Hi! Thanks for pointing us to this database, this may indeed be good information we can use. I have however reverted the two additions you made, as on those two pages, the external link you added does not contain any information which is not already covered in the article itself, or in the plethora of other external links there. But I hope that you can be of help on less large pages - I am sure that there is content (and not just external links) that can be of use there. Please do not add advertising or inappropriate external links to Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not a mere directory of links nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Questions[edit]

I was here before, explaining why I reverted a specific addition of you. Again welcome, I am happy that you started to communicate with us. I am interested in the database you are adding - but I'd like to ask a couple of further questions on this:

  • The page Tebuconazole currently has links to pesticideinfo.org (http://www.pesticideinfo.org/Detail_Chemical.jsp?Rec_Id=PC35028) and to pubchem (http://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/summary/summary.cgi?cid=86102). Typically, these pages also have links to other databases (ChemSpider, KEGG, ChEMBL, ChEBI, ...), in which case this question becomes even harder, but: Q1: What does the site you link to add to this page, that is not already covered in the other databases (see also 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic_acid, where you also added the link and where there are already a large number of databases linked, and also many other external links) - what does this page add that the others don't have? Also note, it may be that some of the other links are also already superfluous, and could/should be removed, but that is not the question.
  • Although this also goes for the external link to pesticideinfo.org that is here on Tebuconazole, Q2: what info does this page you want to link to have which actually can be used to expand the document? And if so .. can we/you actually expand the document using the link you added, and use the site as a reference for that data?
  • Bit related to the previous - you also added the link to 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic_acid, a page of 21,579 bytes (before your addition), containing 33 unique references. That is a lot of data, text and references which are already there. Although there are some external links there for which the same may be true .. Q3 what do you think that the external link you added adds to the content that is already there.
  • It does not lay in Wikipedia's target to link to all external databases available. However, sometimes certain databases do deliver a good entry supplementary to the other ones, even if all those already overlap. Q4: Do you think that the database you are linking to would actually be a good extension to add to the relevant {{chembox}}es (and maybe some {{drugbox}}es) - those are the infoboxes on the top right on most/all pages about chemical compounds - see the identifier section there??

Especially for Q4 - which will need further discussion, I'd suggest to bring it to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Chemicals - maybe Wikipedia:WikiProject Pharmacology is also interested for certain compounds - but I presume you are working from a big external list. If that proceeds, I would be interested in having a full list of the data you have in your database. I am regularly incorporating identifiers into the infoboxes, and I may be able to efficiently link to a lot of data in the database you are using.

Dear Dirk Beetstra,
Thanks for your quick response. To answer your first 3 questions, while we think there is some overlap with our information we truly believe we offer additional information regarding the product's manufacturers and formulators. We have not seen any other sources that provide a comprehensive list that we do.
To answer your last question, we feel the ideal placement for the link is under the external links heading.

The main target of Wikipedia is the knowledge, not the links to all the manufacturers and formulators. And also there you overlap greatly with other databases - sure, yours might be the most complete, but finding manufactures and formulators is not the target of Wikipedia anyway (and that list is a) never complete anyway, and b) volatile/changing). The first one I saw, 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic_acid .. well, there it really does not add much more than maybe a set of extra manufacturers/formulators - but though it is information that will never end up in the article itself, I also doubt that many readers will be looking for it via Wikipedia; that is what the Yellow pages are for, and guess what Wikipedia not is. --Dirk Beetstra T C 15:53, 8 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

After revisiting the “Carbendazim” page, we have determined that much of the information we have on these compounds may well be too specialized for Wikipedia. However, we did identify two fundamental datapoints that your articles do not include, which we suggest could enhance the value of your article(s). For the Carbendazim example, those datapoints are:


• Common Name: Carbendazim (BSI, ISO-E); Carbendazime (ISO-F); Carbendazol (JMAF/MAF)

About Common Name: Common name is synonymous with “Also Known As,” and includes alternative names for a chemical that might stem either fromregional perspectives or “point in time” perspectives. For the latter, is it not uncommon that these chemicals are commonly known by one name and then over time become more commonly known by some variation of that name.


• Mode of Action: Mitosis and cell division.

About Mode of Action: Mode of Action is a critical piece of information with regard to pesticides. It is widely used by farmers, agricultural consultants, and regulatory people alike. In lay terms, it tells how the product works. Pesticides are effective through a variety of means – they may inhibit reproduction, feeding, physiological development, or any manner of processes linked to the success of the pest organism. Mode of action is particularly critical for the avoidance of resistance. When chemicals with the same mode of action are overused, pest populations can quickly become immune as individuals with in populations - that have mutations that render the pesticide ineffective - survive and proliferate through natural selection. These immune individuals grow in numbers until the entire population exhibits the resistant trait.

These two datapoints seem to fall under the kind of information located in your “Infoboxes.” However, this data does not appear to be editable.
