Copy-editing[edit]

Are you good at doing copy edits? I need someone to look over Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 and Control (Janet Jackson album). If you choose to do so, thankyou in advance. The Bookkeeper (of the Occult) 00:00, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Multiple Accounts[edit]

No problem with that as long as it's made clear that you operate both accounts but not at the same time. Easiest way is to create the account and redirect its User & Talk pages to your main one. You can put a disclaimer on your pages using {{doppelganger}} so that way nobody is in any doubt. Let me know if there are any problems. Cheers. --Rodhullandemu 19:10, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ayyavazhi - Copy edit help[edit]

Sir, I found you from the LOCE page. Iam a non-native english editor in Wikipedia and so my English is not well enough to write an article in FA standard. For over several months I've worked in the Ayyavazhi article and've brought it to the present level. The article has also been nominated for FAC and GA but failed. The most important among few reasons is the writen language (low standard english). The other reason then was the citations and now it was rectified. By now the only problem, if exist, may be the 'written language' which may be cleared out by a copy-edit from a good copy-editor well-versed in English.

To be noted, The article also was requested for copy-edit in the LOCE page and was over there for nearly 1 year. But no one did it. Later the request was archived. I wish to nominate the article for FAC. I've seen your user page and noted you could be able to write with proffesional level in English. I feel it will be very much helpful if you can help me. I kindly request you to do the Copy-edit work in the article and very much request you to give your suggestions for promoting it to FAC level. Also I request to be patient while copy-editing because there are too many citations (foot notes) in the article and so while editing in edit box it may confuse you.

Earlier I made individual requests to a couple of others users too from LoCE. They being not fluent with the topic refused to help. Thanks - PAUL RAJ 19:27, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thats great! Thanks very much for your help. I'll try to work you suggested this evening. Once again, Thanks very much, Sir. - PAUL RAJ 03:22, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sir, after thanking you once again for your hard work and useful help in the Ayyavazhi article, I request one more help. I worked in the article and went across the article and I feel the article is content wise comprehensive. And the help I need is, Can you please go through the article and make sure that the article is fit to be nominated for FAC, especially as per Wiki MoS. I was asking this to you because the article was nominated 2 times earlier and was rejected. A word from such an established and well-versed user like you will help me go through. Thanks. - PAUL RAJ 18:30, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'll take care of it Kod.After my initial sweeps, you mind revising and checking refs, etc? This is a controversial subject.I'll copyedit but Michael Jackson is not my specialty.--Xp54321 (Hello!Contribs) 22:00, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am not a vandal[edit]

I edited a section of the "Globalization" page because what is shown as the top line is not a sentence. It makes no sense. It reads "Generally, support of Free Trade, Capitalism, and Democracy - systems which are widely believed to facilitate globalization." This is no sentence and I feel like it should be changed so it makes sense. Don't label me a vandal until you read the change. Please change this or contact the person who wrote it so they can. Thanks —Preceding unsigned comment added by 160.94.28.165 (talk) 21:31, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your edit is POV. The sentence reads so that readers who don't believe in free trade, etc. aren't offended. By saying that they DO facilitate globalization, you are making a fact that you haven't referenced and you can't support. I'm sorry if I marked it as vandalism, but I saw it as such. I'll change it for you if you want. All the best, Kodster (heLLo) (Me did that) 21:38, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Copy edits[edit]

I'm going to give your article another look tonight, could you, if you have time, give the MJ article, one last copy edit? I'm going to give FA a go first thing tomorrow. I've added quite a bit of content since anyone last checked it. Sections that have changed are: 1987-1990, 1991-1992, 1993-1994, and finally the section on music videos. Since I've added to these sections I can almost guarantee that I have messed up the number consistence between words and figures (something I always seem to do hehe). I will spend some more time on your article now. — Realist2 (Speak) 23:14, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, I'll do it. Good luck with MJ, I'll be sure to comment on FA review. All the best, Kodster (heLLo) (Me did that) 23:16, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'll help out as well R2.And give me the link for the FA nom once it appears.:)--Xp54321 (Hello!Contribs) 23:20, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
We need to get you another GA article, it's nearly a month since your last one, I went about 6 weeks without getting anything to GA (I was spending all my time on MJ and Thriller at FA) and it was really depressing. I still get a lot of satisfaction getting articles to GA. Sure Xp, just avoid edit conflicts with Kod, I hate those darn conflicts. — Realist2 (Speak) 23:23, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
LOL, thanks. I can't get no satisfaction without GA's (possibly FA's in the future). :-) All the best, Kodster (heLLo) (Me did that) 23:25, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Done FINALLY, two hours later...I'm done with the copyedit. I think it's a great article, and definitely deserves FA status. There were a few notable spelling and grammar mistakes, but they should be cleared up now. You have my support with this one, hands down. Let's just hope that other editors agree. :-) All the best, Kodster (heLLo) (Me did that) 01:26, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
CHEERS, I just need to alter the beginnings of each paragragh. I noticed that almost all of them start with "Jackson". I like to mix it up a little with "The singer" or "the entertainer" or start the sentane differently somehow. I think I will wake up early tomorrow, finish a few nit picks ang go for it. I finished with your article, which is near perfect aside the lead. — Realist2 (Speak) 01:35, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
LOL you are the best.  :-) Sorry for changing them all to Jackson, I just thought that there wasn't enough context. I don't know, it's fine changing it up a bit. All the best, Kodster (heLLo) (Me did that) 01:37, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Edit to Globalization Page[edit]

I noticed that the first line in the Section "Pro-Globalization" on the Globalization page is hard to understand. It reads "Generally, support of Free Trade, Capitalism, and Democracy - systems which are widely believed to facilitate globalization."

What does this mean? There needs to be some sort of declaration before the term "generally" is used. There isn't and although this is technically a sentence, it standing as the first line in a paragraph is incorrect. My friend tried to fix it but to no avail, and it seems if anyone else does it is considered vandalism. So either remove the sentence entirely or make the section make sense, please.

Thanks for the Welcome![edit]

Dear Kodster, Thank you for the welcome note and cookies. I am totally new (and ignorant) at this so appreciate all feedback. I am wanting to start a new article but want to keep it in a Sandbox until I have all the content and citations completed. I must create a sub-page as I understand it (?) and need to know where and how do I set this up? (I am reading some documentation but a bit overwhelmed at the moment.) Rca institute (talk) 20:42, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Simply go to the search box and type in "User:Rca institute/sandbox". A page will show up saying that there is no user page by that name. Click on "Start the Rca institute/sandbox page". There should be a big box where you can type. Type whatever you want for your new article, and click "Save Page" on the bottom. And there you go! You have your own sandbox! Feel free to ask me again if you need any more help. All the best, Kodster (heLLo) (Me did that) 20:48, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Comment[edit]

I replied at my page. I think you need to clarify a part of your support, I think you were trying to say that, since you have changed so much, that previously you were unqualified to understand the requirements of FA. However it reads like you were saying that you deliberately supported last time around even though you thought it wasn't good enough. I know this wasn't what you meant to say and that statement will cause you a few problems unless you clarify it. — Realist2 (Speak) 00:00, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Kodster I agree with R2. Clarify your support a bit.--Xp54321 (Hello!Contribs) 00:15, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Damage Control[edit]

Hi Kodster, How are you? I have a concern I would like your opinion on. After posting an article on Wikipedia, if another contributor / editor wanted to change (say... incorrectly) content or link to an article that was not deemed to be accurate, what is the best way to monitor so that it does not get out of control. (I read the help pages on some guidelines but wanted your thoughts and if you had any direct experiences of this happening etc. ? Thank you kindly. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rca institute (talkcontribs) 20:50, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm fine, thanks. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia that anyone can edit. The best way to stop an editor from changing content is to ask him to stop. If he does not stop, report him to an administrator, who can take the appropriate action (for example, blocking the problem user from Wikipedia). Also, what you could do is protect the article. Read Wikipedia's policies on protection. I'll summarize it for you: an administrator can semi-protect an article, which disables people who are NOT logged in from editing your article (for an example, see the article on George W. Bush, and full protection, which disables everyone except administrators from editing that article. If you want to request article protection, follow the instructions here. I haven't had any problems like this, but it does happen to many editors. Please try to ask the contributor-of-concern NICELY to stop adding unreliable info, and don't forget to explain what he is doing and why he shouldn't do it. Don't make him feel bad, just tell hiim what he's doing wrong and why he shoudl stop. I hope that helps. I'm not an administrator, so I can't protect your article for you. But I hope this info helps. Beatles newsletter July 2008[edit]

WikiProject The Beatles Newsletter
Issue 013 – July 2008

Beatles News
Project News
  • As you may have seen, the talk page banner changed a bit. It has a couple of bugs (most notably the categorisation problems), but the {{WPBannerMeta}} standardisation was long overdue. Thank you to Dendodge for sorting it.
  • The newsletter's back after a very positive reaction, and thanks are again due to Dendodge.
  • Article adoptions: Heather Mills will be a hot topic next month, as the truth will be referenced.
  • The hottest Project page this month has been The Quarrymen (now a GA). It reveals the most accurate history of their early days, because so many other web pages tell a completely untrue story (one web page said they lost a Carroll Levis competition to a woman who played the spoons :)
Other Project news
Member News
  • New members to the project (since the last issue, which was a long time ago) include a lot of names, which can be found here....
  • Project member news:
Issue of the Month

Apart from the usual vandals, there is an ongoing problem with Wikipedia editors deleting free and fair-use photos because they don't think they are of any value to articles, even though this sometimes leaves articles with no photos at all. These editors do not leave notes on talk pages, so if you see that a photo has vanished, check the talk page and the history log.

From the Editors

It's been a while, but the newsletter's back! After a short discussion on the project talk page, seemingly unanimous consensus to bring it back was reached. This issue, and subsequent ones, will probably be shorter - as we kept running out of things to say before! There's a lot to say this month, purely due to the long absence of a newsletter, but we'll keep it as brief as possible.

In order to get delivery by Denbot sorted, the special delivery interface has been changed slightly - but existing delivery options still stand. Inactive participants who want delivery should place their names on this list.

If you've just joined, add your name to the Participants section of Wikipedia:WikiProject The Beatles. You'll get a mention in the next issue of the Newsletter and get it delivered as desired. Also, please include your own promotions and awards in future issues. Don't be shy!

Lastly, this is your newsletter and you can be involved in the creation of the next issue (Issue 014 – August 2008). Any and all contributions are welcome. Simply let yourself be known to any of the undersigned, or just start editing!

Invincible section 2000-2002[edit]

Hi I just expanded this section of the MJ article, could you spare the time to give it a strong copy edit, appreciated buddy. — Realist2 (Speak) 00:25, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You got it. Sorry for the delay, I've been busy. :-( Kodster (heLLo) (Me did that) 19:15, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I liked it overall. However, there were a few things that I didn't quite grasp:
  • "In 2000, Jackson was waiting for the licenses to the masters of his albums to revert back to him." I don't know what this means, and casual readers may not either. Maybe use different wording.
    • Lol, I took the exact wording from the book, I'm not sure myself, probably have to leave that as is. — Realist2 (Speak) 19:53, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Sony disputed claims that they had failed to promote Invincible with sufficient energy". This is kind of minor, but what did Sony do with "sufficient energy"? Did Sony dispute the claims with energy, or did they not PROMOTE THE ALBUM with said energy? Again, it's a minor thing, but may need cleaning up.
    • That would be the actual promotion of the album. — Realist2 (Speak) 19:53, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Quickly looking at the rest of the article, I think I can say with certainty that you're using numerals (1, 2, 3 instead of "one", "two", "three") for numbers above 10. So why is "thirtieth" not written in numerals (30th)?
    • I can fix this myself, I just wanted to know if there was a reason for it.
      • Yeah it should be 30th, good catch. — Realist2 (Speak) 19:53, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
        • I'm a little confused, the example I can see is written in numerals as 30th? Unless your talking about a different section perhaps? — Realist2 (Speak) 20:11, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • "The album spawned three singles (though not all had music videos)..." Do you know which singles didn't? There's only three, so which one(s) had (a) video(s) and which didn't?
    • "Butterflies" was the only one that had no video, ("Cry" had one but it was extremely low budget because of the label dispute, I might write a few lines on that interesting altercation actually). — Realist2 (Speak) 19:53, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's about it. I don't mean to be harsh, I'm trying to help. But you know that by now. :-) Cheers, Kodster (heLLo) (Me did that) 19:31, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • No problem you did a good job, maybe you can finish the section of wit this feedback. — Realist2 (Speak) 19:53, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • That's all I could find. The rest of the section looks fine. :-) I'm going on away (vacation) from July 31 to August 10. I won't be on Wikipedia at all, so any messages you leave me will go unread until I come back. :-( Sorry. I hope Wikipedia has one more FA by the time I come back. ;-) Cheers buddy, and good luck. Kodster (heLLo) (Me did that) 22:09, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
