- It's been a long four years and it's going to be a rough period up until January, and I think I will be happier taking time off from sysopping. I am starting to sense my PTSD nagging away (thinking through the implications of the blatantly illegal unilateral withdrawal from Open Skies, followed by destroying the planes, in the context of the Flynn pardon - it is starting to look like the worst predictions of burning the house down and taking a shit on the carpet before leaving will play out). I don't need stress right now. One of my adult sons is furloughed due to being in a high risk group, the other is an Army officer whose partner is a nurse, and we are approaching Christmas, which I always dread but this year feels markedly worse. Seeking help regarding self-published sources, lulu.com and xlibris
Greetings JzG,
I am requesting asistance regarding the use of sources published by Xlibris and Lulu.com. Can you tell me whether or not these two examples are appropriate?
In the first example, see this quote from the blond article:
"The Hmong people were historically recorded with blonde hair and blue eyes by the Chinese since ancient times. Their light phenotypes made it easy for Chinese distinguish them.[1]"
^ As you may see from the reference, this book is listed as being published by the UCLA American studies center. However, I went to the link itself, and clicked "About this book", which took me to this page:
However, as demonstrated by the above link, this book is actually published by Lulu.com. Do you believe it is acceptable to use a book published by Lulu.com for biomedical information like the hair color or eye color of human populations, particularly when extraordinary claims are made, such as the presence of blond hair and blue eyes in a southeast Asian ethnic group like the Hmong?
In the second example, see this quote from the Genghis Khan article, regarding historical information about the physical appearance of Genghis Khsn:
"Under Kublai Khan supervision, he ordered Khorisun along with the other entrusted remaining followers of Genghis Khan to make sure that the portrait of Genghis Khan reflected his true image.[2]"
This reference uses an Xlibris source:
It's worth noting that this claim is directly contradicted by the Jack Weatherford reference preceding it, which says that the portrait of Genghis Khan is likely not perfectly accurate. And the author of the Xlibirs source, Lorenzo Currie, is not an established expert or historian, and the reference cited was his first published book. He appears to be employed as a Deputy Sheriff and has no credentials pertaining to history or liberal arts.
I apologize if I have burdened you with this information, but you caught my attention as you seem to have an interest in Xulu/Xlibris sources.
