Image copyright problem with Image:October.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:October.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. Even if you created the image yourself, you still need to release it so Wikipedia can use it. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you made this image yourself, you can use copyright tags like {{PD-self}} (to release all rights), {{self|CC-by-sa-3.0|GFDL}} (to require that you be credited), or any tag here - just go to the image, click edit, and add one of those. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by STBotI. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 18:47, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free image (Image:October.jpg)[edit]

⚠
Thanks for uploading Image:October.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? help me[edit]

I am in way over my head. I do not understand how to link more articles very well. More importantly is the fair use issue of my painting. I do not mind it being in Wikipedia, but I am not licensing it for redistribution or use by others without permission. I own this painting and have all rights to it, but do not know enough about copyrights to say which category I fall under in giving permission for its use. Please help me with this. Thank you.

Hi there, and welcome.
This is a bit complicated I'm afraid, so bear with me - and remember, there's always plenty of people willing to help...
  • Most important first: the picture. We can't use pictures that are released for use only on Wikipedia. Wikipedia is free, so we want anyone to be able to freely copy it, for any purpose. Other websites can display Wikipedia content, or it can be printed in books, or whatever - as long as they give credit. So, images are normally released under a licence such as Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike. There are exceptions, for "Fair use of a non-free image", with rather complex restrictions - low-resolution copies non-free pics can only be used on live articles where they add significantly to understanding of the article. So, that means, regarding File:October.jpg - two choices;
  • a) If you are the copyright holder, you could choose to release it for anyone to use (as long as they give credit), or
  • b) it might be possible to use it on the article Kathleen Gemberling Adkison, but only if text could be added giving information about the specific picture. And the text would need an appropriate reference.
I'd be quite happy to help you, with either of those things. For more information, see Wikipedia:Image use policy, and for b) see WP:NONFREE.
  • Wikilinks: To link to other wikipedia articles, just put double square brackets around the word to link. For example, putting I live in [[England]] produces: I live in England.
You can also link when the text differs from the article title, like this: I am a [[Dentistry|dentist]]. produces: I am a dentist.
See WP:LINKING, and the very handy WP:CHEATSHEET.
  • Please post questions at the bottom of talk pages, rather than the top. Also,
    When you leave messages, please remember to "sign" your name, by putting ~~~~ (four tilde signs) at the end. This will add your name, and the date and time. You can also do this by clicking the 'sign' button, pictured to the right..

If you have problems, you can get help, here, via 'text chat'. Or, just add another {{helpme}} below, and ask your further questions. Best,  Chzz  ►  19:00, 22 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

{{helpme}}

Thank you very much for your help. I would be grateful for your help. Please feel free to allow the photo to be in the lower resolution version that can be used as long as there is a citation. That will be fine. My photo is not professional quality, so there is very little chance of abuse of my painting. Also if you would not mind, I would be grateful for the addition of the references you discuss. It can be linked to abstract art, woman artists, anything regarding Mark Tobey and Painting techniques. I appreciate your help on this. I am a huge art fan, and Kathleen has passed, so I believe this article is relevant for historical as well as artistic reasons. Best Regards,

This looks a good solution to me, but would need help from an administrator to remove the hi-resolution version from the history of File:October.jpg. I've posted at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions for you. -- John of Reading (talk) 11:57, 25 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks -- John of Reading (talk) 21:19, 25 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

OK, Landfyoung, only the low-resolution image is left. If you wish to license this for re-use, provided that the re-user gives attribution, then the next step is for you to go to File:October.jpg and click the "Edit" link at the top. Delete the first two lines, that talk about "non-free use", and instead add {{self|CC-by-sa-3.0|GFDL}}. -- John of Reading (talk) 21:19, 25 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
