Thanks for the note, I'll try to be there more regularly. And well done for resurrecting some of the stronger points from earlier discussions of FPC page rearrangements. Btw, WP is very slow for me today - has that been a problem generally? With seasonal greetings, Papa Lima Whiskey (talk) 10:21, 26 December 2010 (UTC)

Could you perhaps delete the now-empty page at File:American buffalo proof vertical edit.jpg for me? It had an FP star that's been moved to the currently used File:2006 American Buffalo Proof Obverse.jpg and File:2006 American Buffalo Proof Reverse.jpg. I also wondered if you'd be interested in maybe picking one or two of the marine snail articles that Llez has Commons FPs for, and expand them enough that they could be nominated at FPC on en. These are the articles: Bolinus cornutus, Cassis cornuta, Siratus alabaster, Lambis millepeda. Also wondering what your plans are with Nhobgood images - various people seem to be picking them off one or two at a time, but there's no coherent effort as yet. Papa Lima Whiskey (talk) 17:20, 1 January 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply and notification. Article looks good - well-sourced! I'm not sure how much time I can give to thinking about fruits and the coordination of Nhobgood noms, but I'll try to keep it in mind and get back to you at some point. Happy New Year. Papa Lima Whiskey (talk) 12:01, 3 January 2011 (UTC) PS: Fruit nom just in.

DYK

Hi Maedin, starting yesterday, if you already have 5 DYK credits then you need to review a hook in the T:TDYK queue before your's can be promoted to the main page. I've reviewed yours but can you review one when you have the time and not this underneath you nomination once it is confirmed? By the way, if you get details from google books (as I assume the tyrian purple fact was) then this tool is very useful at making references and saving you time. SmartSE (talk) 22:52, 2 January 2011 (UTC)

Hi Smartse, thanks for the note, I hadn't been aware of the new requirement until I nominated Bolinus cornutus today. I left a note there now to say I've reviewed a nomination.
Thanks also for the link to the google books tool, that will be useful! Maedin\talk 00:10, 3 January 2011 (UTC)
No worries, apologies for my earlier apostrophe crime (your's). SmartSE (talk) 11:38, 4 January 2011 (UTC)
Your Featured picture candidate has been promoted
Your nomination for featured picture status, File:Maasai woman with stretched ears.jpg, gained a consensus of support, and has been promoted. If you would like to nominate another image, please do so at Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates. Makeemlighter (talk) 15:41, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

Will you close this nomination, please? Thanks. Makeemlighter (talk) 21:13, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

Sure! Sorry, I haven't been paying much attention to closures recently, might have taken me ages to notice it, so thanks for the ping, :) Maedin\talk 21:26, 4 January 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. We've been covered for the closures lately, but Juju and I both voted on this one - quite a coincidence considering how infrequently I vote! Thanks again, and Happy New Year. Makeemlighter (talk) 21:58, 4 January 2011 (UTC)
FYI, I created a delist archive for 2011 and moved that nomination there. Makeemlighter (talk) 21:58, 5 January 2011 (UTC)
Sorry, I should have realised it needed a new archive. Oops, Thank you for fixing it for me. Maedin\talk 07:43, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

William Buelow Gould

Hi Maedin.

Thanks for the review - it was starting to get a bit old there. :) Yeah, am fine with the new hook. I think DYK is really just a way to get some increased early traffic to an article and maybe a few more links in, so whatever reads most easily is good (it possibly should have an 'in' or 'of' in the "to the penal colony Van Diemen's Land" as it wasn't just one big prison colony and there were many free-settlers by then, but I think it gets the message across; it's already in the queue now, so probably too late to change it). It was my first nom there BTW.

I was going to add the picture of Gould as you suggested (had it all written out in the nom) but ended up pulling back based on the licensing. I think it's the self-portrait, but unfortunately couldn't find an actual site that listed both the pic and its name/date so thought just to be safe we better not put it on the mainpage. I have seen the self-portrait in person, but it was many years ago now and I can't remember.

BTW have just received permission from the Tasmanian Archive and Heritage Office to publish some of his work on Wikipedia (I was actually hoping to get it before it went to DYK, but they've been on holidays). They're pretty high res unlike the version of the portrait I've got. Technically I think they'd be out of copyright, but it's good to have the official permission. Do you know whether that should go through an OTRS?

Cheers, --jjron (talk) 03:21, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

OK, thanks. Didn't think I could edit that page to change the hook myself, maybe admins only? Was thinking of doing an admin run just so as not to be limited in simple things like that. Heh, no wasn't taking it particularly personally with it lingering, thought if it gets in good, and if not, doesn't matter... Good idea, will drop Milburn a note. Thanks, --jjron (talk) 13:34, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

ACC Account Suspended

Hi Maedin! I received the notification in my email that my ACC access had been suspended from lack of use. I had intended to be an active participant on the ACC team. However, I noticed that every time that I went on IRC using the link provided by User:Stwalkersterwebchat — it publicized my IP address, mainly because one cannot use an IRC cloak connecting via that route. I understood that the solution to this was to acquire an IRC client, and an IRC cloak, and connect to the IRC using the other link provided by Stwalkerster — irc://chat.freenode.net/#wikipedia-en-accounts.

Unfortunately, that was where my difficulty began: I could not figure out which freeware/shareware client to use with Microsoft Internet Explorer (MS IE). I thought I could use ChatZilla, but the more I read about it, the less I understood it to be usable in MS IE. You can see elsewhere that I’ve explored this dilemma before.

If you have any suggestion as to the right/best client for me to use with MS IE, I’d like to return to doing ACC work. Thanks! — SpikeToronto 21:20, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

Hallo, I've unsuspended you now, so that you can use ACC as soon as you get your cloak.

Your main issue here is not whether you are using a webchat service or an IRC client. You'll notice on the login page of the webclient that Stwalkerster linked you to that there's an option called "Auth to services". Clicking this allows you to enter your cloaked username and password (once you have one), and you then join the channel cloaked, and no one can see your IP address. (I think this simplicity actually makes it easier to use than ChatZilla, which I've always found a little over-complicated, not being much of an IRC user myself, :P)

Do you already have a nick registered with the freenode network? If not, that's where you need to begin, I think, see here: [1]. It's painless.

Then you definitely need a cloak; I take it from the conversation you linked that you've already read the guidance on cloaks at Meta. Make your request here: [2]. I remember it used to take a long time for cloaks to come through, I'm not sure if this is still the case or not. The interface looks different from what I recall and it may be that it's more reliably maintained now? I guess you'll find out!

Once you have been informed that your cloak is in place, I think you should be able to "Auth to services" and enter the channel cloaked. If it doesn't work for your "first time" though (it should, but just in case), you'll have to enter the channel, IP revealed, and then type /msg nickserv identify <your password>. That will "identify" you and enact your cloak for as long as you remain in that session. Next time you log in you'll have to identify in the same way again (unless you use "Auth to services", which is obviously better).

As for IRC clients, please do not pay! I understand that mIRC was recommended to you, but there's really no need to pay for a client, there are many good free ones. I've used ChatZilla most often because I use Firefox, but I recommend Pidgin. It's open source, free, browser-independent, easy to use, and integrates with loads of different networks: Pidgin. It's simple to enter channels wearing your cloak, but then it is in the webclient, too. You can try both once you have your cloak and see which you prefer.

Hope this helps, feel free to ask more questions if you need to. No guarantee that I'll be of use, but I try!  :) Maedin\talk 22:24, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

Wow! That’s amazing advice!! I will read it all again at the beginning of the week. It’s just that it’s 12:45AM here now … I love that I do not have to use an IRC client. I was wondering what the “Auth to services” box was for! I’ll go through your instructions step by step this week. It’ll be great when my IP is hidden. It seems my ISP doesn’t change them very often. I’ve had the current one well over a year and really do not want to be trackable. What might happen if people could find that I’m in Toronto?! Thanks again! — SpikeToronto 05:50, 9 January 2011 (UTC)
UPDATE:  I was so excited about all this information, that I decided to get going on it now. So, I registered my nick. Then I started making the cloak request, only one part would not work for me. When I send this string, /msg MemoServ send wmfgc IRC cloak request, I get the following message: MemoServ- You are not logged in..

I tried it on the following channels: wikipedia-en-accounts, wikipedia, and MemoServ. Same response each time. Any advice? Thanks! — SpikeToronto 06:51, 9 January 2011 (UTC)

I think the problem is that you had not already identified before sending the msg to MemoServ. You need to use your nick registration info and send /msg nickserv identify <your password>. You should then see a response: You are now identified for SpikeToronto. It has to know that you're the owner of the registered nick. Once you've done that, try sending the msg to MemoServ again, and you'll probably get The memo has been successfully sent to wmfgc. Let me know if identifying first does the trick or not, :) If not, we'll have to think of something else! Maedin\talk 09:11, 9 January 2011 (UTC) PS I wasn't very clear when I made my first response last night. I made it sound like you would be identifying for the cloak, and logging in with "cloak details". That's not really the case, it's all based on the nick information. You're identifying for the nick only, but the cloak is (will be) associated with your registered nick, which is why logging in ("identifying") enables it. (I think, ) Maedin\talk 09:22, 9 January 2011 (UTC)
Worked like a charm! I received MemoServ- The memo has been successfully sent to wmfgc. As for your postscript, I understood what you were telling me! I knew it wasn’t about the cloak yet. You were quite clear. I’ll let you know how things progress. Thanks again! — SpikeToronto 19:04, 9 January 2011 (UTC)
You're welcome. Glad it worked, :) Maedin\talk 19:42, 9 January 2011 (UTC)
Still haven’t got my cloak. I know, I know. It’s too early. I’m just so excited since you unlocked the secrets of IRC cloaks for me! Guess I should be patient and do some backlogged editing on my to-do list while I wait.… Thanks and keep your fingers crossed! — SpikeToronto 00:27, 12 January 2011 (UTC)
Consider them crossed! You'll have your highwayman/Strider/Invisible Harry Potter/Dagger/Little Red Riding Hood/ holocaust cloak in no time. (pick your favourite, :p) Maedin\talk 08:27, 12 January 2011 (UTC)
Harry Potter! — SpikeToronto 08:39, 12 January 2011 (UTC)
Totally. My first choice, too, :) Maedin\talk 06:38, 13 January 2011 (UTC)
Still don’t have cloak. Should I follow up? Or, is it still too soon to be worrying? Thanks! — SpikeToronto 21:29, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
Have you logged into IRC to check if the cloak is active now, or are you waiting to be informed? I don't think they give notifications, so I would test it by logging in. If it's still not in place, I'd pester them by now (as I think they suggest it takes about a week for cloaks to come through). Maedin\talk 13:05, 21 January 2011 (UTC)
Ah! I thought I would be getting a notification either on my talk page or through email. So, I will give the IRC a try. Lemme scroll up to where you told me how to do it … Btw, how far to the right do you think we can go before one of us outdents?! Thanks! — SpikeToronto 20:34, 21 January 2011 (UTC)

Had to outdent to fit in what I am about to put on your page. Sorry I ruined the test. Anyway, I just went on to IRC and received this response:

[15:35] NickServ- You are now identified for SpikeToronto.

[15:35] == wikipedia/SpikeToronto is now your hidden host (set by services.)

[15:35] -MemoServ- You have 1 new memo.

[15:35] -MemoServ- To read them, type /msg MemoServ READ NEW

[15:35] == gateway/web/freenode/ip.xx.xxx.xx.xxx is now your hidden host (set by syn.) [Actual IP address removed]

[15:35] == wikipedia/SpikeToronto is now your hidden host (set by syn.)

The way I interpret that, I am now cloaked. Would you agree? Thanks! — SpikeToronto 20:50, 21 January 2011 (UTC)

P.S.  By the way, the memo referred to by MemoServ was: wmfgc has read a memo from you sent at Jan 09 18:59:56 2011, which most likely was the memo one has to send as part of the acquiring-a-cloak process. — SpikeToronto

I'm glad you outdented, because I wouldn't have given in, ;) Yes, you now have a cloak! The wikipedia/SpikeToronto is the important part. Congratulations! I'm sorry I didn't answer your message from the 18th sooner, your cloak may have been in place for a while. Enjoy your newfound invisibility, Maedin\talk 22:23, 21 January 2011 (UTC)
Don’t worry about not getting back to me sooner. I knew you’re very busy and there was no urgency on my part. As for the outdent, I was hoping we’d have reached a point where the text was practically vertical! Alas, it was not to be … sigh. On the other hand, I now have a cloak! Harry Potter, ya ain’t so special anymore! :) — SpikeToronto 01:33, 22 January 2011 (UTC)
Uh-oh. I happened to re-read my first response to you and just realised I said, "Once you have been informed that your cloak is in place..." No wonder you were waiting. I was pretty sure that notifications weren't given, so I have no idea why I said that. Sorry to have been misleading and careless! Clearly not a brainy Hermione, Maedin\talk 12:37, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
To be honest, I’d not remembered that you had said that. It just made sense to me that one would be informed since, otherwise, one would have to keep logging in — revealing one’s IP address — to check if one were cloaked. Anyway, it’s an interesting procedure. There’s no interaction with a named person. It’s as if I prayed to the gods atop Mount Olympus and they answered my prayers! (There’s a first time for everything, I guess …) ’Tis all done now. And it never would have happened without your patient help. Thanks! — SpikeToronto 20:39, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
Agreed, it does make sense to be informed. However, I bet there are other methods of finding out if you're cloaked or not that don't involve revealing your IP. You don't have to log in directly to a channel where others can see you, for example. Ah, yeah, I've just tried the webchat link and if you remove the channel before logging in, it works fine and it's just you and freenode, no users around. Sorry, I should have thought of that before, :-\ Rats, that's my fault, :( I knew you could but for some reason thought it might not work on the simple webchat client and didn't even bother to check. Eeeep. Maedin\talk 07:31, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

DYK for Großbottwar

The DYK project (nominate) 00:02, 10 January 2011 (UTC)

Heh, didn't know you spoke German? Did your travels sweep you to the wine road, or how come you wrote an article on that one-horse town? :) Amalthea 00:47, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
No, unfortunately, I don't know German yet, I so wish I did. I am studying it at the moment—getting somewhere, but too slowly. Combination of reasons for wanting to know the language, heritage and craving a move to the Continent amongst them, :) The translating helps me learn, but shame I don't get any uni credits for the work!
The picture of the Rathaus was up at FPC and it was mentioned that the Großbottwar article was a sad little stub. I happened to notice that there was a lot of content on de.wiki and just got stuck in. Still have loads more to do with the article but I don't have time at the moment. Too much uni work.
Anyway, I'll have to make a point of visiting Großbottwar now, right? Any excuse to travel a Weinstraße! Maedin\talk 08:33, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
I guess so, as the resident expert on Großbottwar … Rahter mundane explanation though, I was kinda expecting something more exotic than "stumbled across it on-wiki". :)
Cheers, and have fun studying The Awful German Language, Amalthea 14:50, 10 January 2011 (UTC)

I took the Storch to the Portal:Germany (the one picture in the DYK section, until the next one shows up), very impressive! In case you write more on German topics, feel free to move a DYK fact there yourself and also archive the article. How do you like the de:Killingerhaus? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:59, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, Gerda, it looks good there, :) I'll try to remember the portal for future German DYKs (and shame I hadn't added Saint Paulin Church and Erlebnispark Tripsdrill). The Killingerhaus is beautiful—definitely needs an article on en.wiki! Would be interesting to write about, too. Maedin\talk 19:37, 10 January 2011 (UTC)

Theodore Le Martin

Hi Maedin,
Can I beg a favour from you, please. The title of the article Theodore Le Martin is a mangled FrAnglicisation of a person who is universally/correctly known in France as Léon Lemartin. (Depending on your point of view, the mangling either goes all the way back to the New York Times circa 1910-11, or back to the laissez faire attitude of the French clerk in 1883 who mispelled his birth certificate.)

Idiotically, when I started to expand the article, I immediately created Léon Lemartin as a redirect to Theo, so now I need a friendly admin to

* delete the Leo redirect,
* move the page from Theo to Leo (preserving the history), and then
* set Theo as a redirect.

If you are active this week can you help please. Thanks in advance. Chienlit (talk) 19:30, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

Conversion of old monetary values to modern equivalents

Hi Maedin,

I have a question that I don't even know the right words to use to ask of Wiki or even Google? So I wonder if you or any of your myriad followers know the best way to appreciate/convert old monetary values. Is there a template(s), a table(s), a page(s) that I have never found?

  • How much would 1,000 dollars from 1900 be worth today? .... in dollars? ...in pounds sterling?
  • How much would 1,000 French Francs from 1900 be worth today? .... in dollars? ...in Euros? ...in a working man's wages? ...in loaves of bread?

As you doubtless know I recently wrote that Leon Lemartin was paid '30 francs per flight' but I have no real grasp on whether this was a pittance or a gold mine.

Many thanks if you can help? Chienlit (talk) 13:49, 9 February 2011 (UTC)

Hi, so far Mervyn has kindly suggested "...an "inflation calculator" - ... http://projects.exeter.ac.uk/RDavies/arian/current/howmuch.html ..." which is both interesting and helpful, but not Wiki. I remain hopeful. Regards Chienlit (talk) 21:23, 9 February 2011 (UTC)
A few searches got me in the right direction, but no WP content. Obviously, as stated here: [5], measuring what currency is worth is not very straightforward, as it's more than a value that needs to be considered. However, from what I can gather, 1000 US dollars in 1900 would be worth about $175,000 now, and £13200.00 to £27100.00. All of these calculations depend on which "indicator" is used, which changes the results quite a lot. As for the francs, this website says that in 1910, 1 franc had the value of ~3.7 euros (2007). I didn't quickly find anything relating the old value of francs to current worth though. I thought maybe a good way to compare it would be to find out what other professions earned in francs in the same period, but didn't get much luck there, either. Best I found was this document: http://www.persee.fr/web/revues/home/prescript/article/hism_0982-1783_1995_num_10_3_1562 (in French) which, if you look at page 407, says an iron worker would earn about 300 francs per year in 1865. Sorry, can't help much more than that, Maedin\talk 18:54, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
  • Hi, thanks so far, aaargh. You did really well to find those links in French - I'm impressed. Merci.
Mervyn's link to Exeter University lead me on to http://www.histoire-genealogie.com/spip.php?article398 which says that 1 franc in 1910 is worth 2.6 Euros in 2006. Big difference from your 3.7 in 2007. I have already used 2.6 in the Leo Lem article, but at least I caveated it with 'circa'.
Mervyn's link also lead me on to http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/currency/results2.asp#mid which is great fun because the answer is in moneys, man days, sheeps, wheats, virgins and donuts depending on which year you choose. Ok - so I made up donuts but it is great fun ... oh and I made up virgins but it really is fun. :)
Don't lose any sleep doing more research, let's wait until some insomniac creates a {.{template|year|currency|year|currency|barter Y/N}.} Many thanks. Chienlit (talk) 20:58, 10 February 2011 (UTC)

Haha

video tutorials

Hi Maedin! I just came across an old village pump thread where you were interested in making video tutorials. Is that something you ever followed through with, or something you're still interested in? Wikipedia:WikiProject Screencast started a few months ago to organize the production of those kinds of videos.

Also, have you considered becoming an Online Ambassador? If that sounds like something you're interested in, I encourage you to apply. Cheers--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 17:22, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

Hi Sage, thanks for the message, I didn't know there was a Screencast WikiProject. I am still interested in doing video tutorials and made a start last year, but work, university, and life in general have overtaken me for a while. I haven't had time to do much with Wikipedia at all, let alone time-consuming screen recording, ^^ It also means that although the Online Ambassador programme sounds great and I'd like to be a part of it, I just don't have the availability or a reliable schedule. I appreciate the suggestion though, and will keep it in mind for when life is less hectic! Thanks, :) Maedin\talk 22:53, 27 February 2011 (UTC)

FP pages

You're too modest. I noticed these fixes too. I started doing that almost exactly a year ago. I planned to check every single page, but I got frustrated pretty quickly. I've been trying to check through a page every once in a while. I did this a few weeks ago, and I meant to bring it up on FPC talk. About 2/3 of the way down, you'll see that I removed one completely. That image had apparently been deleted, although I couldn't quite figure out the whole story. I wasn't sure if we needed to change the FP count or if that had already been taken care of when we did our FP count check as we approached 2500. Probably need to ask at FPC talk, but I figured I'd get your opinion first. Best, Makeemlighter (talk) 23:33, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

Yes, I am, :) But I won't change the credit on the Shiva image because that edit actually did take me a while to do!
As for the FP page edits, I meant to do the whole page but eventually found myself skipping around in boredom and then didn't complete it. It's a worthwhile activity though, probably something I'll dip into when I feel like winding down with some menial labour, :P
Looking at the image that has been deleted, it appears to be this upload in a decent resolution. It was deleted in 2007 because there was nothing to back up the PD claim. I would have assumed that Aslan9 was the photographer mentioned by name, but as it doesn't explicitly state that it was considered a copy-vio and just summarily deleted, according to [6]. I'm not sure about the count—I would guess that as the image has been deleted for several years, it will already have been lost from the count. Others might know more though! June 2011

(superdent) This comment is to record that I and another admin [7] judged there was no cause for the block. The block is understood as revoked by the blocking admin, and this serves as informal statement of my opinion that the user, Maedin, may remove the block notice and, at their option, any discussion arising, if they so wish (you may replace this comment with a shortened or appropriately paraphrased version, again at your option). However, I would ask you, Maedin, not to delete the revisions unless necessary or convenient as part of general or for-other-cause cleanup. I would also like to be notified of any discussion arising. Thank you. Samsara (FA  FP) 22:13, 3 June 2011 (UTC)
You have been blocked from editing for a period of 24 hours for edit warring. Once the block has expired, you are welcome to make useful contributions. If you would like to be unblocked, you may appeal this block by adding the text {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first.  Sandstein  20:48, 3 June 2011 (UTC)

During a dispute, you should first try to discuss controversial changes and seek consensus. If that proves unsuccessful, you are encouraged to seek dispute resolution, and in some cases it may be appropriate to request page protection.

You and the other editor have been edit-warring at Alexz Johnson and Jude Harrison over the white balance (!) of the lead image. To get you to stop, I am blocking both of you for 24 hours. After the block expires, you should resolve your disagreement per WP:DR without resorting to further reverts. Some advice: (a) consensus about which version of a picture should be marked as featured is not the same thing as consensus about which version to use in an article; and (b) any consensus or lack thereof is not a justification for edit-warring.  Sandstein  20:49, 3 June 2011 (UTC)

I was not edit warring. Please undo the block. Check the history of the pages. I made two undos and then posted at ANI for assistance. How could that possibly be construed as edit warring? Maedin\talk 20:55, 3 June 2011 (UTC)
(edit conflict) On further consideration, your conduct is not so problematic as that of the other editor, as you reverted only twice on each article. If you agree not to make any further reverts, I'll unblock you.  Sandstein  20:56, 3 June 2011 (UTC)
Of course I'm not going to make any further reverts. That's why I posted at ANI! Please ensure the block is recorded as an error. Maedin\talk 20:59, 3 June 2011 (UTC)
Well, but you posted at ANI immediately after making your second reverts, which is why I am not certain that the block was an error. Also, as an administrator you should know that edit-warring and consensus have nothing to do with each other and that ANI will not resolve content disputes, such about which version of an image is preferable. Nonetheless, I'll unblock you; do you have objections to the following unblock comment? "Block was probably too hasty, editor agrees not to continue to revert".  Sandstein  21:04, 3 June 2011 (UTC)
Seeing as there was no threat that I was going to continue to revert, you could have just, you know, said something or asked me. It's not like I have a problematic history and am prone to edit wars, right? Unbelievably hasty. If I made an error in where I posted/when I posted, it's because I've almost never been involved in a dispute...that was your first clue! I'm not interested in edit warring, I was merely, as an editor, attempting to enforce an already established consensus and would not have taken it any further than I did. So no, I'm not happy with the unblock comment, as you're still implying I actually did something wrong and that I was about to continue! Even according to 3RR, the reverts have to take place within 24 hours. My two undos were four days apart! And then I asked for help. Good grief. Maedin\talk 21:14, 3 June 2011 (UTC)
OK, I've unblocked you with a note that the block was mistaken and the reverts did not rise to the level of edit-warring. Sorry for the trouble. Nonetheless, you should not have repeatedly reverted the other editor simply based on "consensus". As I said, consensus about featuring a picture does not mean consensus about using it in Wikipedia, and consensus does not justify edit-warring (which may occur even below the level of 3RR). Administrators have no authority to force editors to abide by any consensus; instead, such disputes must be resolved via WP:DR (that is, not via WP:ANI).  Sandstein  21:21, 3 June 2011 (UTC)

Let me just say I hope this incident has not marred your commitment to Wikipedia. Admins should not be afraid to step into the fray. Samsara (FA  FP) 21:33, 3 June 2011 (UTC)

For what it's worth, regardless of my opinion of the picture, I consider that block improper. I would like to echo Samsara- I hope this has not affected your view of Wikipedia. J Milburn (talk) 22:33, 3 June 2011 (UTC)

Survey

Hi Julia!

I have put together a survey for female editors of Wikipedia (and related projects) in order to explore, in greater detail, women's experiences and roles within the Wikimedia movement. It'd be wonderful if you could participate!

It's an independent survey, done by me, as a fellow volunteer Wikimedian. It is not being done on behalf of the Wikimedia Foundation. I hope you'll participate!

Just click this link to participate in this survey, via Google!

Any questions or concerns, feel free to email me or stop by my user talk page. Also, feel free to share this any other female Wikimedians you may know. It is in English, but any language Wikimedia participants are encouraged to participate. I appreciate your contributions - to the survey and to Wikipedia! Thank you! The Real Life Barnstar
Hi Julia, it was great to meet you today. I just wanted to say that you were brilliant—Rexx and I really appreciated having an extra pair of hands, and you looked like you were in your element talking people through their first steps on Wikipedia. I hope you enjoyed yourself, and that you'll come along to more events in the future. Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 00:56, 13 November 2011 (UTC)
I don't know how practical it is for you to get to Liverpool next Tuesday, but there's an event being held at Liverpool University (Rexx and I will be there) and I'm trying to recruit more free labour Wikipedians to help out. ;) If you can make it, I'd appreciate it (and I might be able to arrange reimbursement of travel expenses, but I can't promise it). Unfortunately, it's not very practical at all, ^^ I work 9 to 5 M–F and my very precious annual leave goes on either university or an extremely rare actual holiday! I could make it to the meet-up afterwards okay as it's in the evening, but can't help with the event, :( Sorry! Julia\talk 07:53, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

Nice meeting you

Hi Julia, was great meeting you yesterday at the Manchester meetup. Hope to see you at the next one! the wub "?!" 20:52, 11 December 2011 (UTC)

Thanks, it was lovely meeting you and Yaris and everyone else! Julia\talk 18:46, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

Edit warring

I agree with The wub.

Also... You know you were talking about reporting someone for edit warring? What is the correct approach?

I've come across Bill Gaede though STiki. The weird thing is... they ARE talking about it on the talk page... but in the least communicative way possible. They are obviously both newbies because they haven't worked out how everyone else uses talk pages.

Yaris678 (talk) 21:46, 11 December 2011 (UTC)

Let's reincarnate the meetup on-wiki! ;) It was a good afternoon, though, and it's nice to see everyone (and to meet you for the first time, Yaris!).

Anyway. Is the edit-warring disruptive? If it is, you can take it to WP:RFPP and request the page be fully protected for a few days while they work it out on the talk page, or you can take it to WP:ANEW, which is basically a request to have one or both of them blocked to forcibly put an end to the edit-warring. Obviously whichever admin reviews it will make the final decision on what's the best way to put an end to the edit war. Sometimes they fizzle out of their own volition... HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 23:40, 11 December 2011 (UTC)

I think it will probably fizzle out. I am also tempted to go in and ask them to play nicely... and perhaps explain how people normally use a talk page. But these guys seem to not "get" the talk page so much that I wonder if I'd be wasting my effort.
Maybe I'll see how it's looking tomorrow.
Yaris678 (talk) 23:58, 11 December 2011 (UTC)
(edit conflict) If I may be bold and interject here, Yaris, it's a bit more complicated than an edit war. The revision history of Bill Gaede shows the IP addresses 74.131.226.36 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) (Lexington, Kentucky) and 128.163.7.134 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) (University of Kentucky) trying to delete all or part of the article against the efforts of Alexoneill (talk · contribs · logs) and five other users - one of whom, Wknight94 (talk · contribs · logs) is a sysop experienced in vandal fighting. The warring has been slowly going on for a month and it is now necessary to force the participants to actually communicate on the talk page. You may think the IP is completely wrong, in which case you could ask for that IP to be blocked (although they have a university connection to fall back on) or request page semi-protection. If you have no opinion on who is right, then ask for full page protection for a fixed time and make it clear to both sides that some consensus needs to be reached before the expiry. The reliable sources noticeboard is a possibility for getting an outside opinion as this seems a dispute over sourcing.
There is a template {{uw-ew}} that is useful to make sure you are not misunderstood as it covers the issues well. However, I dislike warning templates in general, and prefer in this sort of instance to leave a personal note on the talk pages of the principal players. I've done that for 74.131.226.36 and Alexoneill, as an uninvolved editor. Either or both of you and Julia may want to keep an eye on how this develops. Should the dispute flare up, then there is the edit warring noticeboard where you can make a formal report. Ping me if you think I can be of any more help. Cheers, --RexxS (talk) 00:06, 12 December 2011 (UTC)
Thanks Rexx. I really like those messages you left those users. Hopefully that will sort it out. Yaris678 (talk) 00:29, 12 December 2011 (UTC)
Rexx's advice is sound; I'll keep an eye on the page in case things get out of hand, but on the face of it, it looks like a content dispute, which makes me think a short full (rather than semi) protection might be in order, if only to force the parties to put more effort into communicating. I'll look in more detail on an occasion when I've consumed slightly less whisky. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 01:07, 12 December 2011 (UTC)
