Topic[edit]

Transcendentalism and Literature Jwill74 (talk) 00:03, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

List of Contributions[edit]

  • I am going to create a literature article for the Transcendentalist page as there is none currently. I will provide an overview for literature during this time and then link articles of specific transcendentalist authors of the time to the article.
  • There needs to be a more concise Literature section added to the page.
  • There's a section devoted to Emerson on the Transcendentalist page that is standing alone. This is an issue due to the fact Emerson was not the only Trnscendentalist author at this time. Under my new Literature article, I will link the Emerson section
  • There is no specific talk about Emily Dickinson, Jack Alcott, or Thoreau-these will also be linked to the Literature link I am creating.
  • There needs to be a discussion as to what Transcendentalism is correlation to how it affected literature at the time.

Peer Feedback[edit]

  • Appearance: You do a good job of posting your topics and list of contributions. You seem to know how to work Wikipedia well (i.e. bulleted points, headings) I would add some internal links to existing articles in your "list of contributions" that way a link can be taken directly to the page in which you are going to be working. Otherwise I have to search for the page and am unsure if this is the exact page you are discussing.
  • Neutrality Proposed edits meet Wikipedia neutrality guidelines. You make reference to adding links to existing articles and ensuring that the articles are properly cited. However, I would also add internal links. Ejenn2 (talk) 02:17, 17 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Notability Jwill74 proposed edits meet the guidelines of Wikipedia's notability guidelines. Each topic does warrant its own article. Be sure that there is not already other articles like you one you are proposing to add in another area of Wikipedia.
  • Redundancy I could not find any other articles labeled "literature and transcendentalism" on Wikipedia, but there needs to be more information about exactly what you are going to add to the article to be sure you are not repeating information already stated.
  • Relevance Edits appear to be relevant to American Literature
  • Focus Your edits are vague and need to be narrowed down. Ex: Which Emerson article are you going to provide a link for? What specifically is going to be your focus under the new literature section you are adding? Clarification is needed on the proposed edits. Ejenn2 (talk) 17:41, 17 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Summary[edit]

As I read through the Wikipedia article on Transcendentalism, I realized they did not make any mention of the effect Transcendentalism had on literature. While the page does have brief topic heading on Emerson and Thoreau, there's no tie in to any other transcendentalist authors or how the literature being published at the time affected society. I have been working on an article for this literature section and attempting to move the Emerson and Thoreau headings underneath the literature section. I will also be making mention of the other authors who contributed their support to the transcendentalist movement; Whitman, Melville, and Dickinson. I will add my research under this article about what the literature during this time was urging society to do. I will be editing the transcendentalist page, and linking to it the pages on Emerson,Thoreau, Melville, and Whitman. This first link is to the Transcendentalist page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transcendentalism. The next links are to the different writer pages. Under the heading 'Major Figures', I will be linking Thoreau's page as well. the literature section will be focused on discussing how the writers of this movement helped perpetuate the transcendentalism. You've definitely identified some work that needs to be done on the Transcendentalism article, Jwill74. However, many of the authors you mention here are actually listed under "Major Figures" on this page (Whitman and Dickinson, for example), so it's not clear to me exactly what you are proposing to edit. I do agree, however, that some more historical contextualization, as well as more information on how literature of the time reflected and perpetuated transcendentalist ideas, is missing from this page. This is work that you could definitely perform, but make sure you back everything up with scholarly sources and citations. Finally, you still seem to be struggling with how to insert internal links (i.e. links to other Wikipedia articles) in your writing correctly. Please see the markup sheet provided in class or online guidance provided by Wikipedia for help. Nadinecross78 (talk) 21:07, 3 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
