Synonyms[edit]

Hi, I've just reverted you changes as Spilotantha, and it seems that there are a lot more similar changes that will need to be removed, because of a problem with what "synonym" means in botany.

One problem is that "synonym" in biology has a very different meaning from "synonym" in ordinary language. In biology it is not correct to say that two genus names are synonymous, one will be the correct name (for a given circumscription), and the other might be a synonym of the first, but it doesn't work the other way around. The other problem is that two names at different ranks are not technically synonyms. When "Masdevallia" is subdivided according to one taxonomic opinion, then Spilotantha is the correct name, and Masdevallia subgen. Amanda is a name formerly used, or a name used in a different classification.

Sorry, but this is important and rather messy. Best wishes, Nadiatalent (talk) 22:11, 7 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Synonyms[edit]

Dear Nadia, wonderful! I am an undergraduate at Cornell University with an interest in Orchid Systematics. I've just started learning about nomenclature. I understand that biology and nomenclature are separate. I read through the Synonym (taxonomy) page and I understand now. I thought that when I said that the name is a "taxonomic synonym" it would communicate that two names represent the same taxonomic entity. I see now that the names are not the same taxonomic entity because they are differently ranked.

Excellent! I'm so glad to hear that you are interested in Orchid systematics and understand synonymy, and that the Synonym (taxonomy) page that some of us have corrected quite recently has been helpful! You've no doubt noticed just in that page that the differences between zoological and botanical nomenclature (and, of course, ordinary language) are great enough that there is considerable potential for confusion. We are working on it, but there are so many pages in Wikipedia that deal with related matters that there are sure to be quite a few remaining problems. If you find anything that you don't understand, just ask me on my talk page, or ask at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Plants. Congratulations on being at Cornell, here in Canada we envy the wonderful botanical resources available there. Best wishes, Nadiatalent (talk) 19:07, 8 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I'm happy to know there is someone I can ask for advice.

There's quite a few of us. No doubt you'll get to know people one-by-one. Nadiatalent (talk) 21:42, 8 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
