Motivation

Dutch Indonesian

I am often asked why I choose these Dutch/Indonesian topics to write about. It is very recent that over the past decade, the concept of 'mutual heritage' has gained wider currency. A concept particularly used to refer to the material remnants of colonial encounters and exploits centuries ago, including archives, objects of art, ship wrecks, colonial architecture and interventions by colonising powers in the landscapes of their colonies and vice versa the influence on the coloniser, and increasingly also with regard to both the tangible and intangible hybrid eurasian elements of this heritage.

Mutual Heritage

Virtually by definition, the 'mutuality' emphasized by the concept provokes debate about the nature of colonialism as well as the contemporary drive to preserve its legacies and make these available to a wider public (via wikipedia for instance). After all, just as colonialism is not necessarily best described with the help of the cosy buzzword 'encounter', the supposed reciprocity in the preservation of its legacies need not necessarily serve all parties involved to the same extent. With this caveat in mind, there is every reason to welcome the rising interest in mutual heritage and move beyond the simplistic view of colonialism as "predatory institutions encroaching only through military aggression on the territory and autonomy of helpless but freedom-loving stateless peoples".

Dutch East Indies GA review

Getting GA fr the sake of getting GA doesnt work fr me. These last few edits by SimonTrew were hardly constructive towards enhancing quality. Much of the 'simplifying' was just dumbing down the article and dont get me started on the spelling. --KARL RAN (talk) 08:04, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

The article was dumb when I started editing it earlier this year. It has been a lot of work and politics to get it to where it is now and I think it's GA material. I agree that dumbing it down again isn't the right way forward but you could try to work with the reviewer, engaging him in discussion on the review discussion page. My English isn't good enough to judge these edits unfortunately. But I do appreciate somebody picking up the review and commenting on the article because last time it was speedy-failed for an invalid reason. I also appreciate you joining the editing of this article because it felt pretty lonely there :-) --DeVerm (talk) 13:02, 29 July 2011 (UTC).

Dutch East Indies

Dear Karl,

I took Dutch East Indies under GA review and I rather slipped because I had a wedding to attend, with me as the groom, so I have only just got back to it. So please take my apologies in advance, but also, please can you not edit the article until I have done some gnoming? Since the article has been quick failed before and I am tempted to fail it again, but would prefer that between the variouos contributors and me as the reviewer we fix it up and make it a good article, which it should be. It is very well written and informative, just lots of minor corrections need to be done, and taking WP:BOLD I do them rather than ask one of the authors to do them, as the white rabbit said in Alice in Wonderland, the quickest way to explain it is to do it. So a revert, revoke, undo is fine by me but I am trying to polish it up for GA, and it is not at that quality yet, all I am asking of you is please don't tread on my toes while I am doing so.

Art, Culture and Science aspects of Dutch East Indies

Hi.., could you tweak, make fine adjustments and probably enrichen the intellectual section of Dutch East Indies article. The colonial history of Dutch East Indies was not merely the economic and politics aspect, the intellectual pursue of scientists that interested in nature and culture of Indonesian archipelago is quite commendable. One million people

Dear Karl Ran. I see that you say you verified with the cited UNESCO source that the Dutch East India Company did indeed take over a million people to Asia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Dutch_East_India_Company#I_deleted_amount_of_people_sent_to_asia. According to the article, the source is not a UNESCO document, but a proposal nominating the VOC archives for some or other UNESCO heritage status. UNESCO is not responsible for the content of the application/ proposal. Is that the same source that you encountered? Personally, I find 1 million extremely exaggerated - numbers that size were not seen until migrations to the United States and Latin America. Kwauf's changes.

I wouldn't stress too much. His changes and his explanations don't stack up. As far as I can see, he's effectively deleted two articles "INdo People" And "Indo's in pre-colonial history". That's just not going to stick without consensus, and it won't stand. We'll get it fixed up. Update - I think most has now since been cleaned up. I welcome the editor to explain their proposal's now and seek consensus for any change (or status quo). One question though, in Indo people there are pre-existing links to both:

• Indos in pre-colonial history, and
• Indos in colonial history

Europe 10,000 Challenge invite

Stranger no-king?

Hi Karl,

I don't know if you are still around, but I have a question about the stranger king- theory. The odd thing is that it takes the Dutch VOC relationship with Kandy and Manado as examples, but in the days of the VOC our little republic did not have king... Totok/Peranakan

Dear Karl,

I just edited your article, 'Totok'. Just to clarify: in Indonesia, we use the terms 'Totok' and 'Peranakan' in their original, colonial meaning to this very day, that is to refer to people of relatively 'pure' foreign descent versus people whose ancestry has some indigenous blood. Both terms 'Totok' and 'Peranakan' are not just used to refer to people of European descent, but also people of Arab, Chinese - and even Indian descent, the latter group mostly in Medan). Indos, of course, are by definition also Peranakan!

For example, the present Governor of Jakarta, Anies Baswedan, is a Peranakan Arab; while the pre-communist, Java-born First Lady of China and socialite Oei Hui-lan is an example of a Perankan Chinese. An example of a Perankan European who is still fondly remembered here is Ernest Douwes Dekker, who was a hero of the Indonesian nationalist movement and war of independence. Many areas and streets are named after him.

The Youth Pledge of 1928, considered the beginning of Indonesian nationhood, declares that Indonesia is a country without regard to race or ethnicity and includes people of Arab, Chinese and European descent. Sadly, of course, in practice things were (and still are) rather different.

Hi Karl Bas Sander Ran, since you are the creator of Bersiap Wikipage please keep an eye on abusive conduct by administrator [C.Fred]. Repeated attempts to remove picture of Sutomo were initially done by Indonesian user Jeremy K. Later repeated by a very abusive administrator [C.Fred]. Kindly ask your intervention to uphold relevant image of Sutomo in the Bersiap Wikipage. Also, check the discrepancy of victim count with Dutch Bersiap Wikipage. As these numbers do not match and were also changed/under-counted by Indonesian user Jeremy K.
