) 08:16, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

John, do you have any input on this? Cunard (talk) 01:07, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
Sorry for delay replying. They've worked so hard, I'm inclined to let them have it - it's better than a lot of band articles, and it's historical rather than self-promotion of an "up-and-coming" one. I'll "graduate" it tomorrow. Now, there were a set of album articles, weren't there - what happened to them? I should think they should probably be redirected to this, I doubt if they have stand-alone notability. JohnCD (talk) 22:07, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
Yes, I see too many non-notable garage bands on Wikipedia and too few historical ones. I've replied to your message on my talk page. Cunard (talk) 22:51, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

Deletion of Tau Omega Mu Fraternity and its Ladies' Circle article

Hi there. The article 'Tau Omega Mu,' which I started, has just been deleted. It was just momemts ago that I noticed that the article has been tagged as a candidate for speedy deletion, and after refreshing the page, it was gone. I was planning to put the hang on tag but was too late for it. Is there anything that I could do to bring back the article and then change it in accordance with Wikipedia's policies? I'm a newbie here, your help would be very much appreciated. Thanks! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Delajoker (talkcontribs) 16:12, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

File for deletion

Hi John - I'm not familiar with the speedy deletion criteria for files such as photos, but I assume that a picture of a minor taken on a cellphone and uploaded to wikipedia is likely cause for immediate deletion? The file can be found here. I didn't want to take my question to a noticeboard as I figured the less eyes the better. Cheers, --Jezebel'sPonyoshhh 16:06, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

It doesn't seem desirable to have a picture of a named minor, but I don't know of any relevant policy or see any speedy criterion that fits, and it's not very urgent as it has been here since March - it was evidently uploaded for use with an article that got deleted. I have listed it here at WP:FFD, which seems the best thing to do. JohnCD (talk) 17:13, 16 December 2009 (UTC)
Thank you kindly. --Jezebel'sPonyoshhh 17:47, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

What change did you make, username 1? and what browser are you using? It looks just the same as before to me on Firefox, and it was a standard {{uw-3block}} template - it's worrying if it isn't showing up. (e/c with Spitfire) - Spitfire, what change did you just make to the template definition? I'm baffled. JohnCD (talk) 21:12, 16 December 2009 (UTC)
We both put the body of the template a line below <div class="user-block"> as opposed to on the same line, not sure why this would make a difference but according to username 1 it does. I'm using IE, both versions look the same to me too. SpitfireTally-ho! 21:16, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

Yes. I'm convinced my browser was taking me to an old revision of the page even though i tried refreshing multiple times. username 1 (talk) 21:47, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

Yes, you get odd cache-ing effects sometimes - I once had a long argument about a page deleted as copyvio - they said, the web-page has a GFDL release; I said, no, I'm looking at it and it hasn't; they said, yes it has... and it turned out they had added it shortly before and my cache hadn't caught up. Under-16 footballers

I left this on Sameed786's talk but will post it here too in case it's more convenient for you; I saw all those articles from their beginnings, and John, originally these characters were described as Pakistani gangsters who were knifing each other with shivs, then they were changed to international football superstars, and then they were downgraded to under-16 nobodies. A quick Google search on the names turned up pretty much nothing but Facebook pages. That's why I hoax-tagged them, although especially for the later incarnations I'm sure it wasn't really obvious on the face of it. --Glenfarclas (talk) 22:30, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

Yes, I saw there was a complex history, and I'm not criticising your tagging at all; my note to the articles' author was to explain to him why even his final, innocuous versions about under-16 footballers still had to go. Cheers, JohnCD (talk) 22:36, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

John CD, it's very important

That the page you just edited remains unedited, It's very importnt to me. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.3.143.167 (talk) 16:01, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

Declined unblock requests must not be removed from talk pages - see WP:BLANKING - while the block is in force. That IP's block has expired by now, so if the user likes to remove the block warning he can - it's still visible in the history. But it should not be replaced with a phoney unblock-agreed notice. hello john i am editor and writer in jordan news papers and magazines i am 55 years , i have long experience in the editing business

i start new here in Wikipedia i try to write few articles in English, and Mohammed Sami Abugoush is my first, i write few info each day but articles is not fast food read when we are hungry to read, and Wikipedia is my favorer site.

Logan Stanton Article Deletion

Why did you delete the article on Logan Stanton? Logan Stanton is a notable model. Google her name and find all sorts of results. Jotorious (talk) 23:05, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

I deleted it because it was nonsense. Extracts:

Logan was born during France's pre-industrial revolution in the 18th century. Confusingly enough, she was born in Greenland. She spent most of her childhood years trying to hone her finger painting skills... Logan was informed that role would require being bilingual, to which she adamantly claimed would be impossible because she had never even kissed a girl... Logan is best known for being the only octagon girl to double as a security guard at UFC events when they are short handed, and stealing mouth guards from fighters between rounds, because she gets bored easily.

There may be an article to be written about Logan Stanton, but this wasn't it. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 23:13, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

cryptographic hash

I should be a little more clear:I would like to give you the words that make up my hash, so if needed, you can verify with those that I am who I say I am. Paperfork 13:47, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
Yes, certainly, I will store them away and produce on demand. My only reservation is that I don't necessarily guarantee to be around at any particular future time. Bumblefoot, article restoration

Hey John, thanks for restoring the article about Ron Thal. I'm glad you did that and I'm gonna look into it for improvements. Actually, I was mailed by Ron Thal himself about a discussion going on at his forum regarding the wiki, and he sent me the original txt with the article written by himself. He couldn't publish it because it would be deleted so I did him a favor to just put it up as soon as I could. I knew about the article in the incubator, but had no idea how to restore it (I'm a newbie to wikipedia). I hope you understand what I did. And if you can help me improve the article with sources, I have friends to search around and contact with Ron himself to get the info necessary like citations. Copyright issues

Hi. :) If you decline a WP:CSD#G12, unless copyvio concerns seem unfounded, please blank it for listing at WP:CP. If you just remove the speedy, there's a chance that the tagger will not follow up, and we may wind up continuing publication of a copyright infringement after it has been pointed out to us. I've done it with Albert–Brauer–Hasse–Noether theorem (I'm watching User talk:Ozob due to that contributor's assistance with a WP:CCI), so this is just a request for future situations. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 19:02, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. I forgot to list it at CP. :D (Bot picks those up, but better not to take the chance.) (Notifying Delforn may not be useful; he has blanked all such warnings. He is the subject of said WP:CCI: Wikipedia:Contributor copyright investigations/Henry Delforn) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 19:43, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Thanks. I have added the messages from the template to WP:CC and to the author's talk page. What happens now? It seems to me that if the "History" paragraph which is the copyvio were removed, what remained would be a valid stub article, and the author could be invited to expand it in his own words. That's what I was thinking of doing next - shall I do it, and would that be sufficient action to remove the copyvio template and to delist it at WP:CP? (post edit-conflict) Ha! I didn't realise into what a swamp I had stepped. But I still think there's a valid stub there. JohnCD (talk) 19:54, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
Yes, it's pretty messy, all right. :/ The biggest danger with simply removing the identified passage is that the introduction may also violate copyright, from a source we have not yet detected. :) He's created a good many articles which are a pastiche of copyrighted material from multiple sources. That said, I don't like deleting valid content, either, even though presumptive deletion is supported by policy at Wikipedia:Copyright violationss. The introduction is only four sentences long, and I've just done a quick text search at google and google books to at least see if I can determine a paste point (he frequently cites the source he copies, but sometimes cites other sources instead). I didn't find anything, so I would think stubbing this could be enough to resolve it at CP. If you do, please add {{subst:cclean}} to the talk page to help clarify the removal and prevent inadvertent reintroduction. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 20:03, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
Right, I've done that. I checked passages from the intro against Scholar as well, but no match. JohnCD (talk) 20:36, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
Great! One less to deal with in 7 + 1 days when the CP cycles around. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 20:37, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

Just to let you know in case you are monitoring your deletion log: You just appropriately WP:CSD#U1ed a couple user pages, which I have now restored. That user retired for three weeks, and just requested that I restore the pages I originally deleted for the same reason. Conveniently, the restored versions still had the perfectly valid deletion requests. I brought them back, but this time remembered to remove the requests. That is totally my bad - sorry for creating extra work for you. - 2/0 (cont.) 00:23, 22 December 2009 (UTC)

No problem - I saw that they had recently been restored and was slightly puzzled, but thought the user was probably just indecisive. JohnCD (talk) 10:32, 22 December 2009 (UTC)

Deletion of dealgroupmedia UK Ltd

I'd like to contest the lightning deletion of the article I posted about dealgroupmedia just now. The relevance was that dgm was the 1st company of it's in the UK to enter this market. deletion of James Potter and the Iron Phoenix.

Why was my page deleted? —Preceding unsigned comment added by CharlieBoneOurSeries (talkcontribs) 18:14, 29 December 2009 (UTC)

Because it gave no indication that this "internet novel", which is only just starting to come out, is Notable enough to have a Wikipedia article. That is not a matter of opinion but needs to be demonstrated by showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." Significant means more than just listing-type mentions; reliable excludes Myspace, blogs, places where anyone can post anything; independent excludes the subject's own website and affiliated ones and press releases. It's unlikely that anything will have attracted enough independent comment to be notable until it has been out for some time: Wikipedia only reports on established things, it is not in the business of helping to promote new ones. More advice about contributing in the Welcome paragraph on your talk page. JohnCD (talk) 18:25, 29 December 2009 (UTC)

You don't need to do anything - the only article you posted has already been deleted, and the only image you uploaded to Commons didn't have the right copyright information, so it will be deleted automatically in seven days. But don't be discouraged - read some of the links from the Welcome paragraph on your talk page to learn more about Wikipedia. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 20:57, 29 December 2009 (UTC)

Deletion of Howard James Reekie page

I was about to add the detail onto this page as to the production company tie in to the production of Kingdom of the Spiders II, as Porthollywood was written about and a link to Igo Kantor and Howard Reekie was incorporated in the Kingdom of the Spiders page. I feel this is significant information and do not understand why you deleted the page. Please explain - I have read the (A7: Article about an eligible subject, which does not indicate the importance or significance of the subject) and still no not understand, as a sequel movie is significant and the producers of such. If not why is the article on the original even on Wiki. Thanks.

Your article did not make it clear that it was about a comic-strip - I thought it was an attack on a real person called Dhruv Patel. I see that you have put it in again, but another editor has redirected it to the Toronto Star. That is probably best, because I doubt if the comic strip is notable enough to have its own article - see WP:Notability for what that means. Perhaps you could put a short mention of it into the Toronto Star article. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 14:33, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

Unblock-en-l

After a request on Unblock-en-l I have reduced your block of Wobclub (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) to one month. Despite their apology, they may of course, simply resume vandalism after the one month break. Fred Talk 01:08, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

No problem - seemed to be a vandalism-only account, but maybe it was just New-Year's Eve high spirits, and if they're apologetic certainly they should have another chance. I'll keep an eye. JohnCD (talk) 11:02, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

Phabi

Hi John, I was in the process of editing the Phabi article and had placed a hangon tag under the speedy. Please see the talk page. Since it's not a subject I care a lot about (just newpage patrolling) I don't think I want to make the effort anymore, but there is now an orphaned talk page.--Torchwood Who? (talk) 14:41, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

I was just writing to you about it when my message bar lit up - I think your "hangon" came just as I pressed the zap button, and I didn't see it till I looked at the deleted history to see who the original poster was. Apart from being a word-for-word copyvio, it seemed to me that it failed WP:NOTGUIDE and would have difficulty establishing notability - though your search suggests the last may not be true. I have deleted the talk page to tidy up, and will explain to the original poster what he would need to do to make a viable article. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 14:48, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
Thanks John, I see this kind of thing a lot in new page patrol and I actually just asked another admin what their thoughts were concerning better educating new users BEFORE they post a wiki article. I see a lot of articles that blip on and look poorly sourced and formatted, but with subjects that have potential to be perfectly fine additions. It seems a shame that the best we can often due is to give them a welcome template after the fact. Thanks for cleaning up the talk page.--Torchwood Who? (talk) 14:56, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
You have an excellent point there, and I have an idea which I never quite get round to writing down that on signing up for an account new users should be made to read a short page about what WP is and is not, and actually click an "I have read and understood the above" checkbox. What worries me is the flood of people who think in all innocence that this is a place to write about themselves, their startup companies, their garage bands... Maybe I really will get round to writing this up. If so I'll invite you to any discussion. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 15:02, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
That's on-track with what I was thinking. Keep me posted.--Torchwood Who? (talk) 15:05, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
Sorry for butting in here, but I must say I strongly support your idea of having new users read a paragraph and checking a box when they register an account. Even a couple of sentences about notability and reliable sources would go a long way. I wish you luck! Regards, PDCook (talk) 18:59, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

deletion of Ric Horner - request for undeletion

Hi,

your deletion of my entry - still in formative stages - for Ric Horner seems somewhat harsh. RH is an artist who, over many years now, has developed an oeuvre of considerable interest, largely because of its integrity. Although he is practically a hermit, paintings by him are owned by several notable people on wikipedia, and his works are both brilliantly original and sought-after. You'll find him on the castelarts.co.uk webpage named next to Damien HIrst, whose status as wikipedia-worthy is unquestioned.

It is difficult to see what further form of eminence I can use for establshing his credibility beyond pointing to galleries and art shows. RH has not stooped to book illustrations, and nor has he appaeared in the London media, which a lot of artists base their 'importance' on, rather than their art. He just paints light in an extraordinarily accomplished way. I would have written more on this this evening if you had not deleted my start.

Thanks for considering this request

The bar for inclusion in Wikipedia is quite high: the term is notability, which is not a matter of subjective opinion but needs to be demonstrated by showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." Significant means more than just listing-type mentions; reliable excludes Myspace, blogs, places where anyone can post anything; independent excludes the subject's own website and affiliated ones such as galleries selling his work. What is needed is something like independent reviews. More detail at WP:Notability (people) and WP:CREATIVE. If you think the article can be improved to meet that standard, I will undelete it for you into the WP:Article Incubator, a place where articles not yet ready for the encyclopedia can be worked on. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 14:47, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

Thanks - I'd appreciate you undeleting it, so it can be improved (please could you direct me via a link). I'll add press reviews as references, and further details. May I point out that, for artists, galleries are one of the most important links; and while not being necessarily independent, they are a guarantee of worthiness/interest - a good gallery does not just take any tom, dick or harry on to its books. May I also point out (by way of trying to be helpful) that this is all getting too complicated for someone like me who just wanted to assist wikipedia in an area where it is lacking. I don't have the time - or the wikipedia skills - to do a lot of this stuff. If there is a feedback forum it might be worth noting that it is very discouraging to have a post deleted, probably by a non-expert in the field, after editing an entry. The instinctive reaction is to say that I won't bother again. I've started this one so I'll finish it, though. Cheers. Ian. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.152.178.7 (talk) 19:22, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

Well now that the article has survived a deletion review on the French Wikipedia I don't think there should be aq problem adding it here. I can't speak french or I would offer my services. You might try rewriting the article in English and asking a editor to make sure that the spelling and context should be in English but I think it has a doubled chance of surviving here.Hell In A Bucket (talk) 00:47, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

Is it possible for you to reed it ? It has his place here, maybe it can be cut or improved by English Wuikipedians Thanks --Raymondnivet (talk) 13:15, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

What I deleted, Ophélie Bretnacher disappearance, was not an article at all, just a message to say that the article Ophélie Bretnacher which was deleted at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ophélie Bretnacher had been kept on French Wikipedia. Each Wikipedia has its own standards and procedures, so that is not a conclusive argument for reintroducing the article here. If you disagree with the decision of the AfD, you should take it to WP:Deletion review. Your persistence is admirable, but I have to say that I share the view of nearly everyone at the AfD, this does not meet our inclusion criteria. It is a sad and tragic case, and it was reported in the newspapers, but that does not make it notable in an encyclopedic sense. However there is no point in trying to persuade me - you need to go to WP:DRV and try to convince people there that the AfD was wrongly decided. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 14:45, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

The article was deleted because the only achievement claimed was that she has just signed with a model agency. That is not enough to have an article in an encyclopedia. We are part of a miniscule Chitrapur Saraswat community and are proud of the achievements of Sanmesh Kalyanpur. At a young age of 15, he had saved his 8 year old sister from drowning in open manhole during the July floods which drowned Mumbai in India. The Government of India recognised him with National Bravery Award and he was selected for the prestigious Sanjay Chopra Award. He was also awarded the President of India's Jeevan Raksha medal which is awarded for exemplarary bravery. Maharashtra State selected him for Maharashtra Gaurav Puraskar. All these achievements ot a young age justifies mention in Wikipedia.

All the awards mentioned form part of Government of India's gazzette notification and there are many articles in newspaper which were provided on the site. I was disappointed when I was told that the page has been deleted since tthe achievement doesnot merit inclusion.

HELP!

Hi, I created a page for Klaus Thymann yesterday, he is a noted photographer and filmmaker who has won many awards. Please let me know what I was doing wrong in creating this page, and why it was deleted. I thought it was maybe because I made so many edits, but that's just because I kept making mistakes. I do not know this photographer and am just trying to let people know who he is... I can see in the history that his page has been deleted a bunch of times by several different people.. Please help me out here..

Thanks —Preceding unsigned comment added by Afgintern (talkcontribs) 20:57, 7 January 2010

You say you "do not know this photographer" but the article shows that he is represented by the photographic agency AFG Management, and your username makes it clear that you are working for them and trying on their behalf to use Wikipedia to promote one of their clients. This is absolutely against our rules on Advertising and Conflict of Interest. I see also in the history that this article has already been deleted five times, including a version two months ago from a user called Afgmanagement. Sorry, but tell your boss that Wikipedia is not an advertising or promotion service. JohnCD (talk) 21:42, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

Why did you delete my article (Robert Lehane) when he is a notable person? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cannon 94 (talkcontribs) 14:45, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

JohnCD, I left a brief note at the end of your page. I would like to rewrite to article (Robert Lehane) and I will provide sources this time that prove he is a notable person. Please reply as soon as possible. Cannon 94 —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cannon 94 (talkcontribs) 18:56, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

First, Wikipedia is a serious encyclopedia which deals in facts which are verifiable from reliable sources: your statements like "proved to be the greatest player of all time" and "Pele saw him... and said:"He is better then me when he has both hands tied behind his back"" do not suggest that you are serious. Second, even if you take the nonsense out, there is no indication that he is notable in Wikipedia's sense, which is not a matter of opinion: for footballers, the standard is WP:ATHLETE and requires a subject to have competed at the fully professional level. Playing in youth teams is not enough. JohnCD (talk) 21:00, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

I have seen everal footballers that are not yet proffesional in this encyclopedia and he recently signed professional on a youth contract. If i do a bit of tweaking to the facts will the article be ok? --Cannon 94 (talk) 17:57, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

I would be surprised if there are footballers who don't meet WP:ATHLETE, unless they are notable for some other reason - in every disputed case that I have seen, an article has been rejected unless the player has actually played at the fully professional level - just having been signed is not enough. In any case, we have a policy WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS that says the existence of one article that shouldn't be here is not a reason for allowing another. You can put the article in again, but first read Your First Article and WP:Notability (people) and the policy on WP:Biographies of living persons. It will take more than "tweaking" - any claims it makes must be backed up by reliable sources, so stick to facts, not opinions like "greatest player of all time". But if his only claim to notability is as a youth footballer, it is likely to be deleted again. JohnCD (talk) 22:01, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

Camponhoyle

Extended content

Hi, I was briefly looking through the page history of Christian, to see how many edits there had been and I spot a vandal editor called CamponhoyletheII. I went to his userpage and it said 'hi im a sockpupeteer.and all suspected sockpuupets are my work and i will now take over wikipedia with my super virus.prepare to die admins.' So I decided to see if there was a 'Camponhoyle the I' which there was who was also a vandal and sockpuppeteer who had several confirmed sockpuppets and suspected Sockpuppets which he confirmed are his above. I believe that this Camponhoyle has returned, and under his recent blocks and investigations and whatever, two main names appeared, MangoJuice and yourself. When I went to Mangojuice it appeared that he had semi-retired so I decided to come to you. I hope you can deal with this matter, I don't personally want to get involved in it all. If you want to speak to me more, see my talk page. Thanks Quiggers1P (talk) 21:40, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

Update: I have suspicions that the accounts Paulfritzl Smell wellyssssss Frankreichman and Camponarmstrong are all sockpuppets as well. Smelly wellyssssss said on fritzl case, he has a son called paul from camponhoyle, Paulfritzl said something similar, Frankreichman is the same person as Camponarmstrong and paulfritzl (see his unban appeal on his talk page) and the campon bit in camponarmstrong gives that away. Thanks Quiggers1P (talk) 21:54, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

Another update: I searched accounts with Campon in them, the ones that sprung out at me were Camponmangojuice, Camponjohncd and then Camponmasterdrive and Camponmasterdriver. All the accounts were created within the space of just over one day, there is pretty much enough evidence that they are linked. I feel for you, when they were originally vandalising, it must of been tough! Thanks Quiggers1P (talk) 22:04, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

No time to look into this today. I should forget about CSL Sofas if I were you: (a) your last version was an attack which would only be allowable based on strong reliable sources, which that kind of review site is not, because anyone can post what they like there; (b) I doubt if they are notable, (c) the title has now been salted so that to create it you would have to convince an admin to unsalt, (d) trying to create that article was on of the Camponhoyle gang's trademarks, so popping up and trying it again throws strong suspicion on you - the best way to defuse that is to forget about CSL and establish a record of editing constructively on other things. Right okay fair enough you have a good right to be suspicious. I was ONCE one of those vandals but I turned my back on them and disappeared working hard to become an admin on another wiki. I eventually returned to wikipedia for a clean slate and to contribute sensibly (have a look at my contributions minus CSL Sofas). Trust me that company is notable, but I will take your advice and give it up. Do have a look at all those accounts and ban them because knowing my friends, they'll keep coming back and back. My vandal career ended a while back, but there's hasn't. If you need help on whether you need to ban new accounts or not see my talk page. Trust me now please, because I am contributing sensibly. Thankyou for reading Quiggers1P (talk) 22:22, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

Is there a place I can report the accounts to, because I will report them and save you the job of reporting them, or are you going to report them yourself? Thanks Quiggers1P (talk) 09:41, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

Leave it with me, I'll look into it. JohnCD (talk) 09:44, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

Could you also delete User:Quiggers1P/CSL Sofas, as I am taking your advice and abandoning plans to create that page. Thanks Quiggers1P (talk) 10:19, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

Update:Another account, Owencoyleisatraitor has been revealed to my by Camponhoyle himself, and got it banned soon after vandalising the Bolton Wanderers F.C. page, if you check the IP address of CamponhoyletheII, you should be able to find the connection. Thanks Quiggers1P (talk) 11:32, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

Are you ready to make a case against all of these new sockpuppets? Thanks Quiggers1P (talk) 18:46, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

I've seen that you have blocked almost all of the sockpuppets, and tagged them as 'suspected' sockpuppets? Does there have to be a case to make them confirmed or do they just have to prove it themselves? I can tell you now however that they are all sockpuppets of Camponhoyle, definitely. Thanks Quiggers1P (talk) 19:49, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

We would only put "confirmed" if there had been actual confirmation from a check-user, which is a technical process that relates usernames to the IPs they edit from. For obvious cases like these, that would be a waste of time. They are blocked anyway.
Nearly all those names were already blocked - I have blocked two new ones and one hangover from September which had never edited.
Now: thank you for your input, but I am getting rather worried by your keenness on pursuing this. Vandals of this type get their excitement from "the thrill of the chase" - setting up new accounts, leaving taunting messages and so on. Our strategy is to try to make things so boring that they give up and go back to throwing stones at cats or spray-painting "Poop" on the school walls. It is summarised by RBI - Revert, Block, Ignore. Camponhoyle was a nuisance for a few days last September; if he is starting again that is a pain, but if we stick with RBI he will probably get bored again soon.
My concern is that by hunting down these accounts and messaging me several times a day about them, you may actually become part of the problem by adding to the excitement, especially if they become aware and start to watch your edits and my talk page. I can see a game starting where they set up an account, leak it to you, place bets on how soon you tell me and it gets blocked. We don't want to give them that much attention: they don't actually do much harm, silly vandalism is usually caught and reverted quickly, and anyone doing much is soon blocked, sock or not.
If you really want to turn your back on this lot, I strongly suggest that you forget all about them and ignore them from now on, and concentrate on other aspects - there's plenty to do here. In fact, though I won't do it unless you agree, I suggest that you let me block this account, and set up a new one as a "clean start" which will have nothing to do with Camponhoyle, ever.

Is it possible to just delete the edits linked with Camponhoyle? I mean I have spent a lot of time on some pages (Particularly List of Bolton Wanderers F.C. Transfers) and I do not wish for the credit to be lost on them. Is this possible? Thanks Quiggers1P (talk) 20:46, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

No, that isn't possible - never mind, forget that idea, just carry on and forget about C. Thanks for your help. Regards, JohnCD (talk)

Maybe I could set up a dummy account each time to inform you of new action and then you can ban it immediately after, or would this not be a good idea? Quiggers1P (talk) 20:55, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

No, that would not be a good idea - stick to one account. Read again what I said above - I don't want you to inform me of new Camponhoylery, I want you to ignore them, forget about them, do nothing even if you hear that they are planning new socks. I honestly believe that will be the quickest way to the point where they get bored and give up. They are only a minor nuisance, an unimportant drop in the tidal wave of vandalism that Wikipedia copes with every day; don't give them a sense of importance.
