Do I need to go to school for weeks or months to learn how to improve very flawed articles in Wikipedia?

I'm honestly confused about the incredibly rich complexity involved in contributing as an editor in Wikipedia. It seems to me Wikipedia editing should not require that I take up a whole career in Wikipedia Editing so that I can assist where articles are falling far short of accuracy or sufficiency. How much time should it take for me to learn the basics and not to have my contributions lost?

I made some changes to the article on the topic of Somatics, but those changes were dropped apparently for lack of adequate citation ("unsourced") but I provided a source within Wikipedia itself, which itself was without citation (but stood the test anyway). I happen to know that that information was accurate, though it too was not cited.

Perhaps Wikipedia cannot count as a citation within Wikipedia (?). Okay. But at least I made some effort to reference the source,

Perhaps I failed to grasp some details about how citations must be provided, but so apparently did the author of the very Wikipedia article I cited -- which I may have traced to its original source if'' Wikipedia were consistent in how citations are used and enforced.

Count me as confused.
