June 2013[edit]

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Way of St. James may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "()"s and 1 "{}"s likely mistaking one for another. If you have, don't worry, just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

List of unpaired brackets remaining on the page:
  • most common, literally translating to "Good Way!", but more often taken to mean "have a good walk" {"caminar" being the Spanish for "to walk"). This is employed as a farewell between pilgrims, and from locals living on the routes to pilgrims.

Thanks, BracketBot (talk) 12:20, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

pilgrim greetings[edit]

Indeed, both Buen Camino and Ultreia were rather common when I walked the way in 1998.

I also frequently encountered (and used) buenos dias peregrino (have a good day pilgrim), in particular in showing that you know anothers destination, relevant mainly in the less busy stretches where the scallop was not that well known yet (nb much has changes since 1998 30,000 pilgrims - 2012 190,000). But yet in the less travelled stretches (Somport - Puenta la Reina), de Northern coastal road, or the routes from central spain and portugal this may still be custom..... Or of course outside spain (Bon Journee Pelerin - France). Did you encounter / know of this way of greeting? Arnoutf (talk) 14:55, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I do remember hearing "buenos dias peregrino", but not all that often. It strikes me as a fairly general salutation though, as you could quite happily say "buenos dias camarero" to a waiter or "buenos dias doctor" to a doctor. I rather think the idiosynchratic "Buen Camino" (which is almost nonsensical) or "Ultreia", which genuinely has no meaning outside of the Camino, are more unique to the camino.

I remember the first time I went to Santiago, supposedly as a pilgrim, was the year of the massive marketing push, in 1993, which gave birth to the modern Camino. I was barely a teenager. About 12 of my family of varying age drove down to Santiago, we got our "bordones", a few got their Compostelana, but really it mostly went over my head. I didn't realise the significance of it until my aunt, who had just been diagnosed with cancer, walked it in 1996 or 1997, and came back saying that she felt better than she ever had. She went on to walk it a further 2 times before passing. I've walked it twice, hoping to do it again at some point. The difficulty is finding the time!Kpbtm (talk) 08:26, 19 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
