John Sommers

John Sommers was a codebreaker during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. While not much is known about his life, he was a secretary to the English ambassador in France around the 1560s. He was integral to the operations of the Elizabethan Intelligence organization headed by Sir Francis Walsingham. During his time as a secretary, he had access to encrypted correspondence from Mary of Guise, the Queen Regent of Scotland at this time. He cracked the cipher and relayed the information to the English Intelligence organization. Once word got out that the original code had been cracked, the Queen Regent changed her cipher, only to have a determined Sommers break it again. He went on to be a valuable resource for the intelligence organization and trained Thomas Phelippes, who would go on to become a notable codebreaker himself. John Sommers’ codebreaking was instrumental in the eventual defeat of the Spanish Armada and the plunder of Spain by Sir Francis Drake.
