fuel dump/ ammo dump/ whatever

repeats info already in the 42 scare article and the freo sub base article - in milhist terms not a good idea to have repetition of material already in other articles where a link or two is better - :)

also a small problem the dump focuses on february while the emergency/scare focuses on march - there is more than what a check of materials and sources - I can remember the delays between official words and official actions melbourne and perth in the internal materials that I have accessed to date

So in a careful reading - ammo dump article needs to be carefully read against Fremantle_submarine_base and Western_Australian_emergency_of_March_1942 and any other related articles - I am off computer now for quite a while so cannot do it in short term - but in reality some of the text is repeating what is already on wikipedia in one form or other... - one good thing, for my work in the awm and online, I dont think I found anything that says that any of them did a boom, so it goes JarrahTree 09:24, 4 April 2017 (UTC)

We are discussing a very new user, who is trying hard in the face of an enormous learning curve, and with 3 new articles, clearly the kind of person who we'd like to "grow" over the long term. Probably they don't have your encyclopedic knowledge of WA articles (and nor do I). Could you invite them along to the Perth meetup? I was going to draw their attention to it, but I think it makes more sense if you do (assuming you are going along yourself -- if not, could you get someone who is going to invite them). Kerry, Hi. Just for your info, I am a total technophobe - just finding this page took ages! I have read and reread the rules and how to do things but it makes very little sense to me. Issues: 1 I have up to date photos - but cannot paste them in to replace the ones eg with scaffolding and taken over the fence 2. I cannot understand how to do references - it is all double Dutch sorry 3 as notified to you in part, once the Qld State Heritage awards are over ( late May) I hope to be able to get some help from the National Trust historian and Qld Heritage Council. 4. we have an Open day 13/5/2017 for the National Trust and Ipswich Council. The brochure prepared by the Trust and Council gives a small amount of background info re the 3 properties opening, but the Booval House notes specifically refer people to Wikipaedia. We are expecting a minimum of 1000 people through - had 1500 at our Open Day back in 2002! In past Open Days, I have printed out a tour guide and copies pf the 1868 and 1874 Auction notices which help to put the property in perspective, 1968/74 auction notices, rather than just the House. ( It was originally a 310 acre farm etc. and the house was referred to in the 1860 mortgage plans as the Homestead). I am wondering if you would be prepared to allow the combined Auction notice to be inserted in the Wikipaedia article until after the Open Day please? @JennyOz: I actually wasn't thinking about Sounds of Then when I made that edit summary (I was actually thinking of my obsession with List of sugar mills in Queensland). But as it happens, that song is an earworm for me too (so that's your fault!). Although I don't have a lot of canefields around me in suburban Brisbane, the lines "Out on the patio we'd sit and the humidity we'd breathe" do describe life during the Brisbane summer pretty well. @Lourdes: I'm on a low slow mission to seek out and replace any of the non-persistent Trove URLs (they occur in about 6000 articles and I have done about a quarter) so your cricketers should all be fixed sooner or later. It's not a simple substitution in all cases so I will use a series of AWB scripts to deal first with the easy cases and then deal progressively with the more complex cases. These non-persistent Trove URLs enter Wikipedia because people createtheir own citations manually or using forms using the URL they are copying from the address bar of their browser. It is not necessary to do this as everything in Trove comes with a Wikipedia citation ready to copy-and-paste (those citations use the persistent URL). For newspaper articles, look under the "i" symbol on the left-hand tool bar in Trove and then scroll down to the bottom of the various citation formats to find the Wikipedia one. So please educate any Trove users you know to use the pre-formatted citations (makes citing a breeze for them and avoids long-term linkrot for Wikipedia). Note these copy-and-paste citations work fine in both the source editor (use the book-with-red-bookmark icon and then paste) and the visual editor (use Cite > Manual > Basic and then paste). I probably should add that there is no immediate threat of the non-persistent URL format becoming linkrot but I try to clean them up from time to time to avoid the problem long-term. No change that I have heard of. They did a small rejig of the Wikipedia citations in 2015 and continued to use the same persistent IDs as before. But my information isn't just from the link I provided, I was told this by Trove staff and told that that was part of the motivation for directly incorporating citations in various formats and they use these same IDs in their "share with" tools for use with social media like Facebook and Twitter etc. But if you want to know more about the persistent URLs, why not ask them. I don't think I understand what you are asking, but I didn't set up the category so maybe I cannot answer you in any case. I used the category as a "default case" for my tool for writing the Queensland Heritage Register article for when it could not deduce a more appropriate category, e.g. "Schools in Queensland". But my intention was always to manually categorise anything ending up in it (which I am in the process of doing). Kerry (talk) 04:29, 9 May 2017 (UTC)

NP thanks for answering - nah some other states are much weaker in the heritage items compared to QLD , and was thinking about other states categories - as there is the propensity for a specific focus on a specific dataset (Nat Trust, Heritage Regster for example) - and it looked like a possible avenue for putting sites that are not on any register as such - but because of their specific qualities nevertheless deserve recognition despite not being in the specific registers... I can think of places and sites in Tasmania and WA that are not on registers for whatever omission, might qualify for such a category - hope that clarifies the question - JarrahTree 04:39, 9 May 2017 (UTC)

I note that Category:Historic sites in Australia exists and defines itself as "This category is intended to encompass all historic sites which have been recognized by official designation or by listing in a heritage register" and has a somewhat motley collection of pages and subcategories (which does not include Category:Historical sites in Queensland!). Since we generally do have a set of categories for things in various heritage registers most states, e.g. Category:Queensland Heritage Register, I tend to concur with your thinking that the Category:Historical sites in Australia and/or similar categories for each state could be used to catch anything that is a place of some historical significance but not specifically on a heritage register (which would be subcategories of the Historical sites categories). I am not sure exactly what the criteria for "historic significance" would be (I guess I am fearful of finding every town listed in it on the grounds that "a school opened there in 1872" or somesuch). What I would personally be keen on using it for is for articles about notable places that no longer exist. Heritage registers usually only include existing places, since the purpose is to provide them with some measure of legal protection against demolition or alteration. So the Brisbane Trades Hall is the sort of article that I would see as suitable for Category:Historic(al) sites in Queensland/Australia. Kerry (talk) 05:05, 9 May 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply on this some things to think about - a further problem with the state orientation of the work to date, and specific cities or area, means that there is a small tendency for WP:UNDUE to creep into all this, as there are states/cities which do not even self identify their states, cities or regions as being sufficiently whatever (only today found that WP Sydney talk page redirects to the national noticeboard) either with person power, interest or capacity to equal your hard work for QLD. There is a lot more to this all than I can do now, but my personal preference is to let it all lie as is - and have a conversation down the line, later on the multitude of issues that actually arise from what you and I have written.... it is almost a whole conference theme in itself - ( my shout, your shout, someone else? - Angkor, Borodudur or Taj Mahal) (joking, unless we had the right contacts to send us there at their expense of course) JarrahTree 05:19, 9 May 2017 (UTC)

Yes, I am tempted to leave it all alone for the moment. There is also Category:Australian historic places which seems to me to be somewhat semantic similar to Category:Historic sites in Australia, but I guess the semantic difference is that the first is places of significance to Australian history which might include places like Gallipoli which are not in Australia, whereas I assume the second is places in Australia of historic significance (but not necessarily to Australians), e.g. Houtman Abrolhos might be significant to the Netherlands history. Did you know that you can review your changes visually?

When you are finished editing the page, type your edit summary and then choose "Review your changes".

In visual mode, you will see additions, removals, new links, and formatting highlighted. Other changes, such as changing the size of an image, are described in notes on the side.

Click the toggle button to switch between visual and wikitext diffs.

The wikitext diff is the same diff tool that is used in the wikitext editors and in the page history.

You can read and help translate the user guide, which has more information about how to use the visual editor.

Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor Team has spent most of their time supporting the 2017 wikitext editor mode which is available inside the visual editor as a Beta Feature, and adding the new visual diff tool. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. You can find links to the work finished each week at mw:VisualEditor/Weekly triage meetings. Their current priorities are fixing bugs, supporting the 2017 wikitext editor as a beta feature, and improving the visual diff tool.

Recent changes

A new wikitext editing mode is available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices. The 2017 wikitext editor has the same toolbar as the visual editor and can use the citoid service and other modern tools. Go to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures to enable the ⧼Visualeditor-preference-newwikitexteditor-label⧽.

A new visual diff tool is available in VisualEditor's visual mode. You can toggle between wikitext and visual diffs. More features will be added to this later. In the future, this tool may be integrated into other MediaWiki components. [1]

The team have added multi-column support for lists of footnotes. The <references /> block can automatically display long lists of references in columns on wide screens. This makes footnotes easier to read. You can request multi-column support for your wiki. [2]

Other changes:

You can now use your web browser's function to switch typing direction in the new wikitext mode. This is particularly helpful for RTL language users like Urdu or Hebrew who have to write JavaScript or CSS. You can use Command+Shift+X or Control+Shift+X to trigger this. [3]
The way to switch between the visual editing mode and the wikitext editing mode is now consistent. There is a drop-down menu that shows the two options. This is now the same in desktop and mobile web editing, and inside things that embed editing, such as Flow. [4]
The Categories item has been moved to the top of the Page options menu (from clicking on the icon) for quicker access. [5] There is also now a "Templates used on this page" feature there. [6]
You can now create <chem> tags (sometimes used as <ce>) for chemical formulas inside the visual editor. [7]
Tables can be set as collapsed or un-collapsed. [8]
The Special character menu now includes characters for Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics and angle quotation marks (‹› and ⟨⟩) . The team thanks the volunteer developer, Tpt. [9]
A bug caused some section edit conflicts to blank the rest of the page. This has been fixed. The team are sorry for the disruption. [10]
There is a new keyboard shortcut for citations: Control+Shift+K on a PC, or Command+Shift+K on a Mac. It is based on the keyboard shortcut for making links, which is Control+K on a PC or Command+K on a Mac. [11]

Future changes

The VisualEditor team is working with the Community Tech team on a syntax highlighting tool. It will highlight matching pairs of <ref> tags and other types of wikitext syntax. You will be able to turn it on and off. It will first become available in VisualEditor's built-in wikitext mode, maybe late in 2017. [12]
The kind of button used to Show preview, Show changes, and finish an edit will change in all WMF-supported wikitext editors. The new buttons will use OOjs UI. The buttons will be larger, brighter, and easier to read. The labels will remain the same. You can test the new button by editing a page and adding &ooui=1 to the end of the URL, like this: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Project:Sandbox?action=edit&ooui=1 The old appearance will no longer be possible, even with local CSS changes. The outdated 2006 wikitext editor will be removed later this year. It is used by approximately 0.03% of active editors. See a list of editing tools on mediawiki.org if you are uncertain which one you use. [14]

The Wikimedia movement strategy core team and working groups have completed reviewing the more than 1800 thematic statements we received from the first discussion. They have identified 5 themes that were consistent across all the conversations - each with their own set of sub-themes. These are not the final themes, just an initial working draft of the core concepts.

You are invited to join the online and offline discussions taking place on these 5 themes. This round of discussions will take place between now and June 12th. You can discuss as many as you like; we ask you to participate in the ones that are most (or least) important to you.

State Strategic Tourist Routes in Queensland

Hi Kerry, It appears that the travel times given in the Qld Govt refs for these routes are estimated elapsed times including rest, eat and sleep allowances, not driving times. Yes, that's what I was guessing, when they come up with a time that suggested they were travelling at about 10 km/h. But it seems they are inconsistent in their reporting because some of the times stated do seem consistent with what I would expect for just driving (where the numbers suggest about 80km/h). @Downsize43: Self links are discouraged in articles (other than to sections). But these are not self-links as they are redirects, and a redirect might sprout into a separate article at some time, so redirects are a bit of a grey zone as some are just alternative names and probably should be removed, others are a case of "best article to touch on the topic" (so probably should stay). Former names are sort-of in-between as often former names of a place can be associated with a very different use and potentially separate articles. In this case, the former names are probably not likely to sprout their own article. Summary: do whatever you like :-) Kerry (talk) 01:50, 13 June 2017 (UTC)

This is to inform you that an attempt is being made to overturn an RfC that you voted on (2 RfCs, actually, one less than six months ago and another a year ago). The new RfC is at:

Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)#RfC: Allow private schools to be characterized as non-affiliated as well as religious, in infobox?

Specifically, it asks that "religion = none" be allowed in the infobox.

The first RfC that this new RfC is trying to overturn is:

15 June 2015 RfC: RfC: Religion infobox entries for individuals that have no religion.

The result of that RfC was "unambiguously in favour of omitting the parameter altogether for 'none' " and despite the RfC title, additionally found that "There's no obvious reason why this would not apply to historical or fictional characters, institutions etc.", and that nonreligions listed in the religion entry should be removed when found "in any article".

The second RfC that this new RfC is trying to overturn is:

31 December 2015 RfC: RfC: Religion in infoboxes.

The result of that RfC was that the "in all Wikipedia articles, without exception, nonreligions should not be listed in the Religion= parameter of the infobox.".

Another opinion needed

Hi Kerry, can you please take a look at Draft:Commonwealth of Australia Gazette - as a librarian, you may have a better perspective and be able to help here. The draft was started by another editor back in March, then Doug Butler recently fleshed it out and submitted it, but this has now been knocked back twice, most recently on the grounds of being "not adequately supported by reliable sources". However, of all the comparable articles in the List of government gazettes, only one has more citations (the US government's Federal Register, and it has more than twice as many as the articles for the Canadian and UK governments' official publications. Given the subject matter of the article, I thought that this rejection was very unreasonable, and trouted the most recent reviewing editor, but his response seems rather lame. (Disclaimer: I have met Doug Butler a few times when he came to the Adelaide Wikipedia User Group meetings I organised over the past few years, and consider him one of our best local editors.) @JarrahTree: There is Template:Brisbane landmarks but I don't think there's a corresponding category, so somebody cares about the topic. I don't get too engaged with it because it's inherently subjective what you regard as a landmark, whereas being a suburb of Brisbane or a heritage property in Brisbane is decidable on objective criteria. Kerry, thank you for your reply - I personally would have been much more effusive about getting that level of coverage in incite here on the noticeboard... - but the issue of wikipedia in the news (see email in the next day or soon re that) - there will be a page on the website sooner than later - and hope if you get reported in more exotic locations - you will be able to add yourself! I cannot get over the effectiveness of wikiclubs - and I do think it is an important and valuable way of getting editing legitimised and acceptable in the eyes of otherwise diffident areas of resistance, so to speak JarrahTree 00:25, 9 July 2017 (UTC)

Of course, the practical problem with "filing" this article in a WMAU media file is that it is 1) copyright so not able to be uploaded and 2) behind a paywall so you can't really link to it. Such is life! This is one of the reasons I linked GLAM/SLQ page to tweets and other social media, because I can't link things like the Incite article. While social media doesn't constitute reliable sources from the perspective of citations in Wikipedia articles, I think for a "WMAU in the media" page on the WMAU website, they are fine for that purpose. Beenleigh

This is probably the most recent photo available (2016). I searched on Flickr and see images from 2014 like this one which appears to be of the abandoned distillery. Not sure if it was refurbished or maybe it is being made in a different distillery. Any ideas? --CNMall41 (talk) 22:32, 21 July 2017 (UTC)

@CNMall41: The distillery is my local area and I know it has recently reopened as a "craft" rum distillery after having been closed for a few years (so the 2014 Flickr photos are probably from that period of closure). The "2016" photo you found is well-known to me (I uploaded it!). I found that photo on heritage register's website on a webpage last updated on 20 January 2016 (hence the date noted on Commons) but generally heritage register photos are taken at the time of their listing, so it probably was taken around 2004. The only way to know what it currently looks like is to go out and take some photos, hence the use of the template to alert local Wikipedians to the need. If you are not familiar with the template, it puts the photo into a local area category (Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Logan City in this case), which includes a map which shows us locals where to go to take the required photos. Perhaps the template is used in a different way in your local area. Kerry (talk) 00:24, 22 July 2017 (UTC)

@Grahamec: Yes, but I am expecting the ABS to release the 2016 census data cube "real soon now", so we should be able to automate the population by having the infobox call wikidata to supply the population values (famous last words!). Hey, happy to defer to your Queensland knowledge here. This is kind of a difficult issue for us for a few reasons - after all, contemporary newspapers and even many books (especially, but not exclusively, older ones) default to referring to everyone by initials exclusively well into the 1950s and beyond. (A particularly famous case: [15]) However we have generally avoided initials on Wikipedia - the only other examples I can think of are H. V. Evatt (which I also don't really agree with - why not Bert?) and H. G. Nelson. Generally this is really a style issue - I've seen plenty of books referring to E.G. Whitlam and R.G. Menzies, and even occasionally J.M. Fraser, R.J.L. Hawke and P.J. Keating. Trove of course does skew to older sources too: a Google Books certainly reveals a bit more on the Tom Ryan front ([16]), although admittedly not nearly as much as T.J. [17]. I won't object if you want to move it back.

(Sidenote: I really hate WP:COMMONNAME, and am getting in a bad habit of whinging about it to whoever I can. I'll spare you most of it, but suffice to say I wish we just had an ACCURATENAME guideline and could have everyone living at their full, unambiguous names - so Thomas Joseph Ryan here. I imagine his family and friends might have called him Tom, but I suspect he couldn't be commonly known as Tom Ryan in public life because of the earlier Tommy Ryan (politican). Both were Thomas Joseph Ryan, both were Labor, and both were the member for Electoral district of Barcoo, but were not related to one another as far as I know. That's quite a coincidence, and I am guessing that led to a need to distinguish between the two men and why T.J. acquired the moniker he did (whether by his choice or the newspapers). I think I will move the article back to T.J. Ryan as Tom Ryan really doesn't sit comfortably with me. I might add in a hatnote for Tommy Ryan (whose own article hatnotes T.J.'s). Qld MLAs/MLCs

In unfortunate timing, I have actually just moved off Queensland politicians into SA; I am moving through the candidates pages and bringing them all back to the formation of the Nationalist Party in 1917. Once I've finished SA and WA back to that point, though, I will be returning to Queensland (and Victoria and Tasmania) and attempting to sort out the godawful mess that is pre-1917 liberal/conservative party/party-adjacent politics (candidates pages are a great way of clarifying these sorts of things before looking at electorate pages or the members lists). In the distant future when that happens, I will certainly keep an eye out for possible candidates for you - if you haven't got to them all by then, of course! I would offer to send some SA politicians your way (there are MANY tiny stubs), but I know you're Queensland-focused and anyway SA has by far the worst parliamentary website for biographies so they'd be a lot tougher to fix for trainees. (If I may offer a few non-biographical suggestions: I threw together Northern Country Party from very little and it could use some work, and the virtually-untouched-since-2006-or-so Douglas Credit Party also needs sorting out since I suspect it's trying to cover about three separate parties at the moment. I don't know if these might be too complicated for your purposes though.)

As a final point, bless you for the work you do with trainees. Goodness knows we need more active editors and if these training programs net us even a handful it would be a huge boon for the project (and of course even if they don't they still produce valuable work). If you don't use it for anything else, use the VE for working with tables (I couldn't go back to doing it with syntax). There are a few advanced things you can't do with tables in the Visual Editor, but you can just switch back to the source editor to do those after you've done the bulk of the work of populating the table visually. It's a massive time saver. I use the VE myself now for most of my editing of content and mainly use source editor for heavy-duty template work. The VE works quite well at populating simple templates, and indeed very well if that template has had Template Data added to it so the VE can present it to the user to fill in with information/examples on the fields, marked as mandatory/suggested/deprecated etc, which are the basic fields (always shown) and which are the more advanced fields (user asks for these) and so on. I have added Template Data to my favourite templates because I find it very convenient when I use templates. I feel using both editors makes me more productive as I can use the best tool for any task and can flick between them even within a single edit. Try it! Preferences > Editing > make sure "Disable the VE" is un-ticked and set "editing mode" to "Show both tabs" and you can then use either one as much or as little as you want. Yes, it would be nicer if the VE supported section editing and I am not sure if this is a major problem to implement or simply not a priority. I thought Flow was "dead" but evidently not. It's in the "major problem to implement" category, especially for re-used citations (either one already on the page in some other section, or one that you re-use in that section [because VisualEditor might auto-assign it a ref name that has already been used in a different part of the page]). VEFriendly is broken

I'm going to go turn off {{VEFriendly}}, because something's gone dreadfully wrong with it. It's showing raw HTML inside VisualEditor's wikitext mode, rather than the expected visual mode.
