Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for the calculation of the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. RonBot (talk) 18:12, 18 January 2019 (UTC)

Thank you for adjusting this image?

Having reviewed this advice, the image will be better if it remained as is to see the heraldry detail of the certificate. So I will add the template {{non-free no reduce}} to the image page.

Kaybeesquared (talk) 12:53, 25 January 2019 (UTC)

Why use the image?

Its inclusion in the article adds significantly to the article because the photo and its historical significance are the object of discussion in the article. Kaybeesquared (talk) 23:03, 19 January 2019 (UTC)

Kaybeesquared (talk) 16:58, 10 March 2019 (UTC) Having some difficulties with a University official blogpost which declares CC by SA 3.0 and includes images of Prof. Alison J. Tierney; tried re-uploading the picture, with more detail, tried adding 'official licence' text, and now added authorised 'permission' in my capacity as a Director of the University.

This may not work. I am not be doing any of this properly, I feel at next wiki-thon will need training but also probably the University will have to consider how best to allow others to share materials onto Wiki Commons that are desired to be shared under such open licenses; give simple instructions for staff - or others to share onto Wiki (or just me?).

Advice welcome

Your contributed article, Dr Elizabeth 'Elma' Innes

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Hello, I noticed that you recently created a new page, Dr Elizabeth 'Elma' Innes. First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as you. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page – Elizabeth Innes. Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will continue helping to improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at Elizabeth Innes. If you have new information to add, you might want to discuss it at the article's talk page.

If you think the article you created should remain separate, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Deletion discussion about George Drever

Hello, Kaybeesquared,

Welcome to Wikipedia! I edit here too, under the username Onel5969 and it's nice to meet you :-)

I wanted to let you know that I've started a discussion about whether an article that you created, George Drever should be deleted. Your comments are welcome at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/George Drever .

You might like to note that such discussions usually run for seven days and are not ballot-polls. And, our guide about effectively contributing to such discussions is worth a read. Last but not least, you are highly encouraged to continue improving the article; just be sure not to remove the tag about the deletion nomination from the top.

If you have any questions, please leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|Onel5969}}. And, don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~ . Thanks!

{{Re|Onel5969}}

Hello and thank you for your advice, I am still learning!

Can the article page just be removed from these categories rather than deleted altogether? If it is seen as too incomplete can it be moved 'back' into a DRAFT ARTICLE status instead.

The notability of Scottish working class volunteers in the Spanish Civil War such as George Drever is referenced elsewhere and others can find more supporting materials, or I can when back in action (but not this coming 7 days however, due to other commitments).

Help and advice is much appreciated.

Other editors who have advised me can help steer?

Hi. First, you're doing very good work on the project, so please keep it up. Second, I formatted your comments on the AfD, take a look to see how comments at AfD should be. Third, {{Re|Onel5969}} I assume that you are attempting to "ping" me. That's incorrect formatting. Again, at the AfD I formatted it correctly so that you could see how to do it. Fourth, don't let this AfD discourage you. I'll discuss the AfD at that talk page.Onel5969 TT me 15:35, 11 August 2019 (UTC)

See updated version of the page Kaybeesquared (talk) 14:47, 11 August 2019 (UTC)

Kaybeesquared (talk) 18:18, 11 August 2019 (UTC) Found some more sources on George Drever, also reference that he was 'too important to lose' and Special Branch confirming the impact of his actions/beliefs on his future career in military and civil life. This adds to the 'notability' case. Added material to the subject page for Blacklisting.

Kitty Marshall

The Original Barnstar
Being semi-retired from Wikipedia, I had a wonderful surprise to see that the beautiful Kitty Marshall now has an article. I was always planning to get around to it, but never did. So please accept this barnstar as a sign of my appreciation for producing the article and not just making a stub. PS. Thanks for the updates to Rachell Barrett too, some great additional work. The Kenneys

Hi Kaybeesquared, I just finished a short article on Nell Kenney. I noticed that on many of the articles on the various Kenney sisters it is stated that there were 12 siblings. I cannot find a reference to that specific number. Do you have a reference to that fact? Thanks. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 15:22, 3 September 2019 (UTC)

@WomanArtistUpdates:

Hi WomanArtistUpdates

The trusty Diane Atkinson ISBN 9781408844045 references that there were 11 children; so I have added citation and info about her mother's death to Nell Kenney and will edit key points into the others. Atkinson refers in her citations to the Annie Kenney 'Memories of a Militant" p9 as source for comment about their father's nursing care. Hope that is helpful

Kaybeesquared (talk) 19:14, 7 September 2019 (UTC)

Thanks Kaybeesquared! I saw the Atkinson reference to eleven children, but I was reluctant to starting changing all those pages in case there were actually twelve. (Did you notice that Nellie didn't even make the index of Atkinson's massive book?) Best, WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 00:35, 8 September 2019 (UTC)

Yes I noticed nothing about Nellie in Atkinson - and lo and behold, Sorry after being so sure, I have looked again at the list of Kenney Papers and it states at the start 12 siblings but does not name them all - we could write to UoEA or Atkinson to confirm this I guess. Would you like to do that or should I follow up in due course https://portal.uea.ac.uk/documents/6207125/6460911/Kenney%252BPapers.pdf/90e1a9d5-fde9-4b49-a995-87d24addf96f

Will add note to talk page of each Kenney in wikipedia meantime Kaybeesquared (talk)

I leave it to your expertise to confirm the number of siblings. Kaybeesquared. Thanks!WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 00:37, 9 September 2019 (UTC)
@WomanArtistUpdates:

University of East Anglia archivist has answered - and referred to Source: The Kenney Family of Springhead by Geoffrey Woodhead.

The confusion may be with Clara the youngest dying as a baby. I will edit into appropriate wiki-pages over the next few days!

The Kenneys are:

1. Reginald 1873-1954

2. Mary 1874-1954

3. Sarah Ellen 1876- 1953

4. Alice Emily 1878-1927

5. Annie 1879-1953

6. Caroline 1880-1952

7. Rowland 1882-1961

8. Jane 1884-1961

9. Jessie 1887-1985

10. Herbert 1889-1973

11. Harold Hinchcliffe 1890-19--? (may have died in his teens)

12. Clara 1891-1891 (5 months)

Kaybeesquared (talk) 08:46, 11 September 2019 (UTC)

Kaybeesquared maybe phrase it as "...twelve children, eleven surviving past infancy..." and then cite Atkinson and Woodhead. What do you think?WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 00:55, 12 September 2019 (UTC)

Kaybeesquared, Successful ping :)! It is an amazing family. I made a Kenney Family template for the bottom of their pages. I only included the sisters with pages. It includes all the iterations of their names plus birth and death year. I transferred the full list of twelve children to the template's talk page. Jenny Kenney

Started article for Jenny (Jane) Kenney, but should probably have called in Jane (Jenny)? Not much reference material but could add more about the rest care for Cat and Mouse act? picture of the house Tower Cressy in a blog so probably not open source. And needs more citation on the Montessori teaching methods, perhaps?

Kaybeesquared (talk) 22:10, 7 September 2019 (UTC)

Activity: tidied up pages with Kenney family re siblings and links to Eagle House template, and also put list of siblings provided by University of East Anglia and Woodhead reference into the relevant talk pages.

Hunger Strike Medal and Holloway Brooch

Hi Kaybeesquared! It looks like you and Jack1956 are working on Hunger Strike Medal and Holloway Brooch histories. I have looked around for a list of recipients of the Holloway Brooch as well as how many were made by Toye & Co. If either of you could direct me to that information I would appreciate it. It has been suggested to me that the information might be available on UK ProQuest, maybe even the subject of a dissertation. I do not have access, but if you do and can help I would appreciate it. I am just taking a chance by leaving you this note and pinging Jack1956. Best, WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 00:59, 5 October 2019 (UTC)

I'm off to the Pankhurst Centre tomorrow so I will see if anyone knows there. The other person is Elizabeth Crawford who has an OBE for knowing about this stuff. She is on Twitter and has a good web site. She has been very helpful to Women in Red. Victuallers (talk) 20:44, 8 October 2019 (UTC)
Thanks Victuallers! WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 20:48, 8 October 2019 (UTC)

I asked about this at the centre. They had a list of suffragettes but I think this is the one created years later which is well known. They had no idea about a list of hunger strikers or forcefed women. However! I fid discover this which is supplenental to the story about "Evaline Hilda Burkitt, first suffragette to be force fed, created by artist Helen Marshall". I have created a wikidata record for her. She appears to be the first! and we had no article. Roger aka Victuallers (talk) 22:16, 10 October 2019 (UTC) (I did get to re-meet Helen Pankhurst on the day that the WSPU formed (today!) on the spot that it was formed by her g.grandmother!)

Kaybeesquared (talk) 13:50, 11 October 2019 (UTC)

Hi WomenArtistUpdates (talk found another Holloway brooch recipient in Australia, WSPU Louie Cullen. Lovely image of her 'brooch' in the National Library of Australia archive, perhaps ask to use? Thanks for the 'fair use' one in Commons meantime.

Kaybeesquared (talk) 23:13, 3 November 2019 (UTC)

Hi Kaybeesquared - actually "fair use" means we will only use the image on the Holloway Brooch page. Any other uses of this image, on Wikipedia or elsewhere, might be copyright infringement. I will remove the image from Cullen's page and figure out if we can use the other one tomorrow. Best, WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 02:05, 4 November 2019 (UTC)
well, kick me in the head and call me stupid, but I can't get to the photo of Holloway Prison brooch belonging to Louie (Louisa) Cullen (Item 2004/3/309) how did you see it? advice please. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 16:45, 4 November 2019 (UTC)

Spacing

Hi. Just here to give a bit of advice, no criticism intended. Firstly thank you for your edits. I'm not certain if it has been you but at least on one page you have been heavily editing there have been a lot of cases of using br in the main text. Br is used to force line breaks and is not generally used or intended for the main text but for the infobox and in certain list and table cases. Generally for the main text each paragraph should just use a single line break between each paragraph for consistency and uniformity. These pages may be helpful: Help:Line-break handling and Wikipedia:Line breaks usage. Thank you for your time and happy editing. Apologies if this was not you. Helper201 (talk) 01:55, 4 November 2019 (UTC)

Also, on an unrelated note, based off of your recent edits, you make like to join Wikipedia:WikiProject Feminism and/or Wikipedia:WikiProject Women's History, as I notice you have been editing multiple pages related to these topics. Helper201 (talk) 02:00, 4 November 2019 (UTC)
@Helper201: thank you for these invitations, I have looked at these Wiki projects and may join the Women's History but I am really focussing on the suffragettes for quite a while yet, with odd foray to other areas, for a wee change but happy to look in them now and again if I need help.

Victuallers and Stinglehammer have been my patient guides, encouragers and teachers. Kaybeesquared (talk) 22:45, 4 November 2019 (UTC)

Louie Cullen

Hi Kaybeesquared! I just reviewed the article you created on Louie (Louisa) Cullen. I think it looks great! I did some minor cleanup/formatting.

I did note that the "Other details" section might read better as prose. And are any of the noted artifacts available as photos on the Wikimedia Commons? It would be great to have a gallery, if possible.

Keep up the great work, and feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need help with anything! = paul2520 (talk) 13:20, 4 November 2019 (UTC)

editorial advice

Thank you paul2520 and Helper201 for these tips, I have edited list into prose. I use the VisualEditor and like more space to make things easy to read, but will try to remember this advice in future edits. Thanks Kaybeesquared (talk) 22:06, 4 November 2019 (UTC)

The article looks great, Kaybeesquared! It definitely meets the requirements to be nominated as a Did you know... article and get time on the front page. Are you interested in nominating it yourself? I'd be happy to help -- or nominate it for you, since I'm guessing it would be your first "DYK". Let me know; more folks should know about Cullen! = paul2520 (talk) 22:21, 4 November 2019 (UTC)

WOW thanks! @Paul2520: I would prefer someone else to nominate it so thanks if you are willing. I found her a fascinating person and so unknown apart from NLA blog which was superb.@Victuallers: and @Stinglehammer: have been my patient teachers and encouragers and have done so much for Women In Red. Kaybeesquared (talk) 22:33, 4 November 2019 (UTC)

@Kaybeesquared: I submitted the nomination here. I'll keep an eye on it, but I'd encourage you to check on it, in case there are suggestions.
My one question: is Cullen one of the women in the photo of the Women's March? If we have a reliable source that says so, it would be great to include the photo in the DYK nomination. If not, it's okay. = paul2520 (talk) 03:40, 5 November 2019 (UTC)

Ellen Crocker

Hi Kaybeesquared - I moved Ellen Crocker, 'cos I don't think we do aliases in the article title. Better way to handle it is to put redirects together for the other names - Nellie Crocker, Nelly Crocker - which I've done. --Tagishsimon (talk) 20:54, 16 November 2019 (UTC)

Women in Red

Hi there, Kaybeesquared. I see you have been creating lots of detailed biographies on suffragists. While you say they are in connection with Women in Red, you have not yet registered as a member. You can do so at the top of the Women in Red page. Please let me know if you experience any difficulties.--Ipigott (talk) 08:01, 6 December 2019 (UTC)

thanks

Thanks Ipiggott I thought I had joined during an earlier WiR meet up wiki-edit event with help from Victuallers so thank you for alerting me. I began and continue under the auspices of the wiki-edit events at the University of Edinburgh kindly supported by Stinglehammer but as you see have become bolder - but hopefully not rash! Tried to load an image of the WiR badge 2019 for my profile but no luck. Best wishes to this important project and everyone involved in recognising notable women across the globe. Kaybeesquared (talk) 13:02, 6 December 2019 (UTC)

suffragettes continued

As well as working through a list of Women in Red suffragettes identified as holders of the Hunger Strike Medal and others connected to them, and added a super image of Irish suffragette Lillian Metge, thanks to the National Library of Ireland, I have returned to the monthly sessions of Women In Red at the University of Edinburgh Library and as always so well supported by Stinglehammer discovered that we were working on the very site of the first female undergraduate accommodation (Masson Hall) named for the husband of Emily Rosaline Orme, suffragist, David Masson supporter of women's university education - just as we were updating her article with information about their joint activities. DYK for Louie Cullen

On 19 December 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Louie Cullen, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Louie Cullen, known as "the last of the suffragettes", started a prison hunger strike after her arrest for a 1908 attempt to rush into the House of Commons to promote women's right to vote in the UK? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Louie (Louisa) Cullen. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Louie Cullen), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Please be careful when considering changing Featured Articles such as Jane Cobden. I have repaired the damage, but you should read WP:LEAD and see why what you thought was "duplication" to be "corrected" was in fact the requisite summary in the lead section of the article.

As a general rule of thumb it is wise to discuss on the article talk page before making any major change to a Featured Article. Tim riley talk 22:39, 4 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Muriel Matters, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page National Union of Mineworkers (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Thanks for the message and the Barnstar! It is always nice to get a bit of recognition from one's peers. As for the image, I took it myself so I don't suppose there's much they can do about it. Page protection

Howdy hello! Thanks for asking for page protection for Alice Paul at WP:RFPP. I have declined your request, and just wanted to explain why :) Semi page protection is meant for pages experiencing high or persistent levels of vandalism, which Alice Paul just wasn't. All pages experience some vandalism, from the smallest to the largest. Its a side effect of the wiki-process. But we don't want to shut out valuable new editors. A large portion of constructive edits are still made by IP's and new users, so we try to use page protection as sparingly as possible. Generally, if a page has had much recent disruption (at least 3 vandalisms not all by the same user is a good rule of thumb, though not enshrined in policy) within the last day, or persistent disruption over a course of a week. Sometimes protection for disruption over a longer scale is warranted, but it needs to really be persistent and troublesome. Hopefully that helps explain our protection process a little better! Don't be afraid to submit pages for protection though if you think they need it, better safe than sorry, and an admin can always make the judgement call. Smooth sailing, CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 17:56, 19 May 2020 (UTC)

Maud Arncliffe Sennett

Hello Kaybeesquared, I hope you're doing well. I translated Maud Arncliffe Sennett into French and you improved a lot the English article (thank you). The reference to her career (especially Shakespeare Memorial at Stratford-upon-Avon, her husband's career, and others. doesn't fit with the reference [2]. The ODNB mention "G. Pownall, oils, 1913, Swan Theatre Gallery, Stratford upon Avon, Warwickshire". Best regards, --Pierrette13 (talk) 04:50, 2 July 2020 (UTC)

Hello and thanks @Pierrette13 thanks so much for correcting Maud Arncliffe Sennett reference used, so I have revisited the reference and amended the text, the point it was used for was that these early career reviews highlighted her strong delivery of the spoken word, which assisted her promotion of the suffragette cause. I hope this is now clearer and appropriately cited. Best regards - Kaybeesquared (talk) 10:48, 4 July 2020 (UTC)

Autopatrolled user rights

Hi again I hope all is well. As you may remember I’m a new page patroller and I‘ve seen good articles created by you coming through the New Pages Feed. At the moment when you create an article it goes into the queue to be reviewed and doesn’t get indexed by search engines until a reviewer has checked it. If you become autopatrolled you don’t have to wait to be reviewed. To request this user right please see here. If you’d prefer to keep getting reviewer feedback that’s fine, but you’re eligible to be considered for autopatrolled if you want to go for it. All the best Mccapra (talk) 04:14, 20 July 2020 (UTC)

@Mccapra Thank you so much for this suggestion, I appreciate it and have 'gone for it'. I have found comments helpful but feel I should be brave but not reckless now. So here's hoping autopatrolled is approved. Still need to learn more about wiki mark-up but here goes! Best wishes Kaybeesquared (talk) 14:08, 21 July 2020 (UTC)

Autopatrolled granted

Hi Kaybeesquared, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the "autopatrolled" permission to your account, as you have created numerous, valid articles. This feature will have no effect on your editing, and is simply intended to reduce the workload on new page patrollers. For more information on the autopatrolled right, see Wikipedia:Autopatrolled. However, you should consider adding relevant wikiproject talk-page templates, stub-tags and categories to new articles that you create if you aren't already in the habit of doing so, since your articles will no longer be systematically checked by other editors (User:Evad37/rater and User:SD0001/StubSorter.js are useful scripts which can help). Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! Beeblebrox (talk) 18:42, 21 July 2020 (UTC)

Citation style

Hello, again! Let me attempt to play the wise old codger: when adding material to an existing article you must take care to follow the existing formatting style. Your addition chez Lansbury put the book title in the References list when it ought to be in the Sources section. I keep an eye on this article and others by our much missed colleague (and my friend IRL) Brian Boulton, and I see I have missed at least one other such violation of WP:CITEVAR. I shall put it on my list to clean up. Meanwhile, a bit of advice about changing Featured Articles: it is advisable to propose changes, other than minor ones, on the article talk page. The texts of FAs have been approved by reviews by experienced editors, and alterations or additions should be made with caution. Best wishes, Tim riley talk 17:02, 21 January 2021 (UTC)

Tim riley all very welcome advice, and I apologise in my enthusiasm. Noted in the past that there is an alert on 'Featured Articles' so tend to steer clear - but not popped up as I went along - today. Sorry for causing you extra work.. your beginner and appreciative friend. Kaybeesquared (talk) 18:14, 21 January 2021 (UTC)

She to surname

May I ask why you keep changing instances of "she" to the surname? In a paragraph, the first reference should usually be to the surname, but subsequent references should be to "she". "Smith did this. Smith did that. Smith did this," is weird English. -- Necrothesp (talk) 11:55, 25 January 2021 (UTC)

Necrothesp There are three driving forces for changes like that to both remove ambiguity and non-NPOV gendered content.

1) where there is use of given name ...to remove any use of first name except in full or in early years e.g. Jane did... which would not happen on notable male biography pages (IMHO) Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Biography#Subsequent_use

2) to remove use of gendered pronoun (see essay guides re writing about women, for men editors or authors tend to use surname more often) Wikipedia:Gender-neutral_language

3) to ensure each statement can stand alone for future editing in new material so the citations are not inadvertently covering a different statement(avoids 'who is she?' where there are different women being referred to in the article not key person.)

As still a relative newcomer, I am happy to be corrected. Thanks. Kaybeesquared (talk) 14:18, 25 January 2021 (UTC)

Indeed, first names should not be used. But the surname does not need to be used every time. "She" is perfectly good English when referring to someone who was or is a woman, unless they are on record as objecting to gender-specific pronouns (highly unlikely before present times and pretty rare even today). This is not what WP:GENDER means. It simply means we should not use male or female pronouns when referring to someone who could be either male or female, not that we shouldn't use gender-specific pronounds when referring to a specific person. See WP:GENDER#Precision and clarity. As to (3), we try to write in clear standard English. If it is obvious who "she" refers to, then we use it. -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:31, 27 January 2021 (UTC)

suffragettes and criminal biography category

Just noted today that Jessie Kenney was categorised in WikiProject Criminal Biography https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Jessie_Kenney&diff=next&oldid=1006334363

Looking at this category there is not a section for political prisoners treated as criminals or UK suffragettes specifically?

But if Jessie Kenney is categorised that way, should her family and the rest of the Eagle House (suffragette's rest) suffragettes or the Holloway brooch and Hunger Strike Medal recipients be in this category too?

For consistency and connecting with the treatment of women's suffrage prisoners??

I am happy to help categorising articles for the women imprisoned if it is needed.

Pinging

Hello! My ping was entirely inadvertent, caused by my technical incompetence when archiving my talk page. Nevertheless, at your service if I can be of any assistance with anything. Best wishes, Tim riley talk 20:08, 8 May 2021 (UTC)

Tim riley Thanks Tim - nice to hear an expert like yourself also gets wiki a wee bit wrong sometimes, as I do - very often.. (joke!)

Cannot think of any special requests unless you have access to sources/knowledge of the musical career of contralto Jessie M. Soga or her tutors Alberto Giovannini at the Milan Conservatory or Jacques Bonby whilst in Paris. Kaybeesquared (talk) 20:22, 8 May 2021 (UTC)

My prose may or may not be expert, but I am fumble-fingered with the technical side of Wikipedia, and kind colleagues often rescue me. As to Soga I have no Italian sources, but I'll see if I can find anything from Paris about her and/or Bonby. More anon. Tim riley talk 20:28, 8 May 2021 (UTC)
Thanks muchly. Kaybeesquared (talk) 20:33, 8 May 2021 (UTC)
I don't know that you're going to thank me all that muchly for this, because I don't think Soga studied with Jacques Bonby. The source cited for ref 23 in the article doesn't support the statement that she studied with him and indeed makes no mention of her anywhere. The book (p. 540) mentions Bonby as someone else's teacher, but I think it is a misprint for the well-known Parisian voice teacher Jacques Bouhy. I can find no mention of Bonby anywhere in the French press archives, but Bouhy, after a successful operatic career, became a well-known voice teacher, with an impressive list of pupils including at least one Briton, Clara Butt. He, in my opinion, is probably the Parisian teacher with whom Soga studied, but unfortunately I can find no actual evidence that she did so. On the whole, failing a reliable source for the sentence I'd be inclined to remove it, which won't materially affect the article. – Tim riley talk 10:08, 9 May 2021 (UTC)
Tim riley How could I not thank you muchly - for such a rapid fulsome and helpful reply! We IanTheArchivist and I have been wondering why nothing findable on this tutor, so your investigation is great and so fast. She was a musician but also a (first tbc?) woman of colour suffragist in Scotland.

Thanks again for researching this question so very fast. Kaybeesquared (talk) 16:35, 9 May 2021 (UTC)

Tim riley Hello - you may recall that tou kindly offered to help...here is another wee beginners query - if you would be so kind.

Discussed with IanTheArchivist

How to properly reference a concert programme as a source? See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jessie_M._Soga#cite_note-28

It was created on a 'journal' cite template but is there something better or a model for concert programmes? I tried searching help and style guides, looked at some singer's articles - if used they linked 'image of programme'?

Is there a standard approach you would recommend as best practice?

Sorry to bother you with something that must be guidance for out there in the wikiworld already.

Thanks again if you are able to assist in this query. Kindest regards and apologies for pinging if you are not. Kaybeesquared (talk) 20:50, 1 August 2021 (UTC)

Glad to be of use, and pray never hesitate to ping if so inclined. It seems to me that a theatre or concert programme is as much a published source as a book or newspaper. If you have access to the published programme, then citing the concert details, date, location and publisher will, I think, meet the requirements of WP:V. If you have seen the programme it is ipso facto available somewhere: see WP:SOURCEACCESS. But I take issue with the statement that the composer of Soga's solo was Herbert Howells – he was aged nine in May 1902. And to be frank, I don't think the fact that Soga sang the solo, whoever wrote it, at a church social evening is even faintly noteworthy. Sorry to be a wet blanket. – Tim riley talk 21:35, 1 August 2021 (UTC)

Thanks Tim, for your time & help...learning every day. Kaybeesquared (talk) 08:15, 2 August 2021 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

I've been watching your contributions to the Charlotte Despard wiki and I'm very impressed. Loving the great work :) BulgeUwU (talk) 12:27, 20 May 2021 (UTC)
BulgeUwU thank you so much, appreciate this! - the new research is coming from findings in collaboration with IanTheArchivist on Women in Red - he deserves recognition for finding sources and is a new(er) user.

I will post a barnstar to him too.. Kaybeesquared (talk)

KaybeesquaredOh that's cool, in that case he deserves one to. I made a few pages myself for British feminists such as Dorothy Kuya and Jessie Eden but finding reliable information on their lives has been extremely difficult, so I've been watching a few other users including yourself to learn how to become a better editor :) BulgeUwU (talk) 13:19, 20 May 2021 (UTC)
BulgeUwU great articles - you may be interested in two Scottish women with some similarity Marjory Newbold and Mary Barbour. Thanks for your kind words... why not join Women in Red to help add more women! Monthly (virtual) meet ups are on offer to learn in a helpful community Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red.

Alumni or alumnae ??

Hello Kaybeesquared, could you help me ? According to me, the category [[Category:Brearley School alumni]] should be renamed into [[Category:Brearley School alumnae]] because it's an all-girls school. But I didn't succeed. Could you rename this category ? Best regards, --Pierrette13 (talk) 13:23, 12 July 2021 (UTC)

Pierrette13 thanks for getting in touch on this. However I think the only way that I know to rename a category (or article) is to Move it i.e. to the new name. However the category area no doubt has its own special rules, and it may be that main category is 'NY school alumni' to cover male and female (a guess - I don't know for sure) anyway there is guidance on renaming a category saying we must first allow discussions. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion#Speedy_renaming_and_merging Kaybeesquared (talk) 18:11, 12 July 2021 (UTC)

Hello Kaybeesquared, thank you for your answer. I did so, and discovered that Category:Brearley School alumnae already existed, hmmmm ! --Pierrette13 (talk) 04:41, 13 July 2021 (UTC)

Thank you for adding links to Jan Böhmermann. Only, some of them are considered WP:OVERLINK. Example: Poland - we don't link to current countries and their capitals. Example: mascot - we don't link to everyday words. Please read the guideline, and then remove some. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:08, 17 July 2021 (UTC)
