July 2019[edit]

Information icon Welcome to Wikipedia, and thank you for your contributions. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, please note that there is a Manual of Style that should be followed to maintain a consistent, encyclopedic appearance. Deviating from this style, as you did in Ken Kesey, disturbs uniformity among articles and may cause readability or accessibility problems. Please take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Please see MOS:REPEATLINK. Peaceray (talk) 19:15, 24 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Vajrayana[edit]

Hi Jorge,

You edited the Vajrayana page to replace the term "Hinayana" with "Theravada".

I believe this is an incorrect substitution - I understand the Theravada to be a relatively late development in Buddhism, incorporating many ideas that later appeared in the early Mahayana texts.

Perhaps a more appropriate substitution would be "Sravakayana" - the path of the hearers, i.e. those who heard the Buddha speak. I appreciate that "Hinayana" (the "Narrow Path") is considered insulting by some people, because it is used to contrast with the "Broad Path" of Mahayana. Indeed, it is one of the Mahayana precepts "not to disparage the Hinayana". But the way the term is generally used, it means the path to Arhat-ship; Mahayanists have traditionally regarded Arhat-ship as an inferior goal. Difficult, eh?

I'm not reverting your edit; I'm no scholar, I haven't studied the Theravada, I no longer consider myself a Buddhist, and I have renounced my teacher.

Take care, MrDemeanour (talk) 12:24, 16 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
