ISO 963-6

Hi Justin,

I see you're adding ISO6 codes to some of the language articles. That's fine when they have no ISO3 code, but I worry it might be problematic otherwise. The people who developed the ISO6 standard are completely ignorant of comparative linguistics, so they aren't a reliable source. The web site is broken, and has been ever since it went up, so it's not a very useful source either. Also, listing several codes without explanation of how they differ, as you did at Xiang Chinese, is not helpful to our readers, nor is repeating the ISO3 code in the ISO6 field. I think it's probably best to be cautious in adding ISO6 codes; maybe you could start a discussion at WP:LANG if you're planning on putting a lot of time into it? (On the other hand, there are cases like Manx, where ISO6 makes a useful distinction between historical and revived Manx.)

Also, please don't remove "none" from the ISO3 field. It's there to indicate that the language is not covered by an ISO code. Removing it will generate errors that will just need to be reviewed and fixed.

Taishanese section of your userpage

Hi Justin! Impressive userpage you've got there—I wished I had even superficial knowledge of every one of the languages you've included.

I have just a minor suggestion to the Taishanese section: I think the Taishanese pronunciation for 大家好 should be

ai` ga>- hao- and ai32 ga215 hɔu55

instead of

ai` ga' hao- and ai32 ga33 hɔu55

(as well as corresponding corrections for the other two romanisations).

The only dictionary-like entry I could find to back this up was the Defense Language Institute course, where it notes a changed tone on 家 in its transcription for 大家 that sounds like /ka215/ (a changed low falling tone) instead of /ka33/ (mid level tone). This also happens to be similar to how Stephen Li transcribes 大家 in his transcription of the course, which is [?ai32 ga215].

Anyway, it's good to see you on Wikipedia as well as Wiktionary. I still have a preference for the latter, though. Feels cosier. Chagneling (talk) 09:23, 25 June 2017 (UTC)

Question

Hi Justin, I'm almost finished working on the Langgan page, and have a question about an Infobox Chinese display problem with two seal characters. Both 琅-seal.svg and 玕-seal.svg are visible on computers, but only 琅-seal.svg on (at least my) mobile devices. Do you have any idea why the mobile m.wikipedia would only show one graph? A reason to unblock me from Wiktionary

Hello,

Look at the page for 雄踞. That quote there needs to be added to 東亞, 廣土眾民, and 大國.
And why is 大國 not in Category:zh:Geography, as it needs to be?
Besides, 吳國 really should be in Category:zh:History of China and Category:zh:Places in Romance of the Three Kingdoms, 二七大罷工 ought to be in Category:zh:Two and Category:zh:Seven (cf. 二二八事件), and 再拜 needs to be in Category:zh:Body language. Furthermore, that untranslated passage on 被髮, 孔子, and 老聃 needs the James Legge translation "Confucius went to see Lao Dan, and arrived just as he had completed the bathing of his head, and was letting his dishevelled hair get dry." (It's from here.)

Yes, I know you blocked me from editing my own talk page because of me refusing to stop pinging you, but the point I'm trying to make here is that if I weren't blocked from Wiktionary, I would make those edits myself. And these proposed edits aren't even disruptive, are they?

Besides, what do you think of my idea for Wiktionary to have a "Draft" namespace (like Wikipedia already does)? Personally, I hope it's not too disruptive, as the tentative entries created won't exactly be in the "Main" namespace, and furthermore, other editors should hopefully be able to review them.
In fact, I suppose there should be a requirement made that if someone creates a draft, no one (draft-creator or otherwise) will be able to publish it in the Main namespace until a knowledgeable editor gives feedback (or, instead, simply publishes the needed entry in the Main namespace). See, that way, there might still be a backlog of uncreated entries, but at least several of them will be easier for a knowledgeable user to create.
Think of it this way: Per WP:Stub Makers, it is NOT inherently disruptive for someone to create a bunch of stub articles on Wikipedia, provided that they provide "an accurate and precise description of the article['s subject] with at least one reference cited". (Why doesn't Wiktionary have its own equivalents of the WP:REALPROBLEM and/or WP:BUILDER essays??)

Anyway, I still really wish you had emphasized how much of a complete waste of your time it was for you to rewrite my inaccurate entries when giving me warnings about my inaccurate Chinese definitions. See, I thought that your problem with my editing was simply the fact that my Chinese definitions were off, but that was sort of belied by 3 things (or rather, your warnings' effects were diminished by 3 things):

1. Those entries were always rewritten (or refined, or whatever) within (usually) a day or two.

2. None of those entries seemed to create any WP:CITOGENESIS or anything, quite unlike, say, the Jar'Edo Wens hoax.

3. There's also (of course!) the fact that I never knew those particular entries were subpar until you pointed them out to me on my talk page. (I really wish you and RcAlex36 had mentioned me in the edit summaries whenever correcting my edits.)

Oh! I forgot to mention: Fipplet was given a permablock for block evasion (and he had an actual sockpuppet account, Livetsord). Yet some time later, he was given a second chance and unblocked. And FYI— here's some actual logged-out editing (and on WP too, even though I've never been blocked on WP) that I did the very first time I was blocked from WT, in January 2019.
Now here's a question for not just you but also @Fytcha, Svartava, Surjection, Chuck Entz, Eirikr, Metaknowledge, Geographyinitiative, Rua, Tooironic, and Poketalker:
Why on Earth didn't anyone submit that to WT:CU back then???

@Shāntián Tàiláng: Note that I don't know enough about your language to judge the edits and neither I'm going to get involved in that part. For the blocking part, it's totally legitimate to edit from your IP, an alternative account, or even an undisclosed or secret alt; just that one should not edit while blocked on their one account/IP, i.e. not evade a block, or double vote; you evaded the block, hence you were given a longer one; the first time, it could have simply gotten missed or people didn't care about it enough to immediately give a longer block... As for the second chance, I'm sure you would also get one if you also learn from the mistakes and not try to make more unblock requests and come back for it a year later or so. From what I have seen, things like "this was my coworker" don't usually work, whether correct or wrong, if there was a checkuser investigation confirming it (which I cannot see, although I think it may be useful to allow some other non-checkuser groups to see the log). My advice is to be patient, wait for a good amount of time, then try getting a conditional unblock or so and make good edits (I think there was any Wikipedia article on such cases too, although I do not remember). Again, I can't judge the edits, blocks, or anything like that. --Svartava (talk) 15:47, 15 March 2022 (UTC)

@Svartava: Thanks, but I have to hand it to you, that would be a lot easier for me if I had an ISP with time-travel capabilities like the Superphone in Doctor Who. That way, I'd be able to make an unblock request one year into the future. (Or, if I were a WP admin, block an IP range before someone even thought of using that range to evade a block, and maybe that would negate any reason that a longer block was later given. Assuming, of course, that there wouldn't be a grandfather paradox.)
