United States customary units[edit]

You recently edited United States customary units, changing "Statute or survey mile to Statute mile". In your edit summary you stated "Units of length: statute mile is not the survey mile". This is debatable. The National Institute of Standards and Technology, in the cited source and all their on-line documents I have found, maintain that in the US, "statute mile" and "U.S. survey mile" are identical. However, dictionaries and even other US federal agencies, often treat the US statute mile as identical to the international mile.

I am not sure how to edit the article to reflect this; I don't want a minor discrepancy in one unit to overwhelm the rest of the article. --Jc3s5h (talk) 19:43, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't read the reference closely enough. I agree it would be good to note the ambiguity. [[1]] half does that by pointing out that the 1760 Yard "statute" pre-dates the divergent re-definitions of the Yard and Survey Yard. I am not sure how best to do this either.
