Thanks for for notification. I just copied a referenced from the article on the film (which in turn is based the book, which was first) to this article so that there would be a directly to the original book. This is deliberate as do not know after which of the saints San Bernadino was named. The version I corrected claimed that the city was named after General Bernadino Caballero. The is obviously not quite right, as the general was not a saint. The name was probably choosen to honor the general (and president of Paraguay), but they must have choosen one of the Saint Bernards to be the official patron saint of the city. Hi Jost, even if Secure attention key did provide a reliable source, that wouldn't satisfy C-A-D per WP:CIRCULAR. Sources could be copied and used in both articles, obviously. :) I'll take a look at SAK, though I somewhat dread what I'm going to find. :) DonIago (talk) 14:38, 14 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi Doniago, WP:CIRCULAR redirects to Wikipedia:Verifiability#Wikipedia_and_sources_that_mirror_or_use_it. And it states: "Do not use articles from Wikipedia (whether this English Wikipedia or Wikipedias in other languages) as sources.". It does not say that each and every link should have a citation added. And copying a citation from the linked article would violate the first rule of electronic data processing: "One fact, one place" - not only is copied content redundant and takes up valuable disk space, it invites update anomalies (see e.g. Database normalization). If a link has a citation as adornment, the citation should also be a link - to the citation within the linked article. I am not aware of a method to achieve this. But citations in WikiPedia are a thing in dire need of improvement: Ideally there would be a reference database separate from the article that you could link to. Then a book that several articles use as reference would only have a single entry, which would maintenance a lot easier. Oh, and if you feel that a change lacks a reliable source, just add a tag, it is a lot more constructive and polite than reverting a change.--Jost Riedel (talk) 21:45, 18 February 2020 (UTC)

Jost, the issue is that linked articles can change. Claiming "article X verifies the info I added", then, is ineffective because article X could change in a way such that it would no longer verify the information, making the link essentially a false attribution. The simplest solution then, is to copy the citation that verified the information at article X to the article being linked to article X. Perhaps it's redundant, but perhaps not.

Also, reverting information because one believes it should be cited is a legitimate form of challenge per WP:MINREF, and without knowing the reverting editor's motives it is inappropriate to accuse such an editor of being unconstructive or impolite, as we should always strive to assume good faith. Doniano, the issue is that linked articles can change. Yes of course! This is why copying a citation (which then can and will change) is a bad idea. And then, I am an contributor, not an editor. Telling me what to do after you have undone my contribution will only have one result: Me telling you how you can undo the deletion. The longer one contributes to Wikipedia, the more one will find their contributions undone, whether maliciously, good-naturedly, or accidentally. If one isn't comfortable with the idea of contributing to a website where that may be essentially a fact of life, then Wikipedia may not be a good use of their energies. You may want to look over WP:BRD, which talks at length about how the simplest form of editing dispute is frequently that one makes an edit, one is reverted, and then there is discussion regarding whether retaining or discarding the edit is ultimately the better option for the good of the project.

In any case, unless I feel that I've reverted in error, I'm unlikely to undo my own reversion. To do so would be to assume responsibility for the content of the change, which is something I, hopefully understandably, am not comfortable with unless I have a genuine belief that I made a mistake. If you're not willing to work to restore your own material either, then I don't know that there's much left to discuss. DonIago (talk) 02:52, 20 February 2020 (UTC)
