Church of St Mary the Blessed Virgin, Sompting[edit]

St Botolph's Church, Botolphs[edit]

Thanks for your note. In the long term, it is my intention that every notable place of worship (of any denomination) in Sussex should have an article. This would include as a minimum every one with listed status. I have been working my way round Sussex by district, creating the "lists of places of worship" you will have seen and determining which churches definitely need articles. Four districts are now complete in this respect (Brighton & Hove, Crawley, Worthing and Adur); seven others have articles needed – anything between about 10 and 60 per district (!); and I haven't even started the other two districts (Rother and Chichester), although Rother is imminent. Have a look at User:Hassocks5489/WIP and go to the drop-down boxes in the "Places of worship to write about for the Sussex lists" section to see the churches in question. I have enough sources to be able to do any of them immediately, but as with everything else it's just finding the time! If you fancy starting any of those at any time, I will be happy to collaborate on an expansion.

St John the Baptist's is indeed a fascinating church; fortunately it's also my nearest ancient church (about 20 minutes walk from my house), so I have visited many times. The wall paintings are surprisingly extensive. A couple of weeks ago I was fortunate enough to take a week off and travel round the churches of Rother district, taking many pictures. There were plenty of very interesting ones over there as well, and some unexpected surprises! PS. I have nominated St Botolph's at Did You Know. Henfield[edit]

Thanks for the stained glass window picture; nicely captured. My friend kindly offered to drive me round various Horsham district villages to fill in gaps for the List of places of worship in Horsham (district); by the time we got to Henfield my battery was nearly out and the light was fading (maybe we spent too long in pubs on the way!), so I had to rush round the exterior of St Peter's and take only a couple of shots. Partridge Green[edit]

Thanks for your note the other day about the church. It was another one I visited when I did the Horsham district trip a few weeks ago. Quite awkward to photograph because of the encroachment of houses. You'll see I added a few books to the bibliography; these are the only ones in my collection with any relevant info, so I'll integrate that when I get a chance in the next week or two. St Mary's Church, West Chiltington[edit]

Great start here; I'm pleased you've got hold of the church guide, as I haven't come across it yet in any library! I've added the "usual" books which I know have some material on the church. I'll start working on it properly tonight when I get home. I had found a possible DYK hook in my previous researches for this one, but I think the Christ on a Wheel mural might be better than what I had (somebody praising the church with a slightly interesting quote). I don't know how comprehensive the church guide is in terms of the parish history, but could you check to see if there is any reference to the existence of a Mission Room in West Chiltington Common (the main settlement within the parish)? – I have seen one marked on old OS maps, although it has long since disappeared. I haven't been able to find out any more about it. (It may not even have been an Anglican mission room, of course.) Hassocks5489 (tickets please!) 12:26, 17 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Chichester district churches[edit]

Hi Kinnerton. Just to let you know, I recently compiled a spreadsheet of all past and present places of worship in Chichester district, to help with the eventual creation of the "List of..." (probably early next year). From that, I have now established which of those are notable from a WP point of view and which lack an article, so I have put one of those drop-down lists on my user subpage (see here). Sandown Barrack Battery[edit]

Hi Kinnerton, I was looking through your Carnot wall article intending to review it. I noticed that the final paragraph with the list of forts was uncited so thought that I would click on one of them to perhaps find a source for that list. Sandown Barrack Battery turned out to be more that 90% a copyvio of two sources. I've blanked those parts and will start to replace it with properly sourced text but I'm off on a bit of a wikibreak tomorrow and may not finish the job. If you felt like finishing off what I started, I'm sure that there's enough material to get a 5x expansion from the blanked version that could be added to your hook - no problems if that doesn't take your fancy.
