  • When blocking an IPv6 address with Twinkle, there is now a checkbox with the option to just block the /64 range. When doing so, you can still leave a block template on the initial, single IP address' talkpage.
  • When protecting a page with Twinkle, you can now add a note if doing so was in response to a request at WP:RfPP, and even link to the specific revision.
  • There have been a number of reported issues with Pending Changes. Most problems setting protection appear to have been resolved (phab:T273317) but other issues with autoaccepting edits persist (phab:T275322).

  • Following a request for comment, F7 (invalid fair-use claim) subcriterion a has been deprecated; it covered immediate deletion of non-free media with invalid fair-use tags.
  • Following a request for comment, page movers were granted the delete-redirect userright, which allows moving a page over a single-revision redirect, regardless of that redirect's target.

Technical news

  • When you move a page that many editors have on their watchlist the history can be split and it might also not be possible to move it again for a while. This is because of a job queue problem. (T278350)
  • Code to support some very old web browsers is being removed. This could cause issues in those browsers. (T277803)

Cause and effect

SloppyTots, I will try to write at least a stub, but I don't think I can do a proper article. I have stopped translating anything that I haven't verified with the sources myself, and the sources of the Würzburgwiki article are not accessible online. By the way did you know that James Lind was supposed to go on the second voyage of James Cook and was supposed to get £4000 for it? I have been meaning to dig up more on the backstory, but a slight mention is at A Voyage Round the World. Kusma, thank you! That will be great. We also need to start a page for Josef von Fodor, obituary, but this can be done later. Since I'm relatively new to Wiki, several of the new pages I had attempted to start usually get merged or recommended for deletion. Found it better to work with a veteran editor. I briefly looked into the James Lind and Captain Cook connection. Seems like it'll be big news if it is indeed James Lind (1736-1812) and not James Lind (1716-1794)! One book and few webpages seem to indicate it is James Lind (1716-1794) based on the scurvy connection. Cook's voyage was 1772-1775, James Lind (1736-1812) had embarked on several voyages in the 1760s including Iceland in 1772 with Joseph Banks, timeline seems to work where it could be the case that another voyage was contemplated for 1772-1775. Whatever the case, this confusion is in alignment with historians agreeing that the history of the four James Linds is a complete mess due to the similar names/locations/medical achievements. I'll also invest some more time digging up more on the Lind (1736)-Cook connection in the days ahead. Cheers, SloppyTots (talk) 23:16, 11 May 2021 (UTC)

SloppyTots, there is no question that it was the James Lind born 1736. From Beaglehole's edition of Cook's journals, vol II, p. 913 "8 February . Royal Society , Minutes of Council . Dr James Lind recommended to the Board of Longitude ‘as a person who will be extreamly useful in the intended voyage for discoveries in remote parts; on account of his skill and experience in his profession, and from his great Knowledge in Mineralogy, Chemistry, Mechanics, and various branches of Natural Philosophy; and also from his having spent several years in different climates, in the Indies'.-R.S., Council Minutes, vol. VI, p. 131. 10" It was not really Cook but Joseph Banks who wanted Lind as part of his large entourage, and after Banks had failed to get his will with regards to the expedition ships of Cook's second voyage and decided not to go, they went to Iceland, the Hebrides and the Orkneys together instead in 1772. —Kusma (t·c) 08:31, 12 May 2021 (UTC)

German wikipedia, math

I saw your comment at ANI and it made me curious what was so bad about editing math there. (Purely a theoretical interest, as I don't speak German.) --JBL (talk) 18:30, 12 May 2021 (UTC)

JayBeeEll, the thing that I really hate is they lowercase all proper name-derived adjectives. Essentially, they write "gaussian curvature", "riemannian geometry". Standard in German mathematical texts is to use uppercase for most name-derived adjectives, so it is "Riemannsche Geometrie". But "abelsche Gruppe" is very common and "noetherscher Ring" is also fairly common. This probably displeases people who want everything to be consistent. But consistently lowercasing everything looks terrible to me and makes me not want to contribute. So I don't. Page Deletion

Hi,

I had created page named Nexxzy , combined from various sources, it's a malicious virus, infecting online gamers, since page didnt exist on wikipedia i created it. May I know why it was deleted?

  • @Cyanex: There was no indication of notability as software or as a crime. While it is good to warn people against malicious software, we can't do that unless the warning is repeated in reliable sources. Your article was based on your own experiences with the scammers, making it original research, which we can't publish here. If you find reliable sources (not forums or wikis) that cover this scam, I'm happy to restore it, but it might still be deleted unless you have multiple independent sources talking about it. As for your second question, if you find an unverifiable claim in an article, please remove it. If there are conflicting sources that contradict each other, this is also worth mentioning.     • @Cyanex:, we're fairly egalitarian here, no need to be in awe of people with long tenure. The article you mention is in pretty bad shape and seriously lacking in references. I know too little about gymnastics or about sports in India to fix this (I can Google some mentions, but I don't know whether what I can find are reliable sources or not), so I've just inserted some templates and removed the mention of her as current title holder (this is probably the most recent). —Kusma (t·c) 14:17, 18 May 2021 (UTC)

The developments: As you may be aware, the discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#User:DeNoel's sig was closed with a no-action decision. A broader policy is under discussion at Wikipedia talk:Signatures#Signatures and usernames. I've already stated that I won't change my signature just to satisfy one disruptive editor, but that I was already intending to change my signature in anticipation of the policy discussion.

What I had been in the process of typing, was my acknowledging the very respectful manner in which you asked me to implement the change (of signature), which was missing from the discussion on my own Talk page. Thank you. About Thilo Wilke - fails WP:NFOOTY - may avoid WP:PROD if German language (or any other languages) references can be identified?

Hi Kusma. This article obviously fails the WP:NFOOTY test. I am considering contesting the proposed deletion of this article. It would appear to me that coverage in reliable sources of his travel all around the world to play with amateur or semi-professional clubs in in German language media at least - "Ein Karlstadter wird mit 27 Fußballprofi in Australien" for example - might be enough to pass the WP:GNG test. @Shirt58, I think the article is quite unlikely to pass AFD, although the life of a semi-professional football player who has played in the top leagues of New Zealand and Bavaria has more to it than most one-game WP:NFOOTY passes. Most of the coverage is by fairly local news media, except for perhaps the kicker interview. I absolutely don't mind if you want to contest the PROD (that's what PROD is for) but I am far from convinced we should have an article about him. —Kusma (t·c) 12:13, 26 May 2021 (UTC)

For the record, I'm unsure personally if I'd call notability, but I think this is a pretty interesting case that I could see closing keep or no consensus at RfA AfD. I don't directly edit sports articles, although I've closed many sporting RMs, but I keep an eye on sports-related AfDs because of their interesting considerations, and I've seen similar "fails NFOOTY but has a claim to GNG" articles survive. Local coverage isn't much of an issue for GNG -- it's NCORP that fails for it. And yes, as for the UPE tag, I don't think it should hang around forever on articles that have been checked by a neutral third party. Vaticidalprophet 20:54, 31 May 2021 (UTC)
