Hello, Kaldari. I wanted to let you know that I’m proposing an article that you started, PageTriageProdTest, for deletion because it's a biography of a living person that lacks references. If you don't want PageTriageProdTest to be deleted, please add a reference to the article.

If you need help doing so, you can leave a note on my talk page.

Thanks, Kaldari (talk) 19:38, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

Designation list colours

I'm not even sure what this edit summary means. We spent weeks discussions to the Designation List template so that the Canadian one could be red. Now the Canadian one conflicts with the provincial one. How do we fix this?--Skeezix1000 (talk) 23:18, 11 August 2012 (UTC)

That doesn't make much sense, since the template uses coloured borders, not backgrounds. Is the colour red now banned? --Skeezix1000 (talk) 23:24, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the advice and for doing your best to fix it. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 00:08, 12 August 2012 (UTC)

Hello, in my ordinary check of Category:Proposed deletions needing attention I noticed you put a prod tag on the subject page. I had tagged it with {{db-user}}, but then undid myself when I realized that you are an admin and have the ability to delete it yourself. Do you actually want this page deleted, or did you just tag it as part of whatever experimenting you were doing at the time? —KuyaBriBriTalk 20:28, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

Sorry, just an experiment that I forgot to clean-up :) Kaldari (talk) 20:55, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

Moving Burma to Myanmar - ongoing poll

This is to let you know that an ongoing poll is taking place to move Burma to Myanmar. I know this happened just recently but no administrator would close these frequent rm's down, so here we go again. This note is going out to wikipedia members who have participated in Burma/Myanmar name changing polls in the past. It does not include banned members nor those with only ip addresses. Thank you. Hi. When you recently edited Bullet Tree Falls, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page San Ignacio (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Hi. Is it appropriate that these[1][2] be classified as sexual assault, in light of how reliable sources define sexual assault? I say no, except for the cases where female genital mutilation is carried out against a female's will. 109.123.115.21 (talk) 18:53, 24 August 2012 (UTC)

But thinking over female genital mutilation again, I can't see how it is sexual assault unless it is performed with sexual/psychological gratification in mind or is defined that way simply because it's the sex organs that are being mutilated. In other words: It is assualt, but the people performing the procedures are not getting sexual/psychological gratification from it; if some do at all, I wouldn't say that it's a usual case. 109.123.115.21 (talk) 19:16, 24 August 2012 (UTC)

WikiCup 2012 August newsletter

The final is upon us! We are down to our final 8. A massive 573 was our lowest qualifying score; this is higher than the 150 points needed last year and the 430 needed in 2010. Even in 2009, when points were acquired for mainspace edit count in addition to audited content, 417 points secured a place. That leaves this year's WikiCup, by one measure at least, our most competitive ever. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:

  1. Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions) once again finishes the round in first place, leading Pool B. Grapple X writes articles about television, and especially The X-Files and Millenium, with good articles making up the bulk of the score.
  2. Wisconsin Miyagawa (submissions) led Pool A this round. Fourth-place finalist last year, Miyagawa writes on a variety of topics, and has reached the final primarily off the back of his massive number of did you knows.
  3. Minnesota Ruby2010 (submissions) was second in Pool B. Ruby2010 writes primarily on television and film, and scores primarily from good articles.
  4. Scotland Casliber (submissions) finished third in Pool B. Casliber is something of a WikiCup veteran, having finished sixth in 2011 and fourth in 2010. Casliber writes on the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. Over half of Casliber's points this round were bonus points from the high-importance articles he has worked on.
  5. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came second in Pool A. Also writing on biology, especially marine biology, Cwmhiraeth received 390 points for one featured article (Bivalvia) and one good article (pelican), topping up with a large number of did you knows.
  6. New York City Muboshgu (submissions) was third in Pool A. Muboshgu writes primarily on baseball, and this round saw Muboshgu's first featured article, Derek Jeter, promoted on its fourth attempt at FAC.
  7. Michigan Dana Boomer (submissions) was fourth in Pool A. She writes on a variety of topics, including horses, but this round also saw the high-importance lettuce reach featured article status.
  8. Canada Sasata (submissions) is another WikiCup veteran, having been a finalist in 2009 and 2010. He writes mostly on mycology.

However, we must also say goodbye to the eight who did not make the final, having fallen at the last hurdle: Russia GreatOrangePumpkin (submissions), England Ealdgyth (submissions), England Calvin999 (submissions), Poland Piotrus (submissions), North Carolina Toa Nidhiki05 (submissions), Florida 12george1 (submissions), Cherokee Nation The Bushranger (submissions) and North Macedonia 1111tomica (submissions). We hope to see you all next year.

On the subject of next year, a discussion has been opened here. Come and have your say about the competition, and how you'd like it to run in the future. This brainstorming will go on for some time before more focused discussions/polls are opened. As ever, if you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! The Tea Leaf - Issue Six

Hi! Welcome to the sixth edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!

  • Teahouse serves over 700 new editors in six months on Wikipedia! Since February 27, 741 new editors have participated at the Teahouse. The Q&A board and the guest intro pages are more active than ever.
A lovely little teahouse nestled in Germany from Wiki Loves Monuments
  • Automatic invites are doing the trick: 50% more new editors visiting each week. Ever since HostBot's automated invite trial phase began we've seen a boost in new editor participation. Automating a baseline set of invitations also allows Teahouse hosts to focus on serving hot cups of help to guests, instead of spending countless hours inviting.
  • Guests to the Teahouse continue to edit more & interact more with other community members than non-Teahouse guests according to six month metrics. Teahouse guests make more than twice the article edits and edit more talk pages than other new editors.
  • New host process implemented which encourages anyone to get started as a Teahouse host in a few easy steps. Stop by the hosts page and become a Teahouse host today!
  • Host lounge renovations nearing completion. Working closely with Teahouse hosts, we've made some major renovations to the Teahouse Host Lounge - the main hangout and resource space for hosts. Learn more about the improvements here.

As always, thanks for supporting the Teahouse project! Stop by and visit us today!

U.S. historic site color templates

Hi Kaldari -- Could you please comment at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places#Standard colors. Your edit of August 11 changing a bunch of colors has been noticed, and it causes some problems, mainly that it obliterates distinctions that were intended. Was your change proposed and discussed somewhere? Can you please explain and/or participate in some discussion now. Hmm, i see above in another discussion section of August 12 that it may have caused problems for Canadian historic sites, too. This is about the U.S. historic sites. WikiLove

Hey, thanks for your help! It worked :)

Now I'm trying to make it deliver a template rather than an image, a la User_talk:OcaasiNew#Congrats.21.21_Here.27s_a_badge.21 but without the silly formatting. Any ideas? Ocaasi t | c 00:17, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

I changed the text parameter to a template call and it worked. However I'm still working on two more aspects:
  1. Being able to leave a custom message in addition to the template, either above or below it
  2. Calling a different template for each sub-type rather than 1 for each type. So there is a [Badges] type and then there might be up 100 subtype Badges. Can I call a different template for each sub-type?
I appreciate your patience, as I have little idea what I'm doing, but I think I learn quickly. Ocaasi t | c 00:44, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

WikiCup 2012 September newsletter

We're over half way through the final, and so it is less than a month until we know for certain our 2012 WikiCup champion. Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions) currently leads, followed by Canada Sasata (submissions), Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and Scotland Casliber (submissions). However, we have no one resembling a breakaway leader, and so the competition is a long way from over. Next month's newsletter will feature a list of our winners (who are not necessarily only the finalists) and keep your eyes open for an article on the WikiCup in a future edition of The Signpost. The leaders are already on a par with last year's winners, but a long way from the huge scores seen in 2010. That said, a repeat of the competition from 2010 seems unlikely.

It is good to see that three-quarters of our finalists have already scored bonus points this round. This shows that, contrary to criticism that the WikiCup has received in the past, the competition does not merely incentivise the writing of trivial articles; instead, our top competitors are still spending their time contributing to high-importance articles, and bringing them to a high standard. This does a great service to the encyclopedia and its readers. Thank you, and good work!

The planning for next year's WikiCup is ongoing. Some straw polls have been opened concerning the scoring, and you can now sign up for next year's competition. Good luck! Notability and indiscriminate collection of information

Hi, this is regarding your recent edits at Gangnam Style and Gangnam phenomenon.

From what I understand from WP:GNG, an article could be considered as notable if there is a significant amount of reliable, 3rd party sources covering it. I think this could be the case for Gangnam phenomenon, because it seems that there have been journalists and authors from different publications and national newspapers around the world that have used the term, I think it could be considered notable, in my humble opinion.

Also, I believe a few sections found at Gangnam Style could be considered encyclopedic, especially the part about celebrity tweets. Several third party sources have claimed that celebrity tweets have been the main reason for the song's success, for example, The Wall Street Journal says that T-Pain tweet "sent [the video] to the stratosphere" and Der Spiegel wrote that the singer owe's his success to Katy Perry's tweet, etc

Taken as a whole, this could be a relevant section that may explain the song's success outside its home country. Also, as per WP:WORLDVIEW, I thought it could be a good idea to include opinions from sources outside the English speaking world, perhaps the list could be shortened a little to exclude some smaller countries, but I think it might be unfair to remove it completely. I think the song's reception in some significant countries such France, Germany, China, India, etc could be included, in my humble opinion.

Also, I have to admit that I've only been editing Wikipedia since 2 months ago, so please do let me know if you have suggestions on how to better integrate all the above information into the article (Other than just long strings of text) -A1candidate (talk) 19:42, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

Unclosing RFC? Highly disruptive!

This goes way beyond WP:BOLD. Just because you're an admin, doesn't give you a right to modify a duly closed RFC. I understand that you dispute that "duly", and that is your right - in a discussion on the talk page, not by de-facto imposing your will. To me, the high-handedness here clearly shows judgment unbecoming an admin. Homunq () 23:15, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

Disruptive? I was just correcting what I thought was a mistake. If the RfC is closed, where is the closing statement? I don't see any evidence of it being closed (other than that template). Kaldari (talk) 00:14, 23 October 2012 (UTC)
OK. The closing statement is on talk. I realize this is irregular and perhaps improper (though WP:AIR applies I think), but things have proceeded significantly and in my opinion productively on the basis of that RFC being closed, so I would ask you to revert your un-closing. Homunq () 02:24, 23 October 2012 (UTC)
Reverted. Kaldari (talk) 21:30, 23 October 2012 (UTC)
I'm trying to figure out why WP:AIR applies here. Perhaps that's not the link you intended? -- RoySmith (talk) 01:09, 24 October 2012 (UTC)
Um... WP:IAR. In that, closing an RFC that is obviously going nowhere is not a reason to call in airstrikes. Homunq () 18:04, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

WikiCup 2012 October newsletter

The 2012 WikiCup has come to a close; congratulations to Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), our 2012 champion! Cwmhiraeth joins our exclusive club of previous winners: Dreamafter (2007), jj137 (2008), Durova (2009), Sturmvogel 66 (2010) and Hurricanehink (2011). Our final standings were as follows:

  1. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions)
  2. Canada Sasata (submissions)
  3. Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions)
  4. Scotland Casliber (submissions)
  5. New York City Muboshgu (submissions)
  6. Wisconsin Miyagawa (submissions)
  7. Minnesota Ruby2010 (submissions)
  8. Michigan Dana Boomer (submissions)

Prizes for first, second, third and fourth will be awarded, as will prizes for all those who reached the final eight. Every participant who scored in the competition will receive a ribbon of participation. In addition to the prizes based on placement, the following special prizes will be awarded based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, the prize is awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round.

Awards will be handed out in the coming days; please bear with us! This year's competition also saw fantastic contributions in all rounds, from newer Wikipedians contributing their first good or featured articles, right up to highly experienced Wikipedians chasing high scores and contributing to topics outside of their usual comfort zones. It would be impossible to name all of the participants who have achieved things to be proud of, but well done to all of you, and thanks! Wikipedia has certainly benefited from the work of this year's WikiCup participants.

Next year's WikiCup will begin in January. Currently, discussions and polls are open, and all contributions are welcome. You can also sign up for next year's competition. There will be no further newsletters this year, although brief notes may be sent out in December to remind everyone about the upcoming competition. It's been a pleasure to work with you all, and we hope to see you all in January! J Milburn (talkemail) and The ed17 (talkemail) 00:30, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

Incidentally enough, I had a previous discussion with another user regarding user e-mail back in May, 2011, but was unable to update my settings at the time. With regard to your other suggestion regarding I plan to do if granted administratorship, do you think I should amend my previous answer? --TommyBoy (talk) 20:51, 11 November 2012 (UTC)
If you feel like there are other ways you could use the admin tools, yes. If not, your existing answer is fine. I only mention it since Risker is of the opinion that the main reason there are so few admin promotions these days is because we don't really need more admins for vandal fighting, but that's just one opinion :) Kaldari (talk) 21:10, 11 November 2012 (UTC)

I have unblocked this editor, in part because you have expressed a willingness to help by mentoring them. I've told them they need to come here for instructions, and that before they do anything that might be questionable (like add external links), they should ask you or myself first. Hi Kaldari, Thanks for believing in me and giving the opportunity to redeem myself. At this point, I think I’ll just spend a couple of days going over Wiki rule and stay away from editing (with the exception of you talk page). I’m probably to traumatized to read a page for fear of doing something wrong. Dennis recommended a few pages and I’ll start with those. Thanks again. I know promises are pretty common in cyberspace—but I won’t let you down. Carlang (talk) 21:35, 15 November 2012 (UTC)

  • I will try to talk page stalk a bit as well, and offer tips when I think they will help. Don't be intimidated, my interest is in genuinely trying to help you pointed in the right direction so you don't have to feel concerned anymore. I prefer being the good guy, and I just use the tools when I am forced to. I'm not quick on the trigger, friend. Stuff happens, the key is taking good advice and moving in the right direction. Editing can be a lot of fun, I've done it for years here. I often start editing, and end up following links to different stuff, wandering all around, find myself fixing spelling or minor things, and half the day has gone by without working on what I started out to work on, yet I got some stuff done that helped. Old military aircraft is one of those weaknesses that can get me reading for hours. Editing is supposed to be fun, otherwise I would have a different hobby. Hi Kaldari,
I was considering making an edit of Wedding Band page. Its a new TV show that aired last week and the page is currently underdeveloped (compared to something else like the Awake (TV show) page. What would you advise?
I was going to use the Awake page and other Tv pages as a guide on construct and tone. Is this a good approach? Or would you recommend that I try working on something else?
One last thing, would working on a page involving the city you're resident in be against the COI? For instance, if I lived in New York, would it be wrong for me to work on the New York page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Carlang (talkcontribs) 06:24, 18 November 2012 (UTC)
Working on Wedding Band sounds like a good idea. For style advice, take a look at Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Television and Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Writing about fiction. Regarding New York, it would only be a conflict of interest if you are promoting something you are personally associated with, such as a company or organization. I'd also recommend not adding any external links until you've read through Wikipedia:External links, as this is frequently looked upon as spamming unless the guidelines are carefully followed. WikiLove customization for WP:Teahouse badges

Hey Kaldari!

So our wikilove customization is going great... except that signatures aren't being added to the posts with Teahouse badges (and the default form instructions say not to include a signature). Here's my code: User:Ocaasi/WikiLoveinstallscript.js. Any idea what I'm missing? Cheers, Ocaasi t | c 02:21, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Hey, Ocaasi, judging from the example at MediaWiki and the default configuration, it looks like the tildes for the signature need to be included within the text field. Writ Keeper 02:39, 3 December 2012 (UTC)
Thanks Writ! I tried adding the tildes using ~~~~, <nowiki>~~~~</nowiki>, and <includeonly>~~~~</includeonly>, but none of them work. All either transposed to a signature on the WikiLoveinstallscript page or delivered as ~~~~ rather than a signature. I see from the Mediawiki example that they jump through similar hoops, although theirs work. Thanks for pointing me to it :) Ocaasi t | c 02:53, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

Points addressed

Hi Kaldari, once again, thank you so much for reading and reviewing Joseph Grimaldi. I have addressed all of your excellent points and would request a re-visit if you have time, to check what I have done. I have also added a lot more about his influence on performers, authors and on the field of clowning from critics and contemporaries for an added benefit. If you agree with my changes and are happy with it please use bold text to either Support or Oppose. Many thanks! -- CassiantoTalk 21:35, 7 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi. I saw that you made this change. I don't think you're right. The writer must have been talking about people playing the role of Clown in pantomime, not the other clowns in pantomime, and certainly not other kinds of clowns, like circus clowns. I think it should be with the initial cap. All the best. -- Ssilvers (talk) 00:01, 8 December 2012 (UTC)
If he's only talking about the Clown character, it doesn't really seem worth mentioning, IMO. But if it is to be mentioned it should be reworded. If it's referring to the Clown character, it should probably say "the greatest Clown" or "the greatest performance of Clown", rather than "the greatest of all Clowns". Kaldari (talk) 00:15, 8 December 2012 (UTC)

[<--left] Hi, Kaldari. I'm American, but I have spent several years learning about the British pantomime and harlequinade, which were wildly popular entertainments in Britain in the 18th and 19th centuries, from the time of John Rich (producer) through the Victorian era. The British still have Christmas pantomimes, but these no longer have the magical transformation scene that always changed the pantomime into the chaotic harlequinade in the 18th and 19th centuries. Indeed, in many cases, the pantomime story was merely a way to introduce the characters that would then be transformed into the harlequinade characters for the balance of the evening. Every Harlequinade had the same five clown characters: Harlequin, the romantic lead; the scheming and crafty Clown; Harlequin's girlfriend Columbine; old Pantaloon; and Pierrot. All of the major harlequinade characters were different types of clowns; minor characters included a policeman. The pantomime/harlequinade entertainment was so popular that nearly every West End theatre, and most theatres throughout the country, played a panto/harlequinade from December to February every year, and often another one at Easter. Some of the biggest theatres specialized in playing them year round. People like W. S. Gilbert (of Gilbert and Sullivan) wrote of their childhood obsessions with "Clowns" - meaning the famous actors who portrayed the Clown character. Gilbert wrote about how, as a child, he used to "follow Clowns" in London, to see where the actors lived (or where they would go after leaving the theatre) and that his love of the character made him want to run away from home to join the theatre.

The harlequinade is a theatrical genre that is almost unknown here in the US, but the most famous Clown in London would have been far more popular in the 19th century than the most famous stand-up comic is today - far more famous than, say, Jerry Seinfeld, because there were limited opportunities for entertainment in the days before the invention of the phonograph, TV, radio, film and video games. After sundown, your flat had only lamplight; but if you went to the huge Drury Lane Theatre, you could see and hear the great Grimaldi. So I definitely think that his status as the greatest of the Clowns is worthwhile, and I also think that when Cassianto wrote "the greatest of all Clowns", he was phrasing it precisely to signify "the greatest Clown of all times". I asked Cassianto to get back to you to confirm that the quoted writers were referring to pantomime Clowns, as opposed to any other clown characters in the harlequinade or in any other entertainments. All the best! -- Ssilvers (talk) 01:35, 8 December 2012 (UTC)

Yes, but I'm afraid "the greatest of all Clowns" doesn't mean anything to anyone in the modern world, whereas "the greatest of all clowns" is meaningful to everyone. Thus I imagine that 99.9% of readers would misinterpret that sentence. Kaldari (talk) 08:15, 8 December 2012 (UTC)
I'm not entirely sure I am understanding this discussion. When I think of Clowns, I don't differentiate between those within the harlequinade and those in other forms of entertainment. Sure, he was the greatest Clown performer of his period, but he has also been considered to be so by many historians, performers and authors up to the present day. I have put some thoughts down from two of his biographers, who considred him to be the greatest Clown performer. With regards to the Bentley's Miscellany, I was phrasing it exactly to the word. I cannot elaborate any further, thus it's ambiguity may still present to you I'm afraid. Would it be better trying to find something else Kaldari? -- CassiantoTalk 21:14, 8 December 2012 (UTC)
My suggestion was to change 'Clowns' in that sentence to 'clowns' (or rephrase the sentence entirely). I recognize that this may not have been the exact meaning intended by Bentley's Miscellany, but I think it would be good to change it for 2 reasons:
  • A modern reader has no interest in who was the best performer of the Clown character in the harlequinade, but would be very interested in who was the best clown, period. I realize that at the time there may have been little distinction, but we are emphasizing the distinction by using the proper noun.
  • Most readers are going to assume that 'Clowns' in that sentence is supposed to be 'clowns' anyway.
Kaldari (talk) 22:15, 8 December 2012 (UTC)

I've changed the way it's phrased, so let me know if you're pleased with it now, Kaldari. I have also gone through the whole article to clarify that Clown with a big C refers only to the Clown character in the harlequinade. If a person wants to understand the distinction more precisely, they have to go to the harlequinade article. -- Ssilvers (talk) 22:21, 8 December 2012 (UTC)

I added some further comments at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Joseph Grimaldi/archive1. Kaldari (talk) 22:47, 8 December 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for your comments. They led to substantial clarifications in the article, and I think the legacy section will continue to improve even more. All the best! -- Ssilvers (talk) 14:57, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

Source usage analysis of Women in Chile

You might be interested in this page, which includes an analysis of the source usage in the article Women in Chile. I started doing this because of a discussion at the Education Noticeboard about whether students typically used sources correctly. I decided to take some example articles from the spring 2012 semester and look at every single source in them, and determine whether there were any errors in the way the sources were used -- either direct quotation without quote marks, or close paraphrasing, or inaccurate representation of the source material. You are one of the main editors of that article, so quite a few of the source attributions are to you. So far I've analyzed references 1, 2, 7 and 9, and your name has come up multiple times; I thought you might like to take a look at the analysis I've done so far and let me know if you think I've made any mistakes. (You'll have to scroll over the blank rows where I don't have access to the sources.) I'll leave you another note when I complete the analysis. Thanks for any feedback or corrections. -- Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 13:11, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi Mike, this is a very useful analysis. Thanks for your work on this! I have to say that I disagree with some of your assessments of close paraphrasing, however. Several of them are simple presentations of facts that should be covered by WP:LIMITED. A couple ones in particular:
Article text Original
Despite the fact that 47.5 percent of students in college are women, many still choose to be homemakers rather than join the workforce. Although 47.5% of university students are women, many university graduates choose to be homemakers instead of seeking employment.
Today, younger women are opting out of marriage and having fewer children than their predecessors. Younger women often choose cohabitation over marriage and they have fewer children.
Women in Chile have long life expectancy, living an average of 80.8 years, about six years longer than men. Women in Chile have a long life expectancy and high rates of literacy. Women live on average 80.8 years.

Let me know if you have suggestions for how to reword those, but they seem OK to me. Maybe I'm just not creative enough, though. :) Kaldari (talk) 20:18, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, I'll gladly take recommendations and of course encourage people to #sofixit for these things. Really embarrassing stuff to see about my writing on this subject. I do agree with Kaldari, a lot of it falls under WP:LIMITED. Crazy stuff. SarahStierch (talk) 21:09, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
I started to think as I went through this that (a) it wasn't fair to y'all to do this without letting you know, and (b) maybe my interpretation of LIMITED wasn't the same as others. I'll get some more eyes on those examples and try to understand consensus on that a bit better before I go on. I'm really mostly interested in the students' work, but I figured that the right way to do the analysis was to take a snapshot of the article and look at how the students' work compared with that of experienced editors -- you two, in other words. I'll post another note here with a link to wherever I ask for more opinions. Thanks for the detailed response and I appreciate you not getting too annoyed with me. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 22:37, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
No problem! Most of your analysis is quite accurate, it's just a bit strict on the paraphrasing, IMO. Some things are quite difficult to rephrase without changing the meaning or emphasis. I would even allow a sentence to repeat a source verbatim if it is clearly the most straightforward way to state a fact. If the wording of the sentence is unique or there are multiple sentences involved, I would be much more strict, however. Of course, that's just my interpretation of the guidelines and others may disagree. Cheers! Kaldari (talk) 22:48, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
OK, I posted a query here. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 23:45, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

Percentages

Hi - I saw the the table of percentages of blackout votes on Andreas' talk page. Can you clarify what the percentages are of? I can't get the numbers to make sense on simple inspection. E.g. You say that 443 is 39.1% of something, and on the same row that 479 is 39.6% of something. That doesn't add up. Also, what is an autoconfirmed account? There were many accounts that voted after a long period of 'sleeping'. Would they have been autoconfirmed? 86.171.239.229 (talk) 18:47, 26 December 2012 (UTC)

The percentage is the percentage of all the votes (that meet that threshold) across all the options. If you add up all the percentages vertically, you'll get 100%. Sleeper accounts would only be counted as autoconfirmed if they had at least 10 edits to Wikipedia. Kaldari (talk) 01:59, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
Now I understand. Actually the non-confirmed and IP votes were a significant percentage of the total. However, enough of them voted against the blackout to nullify the effect (as I read it). 86.171.239.43 (talk) 16:35, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

SOPA

Hi Kaldari, about our conversation the other day – I just came across this from here: "One possible view is that because the law would seriously impact the functioning of Wikipedia for everyone, a global strike of at least the English Wikipedia would put the maximum pressure on the US government." "Seriously impact the functioning of Wikipedia for everyone" sounded very ominous, and is completely at odds with what Tim said here would actually have been involved: "The compliance cost would be no worse than a typical WP:RSPAM report." This is just for your reference, because you asked me about statements like this, and I didn't remember this one at the time. Best, Andreas JN466 03:18, 11 January 2013 (UTC)

Another question about the SOPA protest

Kaldari, I have seen references to a 'war room' that operated at WMF headquarters during the January blackout day. Can you give me a sense of what people were doing there? I mean, didn't you just have to black out Wikipedia and sit back? What else was going on? Grateful for any details. 86.146.79.118 (talk) 11:25, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

Blacking out the site was the (mostly) trivial part. Setting up a system for millions of people (8 million to be specific) to look up their congressional representatives and contact them without melting our servers (or someone else's servers) took a bit of work. We were also continually updating the wording and content of the blackout page itself and all the related informational pages. And of course dealing with a tidal wave of media coverage. Kaldari (talk) 23:38, 12 January 2013 (UTC)
Thanks 86.169.242.194 (talk) 09:15, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
