WikiCup 2012 October newsletter

The 2012 WikiCup has come to a close; congratulations to Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), our 2012 champion! Cwmhiraeth joins our exclusive club of previous winners: Dreamafter (2007), jj137 (2008), Durova (2009), Sturmvogel 66 (2010) and Hurricanehink (2011). Our final standings were as follows:

So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, the prize is awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round.

Awards will be handed out in the coming days; please bear with us! This year's competition also saw fantastic contributions in all rounds, from newer Wikipedians contributing their first good or featured articles, right up to highly experienced Wikipedians chasing high scores and contributing to topics outside of their usual comfort zones. It would be impossible to name all of the participants who have achieved things to be proud of, but well done to all of you, and thanks! Wikipedia has certainly benefited from the work of this year's WikiCup participants.

Next year's WikiCup will begin in January. Currently, discussions and polls are open, and all contributions are welcome. You can also sign up for next year's competition. There will be no further newsletters this year, although brief notes may be sent out in December to remind everyone about the upcoming competition. Genealogical relationships of Presidents of the United States

I see you're the only recently-active WikiProject History Coordinator. Would you mind taking a look at this article?
The 'multiple issues' maintenance template covers most of its issues plus take a look at each chart's 'source' - all assert that "chart prepared with data from Wikipedia" with some asserted sources including rootsweb/genealogy/ancestry/mypages blogs/user-submitted websites, plus all assert "not previously published". I looked-up WikiProject Genealogy but it seems pretty moribund with the last edits to the Wikipedia:WikiProject Genealogy page dating to 2011 and the four members not seeming very active.
I see that this 'relationships' article was nom'ed for deletion in February 2012 (see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Genealogical relationships of Presidents of the United States) with the vote being "Keep". There haven't been any improvements since then, though, and the article itself has been tagged since October of last year. From the AfD discussion, some editors indicated the information presented in the article "is interesting" but when the information presented in the 'cousin' sections is almost completely-unsourced plus there is the additional consideration assertions being made about living persons... Do you have any ideas or recommendations about what to do with this article? Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 21:47, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

This is not a newsletter

This is just a tribute.

Anyway. You're getting this note because you've participated in discussion and/or asked for updates to either the Article Feedback Tool or Page Curation. This isn't about either of those things, I'm afraid ;p. We've recently started working on yet another project: Echo, a notifications system to augment the watchlist. There's not much information at the moment, because we're still working out the scope and the concepts, but if you're interested in further updates you can sign up here.

In addition, we'll be holding an office hours session at 21:00 UTC on Wednesday, 14 November in #wikimedia-office - hope to see you all there :). I appreciate it's an annoying time for non-Europeans: if you're interested in chatting about the project but can't make it, give me a shout and I can set up another session if there's enough interest in one particular timezone or a skype call if there isn't. Re: Patron Saints of Places

I noticed on the Talk page two separate comments, going back a few years, that the page would be more user-friendly if the listing was according to Place. Accordingly I've been trying to re-sort the entries towards that end. I've been making the changes in what I hope are manageable bits, partly because it's very time-consuming and I don't want to lose anything(particularly the citations), and partly because I've been waiting for someone to object. (I take it from your welcomed feedback that I may proceed.) As far as the other patron articles: In general, since an article on any individual saint would indicate their various areas of patronage, geographic and otherwise, I think the over-all listings would be better grouped by topic. However, those pages seem somewhat less pressing, because at least they are separated alphabetically, (whereas, I found the Places page a bit confusing ... particularly because a number of the historical "places" are now known as something else). ---I am going to see if I can find some images as well (unless there is a rule against images and lists). -On another note, I was looking for a clean-up listing for the Saints portal, but the one I found dates back to 3/12/10. Is there a more current one somewhere? ---(I noticed your comment on the WT:X talk page, and I would be interested in helping out a bit on Advent/Christmas content, if you like.) --- appreciate the input. I see, by the way, that you have listed Church of Scotland under Anglican although it is in fact Presbyterian. I also see you have not included Presbyterian as a separate subsection. I honestly very seriously doubt I would stand a chance if I did run. I can think of more than a few editors out there who I've really annoyed while working with contentious material over the years, and I tend to think that they would be likely to come out in droves, possibly even from retirement, if I did. About my edits

Hi, I have been talking with an admin on my talkpage [1] And have requested for assistance for well...my own edits. As I mentioned in that conversation, I have been trying to branch out to other pages. However, despite my time spent at the LLDM article, I am still somewhat uninformed of everything wiki. And I feel that my edits are now in question and I may, if not already, be labeled all sorts of things.

My request for you is to read the LLDM article to see where NPOV issues may exist. If you could also help me out in making good edits and advise me to make sure I don't get caught up in the middle of the action. The problem is, I don't see any wrong doing on my part, however I know how cognitive dissonance can affect people, so I am trying to get input on my own behavior from this point on. This is my attempt at trying to do good. I want to contribute to LLDM (Considering all the research I have invested in it in the past) and be a legitimate editor (as opposed to constant accusations leveled against me). I fear that if I edit anything on that page, I'll be indiscriminately challenged and reverted.

In other words, if in fact I have been a bad editor (and I deny it but I feel like I'd be fighting an uphill battle on that given recent events), I would like help to turn that around. Would you please help me in this regard? Thanks for your time Fordx12 (talk) 02:18, 13 November 2012 (UTC)

La Luz del Mundo

Hi John

re: the Serious SPA concerns which we noticed on the Rfc for this article's editor RidjalA.

After extensively going back and forth of the long-term History of edits to this article, I am not quite convinced that the 3 main editors now (Fordx12, Ajaxfiore and RidjalA) are 3 unique unconnected individuals (or even 2 individuals). There has been regular section blanking, a 90 day semi-protection of the page in Apr. 2012, creation of many single day redline users accounts etc. activation of sleeper accounts etc and all the usual Good-Hand/Bad-Hand stuff. AFT5 newsletter

Hey all :). A couple of quick updates (one small, one large)

First, we're continuing to work on some ways to increase the quality of feedback and make it easier to eliminate and deal with non-useful feedback: hopefully I'll have more news for you on this soon :).

Second, we're looking at ways to increase the actual number of users patrolling and take off some of the workload from you lot. Part of this is increasing the prominence of the feedback page, which we're going to try to do with a link at the top of each article to the relevant page. This should be deployed on Tuesday (touch wood!) and we'll be closely monitoring what happens. Let me know if you have any questions or issues :). Hallo John, I come from Italian Wilkipedia. I noted that in English Wikipedia exists the page of an Italian composer of the late Renaissance, John Juvenal Ancina (redirect from Giovanni Giovenale Ancina). This seems me quite strange because all artists sorts with their original name (in 'Oxford Music Online' too). What do you think about this? Thank you very much and best regards. Request for assistence--with addendum

Are you serious? I have no problems with off-the-wall humor but I need some serious help with what seems to be disruptive editing. (And yes, I saw you are on a wikibreak). I looked around for someone else who might help and would have gone to general mediation, but the matter is within the field of religion. People who are entirely neutral on religion but knowledgable about it are very rare (NPOV is a matter of relativity); the spiritual realm involves difficulties with verifiability; and when imagery is 2000-3000 years old getting reliable sources can be difficult. Like archaeology and paleoanthropology, one works with incomplete evidence, piecing together what has survived. It doesn't have the certainty of double-blind laboratory research.

WHAT OCCURRED I started editing an article, it was deleted within 18 min. I stopped editing and went to the talk page requesting comment. At issue is a subject lacking adequate secondary sources. What does one do in such a situation? Can we examine the primary source? The other editor insisted on a very strict interpretation of secondary sources and NPOV and seemed unwilling to discuss anything. When I went elsewhere to ask for assistance the other editor caused an editing conflict. I read about griefing, harassment and gaming the system and listed them on the talk page. He accused me of making a personal attack. ETC. I've been feeling increasingly uncomfortable with the tenor of the interchange. A third party needs to be involved in this. I ignored him for a few months and finally wrote something on my talk page. He sent a notification to my personal email I didn't even check it out or follow up.

I don't do editing wars. And WP rules have become exceedingly intricate. The other editor has far more experience with them than I have.

THE ARTICLE is The Bride of Christ. The most important source is the Bible because the secondary sources are few and their theology is weak--(just as Isaiah prophecized, the bride would be forsaken until her vindication--see below for ref.). But what we do find is in Rev. 21:2, 9-10 which describes "the bride, the wife of the Lamb," as "the Holy City, the New Jerusalem"--a series of synonymous names. Something parallel is found repeatedly in Isaiah--"Jacob, Israel, my servant" even "descendent of Abraham" Is. 41:8-9; 44:1,21; 48:12 (and also a pairing of "Jerusalem" and "Judah"--male and female images) Is. 1:1, 2:1; 44:26. wE KNOW Jacob was renamed Israel and Mount Zion is part of Jerusalem, but the use of these names is found repeatedly together and separately throughout Isaiah. The "Servant" is mentioned more than 14 times. Jerusalem is mentioned at least 17 times, often with Zion. The least I can do is bring this to the attention of other editors, so that they might examine the evidence, because the use of synonymous names seems to be related.

The Lord calls you back,
like a wife forsaken and grieved in spirit... Is. 54:6
For Zion's sake I will not be silent

Four times Isaiah describes the bride/wife/Jerusalem/Zion/city as "forsaken" (49:14; 60:15; 62:4 and 12. In Gal 4:27 Paul refers us to Is 54:1--"...the deserted wife..." There is no other place in the Bible that speaks so extensively of a bride, especially in this prophetic and symbolic way, as in Isaiah. (See Is. 54:1-7; 62:1-12 and Mother Zion 66:7-14)

And what importance does this have for our time? Recently Evangelical women have seen this as a way to focus on how to be a good Christian. And marriage is where we learn how to live together despite our differences and how to make peace--something urgently needed in a time of globalization. Of course WP requires that we not include unpublished research, but can we state a "self-evident truth"--that it's easier for women to identify with the image of the bride of Christ than for men? Rules as guidelines, not as prisons

Thank you for such a prompt response! Let me clarify that, like many women, I don't identify with modern extremist feminism. Men and women need to work together, not be in competition. (And I'm a lay contemplative, not a theologian. I'm not in the competition to be published.)

Wikipedia made a rule about verifiability because of serious editing violations. It seems tragic then to ignore what most people can agree on, just because it hasn't been published. How can we find consensus unless we can discuss it?

To give an example of differences of insights--2000 years ago men were looking for an adult male Messiah to lead them in battle against the Romans. Women knew that a Messiah needed to be born first and to be raised. Mary and Elizabeth demonstrate this in their awareness of the Messiah before he was born. In the Magnificat Mary expresses how Jesus' reign would not be about power.

Also--Jesus didn't silence women. Women immediately NOTICED that Jesus didn't treat them like other men did! (Dorothy Sayers commented on this in 1939--see the last page in the second commentary in Are Women Human?)

We have two examples of Jesus initially dismissing women--Mary, his mother at Cana, and the Canaanite (or Syrophoenecian) woman begging for the healing of her daughter. "What is this to me, woman, my time has not yet come." and "It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs" (Mt. 15:26 and Mk 7:27)--and yet when they continued with faith, he heard them and responded. The silencing of women is entirely in the Epistles. 2000 years ago slavery was an accepted reality. Men were subordinated--it's not surprising women were also. And yet the Church has missed important insights because women were silenced. That is why the bride was forsaken. The Church needs to find a way out of this Catch-22, that because this was a tradition it can't change. It involves following Jesus. A careful reading of Deutero-Isaiah (40-66) reveals how often Jerusalem, Zion, the city, the bride, the wife, the mother are mentioned. And we find this identified as the bride in Revelation 21:2, 9. There's too much bad news in Revelation. The marriage is the Good News. Is there some way to discuss this in WP?--Margaret9mary (talk) 03:25, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

Spotlight

The core topics work group is the group whose specific purpose is to help identify and develop those articles which are of greatest importance to an overall understanding of the broad subject of Christianity, based on what is included in the core topics list. These articles include some of specific churches and individuals, history, philosophical and theological matters, and more. We have had some recent discussion regarding which articles should be included in this list, and it probably makes sense to revisit the selections, and try to figure out how best to work to make them high quality articles. Discussion is beginning at WT:X regarding these matters, and all input is welcome.

suggestion George Cosens in next Christianity newsletter

George Cosens was significant in British church history as the first known Jamaican (or any black afro-caribbean) church pastor. First full pastorate at Cradley Heath Baptist Church. Previously a Primitive Methodist missioner, and then assistant pastor at Aylesbury. 2013 Religion Goals: My minor contribution

John, on your page of desired religion articles, under Judaism, you have requested "Jewish religious year." The article Jewish holiday (which I would like to rename Jewish holidays, but which I fear doing because there are so many links already) covers that territory. (Actually, when I looked for an analogy article to check myself on this a couple of months back, "Christian holidays" redirects to Liturgical year.) In Judaism the concept is not exactly parallel to the concept in Christianity. But to make sure we cover all bases, may I suggest: Jewish religious year becomes a disambiguation page, leading to Jewish holiday (sic) for a description of the religious observances through the year, and also leading to Jewish calendar for a description of how the calendar is built? John, I read what you sent. That article really just combined content that in Wikipedia appears under Jewish holiday and Hebrew calendar. So I'm going to create an article that points to the others. Odd, though, that WP doesn't really quite have a page type like this. It could be created as a disambiguation page, but we're not really exactly parsing an ambiguous term here. Created as a regular article, it might technically be considered a stub, but it's not really something that needs fleshing out at that location, either. Look in my sandbox and see what you think. Thank you. Come to a choice between Cthulhu and the FSM, I have to say the latter is a lot cuter and has a lot better PR campaign. There do seem to be quite a few reference sources discussing the FSM as well. Although I acknowledge the incredible theological chasm between the tomatosaucarian or non-tomatosaucarian schools, I would love to see an image of it on the main page. To follow up on the first survey in April, I am conducting a second survey to learn more about dispute resolution volunteers - their motivations for resolving disputes, the experiences they've had, and their ideas for the future.
