Designation list colours

I'm not even sure what this edit summary means. We spent weeks discussions to the Designation List template so that the Canadian one could be red. Now the Canadian one conflicts with the provincial one. How do we fix this?--Skeezix1000 (talk) 23:18, 11 August 2012 (UTC)

Hello, in my ordinary check of Category:Proposed deletions needing attention I noticed you put a prod tag on the subject page. I had tagged it with {{db-user}}, but then undid myself when I realized that you are an admin and have the ability to delete it yourself. Beastiality and female genital mutilation as sexual assault?

Hi. Is it appropriate that these[1][2] be classified as sexual assault, in light of how reliable sources define sexual assault? I say no, except for the cases where female genital mutilation is carried out against a female's will. 109.123.115.21 (talk) 18:53, 24 August 2012 (UTC)

But thinking over female genital mutilation again, I can't see how it is sexual assault unless it is performed with sexual/psychological gratification in mind or is defined that way simply because it's the sex organs that are being mutilated. WikiCup 2012 August newsletter

The final is upon us! We are down to our final 8. A massive 573 was our lowest qualifying score; this is higher than the 150 points needed last year and the 430 needed in 2010. Even in 2009, when points were acquired for mainspace edit count in addition to audited content, 417 points secured a place. That leaves this year's WikiCup, by one measure at least, our most competitive ever. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:

  1. Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions) once again finishes the round in first place, leading Pool B. Grapple X writes articles about television, and especially The X-Files and Millenium, with good articles making up the bulk of the score.
  2. Wisconsin Miyagawa (submissions) led Pool A this round. Fourth-place finalist last year, Miyagawa writes on a variety of topics, and has reached the final primarily off the back of his massive number of did you knows.
  3. Minnesota Ruby2010 (submissions) was second in Pool B. Ruby2010 writes primarily on television and film, and scores primarily from good articles.
  4. Scotland Casliber (submissions) finished third in Pool B. Casliber is something of a WikiCup veteran, having finished sixth in 2011 and fourth in 2010. Casliber writes on the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. Over half of Casliber's points this round were bonus points from the high-importance articles he has worked on.
  5. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came second in Pool A. Also writing on biology, especially marine biology, Cwmhiraeth received 390 points for one featured article (Bivalvia) and one good article (pelican), topping up with a large number of did you knows.
  6. New York City Muboshgu (submissions) was third in Pool A. Muboshgu writes primarily on baseball, and this round saw Muboshgu's first featured article, Derek Jeter, promoted on its fourth attempt at FAC.
  7. Michigan Dana Boomer (submissions) was fourth in Pool A. She writes on a variety of topics, including horses, but this round also saw the high-importance lettuce reach featured article status.
  8. Canada Sasata (submissions) is another WikiCup veteran, having been a finalist in 2009 and 2010. He writes mostly on mycology.

However, we must also say goodbye to the eight who did not make the final, having fallen at the last hurdle: Russia GreatOrangePumpkin (submissions), England Ealdgyth (submissions), England Calvin999 (submissions), Poland Piotrus (submissions), North Carolina Toa Nidhiki05 (submissions), Florida 12george1 (submissions), Cherokee Nation The Bushranger (submissions) and North Macedonia 1111tomica (submissions). We hope to see you all next year.

U.S. historic site color templates

Hi Kaldari -- Could you please comment at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places#Standard colors. Your edit of August 11 changing a bunch of colors has been noticed, and it causes some problems, mainly that it obliterates distinctions that were intended. Was your change proposed and discussed somewhere? Can you please explain and/or participate in some discussion now. Hmm, i see above in another discussion section of August 12 that it may have caused problems for Canadian historic sites, too. This is about the U.S. historic sites. I changed the text parameter to a template call and it worked. However I'm still working on two more aspects:
  1. Being able to leave a custom message in addition to the template, either above or below it
  2. Calling a different template for each sub-type rather than 1 for each type. So there is a [Badges] type and then there might be up 100 subtype Badges. Can I call a different template for each sub-type?

WikiCup 2012 September newsletter

We're over half way through the final, and so it is less than a month until we know for certain our 2012 WikiCup champion. Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions) currently leads, followed by Canada Sasata (submissions), Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and Scotland Casliber (submissions). However, we have no one resembling a breakaway leader, and so the competition is a long way from over. Next month's newsletter will feature a list of our winners (who are not necessarily only the finalists) and keep your eyes open for an article on the WikiCup in a future edition of The Signpost. The leaders are already on a par with last year's winners, but a long way from the huge scores seen in 2010. That said, a repeat of the competition from 2010 seems unlikely.

It is good to see that three-quarters of our finalists have already scored bonus points this round. This shows that, contrary to criticism that the WikiCup has received in the past, the competition does not merely incentivise the writing of trivial articles; instead, our top competitors are still spending their time contributing to high-importance articles, and bringing them to a high standard. This does a great service to the encyclopedia and its readers. Thank you, and good work!

The planning for next year's WikiCup is ongoing. Some straw polls have been opened concerning the scoring, and you can now sign up for next year's competition. Notability and indiscriminate collection of information

Hi, this is regarding your recent edits at Gangnam Style and Gangnam phenomenon.

From what I understand from WP:GNG, an article could be considered as notable if there is a significant amount of reliable, 3rd party sources covering it. I think this could be the case for Gangnam phenomenon, because it seems that there have been journalists and authors from different publications and national newspapers around the world that have used the term, I think it could be considered notable, in my humble opinion.

Also, I believe a few sections found at Gangnam Style could be considered encyclopedic, especially the part about celebrity tweets. Several third party sources have claimed that celebrity tweets have been the main reason for the song's success, for example, The Wall Street Journal says that T-Pain tweet "sent [the video] to the stratosphere" and Der Spiegel wrote that the singer owe's his success to Katy Perry's tweet, etc

Taken as a whole, this could be a relevant section that may explain the song's success outside its home country. Also, as per WP:WORLDVIEW, I thought it could be a good idea to include opinions from sources outside the English speaking world, perhaps the list could be shortened a little to exclude some smaller countries, but I think it might be unfair to remove it completely. I think the song's reception in some significant countries such France, Germany, China, India, etc could be included, in my humble opinion.

Also, I have to admit that I've only been editing Wikipedia since 2 months ago, so please do let me know if you have suggestions on how to better integrate all the above information into the article (Other than just long strings of text) -A1candidate (talk) 19:42, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

Unclosing RFC? Highly disruptive!

This goes way beyond WP:BOLD. Just because you're an admin, doesn't give you a right to modify a duly closed RFC. I understand that you dispute that "duly", and that is your right - in a discussion on the talk page, not by de-facto imposing your will. Hello, I noticed that your oppose rationale contradicts the proposed rules for the BR. If you have the time, please take another look. Don't be intimidated, my interest is in genuinely trying to help you pointed in the right direction so you don't have to feel concerned anymore. I prefer being the good guy, and I just use the tools when I am forced to. I'm not quick on the trigger, friend. Stuff happens, the key is taking good advice and moving in the right direction. Editing can be a lot of fun, I've done it for years here. I often start editing, and end up following links to different stuff, wandering all around, find myself fixing spelling or minor things, and half the day has gone by without working on what I started out to work on, yet I got some stuff done that helped. Old military aircraft is one of those weaknesses that can get me reading for hours. Editing is supposed to be fun, otherwise I would have a different hobby. I was considering making an edit of Wedding Band page. Its a new TV show that aired last week and the page is currently underdeveloped (compared to something else like the Awake (TV show) page. What would you advise?
I was going to use the Awake page and other Tv pages as a guide on construct and tone. Is this a good approach? Or would you recommend that I try working on something else?

Working on Wedding Band sounds like a good idea. For style advice, take a look at Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Television and Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Writing about fiction. Regarding New York, it would only be a conflict of interest if you are promoting something you are personally associated with, such as a company or organization. I'd also recommend not adding any external links until you've read through Wikipedia:External links, as this is frequently looked upon as spamming unless the guidelines are carefully followed. Hi. I saw that you made this change. I don't think you're right. The writer must have been talking about people playing the role of Clown in pantomime, not the other clowns in pantomime, and certainly not other kinds of clowns, like circus clowns. I'm American, but I have spent several years learning about the British pantomime and harlequinade, which were wildly popular entertainments in Britain in the 18th and 19th centuries, from the time of John Rich (producer) through the Victorian era. The British still have Christmas pantomimes, but these no longer have the magical transformation scene that always changed the pantomime into the chaotic harlequinade in the 18th and 19th centuries. Indeed, in many cases, the pantomime story was merely a way to introduce the characters that would then be transformed into the harlequinade characters for the balance of the evening. Every Harlequinade had the same five clown characters: Harlequin, the romantic lead; the scheming and crafty Clown; Harlequin's girlfriend Columbine; old Pantaloon; and Pierrot. All of the major harlequinade characters were different types of clowns; minor characters included a policeman. The pantomime/harlequinade entertainment was so popular that nearly every West End theatre, and most theatres throughout the country, played a panto/harlequinade from December to February every year, and often another one at Easter. Some of the biggest theatres specialized in playing them year round. People like W. S. Gilbert (of Gilbert and Sullivan) wrote of their childhood obsessions with "Clowns" - meaning the famous actors who portrayed the Clown character. Gilbert wrote about how, as a child, he used to "follow Clowns" in London, to see where the actors lived (or where they would go after leaving the theatre) and that his love of the character made him want to run away from home to join the theatre.

The harlequinade is a theatrical genre that is almost unknown here in the US, but the most famous Clown in London would have been far more popular in the 19th century than the most famous stand-up comic is today - far more famous than, say, Jerry Seinfeld, because there were limited opportunities for entertainment in the days before the invention of the phonograph, TV, radio, film and video games. After sundown, your flat had only lamplight; but if you went to the huge Drury Lane Theatre, you could see and hear the great Grimaldi. So I definitely think that his status as the greatest of the Clowns is worthwhile, and I also think that when Cassianto wrote "the greatest of all Clowns", he was phrasing it precisely to signify "the greatest Clown of all times". I asked Cassianto to get back to you to confirm that the quoted writers were referring to pantomime Clowns, as opposed to any other clown characters in the harlequinade or in any other entertainments. I'm not entirely sure I am understanding this discussion. When I think of Clowns, I don't differentiate between those within the harlequinade and those in other forms of entertainment. Sure, he was the greatest Clown performer of his period, but he has also been considered to be so by many historians, performers and authors up to the present day. I have put some thoughts down from two of his biographers, who considred him to be the greatest Clown performer. With regards to the Bentley's Miscellany, I was phrasing it exactly to the word. My suggestion was to change 'Clowns' in that sentence to 'clowns' (or rephrase the sentence entirely). I recognize that this may not have been the exact meaning intended by Bentley's Miscellany, but I think it would be good to change it for 2 reasons:
  • A modern reader has no interest in who was the best performer of the Clown character in the harlequinade, but would be very interested in who was the best clown, period. I realize that at the time there may have been little distinction, but we are emphasizing the distinction by using the proper noun.
  • Most readers are going to assume that 'Clowns' in that sentence is supposed to be 'clowns' anyway.

Source usage analysis of Women in Chile

You might be interested in this page, which includes an analysis of the source usage in the article Women in Chile. I started doing this because of a discussion at the Education Noticeboard about whether students typically used sources correctly. I decided to take some example articles from the spring 2012 semester and look at every single source in them, and determine whether there were any errors in the way the sources were used -- either direct quotation without quote marks, or close paraphrasing, or inaccurate representation of the source material. You are one of the main editors of that article, so quite a few of the source attributions are to you. So far I've analyzed references 1, 2, 7 and 9, and your name has come up multiple times; I thought you might like to take a look at the analysis I've done so far and let me know if you think I've made any mistakes. No problem! Most of your analysis is quite accurate, it's just a bit strict on the paraphrasing, IMO. Some things are quite difficult to rephrase without changing the meaning or emphasis. I would even allow a sentence to repeat a source verbatim if it is clearly the most straightforward way to state a fact. If the wording of the sentence is unique or there are multiple sentences involved, I would be much more strict, however. Percentages

Hi - I saw the the table of percentages of blackout votes on Andreas' talk page. Can you clarify what the percentages are of? I can't get the numbers to make sense on simple inspection. E.g. You say that 443 is 39.1% of something, and on the same row that 479 is 39.6% of something. That doesn't add up. Also, what is an autoconfirmed account? The percentage is the percentage of all the votes (that meet that threshold) across all the options. If you add up all the percentages vertically, you'll get 100%. Have you ever encountered a bug where a reviewing of the page, in this instance University of Mohaghegh Ardabili, appeares reviewed to one person, but does not appear in the page curation log until someone else reviews it, in this case User:SarahStierch reviewed it a few hours later?--Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 20:58, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

"Seriously impact the functioning of Wikipedia for everyone" sounded very ominous, and is completely at odds with what Tim said here would actually have been involved: "The compliance cost would be no worse than a typical WP:RSPAM report." Another question about the SOPA protest

Kaldari, I have seen references to a 'war room' that operated at WMF headquarters during the January blackout day. Can you give me a sense of what people were doing there? Blacking out the site was the (mostly) trivial part. Setting up a system for millions of people (8 million to be specific) to look up their congressional representatives and contact them without melting our servers (or someone else's servers) took a bit of work. We were also continually updating the wording and content of the blackout page itself and all the related informational pages. And of course dealing with a tidal wave of media coverage.
