Conflict of interest in Wikipedia[edit]

Hi Leahnaz I work on conflict of interest issues here in Wikipedia. You appear to have some connection with Bmai, based on the presence of unsourced detail about the company in your draft article. I'm giving you notice of our Conflict of Interest guideline and Terms of Use, and will have some comments and requests for you below.

Information icon Hello, Leahnaz. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with some of the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest. People with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, see the conflict of interest guideline and frequently asked questions for organizations. In particular, please:

  • avoid editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, its competitors, or projects and products you or they are involved with;
  • instead, propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • exercise great caution so that you do not violate Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use require disclosure of your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation.

Please familiarize yourself with relevant policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, sourcing, and autobiographies. Thank you.

Comments and requests[edit]

Wikipedia is a widely-used reference work and managing conflict of interest is essential for ensuring the integrity of Wikipedia and retaining the public's trust in it. As in academia, COI is managed here in two steps - disclosure and a form of peer review. Please note that there is no bar to being part of the Wikipedia community if you have a conflict of interest; there are just some things we ask you to do (and if you are paid, some things you need to do).

Disclosure is the most important, and first, step. While I am not asking you to disclose your identity (anonymity is strictly protecting by out WP:OUTING policy) would you please disclose if you have some connection with Bmai? You can answer how ever you wish (giving personally identifying information or not), but if there is a connection, with please disclose it. After you respond (and you can just reply below), perhaps we can talk a bit about editing Wikipedia, to give you some more orientation to how this place works. You can reply here - I am watching this page. Thanks! Jytdog (talk) 11:09, 17 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Conflict of interest in Wikipedia: Response[edit]

Hi Jytdog, thank you for your message! I understand Wikipedia's definition and policies regarding content contribution when there's a conflict of interest, and intended to disclose it here but hadn't gotten to it. I am an amateur runner who is familiar with Bmai's business model and products. I am not directly affiliated with Bmai even though I have come into contact with some of their team members during their running events. I wanted to create a Wikipedia page for them not because I would gain to benefit from it (it's my own idea and initiative, and I'm not getting paid for it), but because I admire their business model (quality and reasonably-priced products combined in one). I believe more people should know about companies like Bmai and be inspired by their business model, and hope for more companies like Bmai to emerge (for those who are thinking about starting up businesses). In terms of referencing, I have written all contents on this page with help from some friends (also not affiliated to Bmai), and they are mostly translated and paraphrased from existing sources in Chinese, I would be happy to add more citations. I did talk to someone from Bmai's marketing team, with the purpose to clarify what I was about to write, and also to seek permission to use photos of their products. (I plan to seek help in the community to see how I can upload these photos to the article page and would love it if you would care to help.) All in all, I don't think there's a conflict of interest issue here in this article, because I'm volunteering to write this article, the contents are my own words and originate from reliable sources, and it's with an interest for more people to know this great company that I'm creating this page. I would love to elaborate on what i have written here should you wish me to, and talk about any concerns that you may still have. I would also love your input on how I can contribute to Wikipedia beyond this article. Thanks for your time! Leahnaz (talk) 02:00, 18 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
