I have been busy with this article. You do serious MN articles, as I do serious IA articles. The article, at present dissolves into stupid stuff at the end, but my stuff at the top is approximately good. The past two days have been educational, learning things about all things glacial. Right now, I'm coping with the stuff that makes Fulton, Illinois a continental divide, inasmuch as this is the place that the Upper Mississippi River flows over bedrock. On the I-35W page, you can just let the MiszaBot do its job

Although your Archive edits on Talk:I-35W Mississippi River bridge were useful, its more efficient to tweak the parameters to the MiszaBot and let it do the archiving for you. The reason it didn't run yesterday was that it was wrongly changed Archive back to page 1[2], but that was already well over its maximum size and it wasn't able to create a page 2 as it was already been created. Help me out here

I need an answer to a question, so I went to the talk page for the USS Saratoga (CV-3)...and ya. So here goes-How did she sink? I mean, I know it was at the Bikini Atoll tests with an A-bomb in test Baker, but I've heard (NOT confirmed it) that she flew a half-mile out of the water! before taking 7 1/2 hours to go down. Just want to see if that is true, seeing as I can't find it ANYWHERE on the internet-all they say is that she sunk... Thanks for your help. the_ed17 23:54, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

I’m not sure of the answer to your question. There is a lot of information available on Operation Crossroads. The atomic tests at Bikini Atoll were filmed, and you can find film of the actual explosion. [3][ [4][5] I have never heard that the vessel was lifted out of the water; that seems very improbable, and the films do not show vessels being lifted up.[6] The explosion did create a half-mile wide column of water.

Saratoga did take hours to sink.[7] She rests on the bottom, and is easily accessible to SCUBA divers.[8][9] Many ships survived Able (an air blast) very well, but the underwater test of Baker sank many of them due to underwater damage. I read somewhere that is what sank the Arkansas (or was it Nevada?), and that her hull was smashed, but I don't remember where I saw that. Kablammo 00:45, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

I remembered where I saw the reference to Arkansas. Here's some more information on Crossroads, from Ireland, Bernard (1996). Jane's Battleships of the 20th Century. New York: HarperCollins. pp. 186–87. ISBN 0 0047 0997 7.:

• US capital ships present included Arkansas, New York, and Nevada in addition to Saratoga
• The Able test (an air blast) did little damage to the armored citadel of Nevada only three ship lengths from ground zero
• Baker involved a similar weapon detonated 90 feet below the surface (lagoon was only 31 fathoms deep max)
• As explosion was underwater, the shock was transmitted directly to the hulls, without attenuation
• column of water 1/2 mile wide (this is from another source) went 2500' into the air
• A wave 94' high was measured 1000' away (you can see ships heeling from the wave in the videos)
• Arkansas, 250 yards from center, was "crushed as if by a tremendous hammer blow from below"

There is also a book by Richard Rhodes entitled Dark Sun which contains information on these tests, but I don't believe Saratoga was specifically mentioned. (I no longer have the book.) Nothing I have seen mentions warships being thrown in the air, but the vaporization of much of the water in the atoll near ground zero, a 90'+ high wave, and most importantly the underwater shock wave, caused catastophic damage. Leaf Mountains

My best resource, and the one I use most often, is a book called Minnesota Place Names, A Geographical Encyclopedia. It's published by the Minnesota Historical Society, which claims that it's the best book of its kind anywhere. It's pretty remarkable, compiled by a surveyor and geologist named Warren Upham between about 1910 and 1920, back when a lot of pioneers were still alive to tell the stories of the state. This book describes the Leaf Hills Moraines in Otter Tail County: "running southeast from Fergus Falls to the south line of the county and thence east and northeast to East Leaf Lake, a distance of 50 miles." These hills for the most part haven't been named, but are said to provide views of a three-county area. Do you think this is the range of hills you're describing? If so, I'll scrape together what resources I can find and put up a stub class article which others can improve.Spottacus 00:31, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

Red River Trails: surviving fragments

Kablammo, there are supposedly fragments of the trail still extant. I've run across signs or markers in Ramsey, Minnesota at a roadside rest area, in Breckenridge, Minnesota, and on the side of US Route 2 west of Grand Forks, North Dakota which claim that the trails are still there and visible to the naked eye. Do your resources mention these still-existing segments of trail? Would it be worthwhile to mention them? Spottacus 19:12, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

The sentence you asked about is almost covered in the Hughes MPR article and could be reworded to match. I am wiped after sorting through the Cowles biographies and may not get back to this this morning but I can look later on. No I have not yet seen a bio. Manifest Destiny

I'd say go ahead and restore the material. I glanced at the user who deleted that stuff's contributions and concluded he wasn't a crackpot, so I didn't feel like delving any further into the dispute. But if that editor has a problem with the restoration, it can be worked out on the talk page, as it should have been before it was removed. Yes, I hate when the schoolkids are studying the American West--Oregon Trail is another popular target, though it's Sacagawea who's getting the worst of it lately. I had that article semi-protected again recently. The problem with all the petty vandalism is legit content goes missing and nobody notices for months. I'm still backtracking through the edit history of Sacagawea to find some content that went missing months ago and I don't know yet if it's from a rewrite or because it got vandalized and some well-meaning person deleted it. Gosh I hate when people don't check the page history before deleting vandalism! Anyway, yes, you might see about page protection. Keep up the good work! Katr67 23:25, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

Why do you guys behave and act like machines. You are human, right?

We use standard templates-- they make it go faster. More stilted prose, but most vandals ignore the warnings anyway. They're just given to enable a block, but sometimes the vandals actually pay attention.

Notable Noyes Hall?

Help me out here. What makes this notable? Is every building on the NRHP named after a non-notable former institutional employee happen to be notable? There are dozens of such buildings in that town and more on that campus alone, so it is not unique. It isn't even mentioned on that school's own page, perhaps the best place for a list of its "notable" buildings. If it does belong on the Faribault page, shouldn't it be under a heading other than "institutions" since it doesn't happen to be one? Perhaps under "historic structures" or attached to the deaf school listing on that page? I'm curious, what am I missing here? Vespid 03:53, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

While the standard of notability for mention in an article is not the same as the standard for a stand-alone article,[14] I restored it because of the NRHP listing; there have been a number of articles listed for AfD which have survived because of that listing. (I'll invite someone active with NRHP properties to comment here as well.) As you mentioned, Faribault, Minnesota is rich in such sites, which are a distinguishing feature of the community.

I revised the wording within the main Faribault article, but I think mention of the buildings would be more appropriate within the Minnesota State Academies article. The institution also contains another building listed on the National Register, the Administration Building/Girls' Dormitory. On the other side of Highway 60, the School for the Blind contains an NRHP building, and the State School for the Feeble-Minded has a hospital building listed on the National Register. Three buildings at Shattuck-St. Mary's are listed on the National Register as well. I think listing the individual buildings under their institutions' articles would make it easier to give a more detailed account of their construction and notability, as opposed to doing it in the main Faribault article. The Faribault article could get rather long if details of all the historic buildings (and there are quite a few!) were mentioned. As an aside, I think I might have to go down to Faribault and Northfield this weekend for an NRHP photo tour -- even though I haven't finished Red Wing and Chaska yet. --Elkman ^(Elkspeak) 14:33, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

Also, as far as National Register articles in general are concerned, the general consensus is that any building listed on the National Register is notable enough for a Wikipedia article. The National Register listing process involves a comprehensive nomination form submitted to the National Park Service, and the NPS reviews the submission to make sure it actually fits the criteria. That doesn't necessarily that we have to write one article separately for each NRHP property -- for example, I wrote one article to cover Cuyuna Iron Range Municipally-Owned Elevated Metal Water Tanks, the name of the Multiple Property Submission, even though each tower is separately listed on the National Register. --Elkman ^(Elkspeak) 14:41, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

Crusing On

Hi Kablammo.

This is quite an abstract general speculation. Not really about the Cruise Ship article, but about the goals of Wiki, etc. I've been a little perplexed about what to do with the new crop given the assignment to contribute to a Wiki article. Are these students interested in Wiki or solely in completing their assignments? If students get a negative reception, for example with lots of requests for Wikification, it's liable to create unnecessary controversy.

It seems like DancinChica0514 might stay around. Responsive, pleasant. Great!

But her major source is one book, and she's written a book report about it. She doesn't mention any of the themes in the rest of the article. She doesn't seem to have read or be responding to any of the comments in Talk. (She, personally, seems to be interested in the process, that's not the focus, here.) Wiki can't have a book report inserted into articles for every student who has a class assignment.

What's to be done? It seems that teachers are directing students to use Wiki for teachers' own ends, but that students aren't getting instruction about how to contribute. Since the goal of Wiki is not to provide assistance to teachers, there's a problem. Maybe it will all work itself out, after an excessive number of students complain to teachers that "mean editors" wouldn't let them complete their assignments. But that wouldn't be great for Wiki press. Hmm. Oh, well.

Thanks for the post. Last May a professor at the University of Minnesota had students write Wikipedia articles. See User:1013-josh/archive. For the most part they created new articles and had appropriate guidance from their prof, who had a well-structured approach to the task. After they started, their work attracted assistance from a number of members of the Minnesota WikiProject, which led to a good collaborative process.

What happened here did not appear to have the same degree of oversight (aside from you and me) but the editor was very responsive and did a creditable job. Ordinarily it might have been better to have them start new articles (and her additions could easily stand as one) but this article gets so little attention that the leeway you and I gave her seemed appropriate. But to throw a new editor into Barry Bonds, for example, could be counterproductive, especially if no guidance was given.

I think her contributions could be condensed and sourced to multiple authorities, but of course that will depend on her, or other volunteers, to do the work. But overall it was positive, and we can hope that she sticks around. Kablammo (talk) 23:50, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

I am trying to put together a checkuser request in relation to the "Pee Wee Herman" vandal, with a view to getting the underlying IPs blocked (I have range blocked some IPs used by the vandal(s) with limited success). I am putting together a list of sockpuppets and their edits here. Finally! Finished the tree, shoveled the first snow storm, and looked at Red River Trails and Geology of Minnesota. Both of them have perfectly fine citations, and on the finer points of whether or not to include the underscore for no author and how to alphabetize, I can tell you that I've never encountered anyone on FAC who reviews or cares (except me, and I don't care that much). I don't care for the underscore, but there's nothing wrong with using it. I would alphabetize by whatever you use in the footnote, so the reader knows how to find it. Brown Dog affair came through FAC with a system that used "no byline" when there was no author, which I also thought wasn't needed, but really it doesn't matter. It went to the mainpage without the reference list alphabatical, and no one noticed or cared. What you're doing is fine; the only reminder is to ask Brighterorange (talk · contribs) to run his script to fix your page ranges; the hyphens between the page numbers should be endashes. Another system you can use, if you prefer it, is at History of evolutionary thought, currently at FAC, but I don't think it's necessary to do that much work. What you've done so far is fine. Red River Trails Thanks

Hello. Actually, in regards to your note, I am a new user, but I have written for money and edited magazines, tech documents, etc., for over 35 years (wow, I'm impressed). I've made a few changes to Wikipedia so far, but I'm only doing minor edits, and am trying to stay within the guidelines.

By the way, I have been studying the Red River Trails for some time. I'm planning to do a video on them, once I retire. That's a good map. What I was wondering is, is the Ottawa-Bonnchere Graben just part of the Ottawa Graben? That map and this are not clear to me. See the cite here which shows the Ottawa-Bonnechere Graben as "OBG". That's the same thing as the other map link above. But if the Ottawa Graben were another graben, it's probably part of the Ottawa-Bonnechere Graben system. See here and here as well. Black Tusk 18:34, 15 December 2007 (UTC)

Hello, adding a bit per Kablammo's request. I'm no expert on this, but looking at the papers it seems to me that Ottawa Graben and the Ottawa-Bonnechere Graben are indeed one and the same. The name Ottawa-Bonnechere Graben seems to have originated with Marshall Kay in 1942; the cited ref to Kumarapeli (the 1981 Smithsonian paper) seems to use both names indiscriminately. This fairly recent paper uses the name Ottawa-Bonnechere Graben. And google gets 250 hits on Ottawa-Bonnechere Graben vs. 139 for Ottawa Graben, somewhat to my surprise. So, near as I can tell, they are the same thing, and the name Ottawa-Bonnechere Graben has both precedence as well as greater use. St. Anthony Laboratory

Kablammo, do you live close enough to Minneapolis to join Elkman and Appraiser and me for a tour at the UofM laboratory on the Mississippi in downtown sometime before mid-January? Assuming the UofM has time to give a tour and that any of us can make it. This is not universally considered to be the best time of year but you seem to know a lot about the area. I-35W Bridge

Thanks for your encouragement. I've been an avid reader of Wikipedia for years even though I just signed up for an account and I have a lot of respect for the work people have contributed. Hence, my hesitation to jump in and edit willy-nilly. The i35w bridge article is a good one that I have been following since August and I know a lot of people put a lot of thought and work into it. I guess I'm following the old advice, "Better to keep your mouth shut and have people think you're an idiot than open it and remove all doubt."

In any case, if I make any changes they will be minor. For instance I would substitute "local officials requested Navy divers," instead of the attribution to Sheriff Stanek. I would also re-word the "9-11 technologies" paragraph to say funding provided by the Dept. of Homeland Security enabled municipal, county and state public safety departments to upgrade their radio systems which many credit with the swift and coordinated response to the collapse. I'd leave in the link to the Bruce Schneier article.

It's a Wiki article that is flagged as a "good one" and it's cited by many around the web where the I-35W bridge is discussed; the last thing I want to do is wreck it. There's a faint underlying tone, however, that suggests someone was determined to bring in some connection - any connection - to 9-11. I think that bothered me more than anything else.
