Günther von Schwarzburg - quick question

Hi, I was expanding it today and noticed you list this as one of the references:

  • Corneilson, Paul (1992), 'Vampyr, Der' in The New Grove Dictionary of Opera, ed. Stanley Sadie (London) ISBN 0-333-73432-7

Are you sure 'Vampyr, Der' is the right article? Best, Voceditenore (talk) 18:10, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

  • Another question about the opera I've expanded the synopsis a bit today. I was also going to say that it was loosely based on the historical events. I haven't added that yet, but it seems to me that if the role list is correct, it does deviate substantially from the historical events. For one thing, Karl's mother died in 1330 (long before the succession crisis events took place) and her name was Elisabeth not Asperta. Also, is it Asperta or Asberta? I've seen it more often with the "b". Does Grove list the role with a "p"? (I'll reply about the sources/references thing on my talk page.) Best, Voceditenore (talk) 14:15, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
    • Have just added another bit re ref. format on my talk page (to keep the thread together). Best, Voceditenore (talk) 10:28, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

opera titles - capitalization

Sorry about the headache. But I noticed on my CD's the titles are capitalized. "Il Turco in Italia" makes more sense than "Il turco in italia." Just my opinion, though.

I won't be on here much longer so there isn't anything to say really. I just came back to tie up loose ends. Ciao and best of luck.Broadweighbabe (talk) 21:01, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

Opera and Bio projects

Do you mean that the Opera project is now affiliated with WPBiography? Because if not, it's okay for articles to be tagged for more than one project... Katharineamy (talk) 06:44, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

All good, then - I personally think it's good for pages to be tagged with any applicable projects, as it only increases the number of people who might work on improving them! Katharineamy (talk) 13:20, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

I was only peripherally aware of Singer and Singer1 (there are about 160 in total). It's amusing to see the Opera Project banner on Sarah Brightman's Talk page (though I see that she's appeared in The Merry Widow and The Pirates of Penzance), but a brief scan down the lists seems to indicate that they're pretty much all ours. The only problem with the re-redirect is if HappyMelon only deals with the old Opera template, but if the articles have Opera cats they'll get picked up on the category trawl if they haven't already been done on the template trawl.

You may have noticed that Melonbot has now got the all-clear, so I've elbowed HM again. Also, did you see his no-can-do note to me about the size of the Comments typeface on the banner?

Also on the banner, I notice that a number of banners have a link to their project's Portal (e.g. Template:WikiProject Theatre). As Jay is doing an excellent job on our Portal, I'd vote for doing the same with our banner. --GuillaumeTell 15:48, 22 May 2008 (UTC) (I see you've snazzed up your .sig too!)

Roy Henderson and two similar articles

Only English operatic baritones should be used for those three articles, since "Wikipedia" only lists the undercategory when a category is divided into at least another one. Extremely sexy (talk) 16:26, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Hello Kleinzach! I just created that, can you please check and correct grammar and syntax? I was little tipsy yesterday, so it seems to me more czenglish than english:) Thank you for your time and help... Vejvančický (talk) 11:05, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Inline request

Sorry, I don't buy into the idea that three editors get to create a guideline that is then incorporated by reference onto all sorts of other Wikipedia articles, especially when that guideline falsely asserts consensus on what is clearly a controversial issue. I am fairly disinterested in this affair--I don't add infoboxes or delete them, never have, it's not my bag--but I won't tolerate little nag tags being placed across the encyclopedia on all sorts of articles because a small group of people decide they want to pre-empt the creation of infoboxes with a bogus guideline. I'm trying to think of some place outside of the Opera Wikiproject where we might bring this up to get some outside perspectives. Wikipedia:Policies_and_guidelines is about the best I've been able to find. Any other suggestions? Robert K S (talk) 07:16, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

You recently removed the opera banner on this article's talk page. Why would you do that? Have you read the large section on theatrical drama in the article? That's the reason why the banner is there in the first place.--Pericles of AthensTalk 07:23, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

I see. I wasn't aware that it focused exclusively on Western opera. I would add a different banner in its place, but there is no WikiProject for Chinese opera, as evident by Talk:Chinese opera. In the meantime, WikiProject Opera will have to do.--Pericles of AthensTalk 07:37, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
Changed it to theatre instead...--Pericles of AthensTalk 07:55, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

Gräfin Dubarry/Der Evangelimann

I can certainly do the latter. The former is more difficult but I can see what's in .de and mock up a stub. I also have some synopses to do for some of the other blue-links, which will overflow into June. I find that time flies much faster since I retired than it did when I was working! --GuillaumeTell 11:02, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Prod and redirects

You put a prod on a large amount of redirects...I just wanted to let you know that the proposed deletion process isn't used for redirects. You'll want to nominate them over at RFD. Personally, though, I don't see anything wrong with them. --UsaSatsui (talk) 09:35, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi, you recently removed the {{WikiProject Opera}} template from "Boosey & Hawkes", but it's just been reinserted by MelonBot, probably because the article is in the category "Opera publishers". You may wish to remove that category if you think it inappropriate, or speak to the owner of the bot about refining what it does. — Cheers, JackLee talk 19:19, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

MelonBot added WikiProject banner in Portal:Opera talkpage, for that, now we have 2 tags. Which one you think we should use? - Jay (talk) 11:05, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

I created "portal banner" because at that time I wasn’t sure what to put in there, simply because portal is not an article. However if you think the banner should have been “article banner”, you could just remove “portal banner”. I actually prefer “article” than portal. About whether we should put a banner or not, I think yes, we should. It is to tell readers or other contributors that the portal falls under Opera project - Jay (talk) 15:11, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

Repeated bannering by MelonBot

  • Portal:Opera is in Category:Opera. I'm not clear what is wrong with it having the banner. Isn't it part of the Opera Project?
  • Russian Private Opera, although a redirect, is in Category: Opera companies. Most redirects don't have categories, but giving it the category means that this title appears in italics in the category listing, which may or may not be a good thing in this case (I've never heard of it). Might be useful for all those Paris opera houses that kept changing their names, for example.

Rose Marie (operetta), etc. question

Hi. I noticed that you removed the opera project banner from Rose Marie. Are you sure you want to do that? The scope of the opera project covers operetta, and even though Rose Marie is sometimes musicalized, it is usually performed by light opera companies or even opera companies. It seems to me that it is OK to have both the opera and musical theatre banners. However, if we can choose only one, I would suggest that the opera banner is the more appropriate one, because the musicals project *excludes* operettas in its "scope". I would think that all the Friml and Romberg operettas are in the same boat.... -- Ssilvers (talk) 23:02, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

It's OK by me if you want to reverse the banners and put Opera rather than Musicals (likewise presumably for other Broadway operettas). I had a look at it and thought it was more musical - and more Musical Project - than Operetta (Opera). The fact it's labelled as an operetta is only one factor in this.--Kleinzach 23:21, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Thanks. I also replaced the operetta and opera cats, OK? Best regards, -- Ssilvers (talk) 23:30, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Deletion of page move redirects that were a year old

Hi there. Could I ask you to look in on the discussion at the bottom of the section here? Thanks. Carcharoth (talk) 07:30, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

I replied over there. Thanks. BTW, your note at the bottom of the page ("write above this line") doesn't work when people add sections. There are ways to do this cleanly, probably involving transcluding from a subpage, but it can get complicated. Just letting you know there is a solution if you want to avoid moving it down to the bottom all the time. Carcharoth (talk) 11:11, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
I'm afraid I don't know, though I have seen it done successfully elsewhere! Maybe ask at WP:HELPDESK? Carcharoth (talk) 05:57, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Music directors (opera)

You seem to have completely forgotten that, in an email to me on Friday 30 May at 0814 your time, you said "How about Category:Opera music directors? Or maybe better, Category:Music directors (opera) if we are allowed parentheses? I see no problem in having another cat if there are a few articles to go in it."

I can't see why the opera project should cover opera houses and opera companies and opera managers without also covering the Music Directors of those companies. And nearly all have entries in Opera Grove, I might add (as do the various directors, designers, operettas and whatnot that you don't seem to approve of).

As far as the CM project is concerned, my recollection is that they don't spend much time on conductors. I am not suggesting a category "opera conductors", you'll notice - just conductors involved in the management of opera companies. I created Richard Farnes myself because no-one else had done so. As I've said before, lots of Wikiprojects overlap with each other and articles have multiple banners. It isn't a problem. --GuillaumeTell 10:52, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi both. Kleinzach, I left you a reply re azione teatrale on my talk page. Guillaume Tell, I agree with you about the category of "Music directors (opera)". It's useful. Plus, I have no problem at all with multiple banners on pages. Conductors like Antonio Pappano, for example should definitely have the OP banner. I'd also suggest adding a section about how the term is used in opera houses in Music director, which concentrates solely on symphony orchestras (with a brief mention of musicals). Best, Voceditenore (talk) 07:39, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for confirming the Italian plural. Regarding the other matter, we'll need to discuss it on the Project, but it's important to see the whole picture. Almost all the conflicts that arise are related to multiple bannering. This is not surprising since different projects have different guidelines. The last bot run involved a series of tedious situations that took time to sort out. --Kleinzach 14:23, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

Doesn't belong

Hi there, I noticed you removed the tag from Ned Bouhalassa as not belonging, yet he is under three different composer categories and is named a composer in the first line of the article. It's your project so maybe there are some guidelines I don't know; it just struck me as a bit odd. Also, were you close to the quake when it happened? I know Japan is a whole country; but be safe. §hep¡Talk to me! 00:26, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

You replied at User talk:Michael Bednarek (can we keep this thread in one place?):
At the moment only two of the 30-odd genres of opera have subcats for composers. If you want to express an opinion on this see Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Opera#Category:British_opera_composers. The idea is to consolidate all the articles under Category:Opera composers. Best. --Kleinzach 02:50, 17 June 2008 (UTC)
I'm afraid I don't quite understand your reply or most of the discussion you point to —although it seems to me that no consensus about anything was reached there— and how that discussion would relate to the depopulation of Category:Operetta composers. This category seems quite useful to me and I don't understand why it should be removed. Michael Bednarek (talk) 03:07, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi.. After some time I come to bother you :). I found "forgotten" and very inaccurate article, I tried to improve and add references to Raphael Schecter, but the title of the article is incorrect and I (still cannot use the tool perfectly) don't know how to change it... Hi. If you found some refs for this article - please add them to it. Thanks. --Kleinzach 06:59, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

Sorry, I was not specifically objecting to the PROD so much as "Denying" deletion while going through the PROD nominations. I did a quick background check and simply don't believe it qualifies for PROD. We shouldn't try to eliminate every poorly cited stub but rather only those that are truly not notable. The others we should fix. I don't have time to do the background research at present for this one, but I'll try to soon. In the meantime you are welcome to AFD it.--Doug.(talk contribs) 21:36, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

I wasn't planning on implementing the banner I mearly wanted to test it briefly. I was going to revert it back in couple minutes.Nrswanson (talk) 22:51, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

Sounds like a good plan to me. Where do we go to get it checked?Nrswanson (talk) 23:01, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

The template is saved at User talk:Nrswanson/sandbox. I went ahead and got rid of the Wikiproject Music. Nrswanson (talk) 23:13, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

Looks good. Go ahead and have an expert look at it. Also, what's up with the C-class?Nrswanson (talk) 00:09, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
Ah perhaps. It's for articles that have only a limmited amount of information available so they can be upgraded from start/stub. Anyways. Go ahead and submit the template.Nrswanson (talk) 00:17, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

If it were a run of the mill opera article I wouldn't bother but the articles I hit with these are on the List of important operas and therefore should be held to a higher standard as core articles.Nrswanson (talk) 01:32, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

I maybe tagged ten articles tops with a one source tag and I went through the entire list so is it really that big of a deal? It's only ten articles. I did tag a bunch others that didn't have any.Nrswanson (talk) 01:47, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
Kleinzach I'm not planning on going on a tag spree here. I'm only doing it for the operas on this one list. I'm done. It's ten or so articles and not worth getting upset over. Hopefully it will encourage the improvement of those articles.Nrswanson (talk) 01:55, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

Opera Project banner

Hi. You were kind enough to help with the composers banner. May we ask your advice about the Opera banner? We have a prototype at User talk:Nrswanson/sandbox (with a test banner at Talk:Amanda Forsythe). This is based on Template:WikiProject Philadelphia which allows for three options (no rating/rating no comments/rating and comments) of small print text at the foot of the page. Is the coding OK? (We are keeping this in user space to check it - after that we will show it to the Opera Project for approval before implementing it.) Thanks in advance and best regards. --Kleinzach 00:29, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

I've cleaned up the code a bit (mostly switch statements and whitespace. Otherwise, it seems to work just fine. Might be worth creating the categories for the importance ratings if you're going to have the parameter active. Anyhow, it looks just fine now. Adam McCormick (talk) 15:55, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for this. The project actually debated the importance scale issue and decided not to have one. I think it would be best to take it out completely if this could be done. --Kleinzach 22:36, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

As a follow-up I was wondering if the Opera Project had ever produced some guidelines on notability? For example where is the line drawn on the scale that goes from student production to the Met? They would be very helpful! almost-instinct 22:15, 28 June 2008 (UTC)
Yes that does, thank you. I'm not sure that I'm the man to de-hype this particular page, but there are a few other singers whose pages I feel ought to have a better overview of what they've sung, eg. I managed to find a list for Bryn Terfel, and would like to do something similar for Josephine Barstow and Dmitri Hvorostovsky. Is there a particular page that you would recommend as a model? almost-instinct 09:41, 1 July 2008 (UTC)
Thank you. May I ask you a couple of questions about citing?
Firstly I've referenced some recordings for the Alberto Remedios page, but haven't yet done them properly at I wasn't sure which cite template to use. Might I ask you to do the one for The Midsummer Marriage recording, which already has the catalogue number? I can then copy what you do there for the other one and I'll know for the future. Secondly, if I were able to get the Hvorostovsky and Terfel's agencies to email me lists of all the productions their clients have been in, would I be able to cite them? I had a vague idea that I could post them on commons or on the talk pages. In the case of Hvorostovsky I think it would be very interesting to do something like the table done for Domingo, so one could trace the path Hv. is taking from his natural lyric repertoire into dramatic roles almost-instinct 12:02, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
