Impact factors[edit]

Hi, thank you for updating several journal impact factors. However, please note that the IF for year X is published in year X+1, so while the reference for an up-to-date IF should say "2013 Journal Citation Reports", the year this was published should be 2014. Thank you for the advice Randy! I just wanted to check with you on something before I make further edits. I work at SAGE Publications and I'm just looking to update some of the info on our journals to more recent years (newer impact factors, editors, etc.). I've only worked here a few months and I've heard from other people in similar positions to mine that they weren't always allowed to update the Wikipedia sites for their journals because it was seen as a conflict of interest. Is there any problem with me going through these small updates? Or any problem making larger edits to the pages, such as adding the journal's scope/focus? I just want to make sure I'm not running afoul of any Wikipedia regulations to ensure accuracy in the posts. Thank you!--Journalseditorial (talk) 19:56, 8 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Small updates are no problem at all (IF, editor names, URLs, etc). Adding scope/focus is a problem, because a/ these statements are often copied from the journal website and therefore a violation of copyright and b/ even if a does not apply, such statements are almost invariably promotional. At one point, an editor called "Luke ruby" added a lot of those to articles. I delete those on sight. Note also that many articles on Sage journals have been created by colleagues of you over the past few years. They all seem to follow the same template and each time I encounter one, I spend an irritated 15 min cleaning them up. just look at the edit histories of many of these articles and you'll see what I mean. I'll make sure to stick to small updates and I'll review some of our past articles and see if I can avoid making the same mistakes as others. Thank you very much for your help! Writing new articles about your employer's products runs afoul of the conflict of interest guidelines and cannot be considered making "small updates". If SAGE is paying you to edit WP, you have to disclose that in a public place. I don't see the appropriate statements at Adult Learning, Journal of Experiential Education, Learning Disability Quarterly or Research and Practice for Persons with Severe Disabilities.
