File source and copyright licensing problem with File:Perfil Ale.jpg[edit]

File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:Perfil Ale.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status and its source. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously.

If you did not create this work entirely yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. You will also need to state under what licensing terms it was released. Please refer to the image use policy to learn what files you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. The page on copyright tags may help you to find the correct tag to use for your file.

Please add this information by editing the image description page. If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please also check any other files you may have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 22:14, 26 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Image without license[edit]

Unspecified source/license for File:Alejandro Gortazar.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Alejandro Gortazar.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. Even if you created the image yourself, you still need to release it so Wikipedia can use it. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you made this image yourself, you can use copyright tags like {{PD-self}} (to release all rights), {{self|CC-by-sa-3.0|GFDL}} (to require that you be credited), or any tag here - just go to the image, click edit, and add one of those. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by MifterBot. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. --MifterBot (TalkContribsOwner) 23:05, 26 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Your submission at Articles for creation: Alejandro Gortazar (November 22)[edit]

Your recent article submission to Articles for Creation has been reviewed! Unfortunately, it has not been accepted at this time. The reason left by The Herald was: Please check the submission for any additional comments left by the reviewer. You are encouraged to edit the submission to address the issues raised and resubmit when they have been resolved. The Herald 13:20, 22 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the many (and rapid) responses.

I do take some of the points made. However, there is one that surprises me and has been mentioned twice, that the Youtube video by the Venezuelan embassy, which features comments of the Cuban ambassador and a Cuban scholar of importance (editor of an international journal) is no reliable or independent. Would the same opinion be made of a video posted by the Canadian embassy with interviews of the US ambassador talking about an artist from the US?

Incidentally, I have read in your guidelines that not all references have to be online but then how do you refer to them? like a newspaper that is not online or a tv program or newsreel?

I want to contribute to Wikipedia, yes, but I have started with something I know well, and hope to continue with other Cuba-related articles, unless if there is a problem with this?? I have been meaning to do something to help with the 'severe backlog' but I am finding the whole system difficult to navigate while I'm already skilled at writing. I have also been asked to give my opinion on an article on Ayurveda, and I will (though I do not know so much about this).

Thanks again for your help

Help request[edit]

My article has been declined and I have been asked to check the notability rules and make sure sources are verifiable, I have checked again (already checked before starting the project) and to my mind it is all correct (except if there is a rule on the number of verifiable secondary references that has not been written but editors keep in mind), so any idea as to why has my article been declined will be much appreciated. Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by User talk:Justice4theworld (talkcontribs)

At a glance your sources suffer several flaws. Many do not mention Gortazar in any detail - some do not mention him at all. Others are not reliable, including Wikipedia itself, but also the Venezuelan embassy's YouTube channel. I didn't see a single reliable, indpendent source that discussed Gortazar in some detail. The draft will have to be revised significantly, with the unreliable sources and those that don't mention Gortazar removed, and better sources that discuss him in some detail supplied in their stead. (edit conflict) I have had a look at the article. The first thing that struck me was that it reads like a piece of marketing, containing such wording as "to capture the beauty and perfect balance of nature and wildlife to remind us about the importance of protecting our environment", telling us that Gortázar's "profound understanding of light, colour temperature and definition creates timeless images of ever-changing environments and cultures", and so on. That is enough to make it totally unacceptable as a Wikipedia article, as Wikipedia is not a medium for promotion. I looked further, and found that the lead consists substantially, and perhaps entirely, of content either copied verbatim or very closely paraphrased from pages on another web site, such as 13thegallery.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=59, meaning that it is a copyright infringement, and unacceptable for that reason. I then looked at the sources. There are 25 sources cited as references. A mere glance at the list was enough for my attention to be caught by 2 Wikipedia articles and a YouTube video, none of which is of any value in establishing notability. I took a sample of ten of the remaining 22 cited sources. I found 4 pages which don't even mention Gortazar, a fairly long page which contains a one-sentence mention of him, a page on a self-described "social networking site" for artists, 2 pages advertising exhibitions including works by Gortazar, an announcement that Gortazar was opening a gallery, and a three sentence article about him, which begins with the words "Gortázar dice..." ("Gortázar says..."), and appears to do nothing but express his own view of himself, in glowing terms. None of those does anything whatever to support notability under the terms of Wikipedia's guidelines on notability and reliable sources. (Incidentally, such a large number of references for a new article on a person is usually a sign that someone is desperately trying to give the impression of notability, and is under the mistaken impression that the way to do that is to give as many references as they can find, without regard to how relevant they are.)
I have no way of knowing whether you are generally interested in contributing to Wikipedia, and just happened to start by writing about Gortázar, or whether you are here only for the purpose of writing about Gortázar, because you have some connection to him, and want to make him better known. If you have a general interest in contributing, then I offer you the advice I often give to to new editors, that it is best to start by making small improvements to existing articles, rather than creating new articles. That way any mistakes you make (which you will, because we all do) will be small ones, and you won't have the discouraging experience of repeatedly seeing hours of work deleted. Gradually, you will get to learn how Wikipedia works, and after a while you will know enough about what is acceptable to be able to write whole new articles without fear that they will be deleted. Over the years I have found that editors who start by making small changes to existing articles and work up from there have a far better chance of having a successful time here than those who jump right into creating new articles from the start. If, on the other hand, you are here only to promote Gortázar, and have no interest in doing other editing, then you should be aware that Wikipedia is not a medium for promotion, and that creating an article on a person you have a personal connection to is strongly discouraged by Wikipedia's guidelines on conflict of interest. Hi Justice4theworld, I too noticed basically the same issues the users above mentioned. Most of the sources used sound like press releases, not like actual articles about the subject. This one seemed pretty good though. Basically, Wikipedia requires significant coverage from multiple reliable sources that are independent of the subject. "Significant" for our purposes means in-depth, not passing mentions. Reliable sources would not include press releases or blog posts, generally speaking. Please see the general notability guideline and the specific notability criteria for artists at WP:ARTIST. Editors should be familiar with these criteria and be sure to establish early in the article that the artist meets these criteria. Hope that helps!
