Bourke mosque[edit]

Hi Jookieapc,

Yes, it is an old mosque. There is a sign in front of the mosque (just visible in the photo) that gives some history on it, and there is Islamic style stencilling on the inside walls. Nearby are some Afghan graves aligned, I believe, to Mecca. A wonderful blending of Islamic tradition with the humblest, most characteristic of Aussie outback architecture. You might also be interested in the old mosque in Broken Hill, the first mosque in Australia. That one is almost as humble, being mostly clad in corrugated iron!

Hi Brian - thanks for the info. I don't suppose you have some photos of the inside of the mosque at Burke or of the sign? Interesting stuff indeed. I'm might have to go on a road trip.
