George W. Bush

Thanks for your appreciation. I'm not sure I'd consider the "BUSHISANIDIOT" type editors to be on my side, or indeed on anyone's side. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that, during the campaign, there were times when the same nitwit vandalized both the Bush and Kerry articles, just for the sport of it. The thing that does surprise me is that the level of vandalism has stayed as high as it has since the election. The supposed "warning" to you from an admin was, as you state, not how admins actually act, and this one was from some anon IP pretending to be an admin. That's why Hadal reverted it. (Comments on user talk pages aren't usually deleted but a gross impropriety like that is an exception.) Just ignore it. As for MONGO, we can't stop him from editing the page unless his conduct gets so bad as to support an arbitration proceeding against him. So far, I'd say he's nowhere near that point. We just have to keep editing the article to make sure that his censorship attempts don't succeed. If he gives up on trying to delete anything unflattering to Bush and concentrates instead on adding legitimate pro-Bush material, he might even help to improve the article. Bill Belichick

Hi! I noticed that in the April 4 edit to Bill Belichick you added the following text:

"Known for being one of the most reserved coaches in NFL history, especially to the press, his focus on the game of football have begun rumors that Belichick may have Asperger's Syndrome."

I've searched for confirmation of association between Belichick and Asperger's and could not find anything. Additionally, even if it exists, I don't think rumor should be included in articles unless the rumor itself is central to the topic.

I didn't want to remove it before checking with you first since I realize there may be more behind the inclusion than I'm aware of. What do you think? Tobycat 04:26, 17 May 2005 (UTC)

Association of Anarchist Wikipedians

I think what you misunderstand is that anarchism is not at all about chaos, but quite on the contrary, it is about spontaneous order. As I already said in the same text block, I would agree "elections" are fundamentally in conflict with the concept, since they reduce people's expressions to a vote (which can be easily controlled anyway) and result in a hierarchy of power. As for organizing though, you seem to be confusing anarchism with either one of its subsets, individualist anarchism, or with nihilism. In general though anarchists realize that only by organizing can you have any power, in the same way you won't see individual war or civil rights protestors walking about calling for change. As you can see, a number of groups work in this direction, and the only real complication I can see in relation to the tenets of anarchism is just the bureaucratic element, although I think when you don't have an internal hierarchy that is somewhat minimalized. Well, you shouldn't confuse it with anarcho-capitalism either, which is the more pronounced version of libertarianism. Anarchism isn't simply about eliminating the state, but also about reconstructing society in general so as to attain a more egalitarian power structure. This ideas range in extent from having a democratic self-managed society run by the working class, to one with no actual monetary economy or with no permanent settlements. Barn

An Entire Barn!

Thanks for the barn! As for barnstars, here's the deal: They are all listed at Wikipedia:Barnstars on Wikipedia, which also has an explaination. The short story is this: any user can award one to any other user for anything. Typically, they have "criteria" for awarding them listed on the barnstar page, but there isn't a barnstar police. We typically don't award barnstars for everyday things, but feel free to create your own award (like the barn) to reward people for things that aren't barnstar-worthy. (I use Indulgences). As I said on the page and on his RfA, I don't have a problem with his disability, unless it interferes with his ability to be an administrator. He claims that his Aspergers is responsible for the actions that are being cited as reasons he shouldn't be an admin, and that suggests to me that his disability is interfering with his ability to be an admin. No problem, you may find it easier to revert vandalism that manually chopping it out. All you need to do is go to page history, then select the version before the valdalism happened, open it by clicking on the date of the good revision, then hit edit. Just a suggestion: instead of creating what is essentially a one-person template, which means that it will eventually be nominated for deletion at Templates for deletion, you should go ahead and substitute it onto your user page (add "subst:" in the template like this: {{subst:User Ma EN}} so it doesn't need the template. If you want to see examples of more Babble-style boxes added to a User page without creating a template, take a look at the code for my user page. BlankVerse ∅ 05:29, 16 August 2005 (UTC)

The Babel templates are for denoting language skills so they do not even separate out the mutually-intelligible dialects such as British English and American English. Also, since the Babel project is primarily about the written language, there is no reason at all for the "official" Babel project to create additional templates for the innumerable accents that can be found around the world.

As for categories, there are categories under category:Wikipedians for the various US states (see Category:Wikipedians in Massachusetts for example), but there is no need for one for the Boston accent. If you create such a category, I have no doubt that it will get eventually deleted through the Categories for deletion process.

For now, you will have to be satisfied with your one-person template, and don't be surprised if it is eventually nominated for deletion at Templates for deletion. BlankVerse ∅ 22:56, 16 August 2005 (UTC)

Energy Policy Act questions

Hey there, I'm really sorry it's taken a bit to get back to you, other unpleasantries have distracted me from a few talk page issues. Anyway, to answer your question about Wikiquote, I haven't really dealt with it all that much myself. But in my limited experience, it really is what it seems -- a clearinghouse for quotes from certain people. For the most part, I think articles are created on people, and therein things they've said are deposited. But I've also seen pages of quotes from movies and television shows. Were I you, I would probably either create a page for the individual politicians whose quotes you want to include there, and put them there with an explanation of in what context the thing was said, OR, maybe create a page of quotes related to this bill. I'm not sure if there is any precedent there for doing such a thing, but like any wiki, you can start any article you like. Wicked. · Katefan0^(scribble) 16:04, August 18, 2005 (UTC)

Creating a Radio Station

Ah, right...just like a forum. Replies on bottom. Don't know why I thought top.

Anyway, I've been doing internet radio personally since 1997. I started with a Live365 account, and that served me OK for a while. Then they started implementing bad policies like requiring listeners to register to listen, and making them watch VIDEO ads before the stream started. Not good stuff.

It's not that it's really "hard" to do, but it does take money. You need some kind of playlist automation machine to run the playlist for your station if it's going to be a 24/7 station. If it's going to be on the Internet, then you would need to get stream server hosting from somewhere (either SHOUTcast or Icecast most likely). That can go from $0.80 (32kbps) to $5.00 (192kbps) per listener slot in mp3 format depending on quality if you get it slot by slot from a company (such as Mediacast1). There are also other internet radio broadcast codecs such as Ogg Vorbis that allows for high quality sounding audio at lower bitrates, therefore saving you money. There's even some new codecs like aac+ that can deliver CD quality in 32kbps or something, but those are not free/open source and cost a minimum of $100 to get going.

Then there is a whole other aspect called licensing. Depending on where you live, you have to pay for the music you play. In the USA, you'd have to go through the various organizations such as ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, and SoundExchange. There are some smaller companies that pay those agencies on your behalf, which tends to be cheaper. They take advantage of a "joint" or "blanket" license and you pay them accordingly. Services like this are SWCast or LoudCity. I'd go for LoudCity if you are a new broadcaster, SWCast has let me down in the past.

As for FM or LPFM, if you are in the US it will be a lot harder to legally do that than an internet broadcast. You have to get a license from the FCC to do that, and I am still looking in to all that myself, although I do have a small FM transmitter here (just a couple of Ramsey kits).
