Welcome![edit]

Although some prefer welcoming newcomers with cookies, I find fruit to be a healthier alternative.

Hello, Joshuaism, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like this place and decide to stay.

What are the four general rules at Wikipedia?
The four general rules are to respect your fellow Wikipedians, remain neutral, cite your sources, and to ignore a rule if it prevents you from improving or maintaining Wikipedia.
How do I edit a page?
  1. Click 'Edit this page' or 'Edit' on the top of the page that you want to edit.
  2. Make your changes in the edit window.
  3. Preview your changes by clicking the 'Show preview' button.
  4. Click the 'Save page' button.
See Wikipedia:How to edit a page for more detailed information.
Why can't I edit some particular pages?
Some pages that have been vandalized repeatedly are semi-protected, meaning that editing by new or unregistered users is prohibited through technical measures. If you have an account that is four days old and has made at least 10 edits, then you can bypass semi-protection and edit any semi-protected page. Some pages, such as highly visible templates, are fully-protected, meaning that only administrators can edit them.
Where can I experiment with editing Wikipedia?
How do I create an article?
Please use the Article Wizard to create one, then add references to the article as explained below.
What are references, sources, and citations all about?
All claims must be supported by a book, website, or news organization independent of the subject of the article. The source must be reliable, meaning it cannot be a blog, MySpace page, or personal website. This makes it difficult, if not impossible, to prove that an inaccurate statement is true, and that it should stay in the article. The policy regarding this states that the statement has to be verifiable, not necessarily true. See Wikipedia:Verifiability for more information.
How do I insert a reference into an article?

For inline references:

  1. Do a search on Ask.com, Google, or your preferred search engine for the subject of the article that you want to put a reference in.
  2. Click 'Edit this page' or 'Edit' in the Wikipedia article, and insert a claim into that article stating a fact about the subject. Don't click the save button just yet.
  3. In the search you did in step 1, find a website that supports the claim you made in step 2. Highlight the address in the address bar (where it says http://www.some-website.com/some-page.htm).
  4. Go to the reference generator, click on the 'An arbitrary website' bubble, and fill out the as many fields as you can. Then click 'Get reference wiki text'.
  5. Highlight, and then copy (Ctrl+C or Apple+C), the resulting text.
  6. In the article, after the claim you made in step 2, paste (Ctrl+V or Apple+V) the text you copied in step 5.
  7. If the article does not have a References, Footnotes, Notes, or Bibliography section, then add this below the See Also section and above the External Links section:

==References==
{{Reflist}}

For references put at the end of an article:

  1. Do a search on Ask.com, Google, or your preferred search engine for the subject of the article that you want to put a reference in.
  2. In the search, find a website that supports the claims made in the article. Highlight the address in the address bar (where it says http://www.some-website.com/some-page.htm).
  3. Go to the reference generator, click on the 'An arbitrary website' bubble, and fill out the as many fields as you can. Then click 'Get reference wiki text'.
  4. Highlight, and then copy (Ctrl+C or Apple+C), the resulting text.
  5. Go to the Wikipedia article. If the article does not have a References, Footnotes, Notes, or Bibliography section, then add this below the See Also section and above the External Links section:

==References==
{{Reflist}}

Then, add this after the {{Reflist}}, in a new line:

{{Refbegin}}
*Press paste (Ctrl+V or Apple+V) after this asterisk, then remove the <ref></ref> tags

{{Refend}}
What is a WikiProject, and how do I join one?
A WikiProject is a group of editors that are interested in improving the coverage of certain topics on Wikipedia. If you would like to help, add your username to the list that is on the bottom of the WikiProject page.

Image filter referendum[edit]

Hi. First, I'm sorry for the confusion in your effort to vote in the image filter referendum. The talk page for the referendum being somewhat irregularly laid out, I have only just now seen that you had issue, and I wanted to make sure that you had the opportunity to vote if you would like to do so.

The complication is that the instructions have to be hosted in one place (Meta), but that we are not all eligible to vote from Meta. In order to vote, you have to go to the Wikimedia project you use most often (English Wikipedia, in your case) and vote from there. If you click this, it should take you to the voting interface and you should have no problems from there. If you do, please let me know at my talk page, and I'll see what I can do to help clear up any issues. Thanks. --Maggie Dennis (WMF) (talk) 11:03, 25 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

merge proposition for Lamia (D&D)[edit]

Hello, as you took part in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Lamia (Dungeons & Dragons) (2nd nomination), which closed on "no consensus", I'm bringing to your attention a discussion on whether to merge or not that has opened on the article talk page.Folken de Fanel (talk) 10:14, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Muhammed al-Darbi et al.[edit]

Undeleted for merger.

Thanks! -- and a heads-up[edit]

Greetings!

Thanks for your support in the recent {{afd}}s and in considering whether some of those articles merit deletion review. It comes at a time when I could sure use it. But I am sorry, I think in doing so, you have opened yourself to a criticism that you aren't making an effort to assume good faith. I don't want you to face problems for supporting my efforts. I don't want that, in general, as I don't wish it for any good faith contributor. In particular I don't want it to happen to you as I could really do with more people willing to examine the issues, as you have.

I think the contributor who said Bushranger merited more AGF made a good point. I am sorry, but I think most contributors would agree with them.

Assuming good faith, or at least giving the appearance one is assuming good faith, is particularly hard when one thinks those one disagrees with have already stopped showing good faith. In the very long run I think it makes sense to at least give the appearance of assuming good faith, even when, privately, one strongly suspects the other side isn't showing good faith.

I am not a christian myself, but, occasionally, the meek Jesus, "turn the other cheek" approach guilts the other party to returning to good faith. Occasionally, giving the appearance I could assume good faith really paid off, as, even though I couldn't conceive of a good faith explanation for someone else's apparent intransigence -- it turned out there was one. Sometimes the explanation was as simple as that I had seriously misunderstood something, and I was wrong all along, and they were right.

So, let me repeat my gratitude for your support, and my concern that I don't want you to have problems for not assuming good faith on the part of my challengers.

As per longstanding convention I am going to advise User:Bushranger of the DRV. Contributors are supposed to be told when they are mentioned by name in a discussion. He or she is likely to find out eventually, and it would be better coming from you or I.

Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 21:40, 17 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Your accusation of sockpuppetry against Dbigxray is so far of the mark I am quite astunded you actually filed it. I should also like to know why a probable IP sock of user Highstakes00 is mailing you? Facts, not fiction (talk) 19:24, 18 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hello Darkness, my old friend. I don't know you or this IP (who I am astounded you would accuse of sockpuppetry!) but I am impressed that either of you are interested in commenting on a sockpuppetry investigation that is not against either of you. I also do not know this Highstakes00 and have never encountered him, so why he would try to contact me in such a visible way is beyond me (if that is even the case). But if you have anything of value to say I encourage you to discuss it with me. I'm a nice guy. Are you? --Joshuaism (talk) 19:47, 18 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I am incredibly blunt and straight forward, some think me a decent human being however. I commented on the sockpuppetry case as I am aware of both editors. In the topic area we edit there are a few prolific sockpuppeters User:Highstakes00 is one of them. The IP who has mailed you has the same IP range, same ISP provider and geolocates to the same area as Highstakes. My guess as to why he would mail you is because he edits from the other side of the border to both DBX and VJ. I figure he is stirring the pot :o). Of course if the IP mail has nothing to do with the SPI case you started then I am obviously way off and shall shut my big mouth. Facts, not fiction (talk) 19:54, 18 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Other side of the border? Do you mean he's a Paki? --Joshuaism (talk) 20:00, 18 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I mean he is Pakistani, please remove the racist slur you just used. Facts, not fiction (talk) 20:01, 18 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Edit war on my user page[edit]

Awesome guys! Thanks! And Thank you anonymous user. I've made some screen caps. You would have to hold a very long grudge if that were a hoax account. It definitely exposes bias. I would encourage you to share this at the Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Incidents#User:Geo_Swan_and_AfDs. A number of IPs have already commented on the topic so I don't think that it would be a shameful thing for you to use this account to comment (although the accusation of this being a SPA will fly). I do not think it would be fair though for me to be the only person to expose DbigXray though. These are concerns that belong to the wider community and I would like to see the wider community (including you) commenting on it.--Joshuaism (talk) 21:02, 18 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The user in question is a sock of User:Nangparbat. Any edits he makes anywhere on wiki must be reverted on sight, please do not encourage him. Facts, not fiction (talk) 21:04, 18 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
OMG! Is everyone you meet a sock? Why don't these idiots use TOR or something?--Joshuaism (talk) 21:12, 18 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
As I said above, there are a lot of prolific sockpuppeters in the topic area. And they are usually quite easy to spot, i have been hounded by both the sockpuppeters mentioned here for quite a while so tend to spot them straight away. Can you respond to my request in the previous section when you have a moment. Facts, not fiction (talk) 21:16, 18 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting, but how do I know that a secret cabal of established editors isn't just suppressing the message of a less adept group of editors? Couldn't that dude's message have some relevance to this issue? And why would DBigXray immediately delete his youtube account after being revealed? What is going on?--Joshuaism (talk) 21:39, 18 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't do secrets, however if you think i am trying to "suppress" anyone look here here & here I have had the dubious pleasure of being stalked and attacked by this fellow on a regular basis. As for DBX & his youtube channel, you will have to ask him. I am unsure of the relevance to the AFD issues you raised on ANI, how many Guantanamo bay prisoners are Pakistani or have a connection to Pakistan? And if as the sock said DBX is such a racist bastard then why would he want those articles deleted? I have no idea myself, you seem to know more of that then I do. Still waiting on you to remove your racist slur in the section above. I would appreciate you doing so. Facts, not fiction (talk) 21:48, 18 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It may be a matter of "my enemy's friend is my enemy" to BigD or perhaps he is bigoted against muslims and found an easy target with a compliant group of deletionists. And how do I know that these editors are stalking you? There is just as much evidence to say that the IP got here first and you stalked him here.--Joshuaism (talk) 22:08, 18 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I would have thought it obvious I came here to comment on the SPI case. Also how could I stalk an IP with but one edit?[1] You never did say if the IP was mailing you about the SPI case BTW. I shall assume he did and that it was Highstakes00. Facts, not fiction (talk) 22:20, 18 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well if it was Highstakes00 or one of his puppets I would have to say that his comments were much more respectful than yours towards me as well as towards other users.--Joshuaism (talk) 22:33, 18 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I already told you I was blunt. Respect has to be earned, and there are editors on this site I do have a great deal of respect for, as they earned it, some are even admins who have blocked me. I have been civil towards you, and given your use of racist language and calling me an "edit warrior" is not what I would call either respectful or civil. I got the information I needed and shall leave you, please be aware any evidence you may bring forward against DBX will likely be looked upon as tainted given the sources you got it from. Take care. Hi Joshuaism, I'm working on WikiProject Merge's backlog of pages to be merged after AfD, and I've come across Omar Rajab Amin. Since you were the first to suggest merging in the article's AfD, I wanted to ask you what material you think should be merged into Kuwaiti detainees at Guantanamo Bay. It seems to me mention of Amin besides what is already present in the Kuwaiti detainees list would be undue. I'm inclined to think Amin's article should simply redirect, without any actual merging. If you disagree, please let me know what information you think should be salvaged. A reply here will be fine; I'll watch here for a week. Thanks, BDD (talk) 21:20, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Guess I had forgotten about this. I've made the Amin article into a redirect; it will be easy enough to check the history and merge some content if you find it necessary. Thanks, BDD (talk) 23:34, 21 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Asian 10,000 Challenge invite[edit]

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Asia, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 04:55, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
